Celebrating their heritage is what inspired many designers at Saturday’s London Fashion Week shows. From Columbia to Nigeria, designers took us on a journey back to their roots (as far or close to the show’s London location as that may be).

With odes to the glamour of Bollywood through glittering embellishments or vintage sweaters tipping the hat to Camden in the late 20th century, designers showed us that what we wear is influenced by where we come from.

Nensi Dojaka

No womenswear designer provides females with the freedom to express their bodies like Nensi Dojaka. Breaking the stigma around women wearing revealing garments, Albanian designer Dojaka brought her iconic clothing characterised by sheer material, clean silhouettes, and revealing cut-outs to London Fashion Week.

With the memo that underwear can be outerwear, Dojaka sent slinky dresses and two-piece blazer sets with a provocative twist down the runway- reflecting the daring attitude of the modern woman. The clothing was featured in an array of peachy autumnal hues, perfectly imitating the colours of the season the collection is prepared for.

It wasn’t just the clothing that emphasised Dojaka’s message that any woman can and should be able to reveal their body how they wish, as models at the London show were from a range of backgrounds and had differing body shapes, but looked equally fabulous in the garments, bringing female empowerment and inclusivity to the forefront of the fearless show.

Eudon Choi

The source of your endorphin hit this week? Eudon Choi’s Autumn/ Winter 2022 show, where Korean designer Choi used tonal layers and an extensive colour palette to bring a message of ‘optimism for the future through his riveting collection.

Inspired by director Antonioni’s first coloured film, the show began with monochromatic looks in flaming red hues, before Choi layered multiple tones to produce a colour palette with an ‘aura of fantasy’. The style of the clothing channelled the swinging 60s, as Choi confirmed the trending micro-mini skirt isn’t going anywhere soon. Choi styled the looks with 1960s-esque colourful headbands and short boxy jackets. Playing on all of our emotions; the show was a journey through colour and creation.

Ahluwalia

Wittily named ‘Bollywood to Nollywood’, Ahluwalia first-ever runway show saw a fusion of Nigerian and Indian inspired garments to celebrate designer Priya Ahluwalia’s Nigerian/ Indian heritage.

With glimmering embellishments, clashing textures, and bright colours, the Vogue and I-D approved designer’s garments were an ode to old and new Bollywood/ Nollywood. Some garments were an obvious reference, with fluorescent tees featuring graphics of Bollywood movie posters, while others incorporated colourful Nigerian-style-colourful prints into

contemporary silk two-pieces; representing the brand’s vision of creating a hybrid of the past, present, and future through their designs.

Richard Quinn

From giant boxy dresses with top hats to high-shine dominatrix attire, when it came to Quinns show, it was impossible to predict what would emerge from the wings of the runway next. But his creativity and knack for surprise mean even the most fashion-forward crowd has always been astonished by the outlandish designs of Richard Quinn. Quinn’s innovative and emotive craftsmanship cultivates garments that are unique; each telling its own dramatic story.

Combining classic designs like floral prints with modern styles like oversized silhouettes, Quinn’s show was a true highlight of 2022 London Fashion Week.

Molly Goddard

Revelling in the joy of dressing up, Molly Goddard- a label known for extravagant ballgowns- brought all the frills and froth imaginable this London Fashion Week. Looking to Camden in the 80s for inspiration, Molly paired vintage-style sweaters with puffy skirts, bringing an air of 18th-century opulence to modern dressing. The London based designer’s collection saw mood-boosting colours and uniquely detailed textiles.

After Goddard admitted she wore a dress every day of the pandemic, it comes as no surprise her AW22 collection was more extra than imaginable. Ultra-platform shoes, bright shades, and intrepid gowns were showcased; reflecting the designer’s day-to-day memo that there is no such thing as overdressing.

Labrum

Paying homage to his West African heritage while incorporating the craftsmanship of his London fashion career, designer Dumbaya brought clean in cut suits embellished with floral and leather prints to the London runway.

Deemed the ‘Poetics of Movement’, the collection was yet another reference to the hardships of migration. When speaking about his collection, Dumbaya said moving to another country can ‘feel like your culture is being stripped away, explaining why the designer chose to bring a touch of West African culture to his new London home through abstract embroidery and bright coloured textiles.

Anciela

Dancing to the words of Adriann Ramirez’s poetry; Latin- British models emerged in segregated boxes; bringing human issues to the forefront of Anciela’s digital show. The collection was filled with clothing resembling traditional Columbian attire, including ruffled shoulders, sculptural dresses, and pinstripe suits.

The show was a gesture to Anciela owner Jennifer Drouett’s Columbian home, the set and garments were adorned with flowers to reminisce The Columbian Flower Festival. The show portrayed how the weight of beauty changes in a different environment. The dimmed lighting indicated the struggles of moving countries as a migrant, so did the dark clothing contrasting the happy sunlight yellow-hued garments when the models were at home. Anciela brought sharp tailoring with an important message relevant to the ongoing migrant crisis to London Fashion Week.

Halpern

Keeping it silky, sultry and sleek, Micheal Halpern used brick fringing to cultivate a

collection of charming evening wear garments for the elegant modern woman. Tweed

suits, silk dresses, and outlandish bridal looks all gave the collection a timeless and

classic aura- reminiscent of the wardrobes of old Hollywood actresses like Audrey

The timeless pieces were given a modern twist with shortened hemlines and material

cutouts, bringing old Hollywood to the 2020s.

