Last week, Urban Decay introduced three more daring women to join their Global Citizens program. The new ambassadors include singer Normani, as well as Camila Mendes and singer G.E.M to act as spokespeople for the brand. All to champion diversity and to recognise individuality in the beauty industry. Hell yeah.

The trio join Lizzo, CL, Joey King and, Karol G in the campaign, acting as ambassadors for the brand, celebrating their individual uniqueness as artists and, to preach Urban Decays philosophy. To “challenge the status quo by celebrating differences and embracing unapologetic individuality.”

Speaking to Elle.com about the new campaign, Normani said: “I want to amplify Black stories to help dismantle systematic racism. I wholeheartedly believe that through this collaboration, I have a real opportunity and obligation to the black community, not only to lift my voice but all of theirs through this mission.

She also took to her Instagram to commemorate the brand for their efforts in diversity, writing: “They have trail-blazed and challenged the industry’s definition of beauty since the beginning. They stand with marginalized groups by showing that makeup should be and can be inclusive for everyone.”

Alongside their Global Citizen campaign, the brand have introduced another palette to the NAKED family. In keeping with their signature purple shade, the new Ultraviolet palette houses 12 super pigmented shadows that, like the new ambassadors, are not afraid to show off their colours.

While this palette certainly packs a punch in its shade range, its versatility of matte, shimmer and metallic shades offers something for everyone. For every day, peachy neutrals are ideal for a simple base and can be amped up with a deep purple shimmer in the crease. For real, the possibilities with this palette are endless.

Normani, Mendes, and G.E.M all feature in the new promotional video and images, rocking a vivid purple eye look, blowing a gum bubble, boogying on the table, and partying the night away. Ugh, post-lockdown vibes right!

Remember back in the day when the o-g NAKED palette was launched? It was all about the neutrals and achieving that “no makeup makeup look.” Well, ten years on and neutrals are no longer. Keep on coming with the colours please.

So, with summer on our doorstep, it’s the perfect makeup opportunity to inject a bit of colour and experimentation into our everyday eye look. Agree?

Due to Coronavirus, the world as we know it has markedly changed in such a short period of time. Millions of us must do our part and practice social distancing to take the load off our health care systems and essential workers and to help slow the spread of COVID-19. As a result, many of us are stuck in our homes and boredom is on the rise. Companies have had to change the way they run and advertise. It comes as no surprise then, that the beauty industry, along with many other industries, has taken to Instagram to keep their businesses going. For us at home, this means a lot of content to help us manage our boredom and spend our increased free time having fun and keeping busy.

Many cosmetics companies have used Instagram’s live feature to interact with their consumers. Benefit Cosmetics recently had their global brow expert come on to the app and answer questions about brows sent in from the public. He also allowed people to join the live stream so they could discuss makeup and eyebrows. Similarly, Milk Makeup hosted a Get Ready With Me style live stream in which viewers could join and chat about all things beauty.

Many influencers are turning to Instagram to give tutorials, which are easier to digest quickly compared to those on YouTube. Mmmitchell was one such person and he created a beautiful makeup look on a model for his viewers. Jen Atkin, famous for her work styling the hair of many famous celebrities, used Instagram live to demonstrate how she clipped her husband’s overgrown eyebrow hairs, much to the amusement of her audience. She also used Instagram to show how she styled her husband’s hair, this is especially useful during quarantine when hair is getting longer but there are no hair salons to turn to.

Other companies are using Instagram to promote new products. Urban Decay hosted a live stream with one of their regional artists in Portland, Oregan. Her live stream was focused on the brand’s Perversion Mascara in a ‘makeup home-school’ setting. Similarly, Morphe did a live collaboration with Suva Beauty in which they discussed makeup but mainly promoted the Suva Beauty UV eyeshadow palette. However, not all businesses are using Instagram for their live stream capabilities. Millie Bobby-Brown has been using the IGTV feature to put out longer, more cohesive videos aimed for people in self-isolation. Recently, she produced a video about self-care at home, in which she and a friend used Millie’s newly released detoxifying and calming face masks. Kylie Cosmetics got inventive and held a Lip Kit quiz using Instagram’s stories, in which viewers could vote for one of two lip kit colours in relation to a picture on the story. Benefit Cosmetics have even curated a Spotify playlist for you to listen to during quarantine, so it’s not just your beauty credentials that can be expanded but your music taste too!

