]]> Summer means it’s time to get rid of our comfortable knits and turtlenecks to make space for flowy
dresses and crop tops. But with all the usual summer clothes we also bring back a friend from the
past. From the mid-2000s, to be precise. As seen on the Spring/Summer 2022 runway, designers
bring back micro miniskirts, the tiniest skirts you have seen, and the perfect piece to elevate your
y2k fit. Maybe not the most comfortable outfit, but a fashion statement that shows who you are and
what you are about. TikTok and our favourite celebrity’s Instagram feeds have become indispensable
for these incredibly tiny skirts. Here are our favourite micro skirt Instagram looks:

We start with a bang! UK designer Mowalola returned to fashion week and presented their
“Burglarwear”, inspired by an examination of what it takes to steal. One of their most breath-taking
looks is the acid yellow barely-there leather fit. The micro skirt is scaringly short, with longer
applications on the sides. The skirt is connected to a wide stripe with a zip that goes up the body and
ends in a high collar, showing incredibly much skin. This outfit is accessorized with black leather
over-knee boots and a bag with a red strap. Definitely not an everyday look, but cool and edgy,
nonetheless.

Influencer Cannelle is a real Insta baddie. Her outfits scream y2k and are an inspiration. In her recent
look, the beauty is wearing a black pleated micro skirt embellished with eyelets and a red spider web
embroidered to the back. She paired it with an orange crocket bra top, white socks and nylon puffy
ankle boots. A silver choker around her neck and star chains in her hair finish this unique look.

The Miu Miu micro skirt has been everywhere. It’s an absolute y2k celebrity staple, from Hailey
Bieber to Nicole Kidman wearing this itsy-bitsy skirt. Euphoria star Sydney Sweeny wore the Miu Miu
skirt to the MTV Movie and TV Awards and blessed us with beautiful photos of her look on
Instagram. She wears the pink low-rise Micro skirt with a side slit over her left leg and black belt
details, in combination with a see-through cropped button-down shirt. But her chunky SILVER
platform heels, also by Miu Miu, were the real star of this outfit. With the silver glitter details and
diamanté heels, these shoes shine brighter than every star.

An effortless but beautiful look by Anastasia Karanikolaou. She wears a ruched white micro skirt by
Meshki, with diamanté straps at the waist. The satin finish of the skirt gives her a sleek and elegant
look, perfect for celebrating her 25th birthday. With the diamanté cowl neck halter top, also by
Meshki, Anastasia shows off luscious skin and adds even more glamour. Her high and sleek ponytail
shows off the big silver hoop earrings. Because of her injury, Anastasia paired her outfit with white
sneakers and white tennis socks. A beautiful look that is easy to recreate for your next night out.

Glamour and glory – that is what Flo Millie’s look communicates. The singer wears a black micro skirt
in a subtle zebra print with a matching top with a knot in the front. Accessories are a thick pearl
choker, statement rings on both hands and black flip-flop heels. A simple look that catches
everyone’s gaze.

Influencer Kenza Boutrif is sporting a head-to-toe Diesel look, combining two magnificent trends:
denim and micro skirts. From the blue striped top with Diesel plaque to the yellowish micro skirt and
the baby blue wool coat – this fit is perfection and a dream for every fashion lover. She accessorised
this look with knee-high denim heels and a Louis Vuitton 2005 Neo Speedy in denim look. An
ensemble from heaven.

If minimalism is not your thing, this mini skirt outfit is perfect for you. Musician Deta Black combines
different styles and materials to create a unique and head-turning outfit that we wouldn’t have
thought about. She wears a cropped jumper with a brown mini skirt with the print “Miniskirt”.
Message received! White fishnet stockings, knee-high boots with eyelets and studs, white sunglasses
and a classic black Channel bag finish off this chaotic but stylish look.

All black with a pop of yellow! Another Mowalola outfit that meets the criteria for a hot girl summer
look. All we can see is Micro! The pleated leather micro skirt, with the yellow branded patch on the
left side, is low-waisted to meet our beloved y2k aesthetic. The skirt is so tiny that you can see the
black underwear straps and the model’s back. With the sleeveless button-down shirt, this outfit
almost gets a sophisticated look. Styled with the micro Mowalola Bundle Handbag in Yellow
perfectly adds to the micro aesthetic.

While the spring/ summer shows of Courreges dedicated to one colour per look, street style influencers like Olivia and Alice show us that playing with two tantalisingly bright shades of a colour can create playful and coordinated looks that will make your wardrobe pop!

