Good American was founded in 2016 by Emma Grede and Khloe Kardashian with a focus on empowering women with comfy and practical items with a commitment to inclusivity and body positivity, coming in sizes 00-24. Every product is shown with three models of different sizes, so customers can picture themselves in the clothing, and the brand hosts open castings and uses influencers like Mahala Preudhomme, Nadia Aboulhosn, and Denise Mercedes.

Body Glove is a household name and has been selling swimwear for over 70 years. Founded in 1953 with the phrase ‘fits like a glove’, co-founders Bill and Bob created the first practical wetsuits using neoprene in an attempt to combat the cold California water when surfing. Body Glove now sells wetsuits, swimsuits, clothing, shoes, sunglasses, water sports equipment, and accessories and mainly uses pro surfers and wakeboarders as influencers.

The Kardashians have been seen wearing Body Glove many times, like Kim’s silver bikini in Tahiti, but most memorable is Kris Jenner’s 80s swimsuit being stolen by her daughter, Kylie Jenner.

The collaboration involved drawing inspiration from the Body Glove archives and re-engineering the classic Body Glove silhouettes to cater to a wider size range, with items being sold in sizes XS-5XL plus. The pieces range from high-leg one-pieces, swim skirts, biker shorts, zip-up bikini tops, long sleeves, halter neck tops, and classic bikini sets. The styles were also altered to ensure they enhanced curves and gave the signature Kardashian hourglass shape, flattering all body types. Another big change was the colour scheme, with bright fuchsia and shimmering gold being the focus of the collection. With details like black panelling and zippers being maintained, this collection is making us want to run along a beach to the Baywatch theme song!

After catching glimpses of the House of Gucci outfits via paparazzi photography, the trailer has assured us that the costumes are going to be iconic! Drawing from the Gucci archives, Oscar-winning costume designer, Janty Yates has created a 1980s fantasy.

The trailer opens with Lady Gaga, as Patrizia. Immediately absorbed into character, she is dawned in a burgundy v-neck, with a fur overcoat, oversized round sunglasses, and chunky, sparkling jewellery. We first see the chic, more refined couture of the 1980s, understandably so, to reflect the wealth amassed by the Gucci brand.

Whilst the heavy 1980s styling of skirt and blazer power suits, long fur coats, loud jewellery, and permed and teased hair suggest the movie is predominantly based in the 1980s, subtle nods towards 70s disco are also included. Occurring at a transitional period between the late glamour of the 1970s and the dramatic silhouettes of the 1980s, the costuming references both eras. Gaga is seen in a turquoise glittering halterneck, with permed hair and bangles during a lively party.

Adam Driver is defined as Maurizio Gucci in tailored suits of rich fabrics. 1980s menswear collections often relied on suits as the main garments. Gucci retains notoriety today for their suits, specifically thanks to celebrities like Harry Styles who continues to wear the flared and colourful costumes. An unrecognisable Jared Leto, as Paolo Gucci, wears a Styles-esque pink monochromatic, corduroy suit, which he states is ‘chic’. The colourful combinations worn by Leto indicate Alessandro Michele’s dedication to maintaining some of Gucci’s house history today, as they are still ‘chic’.

The trailer’s title graphics, introducing the actors, even adopts the iconic green and red Gucci stripes. This motif is rooted in the house’s history in 1921, opening as a leather goods manufacturer. Inspired by Italian saddle detail, the branded green and red stripe is still popular in their designs today.

During a ski trip, Gaga as Patrizio still retains her socialite costume in pink Christian Dior ski goggles and a matching puffy coat, belted in the middle to achieve the 1980s cinched silhouette with boxed shoulders.

Blessing herself and stating, ‘father, son, and House of Gucci’, Gaga wears one of the most definitive eighties looks: a ruched and ruffled, pink polka dot cocktail dress. Accompanied with permed hair, heavy eye makeup, and a chained choker, the outfit could not be more definitive of the 1980s if it tried.

Though some might gasp and shudder at the thought of 1980s fashion with images of neon colours and parachute pants, the costumes for House of Gucci is nothing to be afraid of. The wealth of the Gucci family has allowed Yates to define them in a chic wardrobe of couture. Whilst the eighties did bring leg warmers and lycra, it also defined the wardrobe of the working woman in oversized power suits, cocktail dresses, and chunky jewellery. The House of Gucci styling could cause a resurgence of 1980s trends, thanks to the costuming design of Yates making the eighties fashionable again.

