The streets of fashion week are just as much of a show as the runways and often showcase the more accessible of the trends displayed on the catwalks. They show how real people are taking the inspiration they are seeing at shows and putting their own spin on it. We thought we’d give a breakdown of some reoccurring trends we saw on the streets of NYC.

Pops Of Red

One trend we’ve been seeing everywhere for the last few months is the pops of red, or full monochromatic red looks. We’ve loved seeing this on runway but seeing it from a street style point of view is even more special. Seeing how people fit it into their own personal style and make it work in a non-commercial way is so much more genuine.

Bonnets

Bonnets and Balaclavas have been in the fashion world for a while now, and while the rise of the trend was totally unpredictable, the origin could be traced back to Dior’s cruise collection in 2022 in which several of the looks came with matching bonnets. They are a bit of a marmite of the fashion world, as you either love them or hate them. But we are not one to turn down aa quirky accessory so are completely here for it.  Bonnets are the perfect way to add a touch of chic whimsy to otherwise, simple outfits.

Whilst collaborating with an array of the fashion world’s most desirable labels throughout the past decade, such as Louis Vuitton and Emilio Pucci, Supreme began dipping its toes in the world of beauty in 2020 – with none other than the iconic Pat McGrath Labs. Spearheaded by the world’s most influential makeup artist, if fashion is to collide with the world of beauty, it’s hard to find a duo as impressive as this one.

Whilst their initial collaboration began with the launch of a limited-edition lipstick in the shade of Supreme’s signature red, this time, the pair are making their mark elsewhere, through none other than nail varnish. It comes as a first for not only Supreme, but for Pat McGrath Labs too, producing a collection of three bold colours.

In a handful of videos uploaded to Instagram, designed by nail artist Jin Soon, Pat McGrath Labs revealed a striking red nail polish, accompanied by alternate shades of both black, and white. Whilst the price range is yet to be publicised, the launch will be sold exclusively by Supreme.

In true streetwear style, we’re sure that the products will sell out rapidly. But if you’re looking to get your hands on the hottest new beauty collaborations, this isn’t the first time that two cutting-edge brands have joined forces.

This week, Fenty Beauty announced their upcoming collection with one of fashion’s finest – MSCHF. In a post uploaded to Instagram, the pair appear to be releasing six products in the style of ketchup sachets, filled with either Fenty Beauty’s Gloss Bomb in a new shade of cherry, or ketchup.

Whilst details are few and far between when it comes to social media, the collector’s item is available at both a hotdog stand pop-up in New York, and online at KetchupOrMakeup.com, retailing at $25.

Although MSCHF are known for their absurdity, proving hot off the press as the producers of the Eat the Rich ice cream truck and Nike’s Gobstomper sneakers, it can’t be denied that the collab will be fuelled by modernity – proving an exciting launch that beauty-lovers will be clawing at.

In the ad campaign, ASAP admitted that Mercedes has always had a cultural influence on his personal style and identity due to its familiarity in the hip-hop world, a comment that comes as no surprise when considering the brand’s affiliation with the rap scene (the car has been referenced in the works of hip hop legends from Jay- Z to N.W.A). Speaking to GQ about the collection, ASAP admitted Mercedes had a cultural impact on him from being young. The star joked how he used to buy bootleg Mercedes logos in downtown New York; demonstrating the admiration and respect Mercedes has gained from the rap star over the years.

The collection is made for street style lovers, regardless of gender identity. High-quality joggers, hoodies, and caps adorn the circular Mercedes logo while remaining stylishly minimal in white and black hues. So, it’s no surprise the announcement of the drop had excited fans deeming it ‘the best collab of the year’ on social media. Even Mercedes joined in on the comment section hype, deeming the collaboration a ‘uniting of icons’.

And, if you thought you loved online shopping before, the virtual purchasing experience of the collection is like nothing else. After heading to the AWGE site to purchase your own Mercedes merch, you’ll be met by a vintage video game simulation that allows you to shop the garments while collecting Mercedes tokens in a race car (and if we weren’t so excited to check out, we’d be amused by it all day).