This huge boost in Instagram content is uplifting for so many beauty lovers who are stuck inside with nowhere to go. It has also seen brands like Beauty Blender, who had never produced live content before, host both makeup related live streams and also workouts, making sure it is looking after the mental and physical well-being of its consumers. Bobbi Brown has also released a timetable of their Instagram live content if you are afraid of missing out. What is important to take from this is to keep a lookout for content which makes you feel normal and happy in the strange and unprecedented times we are living in. The people behind these live streams are just like you; they are all at home and finding ways to cope, so keep being creative, keep exploring makeup, take care of your skin and your general health, and in the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for new content from your favourite brands to keep you grounded.

A trend that was way too underrated, colourful mascara is just such a unique way to add a pop of colour to your usually ordinary makeup look. It’s such a different way to stand out and be bold; like when you feel you need something to match your confidence, just go and slap on some bright blue mascara – honey you will feel like Michelle Obama: powerful with lashes like that!

The colours show up richer on lighter hair colour, however, if you’re struggling for that vibrant oomph, try using a white eyelash primer beforehand; this will just create a blank canvas so that the mascara colour will go on easier and without having to go against a darker hair first. A great lash primer is Max Factor Lash Revival Volume Boosting Primer £12.99, which also has vitamin E and oils to keep your lashes healthy and hydrated.A great tip if you’re struggling to cover the lashes from the roots is to use a fan brush, this will help coat as many lashes as possible giving you a much more vibrant polished look.

Let’s start with gold mascara, which you might think would just make you look like one of the rich people in the Hunger Games…but we promise it’ll look so much better! Urban Decay has a whole range of coloured mascaras called Team Special Effect Coloured Mascara £19.50, which comes in 5 different shades. The gold one is called Dime/Goldmine with one side being gold and the other being a beautiful silver. Try an Egyptian black liner look with black mascara on the top lashes and gold on the bottom, the black background makes the gold pop so much better.

Moving onto blue mascara which is probably the most popular colour (if it isn’t brown or black). I tell you what, it’s so hard to find coloured mascara that is anything other than blue; it’s so strange that companies have discontinued most of their bright mascaras since the trend died down! Make Up For Ever had a fantastic range but, well we all know what happened there. Anywho; This look is probably my favourite, using the mascara on the bottom lashes and as a cat flick liner, just pop on some regular black lashes on the top lash line and the look is just so well put together. My favourite blue mascara just has to be Benefit Cosmetics Badgal Bang in blue £22.50. It’s just so pigmented and Badgal Bang is an award-winning mascara!

Pink mascara, now this is what we’ve been waiting for. Who doesn’t want barbie lashes?! For this look, try out the YSL Beauty Vinyl Couture Mascara in Fuchsia £26. A beautifully smooth texture paired with a lengthening brush which is meant to be ‘as bright as a vinyl’. There really is only one way to do pink mascara…smother the rest of your eye in a one toned pigmented pink shadow for that duo matching killer look.

To finish this colourful lash moment we’ve been having, last but certainly, not least is the NYX Worth The Hype Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara in purple £9. Yep, you read that right, £9. We all know NYX is one of the incredibly cheap-but-actually-works brands, so it just wouldn’t be right to not include their products. An amazing blend of volumizing and lengthening formula and bold purple tone works perfectly with a natural lip and eye to let your eyes do all the talking.

For all the times your makeup starts running and for all the reasons, sex should not be one of them. The mascara running red lipstick smudged look is not the look to go for during those intimate moments so here are a few products that keep your face on when everything comes off.