Grace Jones, the iconic musician of the 70s and 80s, was famous beyond being an amazing musician — she was also famous for her incredible fashion sense. She originally started as a model for Parisian fashion houses, including Yves Saint Laurent, and went on to appear on the cover of numerous magazines, including Andy Warhol’s Interview. 

And now in 2021, her sharp-edged shoulders and bold imagery is providing the perfect intensity of inspiration for today. Olivier Rousteing at Balmain went fabulously intense this S/S, by peaking shoulders into a magnificent pagoda cut, perfectly suited for the most dramatic of personalities and/or occasions.

Alexander McQueen AW20

Sarah Burton celebrated beautiful intensity at McQueen, by adding operatic shoulders to velvet and silk jackets in dramatic shades of red and black. The shoulders are paired with slick ultra-long line boots that feel very Grace Jones all the way to the ground.

Balenciaga FW20

Demna Gvasalia added a twist to the dramatic shoulder trend at Balenciaga, throwing in green pleats and polka dots to peaked shoulders – all more than enough to ensure that you could stand out in any venue.

Givenchy SS21

This season Matthew H. Williams beautifully matched the intensity of squared up shoulders at Givenchy, with sheer and bejewelled textures to key the eye interested.

Carolina Herrera Resort II 21

Carolina Herrera turned up the volume of not just the shoulder but of the fabric as well, on this gloriously liquefied gown that projects shimmering perfection.

The Channel 4 series It’s A Sin made waves recently for its exploration of gay culture during the 1980’s, when the HIV and AIDS crisis began to unfurl in the UK. The show was praised for capturing the hearts of the nation and educating many on a topic that was considered very taboo in the past, with 18.9 million views on All4, this show has a buzz about it that will last.

Costume designer Ian Felcher took the reins for the characters’ outfits, looking into 80’s fashion beforehand to investigate LGBTQ+ culture, youth tribes, and overarching fashion staples. The result took many viewers back to the decade with its authenticity and diversity of references.

Jill Baxter (played by Lydia West) became an icon of the show as an LGBTQ+ ally, standing on the frontline to raise awareness of the growing pandemic and support those who were diagnosed. The character was based on Jill Nalder, an activist and actress who lived in London during the peak of the AIDS crisis. Noticing how many young men simply disappeared and later losing many of her close friends to AIDS, Nalder went on to raise money for research into the disease and visited many patients in hospital who didn’t have visiting family.

Every time an episode of It’s A Sin aired, #bemorejill would trend on social media platforms. In recognition of the importance of HIV and AIDS awareness and the strength of Jill’s character in the show, we’re taking a look at how to “Be More Jill” in both spirit and fashion. Check out our list below to see how you can incorporate a bit of Jill into your life and wardrobe.

High-Waisted Jeans

Jill’s style is characterised by casual streetwear, and nothing says casual like a good pair of jeans. 80’s trends favoured high-waisted fits that were snug at the waist (we love a good cinch) and fell into a straight or tapered leg. A common trend amongst teenagers was ‘pegging’ jeans – rolling them up at the cuff so that they fit snug around the ankle.

Denim Jackets

Most of the cast of It’s A Sin can be spotted wearing a denim jacket or two, often paired with jeans in the same wash. Jill’s denim jacket was a staple of her wardrobe, and you can see her wearing one throughout the entire series. More oversized than fitted, Jill styled her denim jacket with jeans, jumpers, and dresses, and in true 80’s fashion wore an upturned collar.

Blazers and Suits

The 80’s saw more women than ever wearing suits, both for the workplace and as an edgy style staple of performance culture. The introduction of the shoulder pad created a new iconic silhouette that emphasised the angularity of the shoulders. Jill is seen wearing a suit for her singing performances with Ritchie, a look which plays on the androgyny and ‘dandyish’ suit styling of the New Romantic movement (which was made popular by queer icons such as David Bowie and Boy George). You can see that Jill pulls the suit together with an oversized white shirt, a thin black belt, dangling earrings, and a pink scarf tied around her neck.

Oversized Jumpers and Cardigans

An oversized knit was a common trend of the era, and one which Jill is seen wearing on multiple occasions in It’s A Sin. The oversized fit was popular amongst younger people at time, favouring bagginess and paired with denim jeans. Jill’s jumpers and cardigans followed the trend by incorporating vibrant colours and patterns, from stripes and flowers to diamonds and block colours.