Poster Girl

With clothing featuring Barbie approved pink hues, heart-shaped cutouts, and a myriad of fun colours and textiles, Francesca Capper and Natasha Somerville brought a debut runway show that was straight from a 2000s chick flick.

The label played on current trends like the micro mini skirt while cultivating joyful accessories perfect for the winter like oversized ski boots and fur neck covers. While it was the label’s first-ever catwalk show, the collection was far from novice and it’s no surprise since the London taught designers have been leading the way in celebrity style after dressing big names like Kylie Jenner and Maya Jama. The brand combined street-style inspired garments with couture contoured silhouettes to present a collection that was both playful and stylish; perfectly emulating the energy of the modern woman’s wardrobe.

Mark Fast

Tassels, tight-fitting silhouettes, and traditional trench coats encapsulated the aspirational and uninhibited energy of Mark Fast’s clothing. Fast sought up a collection that brought energy and life to everyday wear; matching the brand’s ethos of cultivating exciting pieces that simultaneously provide comfort and luxury.

While most of his pieces featured in nude tones of taupe and peach, Fast brought them to life with unconventional designs and tight-fitting styles. The Central Saint Martins graduate also drew inspiration from the Y2K punk rock scene, as models wore spiky hairstyles and dark smoky eye-looks to match their skin-tight clothing.

Jack Irving

Looking underwater for inspiration; Jack Irving’s London show was like nothing seen before. Inflatable purple tentacles, plexiglass corsets, and metallic bralettes were just some of the sea life-inspired garments that Irving sent down the runway. The pieces were brought to life through the raging electronic music and the enthusiasm of the diverse cohort of models who broke free from the inflatable wear to showcase the metal underwear that hid beneath.

When speaking about the show, the Blackpool-born designer, said he ‘sees the underwater goddess alien, a woman that is incredibly powerful’, demonstrating Jack’s allegiance to women and his ability to showcase the divine energy of femininity through his weird and wonderful designs.

Women weren’t the only ones Irving’s AW22 collection paid homage to, however, as the tight-fitting corsets and solid materials used were resemblant of late fashion designer Thierry Mugler’s work.

Saul Nash

Urban sportswear met high fashion at Saul Nash’s AW22 show, named ‘RITUAL’. The 29-year-old designer celebrated movement, London- inspired style, and individuality through his fluid menswear. Models danced and walked the runway in colourful garments, some were inventively coloured with a blended mesh of the hues from the Guyana flag, to celebrate the designer’s Guyanese heritage.

In true London style, the video promo for the show saw models dancing in downtown barber shops, adorned with colourful sportswear, which was impressively made with sustainable, Primaloft material. The unsuspecting setting was chosen based on the collection’s message of community and togetherness- and what better place to celebrate this community spirit than urban London?

Matty Bovan

On the day of one of the worst storms in the history of the country, Matty Bovan stepped into LFW with his rather aptly titled collection Cyclone. Serving as an homage to America, the collection was wild and exuberant featuring chaotic energy that has come to be a great staple of Bovan’s work. The rebellion was another strong theme present, noted by the vast array of loud, chaotic prints adorned across tattered coats and dramatically oversized capes, huge shoulder pads which call back to the classic rebellious movements of the past such as punk, and messaging that leaves us with a sense of hope for the future.

These looks aren’t generally the kind suited to everyday use heading to the shops, but they make bold, powerful statements and epitomize the kind of creativity and attitude that the fashion industry is all about.

Conner Ives

New York-born designer Conner Ives made his catwalk debut on Day 1 and, oh my, what a debut it was. Ives has garnered a reputation for his more sustainable approach to designer fashion by consistently reworking and restyling vintage clothes in an effort to give them new and prolonged life. This much was evident in his debut as a number of iconic Y2K staples were present throughout the show, not least with the abundance of plastic gemstones and loose, low-rise jeans.

The show carried a casual, yet still graceful, aura with a lot of attitude to boot. This seamless blend of casual elegance and refined edge gave the show lashings of personality which truly made it stand apart from the other shows present. Eras from the aforementioned Y2K through to 70s vintage were combined creating a glorious melting pot of looks that were both extremely familiar yet wondrously fresh at the same time.

Bora Aksu

Speaking of different eras and vintage clothing Bora Aksu took LFW all the way back to the 14^th Century for his collection. Can you really get more vintage than that? Set in the 19^th Century church in Pimlico, Bora Aksu’s collection served as a tribute to the Italian poet, writer and historian Christine de Pizan whose works have come to be regarded as some of the world’s earliest feminist writings. This is, of course, all evident in the clothes as the collection which was led by some gloriously Victorian-era dresses adorned with huge, puffy sleeves, neckties and ribbons, and plenty of lace material.

The show didn’t purely focus on the Victorian though as it also combined a number of 90s grunge elements too. Speaking to Vogue Runway, Bora Aksu said “We wanted to take Christine and bring her into the 1990s” continuing “We took that early Renaissance look and toughened it up a bit.” A glorious time warp of a collection!