Monochromatic dressing is perfect for those of you who want to add some spring colour to your wardrobe without having to say goodbye to coordinated outfits. Megan Thee Stallion

All-denim looks are another spring-ready take on the monochrome trend that can take your wardrobe to coordinated nirvana. Showing us how the double denim look is done, Megan Thee Stallion paired a lace-up corset and jeans by FashionNova for an accessible yet modish look that’s easily recreated. Also showing us that light layered denim is the current monochrome trend, Khloe Kardashian paired a denim dress with a denim trench for a nighttime take on the trend.

Olivia & Alice

As mentioned, if there is one Instagram page to seek out when looking for monochrome outfit inspiration, Olivia and Alice are just that. In this look, the sisters show us how to play with different shades of the same colour. Pairing light green trousers and dark green trenches, their looks spark an eloquent and fresh vibe, perfect for spring.

Sav Hudson

Spring has always been synonymous with fresh pastel hues, but in a twist on the trend, this season’s hottest designers like Blumarine sent monochromatic pastel outfits down the runway. Taking cues from the runway trend in her daily looks, influencer Sav Hudson’s pastel yellow look shows us how to layer light summer dresses and shades with puffers in the same hue – striking the perfect balance between the two seasons.

While the monochrome trend is usually found in bold nighttime looks, Lissy Roddy demonstrates that casual monochrome is also attainable. Kim has long been making her case for monochrome. Whether sporting hot pink Balenciaga or pieces from her own SKIMS line, Kim knows the importance of keeping colour to a stylish minimum. This month, Kim’s hot pink Instagram post was a how-to in all things vacay monochrome wear. The star paired hot pink pants with a bandeau top and gloves in the matching shade.

The fresh pastel look is a statement waiting to happen, whether it be from a matching crisp two-piece suite to an oversized t-shirt and some joggers; a splash of pastel can transform your ‘kitchen outfit’ to a whole new level. The palette itself is very appealing to the eye, it goes unnoticed as it lures you in. It’s one of those things that you either love it or you are drawn to it; there is no in-between!

It can be seen that the pastel trend is highly influenced by Harajuku fashion originated in Japan; as it is bold and visually attractive. Although it is commonly associated with layering and standing out from the crowd, the Harajuku influence of pastel hues have unlocked a trail for many fashion designers and brands, that have transformed garments to portray less is more through pastel.

It can be perceived that this co-ord broke boundaries and opened a trend for colour blocking with a streetwear infused twist. To top the fit, Nike had also created the Air Force 1 Shadow trainers in pastel that had generated a gateway for the sneaker community as well.

Initially, more and more designers have interpreted the pastel trend throughout the years, such as the angel brand Fiorucci. This has made the fast-fashion sector drawn to the idea of pastel, by making the viral dynamic more accessible to the fashion sector. These can be found on online retailers such as Pretty Little Thing. However, if you are looking for original pastel garments head over to eBay to find a more vintage look.

Its lively attraction has set a reoccurrence in the fashion industry throughout spring and summer; it will definitely be back again next year with no hesitation. Its unique palette has submerged and adapted across styles such as tie-dye and loungewear this season, we can only look forward to what is in store for us next!

Micro dusting popularly known as surface cutting is the cutting your split ends along the hair strand. We call it the non-hair cut as compared to a regular haircut micro dusting does not sacrifice as much length.

So how can you, micro dust or surface cut from the comfort of your own home. First, we advise that if there is even a small chance for you to go to the salon and have this done professionally do it. Second, if you are going to do it at home, we suggest asking someone else to help you as they have a better view of your head.

1). Grab your tools

The reason we recommend this method is because it does not need a lot of tools All you need is a paddle brush, fine-tooth comb sectioning clips and a pair of hair scissors

2). Brush your hair

Before you do anything, you need to ensure your hair is dry with very little product and brushed out using your paddle brush to get rid of any knots you may have.

3). Section your hair

After you have brushed out all your knots section your hair using the fine-tooth comb and comb through the sections.

4). Tuck and Micro dust

The final step is to grab a small portion of hair, comb it through using the fine-tooth comb and tuck it between your first three fingers. Bend it over your middle finger and cut the hairs that stick out. Do this along the strand of your hair in every section.

If you’ve recently found yourself struck by a desire to regularly swathe yourself in lashings of pearls, velvet and brocade, or with a healthy appreciation for puff sleeves, romantic necklines and jacquard ballgowns, then you’re not alone – Renaissance-era dressing is having a moment right now. Thanks to the preponderance of that giant-collared Ganni shirt, it’s safe to say that we’re experiencing a period of white-blouse mania, whereby fanciful iterations of Shakespearean-inspired blouses and lacy, ruffled confections are firmly entrenched in the season’s repertoire of must-have wardrobe items. The runways, too, in recent seasons have witnessed an inundation of 16th-century-inspired attire, with designers presenting collections in ode to all things Renaissance.