Base:

Start the base with the fantastic Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer £17. Oil-free and waterproof, not to mention makes your skin crazy smooth and silky to apply the rest of your make-up on; trust me your skin isn’t going anywhere with this bad boy. Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation £34 is such an iconic waterproof base, we all know about its sweat-proof, oil proof, waterproof, life-proof properties. It’s a liquid to powder formula so it dries matte to the point where you don’t even really need a powder, and the coverage is just to die for it’s the perfect in-between medium and full coverage. Next, try Smashbox Studio Skin 24hr Waterproof Concealer £20. I mean I don’t need to say much more, the name kind of sells itself…it works.

Now one thing which you never really think could be waterproof is bronzer, think again! IT Cosmetics Ombre Radiance Bronzer £25 is such a fantastic bronzer and it won’t budge after the dirty deed. It has such a naturally pretty warmth to it and also has something called ‘Drops of Light Technology’ which basically means it will treat and nourish the skin while it imparts a seamless, sun-kissed glow.

To set the skin and lock all that into place (light it needs locking anymore) the famous and iconic Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray £24 is always a winner, you really can’t go wrong I mean this stuff is like cement.

Eyes:

Eyes can be a tricky one with eyeshadow, but Nudestix Magnetic Nude Glimmers are so great, they come in 3 shades and as well as being waterproof (obvs at this point) the gel can be layered up to create more and more luminosity and glow to the eyes; they also can be used to highlight the cheekbones too for some extra glitter. A great budge -roof eyeliner is the Inglot Black Gel Liner £14 which, to be honest, if you compare to some other gel liners it’s actually super cheap and so worth it in my opinion. Pair that with Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara £27, which instantly thickens and lengths your lashes with one sweep from the brush.

Finish the look off with Beauty Bakerie Matte Lip Whip £19. I mean these lip formulas are so waterproof that they have their own remover just for this product! They have incredible pigment and glide on so smooth you’ll think its butter.

When you’ve tried all these products gems your face will be so sex proof you’ll look better after than before!

The biggest trend at the minute in the beauty world has just got to be beautiful and glowy skin, you know like in every single Charlotte Tilbury advert where all the models look like angels with beautiful glowy, well glowy everything! Base

1). We’re going to start this at the very beginning with your primer; Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturiser & Primer £44.50 for 50ml. An absolute beauty this one is – it works as a moisturiser and primer and is so unbelievably nourishing on the skin, not to mention it will keep your make-up dewy and on your skin all day.

2). Next, layer on the iconic Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation £42, an oil-free, lightweight and so-silky-you-could-die foundation. Super buildable and applies seamless, no wonder this is the Artist’s Choice 10 years in a row!

3). A winner as always is YSL Touche Eclat High Coverage Concealer £26; So, this isn’t the regular one everyone has dribbled over for years, that one was actually marketed as just a highlighter whereas this one is predominantly a high coverage concealer. You still get the beautiful luminosity of the OG Touche, but also a weightless and long wear concealer… really struggling to find a flaw here.

4). If that wasn’t illuminating enough for you so far, I’ve only just begun! Add even more glow with the YSL Touche Eclat Shimmer Stick £27. Cream/liquid products are really going to make your cheeks extra dewy as they catch the light super easily. This stick highlight comes in 5 different shades, my fav being the gorgeous champagne ‘Light Gold’, I mean just go into a store and swatch this on your hand it genuinely might be the prettiest thing I have ever seen. (Prove me wrong, I dare you!!) I mean the actual product has all the good stuff: easy to blend, super creamy and a lightweight texture. TBH, if you like a shimmery bronzer, you can easily use a darker shade to add some warmth to your skin.

5). Totally changes the game: NARS Orgasm Liquid Blush £25. I mean NARS’ ‘Orgasm’ range is iconic, we all know and adore it…this is just in a lightweight liquid form so it’s just another staple to add to the dewy trend.

6). Lastly for the base, slap on that Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray £24 to make sure your base doesn’t move all day…whatever your activity is. I’ve heard great things about this setting spray being 100% sex-proof; you can be the judge of that.