Edward Crutchley

Heralded as exploring the intersection between the Gothic and the queer Edward Crutchley’s extravaganza kept its promise and delivered a fabulously dark and dramatic spectacle. Whilst there were only 21 looks on show, with some even having digital variants ready to go, each one was dripping with the 80s tinged personality with a combination of gothic, more subdued monochromatic pieces starring alongside exuberant gowns and jumpsuits in a stunning array of luscious pinks, purples, and blues.

Taking inspiration from an eclectic mix of Rick Owens, Giorgio Armani, and Romeo Gigli the collection was also not afraid of being sensual with some looks featuring more skin than actual clothing but done so tastefully and incredibly playfully. Combine all of this with a collection of accessories with just the right balance of subtle and extravagant, such as ludicrously long pink nails and shimmering tiaras, and you have a collection bold, beautiful and boundary-breaking. Strike a pose!

Seoul Fashion Week packed a colourful punch as it rounded off this month’s string of seasonal shows. With shows taking place under strict quarantine safety measures, the events of the week were devoid of audiences and instead live streamed via the show’s website and YouTube channel.

One of the most exciting changes to take place with this year’s Fall/Winter shows in Seoul was the change of scenery – and no, we’re not talking about the digital takeover. With the pandemic enforcing the closure of many major tourist attractions, designers were encouraged to stage their shows in these empty spaces for the first time in Fashion Week history. Models were seen strutting through the likes of the National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, as well as the Han Riverside Park and the Oil Tank Culture Park.

With an array of talented designers taking to the virtual runway for another week, it seems that fashion has found a new rhythm befitting the post-pandemic age. Seoul Fashion Week was another treat for the fashion-hungry, and ultimately did not disappoint. Read on to see some of the designers and brands that caught our eye this season.

Oct31

Headed by designer Sunil Kim, Oct31 seeks to express the classic value of traditional fashion in womenswear; the result is a FW21 Collection that incorporates the strong silhouettes of tailored suits into a feminine rhetoric. Supported by a limited colour palette of black, white, beige, grey, and russet, the Oct31 collection is based around classic outerwear. Blazers, vests, leather jackets, and ballooned trench coats are dramatically styled with long, textured skirts and wide leg trousers. The addition of leather gloves to each outfit only adds to the classic look and narrative; we can imagine the women wearing these clothes out on a long drive in a vintage motor vehicle. Stand outs from the collection include a sleeveless blazer styled with a long wrap skirt and elbow-length gloves; a russet suit; and an oversized pinstripe blazer belted over a feathery-textured skirt.

KWAK HYUN JOO COLLECTION

The KWAK HYUN JOO COLLECTION marries an individual’s unique sense of self with the visual language of career fashion, emphasising modes of self-expression through references to streetwear. Draped and oversized fabrics are used to create relaxed silhouettes, transforming traditional pieces like suits into a more casual look. However, it’s the mixing of prints that arguably steals the show; bold patterns like check and tie dye are juxtaposed with graphic imagery and textures, creating a visual palette that just falls shy of being too much. These patterns take on bold colours, opening up the colour scheme of the collection with brighter tones that we don’t usually see in colder months. These vibrant tones bring a liveliness to the season that captures the youthful vision of the brand.

HOLY NUMBER 7

HOLY NUMBER 7 create “romantic streetwear” that highlights the designers’ Christian faith. Each season, the brand aims to use their collection to tell a positive story based on the Bible. For FW21, HOLY NUMBER 7 quoted Genesis 9:7: “As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiple on the earth and increase upon it.” With an emphasis on this theme of abundance, the brand decided to use their collection to raise awareness of textile waste and environmental pollution. In doing so, the collection integrates sustainable practices such as the use of deadstock fabric. HOLY NUMBER 7 demonstrate that sustainability can still be stylish with a bold colour palette, mixed patterns, and layered silhouettes. Carrying a vintage vibe that still manages to look relevant and contemporary, the collection playfully mixes texture, colour, and pattern to create edgy streetwear. HOLY NUMBER 7 aren’t subtle in their layering technique either, packing together undersuits, skirts, shirts, waistcoats, corsets, and blazers (often in one look). This tactic offers a rich visual landscape that begs the audience to take a closer look at the interwoven details of each outfit.

GREEDILOUS

Unique print and pattern design lie at the heart of the GREEDILOUS brand. Multiple prints and colours run through GREEDILOUS’s FW21 Collection, providing cohesion through their arresting treatment of colour and exciting play on optical illusion. The chessboard motif is a common theme throughout the collection, manifesting both in check patterns and chess pieces. The maximalist approach of designer Park Youn Hee is a dynamic contrast with other designers’ preference for structured minimalism; you won’t find simplicity here, but you will find fun. Notable looks in the collection include a patterned blazer and pleated skirt in pink, red, choral, and turquoise; a red, black, and blue chessboard bomber jacket layered over a matching skirt and sheer star-patterned top; and a black leather jacket and skirt combo featuring heavy floral embroidery on the sleeves and hem.

BIG PARK

Park Youn Soo’s brand BIG PARK is all about using signature items to construct an urban wardrobe. Their FW21 Collection is dominated by a mix of pastels, primary colours, and neutrals, which are complemented by loose and flowy silhouettes. The outfits on show also incorporate fragments of artistic prints and images, like Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, which elevates the femininity of the collection as a whole. These visual references to female beauty are highlighted by long tulle skirts, ribbons, and dramatic peasant collars. However, these arguably more delicate details sit alongside heavy leather coats, boxy hoodies, and wide padded shoulders, injecting an understated edge that helps situate them in the urban visual landscape.