Brock SS20 and AW20

Sometimes when present happenings and goings on feel unsettling – say, amidst a period of political, social or environmental uncertainty – we, as a society, have a collective desire to look to the past as a way of resisting or escaping the realities of the present. Nowhere is this tendency more pervasive than in fashion, where trends and collections are defined by the decades or eras that they mirror, where designers use clothes as a means of transportation to carry us back to the past. Myriad designers have offered a reflection on this cultural zeitgeist of nostalgia, harking back to times past and decades, or centuries, gone by, serving up skirtfuls of whimsical escapism in a bid to ease the bitterness of the present. Not a season goes by without a sartorial reference to ‘90s grunge or ‘70s boho-chic, as nostalgia for not-so-distant decades spills out from celebrity throwback photos and vintage relics from previous generations’ wardrobes.

But there’s a certain joie de vivre that comes from celebrating a historical aesthetic that extends back far beyond any of our memories, one constructed of fragments of history – art, stories, fairytales, history books – intertwined with our own imagination, offering a distant escape from the quotidian. The exaggerated aesthetic of Renaissance-era dressing fits neatly into the criteria required for trends to take off in an age when fashion is constructed with the intention to orchestrate a social media moment – it offers a theatricality far removed from the stripped-back normcore and athleisure aesthetics that continue to dominate the fashion landscape, instead peppered with decadent jolts of appeal for sartorial maximalists. The simultaneous collective infatuation for cinematic period pieces seems too coincidental not to address – Greta Gerwig’s Little Women addresses the prairie-meets-Renaissance aesthetic with aplomb (thanks to Academy Award-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran). Autumn de Wilde’s Emma continues to fan the flames of the trend through its fantastical Regency-era costuming, bursting with bell-skirt ballgowns awash in pastel colourways, imbued with a playful frivolity equally found in Renaissance-era dressing.

Prada SS19

On the runways, many designers have also reached into the capacious bag of Renaissance-era style tricks. At Prada’s Spring/Summer 2019 show, models were sent down the runway in looks complete with opulent headwear worthy of a spot of cushioning Anne Boleyn’s head, ushering in a season of ubiquitous regal padded headbands. (A discussion of Renaissance style would not be complete without paying due respect to Anne Boleyn, the 16th-century’s biggest influencer and fashion’s latest muse – the iconic oil painting in the National Portrait Gallery in London has us musing over her pearl-lined neck, swathed in inky velvet and proudly holding a sky-high embellished veil on her head.)

Simone Rocha AW20 and SS20

Simone Rocha’s aesthetic has long been an ode to the eerie romance of Renaissance-era dressing – for her Spring/Summer 2020 collection, sheer leg-o’mutton sleeves belled out of china-print gowns and pearl-encrusted jewels appeared in copious quantities, grazing the collars of intricate tulle silhouettes or adorning jewel-studded headbands. Brock’s 2020 collections also offered visual feasts of romantic silhouettes that almost look like they were pulled from 16th-century oil paintings – billowing jacquard gowns adorned with intricate embroidery and Juliet sleeves, square-neck brocade dresses and floor-grazing florals rendered in tulle and lace.

Markarian AW20 and SS20

 NYC-based brand Markarian’s whimsical collections possess a certain romantic sensibility that translates into a cocktail of corsetry-inspired silhouettes, sumptuous brocades, and floral print silks, perfectly complemented by evening shawls or scarves that elevate the elegance of any ensemble.”

For his Autumn/Winter 2020 collection at Paco Rabanne, Julien Dossenna unveiled an homage to 16th-century Elizabethan-era style in the form of elaborate ruffle necks and Juliet sleeves, with billowing florals ballooning out from shoulder hems and lace-finished cuffs.

If the ubiquity of Renaissance-inspired looks on the runway isn’t enough to convince you to plunge into the trend, it’s also celebrity-approved, with A-listers from Bella Hadid to FKA Twigs exhibiting a predilection for all things celestial, spotted sporting Vivienne Westwood’s iconic vintage AW90 corset from her oil-painting-inspired Portrait collection. Besides, there’s never been a better time to escape back a few centuries and get dressed as if you were 16th-century royalty.

Unleash your inner home-hair-colourist with BLEACH LONDON’s ultimate guide to colouring your hair at home.

Hair-wise, there are two types of people in the world. Those who would only consider a colour change under the reassuring conditions and safety blanket of a Hair Salon’s roof. And the fearless, brave home hair dye-ers. Myself? Partially due to my impulsiveness, and partially due to my habit of always thinking I know best- I fall into the latter category.