Eyes and Lips

1). Keeping with this gorgeous healthy glowy skin trend, Charlotte Tilbury Bigger Brighter Eyes Palette ‘Exagger-Eyes’ £40. OK, I know you’re thinking it’s a little pricey for 4 shadows, but honey if you just knew what these bad boys were capable of! All you have to do is watch one of those CT adverts I was talking about. Nuff said. I mean they’re just everything: buttery, pigmented, the product itself is just such amazing quality it’s insane! You’ll thank me.

2). The current brow trend is messy, undone and natural; easy as pie, brush up your brows with the tinted Benefit Cosmetics Gimmie Brow+ £22.50 for a full and put together bro duo that takes literally seconds.

3). You need to keep them hooked on your eyes…the only way is to add a sultry liner on your waterline. A black liner on the waterline is so sexy it really draws you to the eyes; even I give myself a double-take when I whack some on. My fav is Estee Lauder Double Wear Waterproof Eyeliner ‘Noir’ £19, just glides on the eyes so easily and stays all day. Even great for contact wearers like myself.

4). To finish the eyes off, add some famous Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara £22 (TBH if your flying solo this V day, this mascara is supposedly better than sex, and if you have a partner, you’re going to need that waterproof one…win win). Volumizing without being too clumpy, and it deff won’t transfer on your lids or under eye.

5). Last but certainly not least, chuck on some Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick ‘Glowing Jen’ £28. This was actually named after Jennifer Aniston and I believe a portion of the money for this collection goes to charity. Moisturising and so pretty and glowy oh my goodness it’s insane.

Despite Dior’s announcement this April that, woman of the moment, Jorja Smith, would be the new brand ambassador following the likes of Bella Hadid (a standard beauty representative), and similarly Zendaya becoming an ambassador for Lancôme, we can still agree that both Jorja and Zendaya, as a light-skinned P.O.C.s, still somewhat conforms into beauty standardisation more than a P.O.C. with a darker complexion, and less ‘westernised’ features.

While there is no dispute all these women are iconic, powerful, and aspiring women to many, ultimately they are continuing a narrative of beauty; we are being blindsided to a broader range of what is beauty.

It’s no wonder that brands like Fenty Beauty, Uoma Beauty, Milk Makeup, and Glossier have been making such headway within the industry. Championing those who are darker skinned, incredibly light skinned (people with albinism), plus-sized, and queer is tapping into a vast market that is willing to pay as much as the ‘norm’.

Scrolling through Instagram you see the same images, over and over again, a hegemonic class of beauty – so Urban Decay’s ripple in the wave, their campaign named ‘Pretty Different’, was an appreciated surprise – a critique of the normalcy and banality of ‘Instagram beauty’.

She needs no introduction as Lizzo has taken the world by storm the past year, performing at the BET awards this month, causing a standing ovation from Rihanna. She is unashamedly larger than life, a source of confidence for plus-size women who needed her.

Karol G

A Colombian reggaeton singer/songwriter, who has won a Latin Grammy award, and has a colossal following of 18.8 million followers.

Her representation of Latin Americans comes at an important moment, against the growing racism and marginalisation commencing in the States.

CL

A K-pop star with 7.5 million followers, who was a member of worldwide phenomenon 2NE1. Having become an international sensation, rapping, singing and generally being unafraid to dream of doing her own thing – she perfectly embodies unapologetic individuality.

Joey King

The it young adult actress who became a household name (particularly a household with a teenager in it) after the hit Netflix film The Kissing Booth.

Having recently starred in The Act, a biographical series about Gypsy Rose Blanchard on Amazon Prime, she made the brave choice to shave her head for the role. Her candidness about the hardship and emotional toll such a dramatic change had on her, plus becoming a role model for young women, she is an unadulterated representation of Generation Z women.

Ezra Miller

Queer icon, Ezra Miller, made his name as an actor in films such as We Need to Talk about Kevin, The Stanford Experiment, Perks of Being a Wallflower, and the more recent Fantastic Beasts series. Yet it was the premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald that brought Miller’s brilliantly bonkers fashion to many attentions.

His fluidity towards gender, fashion and makeup is the very much needed opposite embodiment of contemporary beauty advertising.