ENSUE

Launched in 2019, ENSUE is one of the newer brands to take to the digital runways of Fashion Week. Designer Ensue Hwang punctuates her brand with a contemporary romanticism that “combines the innocent beauty of a girl with the sophistication of a lady”, emphasising delicate femininity through luxurious materials and refined silhouettes. ENSUE’s FW21 Collection follows this narrative with its heavy use of lace detailing and ribbon, which simultaneously decorates long gowns and pleated miniskirts. Sticking to a strict colour palette of black and white, the looks on show have a clean and sharp appearance that complements the tailoring of some of the collection’s more structured pieces – in particular, its peplum corset tops, long coats, and suits. ENSUE create a collection that celebrates feminine elegance and the transitional overlap of youth and womanhood. One of the standout looks from the collection was a long white pleated dress with a ribbed crochet undershirt, styled with a black blazer and suit trousers.

DOUCAN

DOUCAN uses graphic artwork to “reinterpret the oriental fantasy of nature, light, and age”, with designer Chung Hoon Choi introducing new prints each season to create a distinctive collection. DOUCAN was one of the shows to watch this Fashion Week season – and rightly so, if the visual impact of the collection is anything to go by. Swirling patterns are a focal point of each outfit, taking the form of prints, beadings, and textured ruching. A detail of DOUCAN’s pattern manipulation that makes them stand out is how they use it to create form and structure; by aligning swathes of fabric symmetrically across the torso and sleeves of a dress, the brand gives an illusion of depth that also highlights the model’s natural curves. Pattern is often combined with blocks of solid colour on the shoulders, lapels, and belts, providing an interesting alternative to the cut-out trend. An outfit to look out for is the black floor length sheer gown covered in rows of floral print in primary colours.

The new digital landscape of AW21 Fashion Week continues to flourish from our computer screens. The most recent instalment in the show series takes place in Tokyo via Rakuten Fashion Week, where the organisers are mixing it up with a combination of livestreamed shows, look books, and pre-recorded video.

While some of us may miss the opportunity of seeing these shows in person, the fashion industry’s effort to make Fashion Week events inclusive are more than welcome in these uncertain times.

With that being said, we’ve been keeping an eye on the designers taking to the virtual stage in Tokyo. Read on to find out who has caught our eye and made us do a double take so far.

SEVESKIG

Making their Tokyo Fashion Week debut, SEVESKIG hit the virtual runway with a pre-COVID concept that emphasised casual meetings and get-togethers. Noted for their signature use of leather, SEVESKIG seek to combine elements of motorcycle-wear with idealised American visuals. The premise of the AW21 Collection in particular examines the brand’s stance on using real leather despite its growing disuse amongst the Japanese public; SEVESKIG’s founder, Takanori Nagano, believes that the durability and reusability of real leather makes it a more sustainable product despite how its reputation has suffered in recent years. This commentary shapes the collection in its visual presentation, which shows its models in gift packaging that questions: “What do you really know?” SEVESKIG’s collection celebrates this theme through the mixing of leather trousers, coats, and accessories with check and denim streetwear.

KEISUKEYOSHIDA

The theme of KEISUKEYOSHIDA’s AW21 Collection is “Like a dead pigeon”, a metaphor which is synonymous with the death tarot card: a fresh start from a seemingly bad end. Designer Keisuke Yoshida approached this from the angle of youth culture, in particular how young people seem to experience a “dull youth” due to the uncertainty of modern times. While set in a white classroom with bright purple desks and chairs, the collection itself references recognisable elements of girls’ school uniform – plaid and pleated skirts, knee-high socks, and loafers. Jackets and coats are pushed to the front of a look to imitate the silhouette of someone leaning forward, creating a hunched figure that highlights the idea of feeling downtrodden. Dead pigeons also feature as a graphic motif on the front of hoodies and coats. At face value, the collection promotes the narrative of dejected youth, but Yoshida has indicated this is simply a celebration of moving to a brighter future – times appear hard at present, but hindsight makes you realise how far you have progressed.

Mikio Sakabe

Material luminosity and metallic surfaces are offset by a largely neutral colour palette in Mikio Sakabe’s AW21 offering. Layering and oversized fits are used to create silhouettes which play on scale and shape, as seen by the collections takes on oversized puffy coats and structured blazers. Accessories and details also become part of the layering mechanism, taking on the form of multiple pockets, cross-body bags, and straps. The matte textures of the collection gradually begin to incorporate more metallic accents and fabrics, with a glittery sheer material being used to create flowing dresses and coats. The impact of the pandemic is also made apparent through the incorporation of masks, which cover the whole head save from an open strip across the eyes; these masks have a resemblance to both skiwear or hazmat suits.

beautiful people

With a brand motto that champions the saying “everything is beautiful”, beautiful people aim to design clothing that goes beyond a singular beauty standard. In doing so, the brand’s aesthetic brings together contradicting concepts and aesthetics to create their looks. Their AW21 Collection is no different, mixing multiple textures, prints, and shapes together to make a collection where each look can stand on its own. Favouring a colour palette centring on shades of black and grey, the collection favours exaggerated silhouettes which are created through large shoulder pads, wide sleeves, oversized fits, and drapery. Outerwear features prominently but isn’t limited to coats and jackets; models are seen wearing suit jackets as corsets in a new version of the three-piece. As a seasonal preference, hats are used as a main accessory to both complement and offset an outfit – you won’t find a trapper hat out of place when styled with a sheer, floral maxi dress.