Shirts and Blouses

Shirts and blouses saw a revival of 1940’s fashion, with an emphasis of collars, bows, and ties. Patterns became incredibly popular and included stripes and abstract patterns, as well as tropical and floral prints. Vibrant colours combined with silky materials gave the 80’s shirt a glamourous finish that fit well in the club scene. Jill’s turquoise shirt with faint diamond patterning is a prime example of this style; worn for a house-warming party, the shirt is a bright pop of colour that is emphasised by a pair of dark striped trousers.

Graphic T-Shirts

The t-shirt was brought to the forefront of popularity in the 80’s through the numerous ways prints could be applied to it. Images of celebrities, TV and film characters, and company logos such as MTV could be printed across the front of t-shirts to indicate a person’s interest in current pop culture. The t-shirt also became more widely used for rallies and protests, as seen in Its’ A Sin, where the cast are seen wearing t-shirts with the words “AIDS NEEDS AID!” for a peaceful protest against unethical practices of pharmaceutical companies. The t-shirt is a prominent symbol to raise awareness of AIDS in the show, and Jill’s character is shown wearing hers proudly throughout the rally.

Shirtwaist Dresses

A shirtwaist dress – collared, buttoned down the front, and cinched at the waist with a belt – was a popular design for young women in the 80’s. As with shirts, the style was a revival of 1940’s fashion and was often put together with a denim jacket and lots of jewellery. Jill’s mint-coloured shirtwaist dress is worn on a night out with the gang, bringing a brighter note to the more muted colour palette worn by the rest of the cast. Her dress falls below the knee and is worn with a thin belt, brown shoulder bag, and a gold watch.

Chunky Jewellery

Big, bold, and flashy jewellery was on trend for much of the 80’s, with an emphasis on stacking, mixing, and matching individual pieces to multiple variations of one look. Large earrings, in particular hoops and dangling earrings, were a popular staple of ‘going out’ wear and were often paired with matching bracelets and necklaces. Bangles and cuff were also often used to finish off an outfit, stacked together in twos or threes. The promotional posters for It’s A Sin see Jill adopt this trend in all its vibrant glory, stacking multi-coloured bangles and donning blue tear-drop shaped earrings to offset her dress.

Hair Accessories

The hairstyling of the 80’s is iconic for more than one reason. Voluminous curls were all the rage, and bows, clips, barrettes, headbands, and scrunchies were the preferred means of styling hair. Jill is seen on multiple occasions were brightly coloured scrunchies to either tie her hair up or wear it in a half-up, half-down style. However, it was her use of a bandana as a headband that caught our eye. Seen wearing it during her first interactions with Ritchie, Jill’s headband is iconic for its incorporation of colour and a large bow.

Female suiting, despite a somewhat popular opinion, is no new trend: think Coco Chanel’s tweed, Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking and Maggie Thatcher’s abundance of two pieces. But somewhere along the timeline of power dressing, ladies in suits took a dreary, corporate turn and were reduced to the BHS fitted three-quarter-length shirt and knee-length pinstripe skirt combo we saw on the likes of The Office and Bridget Jones’ Diary throughout the noughties.

‘Power Dressing’ is a concept allowing women to assert dominance (usually within a professional environment) over their typically male counterparts by dressing in a certain way. In the 80’s, it was all the rage, exhibit A: Working Girl’s Tess McGill. The film’s bitchy boss Katharine quotes Coco Chanel in what might be the most perfect way to verbalise female suiting: “Dress shabbily and they notice the dress. Dress impeccably and they notice the woman.”

Spring Summer 19 suits by Alexa Chung, Moschino and Chanel

Fast forward (quite) a few years, and the office suit began to experience an ever so slight change of character. Yes, we’re referring to the aforementioned BHS era. There was a (relatively lengthy) period in which power suiting failed to execute the ‘power’ element so effectively. That is, until now.

Lo and behold, 2017 saw suits for women resurface after something of a makeover. That is, the kind of makeover that may be recognised by some as the post-breakup-dramatic-hair-change. The bright, pastel and patterned suits still lining the rails of just about every high street shop and strutting the catwalks in various different shapes and sizes, are important. After all, how else will we successfully take over our evil bosses, Tess-style?

The best thing about suits has to be the fact that they manage to exist as perhaps the only outfit suitable for both a job interview and a wedding simultaneously. Not to mention just about every other possible occasion: first date? Dress it down with a t shirt and trainers for a cool, ‘don’t give a sh*t’ vibe. Off to work? Take the blazer off for your sweaty underground commute and pop it back on when the afternoon air-con gets a bit much. Grandma’s Sunday lunch? She’ll be sure to tell you that you look ‘very smart’.

In conclusion: we’re fans of power dressing. Now get that bread, girl – and do it in your two-piece.
