For the fashionable inhabitants of the original Y2K era, Blumarine was a brand that elicited pure jubilant fun. The flirty florals and animal prints mixed in with colourful feathers and fur brought a vibrant look that teetered the line between daywear and clubwear, and everything joyful in between.

And now the glorious look of Blumarine is back, and stronger than ever. The brand’s use of colour and embellishment continues to be celebrated today with their famously fun styles — but it’s fitting for a brand that is so associated with their semi-official icon of the butterfly to break out beyond any cocoon. Today in 2021, the brand’s Creative Director Nicola Brognano has innovated the Blumarine look, by doing things such as placing fur in experimental places such as fuzzy blue hoop earrings and creating logo-fied blinged-out maxi belts — adding a modern perspective to the brand’s lush aesthetics.

The brand’s surge of popularity makes perfect sense. The adoration of Blumarine goes far and wide, much like many other icons of the Y2K era who are going through a current renaissance— from Victoria’s Secret and Juicy Couture amongst the labels refreshing their looks for the modern world.

And this time around, Blumarine has something else new fuelling its popularity — social media. The Blumarine look is downright booming with Gen Z on TikTok (with the hashtag #blumarine receiving 1.9 million views on the app), and the label’s recent runway looks have been spotted on Instagram on Kim Kardashian, Chiara Ferragni and Bella Hadid, who donned a yellow fur asymmetrical Blumarine top just days ago.

Just launched for 2022, the brand describes their latest collection as “New Romanticism – modern, sensual, mischievous” on their website. All of the looks marvellously capture the spirit of the brand, which they describe as “[having] many facets as the petals, and thorns, of a rose.” This spirit, mixed in with vibes of Y2K pop-star pastel slick shininess and adorned with furs and prints, creates a glowing new look that feels romantic and rebellious at the same time.

Trend: Belly Chains

We’re really feeling the y2k resurgence in SS21 and another bold trend that nods to the era is the return of the belly chain. Simple and sexy, this small addition is the perfect way to add some bling to your swimwear. Go bold like Lizzo who wears a chunky gold personalised chain, or keep it intricate like Hailey Bieber in a dainty body piece.

Trend: Material Play

From metallic pieces to crochet embellishments – another trend for swimwear this season is material play. Kylie Jenner wears a crochet bikini with stunning floral details and pearls, it’s one of the most creative forms of garments and brings heat to boho. This blue metallic set worn by Chi Virgo is by the brand Nii HAi – if you’re looking to stand out in your swimwear this summer this set is for you, with not many brands jumping on the concept, yet.

Trend: Groovy Patterns

It’s no secret that one of the most noteworthy trends of the season is groovy, bold, vibrant 70s-style patterns – and it’s made its way to swimwear too. Two brands that are doing this right are Frankie’s Bikinis and Oh Polly, with lots of marble-themed pieces for you to pattern play with.

All new celebrity-acclaimed swimwear brand Gonza has just dropped their new season swimsuits, too, and all the designs come with gloves to match.

Keeping it far from basic, Bikini’s this summer are coming in all sorts of different prints. Miaou’s first-ever swimwear pieces launched earlier in the month with dollar note-themed digital designs printed all over keeping with the bold theme of SS21. Of course, you also can’t go wrong with an animal print and this set which Jordyn Wood wears by Monday Swimwear proves Tiger looks hot.

Trend: Cut Out Swim Suits

This year we’re here for all things cut out – including swimsuits. The brand taking Instagram by storm is Louisa Ballou and their unique asymmetric designs embellished with silver detailing and groovy coloured designs, as worn by SZA and Kali Uchis.

Trend: Wrapped Up

Wrap up this summer with the tie-waist swimwear movement. With details coming around the waist and haltering above the neck there’s endless silhouettes with this trend and it’s super sexy.

Trend: Monochrome Moment

Sometimes you need a monochrome option when it comes to swimwear and what’s more timeless than a simple black two-piece or B&W set? She kept it timeless with a pair of distressed denim shorts to accompany the red coordination and gingham pattern play. Our style tip from this look is that a great way to integrate a trend is by adding something classic.

In a monogram look, Regina wears a pair of Louis Vuitton logo print joggers paired with a self-made top inspired by the designs of brand Rui Official. We’re relating to Kylie with her reminiscent snap on the beach. She looked sexy and chic in a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier piece, which features a colourful mesh design with peachy pink, yellow and orange tones. The halter neck silhouette and midi skirt are trending this season and brand AUNÉ is killing it this season with their stunning mesh designs, and they’re a must-have for your summer wardrobe. It’s never kept quiet when Beyonce shares a look on Instagram and this week she took glam to the next level. The piece has ruched detailing which compliments all shapes and a gorgeous satin finish that gives off a pearl effect. Elsa paired the piece with leather sandals, aviator sunglasses, and a Valentino leather bag.

Kicking off her Calambre Tour, Nathy Peluso wore a custom jumpsuit by Syndical Chamber. The piece features a printed, figure-enhancing shapewear design in a deep red tone. On the neckline, there’s an asymmetric cut-out detail which adds an extra element of Fuego. Nathy Peluso creatively added a Playboy dangle belly ring to the look. Pink for every day of the week. Sharkkana took to Instagram in a pair of pink, distressed jeans paired with a one-shoulder piece by designer Lois1XBlue. The top fits slightly slanted with a unique asymmetrical silhouette, and the printed design coordinates the pink. She paired the look with New Bottega visor sunglasses, making this a go-to for the hotter days around the corner this June.

This look combines neutral browns with subtle taupe tones, a pair we love for SS21. The chocolate, mesh trousers are embellished with fly-away tie details and intricate paneling which gives off a deconstructed effect. In a recent KKW beauty shoot, Kim K was styled by Sita Bellan – yes, a dream combo.