ADELLY

The ADELLY brand seeks to highlight the elegance and grace of the female shape, characterised by A-line dresses and floral prints. Taking inspiration from 1940’s women’s fashion, ADELLY’s AW21 Collection takes all the structural components of a vintage silhouette and combines modern colour palettes and pattern blocking. High, conservative necklines are used to emphasise statement collars and ribbons, with knee and calf length skirts building on the optical impression of lengthening the lines of the body. ADELLY also build on this through their attention to linear forms, which ranges from stripes and pleats to vertical folds and lace detailing. The collection is overall characterised by a pervading softness that is reflective of ADELLY’s wish to celebrate femininity, with loose silhouettes, flared skirts, and pastel accents solidifying this visual message.

mintdesigns

Hokuto Katsui and Nao Yagi’s brand, mintdesigns, is all about breathing freshness into the fashion landscape. Their AW21 collection, titled The Night Circus, pushes these ideas to the forefront with a collection that plays on manipulations of scale and texture as well as representations of androgyny. The women’s brand blends more extreme elements of performance costume – stilted heels, gloves, and face paint – with fashion staples more commonly found in streetwear, like oversized jumpers and wide leg trousers. Pattern and texture also feature heavily as layering pieces, which build the visual depth of a look beyond its neutral base colour. A white shirt is layered with a floral printed skirt, another check print skirt, and a multi-textural black sweater vest. In another look, a long beige coat with white lace panels is draped over a pair of blue and white wide leg trousers. Clashing in the best way, these fragments are pulled together to create outfits that are fun to digest and pick apart.

Loewe

Creative Director, Jonathon Anderson innovates a compelling narrative to the Loewe Fall/ Winter 2021 collection. Enticing the audience with the striking headline ‘The Loewe Fashion show has been cancelled,’ he connects the collection to literacy; directly addressing the current challenges of pandemic life via the medium of a newspaper. Creating a narrative out of monochrome piles of
newspapers affords the opportunity for the pieces to conflict the scene, surfacing to prominence through their contrasting qualities. Vibrant colours and graphic prints, the collection encompasses an abstract and artistic take on fashion, inspiring individuality through empowering garments. One of the show’s highlights has to be the bracelet bag, offering a unique attraction towards a typically practical element. The collection as a whole, introduces new visions of shaping and construction, the colourful and futuristic spectacular make this collection lively and dynamic.

Chloé

Gabriella Hearst, the Creative Director at Chloé wanted the Fall/Winter collection to wholly emulate the luxury brand of Chloé, resembling joyfulness and femininity. This is achieved through the gorgeous broderie anglaise knitwear looks: a classic Chloé staple. When describing her vision for the AW21 collection, Hearst emphasises the importance of details within the luxury brand of Chloé. For example the ceramic buttons incorporated into the looks were designed and made within Paris, ensuring a sustained connection to the heart of the brand. Patchwork is a noticeable feature throughout the collection, expanding the brands dainty image to a street-wear vibe. The cape style coat makes an appearance within the collection but with an added twist. Evident within the shawl neckline, alternative textures of a shiny, metallic puffer coat appear; this adds a young and contemporary element to the capes.

Hermès and Isabel Marant

Models emerge from a landscape of Hermés’ renowned orange boxes. Hermés Autumn/Winter collection is kept simple with the cohesive use of materials, providing a textured theme of leather and denim looks. pieces are produced in vivid colours, giving the classic, smart material more energy and vibrancy.

Courrèges and Kristina Fidelskaya

The highlight of Courrèges collection has to be the bold accessorising. Starting with footwear, Courrèges collection is consistent in their inclusion of the thigh high boot. Established in an array of colours, Courrèges’ boots complete the outfits, acting as a fashionable substitute for tights. The attention to details throughout the accessories elevates the outfits to a higher level. The statement structured earrings add delicate and dainty details. The models rock sunglasses and baseball caps, seamlessly transitioning these typically summer staples into the colder seasons, working wonders for this chic and bold image.

Kristina Fidelskaya ‘BIBI’ autumn/winter collection also champions this emphasis on hats. The show is located in a sea of neutral tones, reflecting Kristina Fidelskaya beige, creams and camel colour scheme. The clothes are bright and light, similar to Courrèges summer inspired looks. Another similarity is the prominence of the headwear worn in most looks. Whether that is a baker-boy hat colour coordinated with the outfit ensemble or a cowboy hat coinciding with an on-theme trend of tassel emphasis, Kristina Fidelskaya styles these hats into the fall season effortlessly.

Alexandra Vaulthier

Alexandra Vaulthier’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection engages a masculine silhouette throughout the looks. This wide shouldered shaping is embellished through ruffles and dramatic sleeves, balancing the pieces with delicate detailing.This experimentation with the masculine and feminine is an interesting exploration seen throughout the collection, merging boundaries and challenging
classical silhouettes.