Upon deciding one morning that there was no way I could possibly live another day with the hair colour I was born with and that I’d lived with for 14 years, by lunchtime, me and my best friend were stood in the home-hair-dye isle of Superdrug. And low and behold, by dinner time, I was sneaking around the back of my house. Drawstrings of my hood tied suffocatingly tight in an effort to conceal the patchy brown, white and weirdly luminous orange travesty that was hiding underneath- in a self-less effort not to give my mother a heart attack.

From this point to the present day has given me 9 years of home-dye expertise under my belt. Giving me the knowledge, that this hideous, mottled disaster was inevitable with the £3 ‘20 vol’ bleach kit my friend smothered over my head with no particular method.

With age, comes wisdom, and if I fancy a colour change now, I am a little less inclined to run to Superdrug, pick up the cheapest dye I see and get my friend to slap it on my scalp. Nevertheless, (clearly) I’m no stranger to my home salon- AKA the bathroom. If you try to look on the bright side of isolation, we currently don’t even have the worry of having to fix any disasters before having to go into the office.

There has literally never been a better time to experiment with your hair.

1. How would you recommend to dye your Pink / Blue/ pastel at home and avoid a disaster?

“To create pastel hair, your base needs to be bleached as light as possible or the colour won’t show. Use our Plex Bleach Kit to lift the hair to a very light, creamy yellow. You want to achieve a similar colour to the inside of a banana skin.

“Then, to neutralise any brassy or yellow tones, use our White Toner Kit to colour correct and create a blank canvas. If you apply pastel pink to a yellow-toned blonde, it will create a warm peachy colour, or if you dye your hair blue before toning the brassy tones out, it will create a green hue.

“Follow with your pastel colour of choice, and use our virtual consultation tool to figure out which colours and maintenance products you’ll need. For pastel pink use our Pinkcess Party Pack or for pastel peach use our Juicy Party Pack. Our Violet Femme Party Pack is great for a pastel lavender look or if you want a more subtle lilac, our Pearlescent-ville Party Pack creates a really soft, opalescent effect.”

2. Do you have any tips on how to highlight your hair at home?

“I’d suggest trying balayage at home rather than highlights as it’s not quite as fiddly. Balayage is less meticulous and uses a freehand painting technique which looks really natural and grows out beautifully without having to maintain your roots.

Use our Plex Bleach Kit to lift your hair to your desired level of blonde while minimising damage. You might need a friend to help out with the application, especially around the back of the hair, but if not set up two mirrors so you have full visibility. We have a balayage guide on YouTube here – the steps are as follows:

● Step 1 – Prepare dry hair by brushing and sectioning into thirds: one large section at the bottom of your hair from the top of the ears down to the nape of your neck, then two on top of the head, from the ears up and parted in the middle.

● Step 2 – Work through each third at a time, starting from the bottom. Use a tint brush to weave through the hair and create smaller, thin sections. Gently backcomb to secure the weave before applying the bleach. This prevents the bleach applying in a thick block and creating a chunky effect.

● Step 3 – Use a tint brush and your hands to ‘smoosh’ the bleach into the weaved section and softly smooth it up to meet where the backcombed hair sits.

● Step 4 – Place the bleached section into a piece of tin foil to separate from the hair you don’t want to lighten, folding the edges to secure.

● Step 5 – Continue with the same sectioning pattern until the back is complete.

● Step 6 – Carry on with the front sections, this time taking the bleach slightly higher up on the pieces around the face for a framing effect.

● Step 7 – Develop for up to 45 minutes, checking the progress every 10 minutes. Once it is ready, rinse thoroughly, shampoo, condition and towel dry.

● Step 8 – tone and colour as desired”

3. Any tips on shampoos to use to maintain the colour?

“You can prolong your colour using our Toning Shampoo and Conditioners for a 5 minute, in shower top-up. If you need to boost a vibrant colour, you can make your own colour toner by mixing your Super Cool Colour in with a conditioner and wearing the mixture like a mask for 5-10 minutes. Keeping the hair nourished also helps prolong colour, as healthy hair holds on to the pigment better than dry hair. Use a rich mask to keep the hair hydrated, my favourite is our sell-out Reincarnation Mask (£15) for an intensely moisturising treatment once a week.”

4. Are there any other products/ tools we need to dye our hair at home other than the box dye?

“If you purchase a Bleach Party Pack through chat.bleachlondon.com you’ll receive our reusable Eco-Conut Mixing bowl and brush. I’d also recommend having an old t-shirt or towel to hand to avoid staining your favourite clothes, and a shower cap to wear whilst the bleach or dye processes. If you don’t have a shower cap, cling film works perfectly too. If you’re creating a bleach bit or balayage and need to keep sections of hair separate from the bleach, you cause strips of kitchen foil.”