One of the most exciting pieces in the collection is the reversible orange and black bomber that ASAP sports in the ad, its bold style and blazing Mercedes logo speaks to the collaboration’s identity of ‘dreaming bigger’ and ‘shaping the now’.

The collaboration is truly unique in its united ethos of speaking to a generation that favours casual and stylish attire. The collection is a cultural reset, available to buy now!

One of the core principles of the series is to break down the barriers for women to make it into the industry as well as to create more gender neutral looks and designs as, despite its massive boom in popularity, the streetwear industry is still primarily male dominated and focused. Read on for a rundown of the contestants and their brands as well as the outcome of episode one. Be warned, spoilers ahead!

The Designers

Ibbz

Brand: Saint Mind

Categorising his brand Saint Mind as a lifestyle brand and streetwear hybrid Ibbz sees Saint Mind as being the next big brand in the UK. With more experience on the technical and marketing sides of the business as opposed to physical production Ibbz and Saint Mind have collaborated with the likes of Dappy and Yung Filly.

Kemi

Brand: Gbadebo

Currently studying fashion at MMU Kemi and her brand stand for sustainability and all of the movements that she believes in, wanting to make the fashion industry a more sustainable and environmentally friendly place.

Luke

Brand: Dysfunctional

Luke’s brand Dysfunctional focuses on creating streetwear suitable for everyone. Luke had an accident 12 years ago that caused him to lose one of his legs so he uses his brand and his products to send aspirational messages and inspire others to be their true best.

Missy 

Brand: Misemi

Missy and her brand Misemi are strongly inspired by 90s hip hop fashion with a particular emphasis on bug, bold prints and allowing consumers to really express their personalities through their clothes. Missy first started developing her brand when studying Architecture at university as a release from the course, which she wasn’t enjoying, and since then has had clients including Lethal Bizzle, Mahalia, Julia Adenuga and Raye. One of Missy’s main goals is to create and encourage conversation.

Ola

Brand: BVL Designs

Ola and his brand BVL Designs started out by making unique and quirky trainers that went against the grain and stood out amongst the crowd before eventually expanding into accessories, bags and garments too. Starting out the brand in the first lockdown due to his frustration with online working Ola quickly managed to collaborate with giants including Converse, Microsoft, Reebok and Jaded, so it’s safe to say that he already has his foot well and firmly in the industry.

Ruth

Ruth’s brand was inspired by the film Dawn of the Dead which she used as the basis for her design in this first week. She created a huge display case that mimicked a ‘Break Glass in Case of Emergency’ panel that housed her garment, a gilet puffer with a zombie print on, behind it.

Saaba

Brand: ALKBN

With his brand’s name deriving from the name ancient indigenous Africans used to call the land, Alkebulan, Saaba incorporates a lot of African tradition into his designs and garments. The designer also incorporates elements of knife crime into his clothes as well, being passionate about sending a strong message regarding the issue. Saaba graduated from Central Saint Martins and is seeking to tell the story of his people in a creative and engaging way.

Sam

Brand: DONK

One of Sam’s signature motifs is the yellow smiley face often associated with rave culture. Sam’s designs frequently feature bright colours and bold patterns giving his style a distinctly casual and laidback vibe that is perfect for the rave culture and imagery that he is inspired by.

Sophie

Brand: GoGuy

Sophie’s brand GoGuy specializes in colourful designs for festivals and partygoers. Sophie describes the two main aspects of her and her brand’s personality as the 9-5, Monday to Friday workaholic and high energy, crazy and energetic which she uses as the basis for her design in the first week.

For this first week the designers were tasked with creating garments that reflected their own personal beliefs and ethics, reflecting themselves and their brands into their clothes. As well as this they also had to create a space to showcase and drop the clothes in, a significant challenge considering most of the contestants only have experience with online sales rather than physical drops.

This week’s guest judge was JME and he decided that Missy, who had created a printed puffer jacket dyed with orange swirls and the phrase ‘Love the culture but they don’t love us’, reflected herself and her story the best and crowned her this week’s winner, sending her through to the next round. Unfortunately, it was Ibbz who was the first contestant of the series to be sent home with the judges deciding that his garment and display didn’t convey the message of his brand well enough, with too many ideas being thrown into the final outcome.