Coperni

Coperni’s fashion show really stopped traffic, located in a car park at night; the collection emerged from darkness, illuminated by car headlights. Coperni initiates slick and chic trends appropriate for future nights out in the city; with mini dresses as a key feature of the collection, Coperni is equipping us with gorgeous pieces for a sophisticated eveningwear look. A highlight of this collection has to be the iconic fur moments. Architecturally, the structuring of the coats are striking, they have so much volume and exuberate power and confidence, as well as looking super cosy. Layered over a slinky mini dress, these coats are perfect for Autumn Winter 2021. The colours Coperni’s primarily uses
are black and white staples underlined with pop neon accents, this fun element livens up the collection.

Paris Fashion Week may have gone digital but fortunately the iconic street style that defines it has not. 

The Parisian streets may have not been as busy and chaotic as in previous seasons but this didn’t deprive us of the stylish choices of our favourite designers, models and even locals.

Fashion Month Fall 2021 has brought us a taste of what the future of post-pandemic beauty trends could be. Predictions have suggested that after the global pandemic, we will see a rise in imaginative designs, growth and the celebration of freedom. The daring yet chic beauty looks from Fashion Month represent this expectation well. 

Moschino: Bold and bright 

Moschino created an ingenious short film to showcase their collection. The film began in the city, following through to the countryside, then to an art museum, the jungle and finishing in old Hollywood. Bold lips are a definitive look of the fall season at Moschino – they know how to be adventurous. At the beginning of the film, model Hailey Bieber walks out with a distinct red lip representing the powerful working woman. The countryside section of the short film sees flawless skin with bright nails and vivid peach-toned lips. Instead of the usual autumnal-toned lip shades, Moschino has pushed the boundaries with exciting pink lips. This very surreal production demonstrated the makeup and collection is for exiting lockdown. With the pandemic coming slowly to an end, Moschino’s spectacular makeup looks will be everywhere by the fall. 

Alice + Olivia: Gossip Girl 

During New York Fashion Week, it seems fitting for the programme Gossip Girl to make an appearance. After designer Stacey Bendet and her daughters became obsessed with Gossip Girl during quarantine, she realised how representative the fashion and makeup designs in the programme were of New York. Collaborating with Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman, they created iconic looks symbolic of the show. Inspired by rock and roll, the eye looks were heavy, smoky, and black. The makeup from the collection was a mix and match between two Gossip Girl characters Blair and Jenny. With a combination of Blair’s elegance and Jenny’s grunge, a stunning look was born.

Matty Bovan: Artistic Eyes 

During the colourful London Fashion Week, Matty Bovan brought a twist to the usual eyeliner look. Across the collection were statement eyeliner makeup looks. Painted all across the eyelids were heavy strokes of white and blue. Also seen in the show were gold strokes reaching the temples. Some even more dramatic, extending across the entire upper face. Matty Bovan stated that the idea behind these looks was humanity’s survival against external forces while battling reality. There was an element of storytelling to the show too. The models were representative of a crew of characters shipwrecked by a storm and emerging onto the shore. Imaginative and innovative makeup, ready in time for post-lockdown.

Prabal Gurung: Sleek Braids 

Sleek braids with pointed edges reigned the runway at Prabal Gurung during New York Fashion Week. With the world halting in creativity, Gurung found he lacked inspiration for his fall collection. Therefore, he drew his ideas while reflecting on why he moved to New York 20 years ago. As we live in uncertain times, Gurung wanted to create post-lockdown looks from the collection down to the makeup and hair. Evanie Frausto was the hairstylist behind the powerful braids that will become increasingly trending as we head towards fall. 

Vivienne Westwood: Blushing 

Inspired by the 18th-century, the models at Vivienne Westwood wore circular blush that was far from natural. A painting by Francois Boucher from 1743 inspired the makeup for the Vivienne Westwood show. Makeup artist Pablo Rodriguez created patches of harsh blush on the cheeks to portray the French portraits of the 18th century. Rodriguez described the makeup look as ‘the technicolour cherub’. 

Erdem: New And Improved Liner 

Updating the classic flick of eyeliner, Erdem designed distinctive eyeliner looks that you could see from a distance. Erdem’s modernised eyeliner look was inspired by English ballerina Margot Fonteyn’s on-stage makeup looks and her inspiring journey throughout her dancing career. There were different types of eye looks created with the liner that included an elaborate Cleopatra-like cat-eye. In opposition to the dramatic eye was a simpler, blunt-edged look. Erdem created a look that expresses dancers transitional experience during a performance. 

Emporio Armani: Bringing it back to the 80s

Inspired by the 80s, the Emporio Armani runway resembled something straight out of a dream. Driven by the 80s mood, the makeup designs included natural skin contrasted with a pop of colour on the cheeks. A subtly pink lip matched the delicate blush shade. This look was uncomplicated with refined hints of the electric 80s theme. After the troubling 70s, the 80s saw a boom of creativity. Through 80s inspired beauty and fashion, Emporio Armani is hoping for a similar situation this year as the pandemic comes to an end. 

Bora Aksu: 3D beauty

During London Fashion Week, a new way to cover dark circles emerged. Bora Aksu placed torn astrantia flowers underneath the eyes, leaving the rest of the face minimal. Many makeup trends across fashion month, including Bora Aksu, were inspired by the idea of leaving offline behind and getting back to real life. In a post-pandemic world, the 3D makeup embellishments will be loved and appreciated by many. 

Fendi: The side part

Fendi’s show proved that hairstyles previously deemed as uncool could be re-styled gracefully. The side parting hairstyle has made a comeback on the Fendi runway. Guido Palau was the hairstylist behind this look, making it look effortless. The hair swept from the left to the right of the forehead and secured loosely to the side. Successfully parting the hair to the side on the runway has made a statement that this will be an increasingly popular style as we head into the autumn months. 

Blumarine: Y2K 

The return of Y2K has made its way to the runways once again with Blumarine. Based on the ideas of optimism and sensuality, the looks seen at the Blumarine show commemorates femininity. The butterfly embellishments were created out of crystals by makeup artist Inge Grognard. On either the arms or chest of the models were the butterfly body jewels. A prominent glossy lip and a hint of blush on the cheeks co-ordinated well with the 2000s inspired outfits. This popular confident trend with a provocative element will continue to evolve.

Dolce & Gabbana is back on the main stage, and this time not as a result of controversy or out-of-touch cultural remarks. The Italian fashion house has finally caught up with the times, at least in terms of clothing, and is now reinventing its traditional approach to fashion and its circular trends. With its Fall 2021 Ready-To-Wear collection, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana presented their stylistic take on the online culture and cyber-world everyone’s part of.

It may have come as a surprise due to the classic choices that characterised the two designers, however, it was welcomed by many, including the Tik Tok community that seemed to strongly inspire the vision behind this collection. Each one of the looks can be perceived through a post-modern take on virtual reality and reappearing trends… The prominent silhouettes and textured materials remind us of the archive collections from the 90s but with a more exaggerated approach and the inclusion of tech-like colour palettes.

The designs left us speechless but their styling and complementation with futuristic
accessories were what made a difference for us; oversized coats, statement sunglasses and extravagant hairstyles and make-up looks diversifying the looks and making us dream about a colourful and daring return to normality is what helped in the rehabilitation of our image of D&G.

However, if you aren’t a fan of futurism don’t panic, classic elements were still present but in disguise. From tight leather pants to structured black corsets, although altered to match the new vision, they were still there to remind us of the essence of this brand and provide us with ultimate staples that will always mark the fashion landscape (or at least we hope so).

They range from delicate and dainty embellishments to winter maxi dresses, accessorised with boss women bags, bold print shoes, and iconic statement earrings. Milan AW21 has presented the chicest trends to accommodate a stylish return to normal life, finally showcasing our outfits and ensuring we are on-trend.

AW21 Bags: Go Big or Go Home

The AW21 bag is going to be a statement piece and a trend you aren’t going to miss, or want to miss. Milan Fashion Week collections place emphasis on large bags accompanying the models, in many cases these large bags are clutch style. Alberta Ferretti’s showcase their bags with the models hugging it as a means of transportation. Brands such as Tod, J W Anderson and Fendi embellish their large-scale bags with texture, such as faux fur and Sherpa materials. This trend in the ultimate boss move, it is bold, extra and empowering. Rather than cramming all belongings into a previously trendy miniature size bag, AW21’s upcoming trends are answering all our wishes. Affording the opportunity to carry our life and everything we could possibly need into one bag, wearing it with style and confidence.

The Bridgerton Inspired Collars

Popular Netflix series, Bridgerton, has been a lockdown watch for over 82 million households. Milan AW21 Fashion week has truly channelled this elegant aesthetic acquired by the Mayfair Debutants when dressing to impress. Philosophy di Lorenzo Sefani, Giorgio Armani and Alberta Ferretti are the leading labels that feature intricate tulle collars and delicately embellished neckline ruffles. This detailing frames the face beautifully and really elevates the looks to a sophisticated level. This trend is perfect for day-to-day use, when styling this neckline beneath jackets; it acts as an integrated accessory, totally effortless yet impressive.

Dresses for every season

Who said dresses are just for summer? The maxi dress will be joining us right into autumn and throughout winter. Salvatore Ferragamo has produced some gorgeous AW21 dresses; a collection highlight has to be the stunning ‘winter whites’ dress. Using a soft knit material, this off-the-shoulder maxi dress belongs in everyone’s winter wardrobe. This trend of transitioning the maxi into the

colder seasons is a power move; incorporating winter fabric into an iconic summer staple ensures the wearer is warm but most importantly, glowing.

Bold Print Boots

Boots are a staple throughout the autumn/winter season, typically used to dress up a low-key outfit. AW21 proves to be a high-key boot era; Prada’s AW21 collection entered the scene with geometric style boots. Departing from heals and substituting with a crazy coloured print, champions a boost of distinctiveness. If you want to hop on this trend but lean towards a subtler look, animal print boots are on the AW21 trend horizon established throughout the knee-high collections. Brands such as Moschino, Fendi and Alberta Ferretti encourage this desired attention towards the boot; rather than simply adding to an outfit, the AW21 boot creates the outfit.