With the challenges only set to get bigger and more difficult from here on out, it will be interesting to see which of the designers are able to make a big enough mark to stay in the competition. The Drop airs on BBC Three every Monday at 9pm and you can catch up on BBC iPlayer.

Bilal Hassani

French singer, Bilal Hassani, arrived for Jean Paul Gaultier’s show in a lilac satin puffer-style dress. On her way to the show, Bilal covered the dress with a rolled-collar jacket and beige rimmed shades. Comments on Bilal’s Instagram post humorously compared her look to “a park avenue mom dropping off her kids”, a fitting look for a show as extravagant as Gaultier’s.

Fredrik Robertsson

Self-proclaimed fashion addict Fredrik Robertson did not take Valentino’s all-black dress code lightly. Wearing Swedish fashion designer Wilhja, Robertson rocked an immense, (definitely not little) black dress. The ruffled dress was paired with black visors and an evening bag coated in silver studs. The punk rock look matched the show’s ethos of redefining couture.

Amina Muaddi

Fashion label owner Amina owned Haute Couture Day 3 in a bright pink hooded bodysuit under a figure-hugging corset in a translucent red shade. The star posted snaps of her iconic look in a trippy mirror-filled room, adding to the look’s allure and unique style.

Caroline Daur

If there’s anyone we can rely on to always have a 10/10 look at fashion week, it’s high fashion blogger Caroline Daur. Swapping trousers for gloves; the German beauty sported an oversized black shirt with lengthy gloves and a classic Valentino bag in a sunshine yellow shade to add a pop of colour to the all-black theme.

Jessica Wang

After a busy week on the front row of designer’s shows, Wang took to sightseeing on the streets of Paris wearing a two-toned green and white dress. The look was pulled together by a chunky gold belly chain and even chunkier barbie pink heels. A look as elegant and timeless as the Parisian monuments she posed outside of.

Leonie Hanne

While fashion blogger, Leonie Hanne, couldn’t make fashion week this year, she posted a reel to her Instagram as an ode to her favourite Valentino looks of the past months to celebrate the fashion house’s show. Hanne collated an array of colourful looks such as a 1920s style art-deco dress and loose blazer/ pant duos in bright pink and green. In the heartfelt post’s comments, the blogger said she “cried watching Valentino’s show in bed”- a similar response to the one we had while watching her stunning reel.

Yendry

Artist Yendry arrived at the Jean Paul Gaultier show in a fresh and futuristic look. Yendry’s dress mimicked the legendary body-shaped perfume bottles which Gaultier is known for. The figure-hugging dress was grey with graphics of the female anatomy on the front.

The predominant rich purple adds luxury to the look, and with the overwhelming feathers surrounding Kim, this outfit definitely complements the bold colours of Siriano’s opening runway.

Lil’ Kim also got the memo for big and bold with this black and red mini dress featuring numerous fabric roses. Red and black is a classy combination for Autumn, especially when contrasting textures and an interesting silhouette are added.

Head-to-toe denim is back, according to Kehlani. She revamps typical jean fabric with a bleached denim shirt of various blue hues and oversized, baggy blue jeans. Kehlani’s chunky, layered chains are another nice touch to match the various clasps, zips, and buttons of the denim fabrics.

Irina Shayk attended the Bvlgari party in the stunning pairing of a shining, orange corset constructed by LaQuan Smith and loose camo pants from The Attico. The structured, stiff bright orange fabric contrasts the earth tones of the camo trousers which have a baggy silhouette.

Jhené Aiko wore this cute, polka-dot outfit from Prabal Gurung. The black mini dress contrasts the predominant white of the bodysuit to create an interesting visual look.

Bretman Rock is becoming an icon of streetwear and this look is no different. This outfit is chic and elegant, the dark suit naturally keeps it minimal, but the interesting shirt elevates the simple silhouette with the bold red colour cascading across one side to create an asymmetrical jacket.