Earrings For a Last Minute Wow Factor

No make-up, no problem, let the earrings do the talking. Earrings are an easy way to spice up an outfit and Milan Fashion Week exhibits an array of statement pieces that will dominate AW21 trends. Architecturally MFW earrings excelled through many brands, Etro showcased unique sculptural pieces with silver tassels, reflecting light and motion. Dangling earrings are the overriding feature within the collections, from Moschino’s bullet shape pendent to Alberta Ferretti’s beautiful golden ornaments upheld by a thin bar. This type of earring act as a magnet for attention and compliments, they even act as an awesome conversation starter, ready for Autumn 21 in-person interactions.

Kristína Šipulová, From the Yarns 

Kristína Šipulová launched in 2018. The basis of Kristina Sipulová is to focus on artistically exploring craft techniques, specifically those of local craftswomen. For London Fashion Week 2021, Kristina Šipulová’s collection; ‘From the Yarns’ is centred around the origins of the yarn itself. The collection is comprised of pieces that have been created with silk yarns from Japan, preserved cotton and linen yarns from Slovakia. As the designer describes, from their hometown (a small village in central Slovakia) they sourced linens that were worn hundreds of years ago for certain pieces in the collection. Even without this knowledge, however, it is easy to see the influence on the collection of the natural landscape of Kristína’s hometown. Though the garments carry an air of simplistic beauty, they do so deceptively. Kristína’s digital showcase of her collection allows the audience to gain an insight into not only the complex craftsmanship that each individual piece requires but the tales that are married with the vintage yarns used for the pieces. Kristína Šipulová effortless and airy collection features homely chunky knit sweater vests and boxy blazers.

Epica Jewellery 

Epica Jewellery was founded by Sharon Wendo. Interning with the Kenya Youth Empowerment Project, Wendo learned and found a passion for beading skills and from this, Epica Jewellery was born. In a film shot by Asande Maoga and directed by Michael Mwangi, Wendo debuted her first collection which was inspired by the many women in Wendo’s life. The collection seems to celebrate the female form, as the models powerfully stand tall, decorated in beautiful coloured jewellery. The intricate beadwork of each piece is captivating, and any one of these items has the power to elevate any ensemble. The collection is named ‘Jasiri’, a Swahili word which means brave. The collection certainly embodies this concept, as the jewellery in Wendo’s collection is striking. Wendo’s ‘Jasiri’ is permeated with a celebration of African culture and female power.

Tighe-Mearns-Smith, The Twelve Heads of Cerberus 

Kane Arthur Mearns-Smith and Jessica Tighe, the brains behind Tighe-Mearns-Smith, launched their ‘The Twelve Heads of Cerberus’ collection for London Fashion Week on Sunday. The reflective collection allowed Tighe-Mearns-Smith to pose questions about today’s idols and influencers, even putting forward their own collective twelve ideal leaders who best resonate as with the philosophers of Plato Kallipolis. The ideas these leaders hold (from Noam Chomsky to Mary Wollstonecraft) Tighe-Mearns-Smith believes will help guide us towards social progression. ‘The Twelve Heads of Cerberus’ marks the dawning of the Age of Aquarius from the Age of Pisces and draws on the ideas of these leaders. Shown through digital art in a mind-bending, cutting-edge style of graphics, the collection highlights include a painted corset and embroidered skirt, depicting a different tale in each panel. The collection is composed of upcycled, recycled and what has been deemed as ‘unsellable’ materials in order to ensure their collection is sustainable and thus, leads by example in terms of the environmental change within the arts and fashion industry that Tighe-Mearns-Smith would like to see. 

McQueen: The Long Lost Tapes 

One of Fashion Scout’s most surprising and moving events of the week includes the ‘Long Lost Tapes’ of Alexander McQueen. Black and white Super 8 footage taken by Gary Wallis (McQueen’s backstage photographer from 1992-6) shows footage commissioned by McQueen for a film he wished to display at an event in New York. The clip only aired once, exclusively with Fashion Scout on Sunday afternoon. Ian Bonhote and Peter Ettedgui, the directors of the McQueen documentary that was released in 2018 pressed for this footage to be located so it could appear in the documentary. As Fashion Scout states, the footage was unfortunately only recovered the day following the UK premiere of the documentary. ‘McQueen: The Long Lost Tapes’ was a beautiful surprise addition to London Fashion Week. The film depicts Alexander McQueen roaming around the landscape of Hilles House alongside Isabella Blow (his muse). The footage shows Isabella clothed in McQueen as Alexander cartwheels around. In another clip, Wallis documents the locations in London which were meaningful to McQueen, including his chosen fabric store; Greenscourt. Finally, we see McQueen backstage of his 1994 show in Paris. The film shows McQueen still experimenting with the clothing right up until the moment the models walk the designs in front of the cameras. This clip reminds us of McQueen’s innovative and controlled chaotic approach to art and design. 

Eleven years after McQueen’s passing, the clip displayed for London Fashion Week was a beautiful commemoration of McQueen. A designer whose work continues to resonate with and inspire audiences even today, who is heavily missed and admired.  

Fashion Scout’s events evoked a sense of positivity from audiences in regard to where the fashion industry is headed. The week was filled with educational, mindful, and exciting events, from the insightful Fashioning in West Africa series to Petra Kovac’s Lobster Party collection that looked at the environmental issues attached to coral bleaching. Fashion Scout’s talent has shown the environmentally and socially conscious direction that the industry is now encompassing, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
