Our generation’s attitude to fashion has been undoubtedly influenced by social media. People feel the need to invest in every micro-trend and, maybe even more alarmingly, people feel like they can only wear their outfits once. Not only does it allow you to express yourself through fashion but, as previously stated, it is a much more economic and sustainable option to buying something new every time. Another fashion-orientated benefit to renting is that it allows you to experiment without commitment. Is there a certain style that you’ve been wanting to try but don’t want to fully commit to? You can rent pieces and see how wearable you find them, test whether they work with your current wardrobe and make an ultimate decision afterwards. This allows you to really play with fashion in a way that buying items doesn’t. This way you can have some fun with different styles and trends without having to buy into them if you’re unsure. Similarly, if there is a certain item or style that you like but it doesn’t really fit in with the rest of your wardrobe, you can still give it a go without having to work it in with your pre-existing items.

The fashion industry is one of the main contributors to the climate crisis, in 2020 World Economic Forum reported that the “fashion industry produces 10% of all humanity’s carbon emissions and is the second-largest consumer of the world’s water supply.”

Similarly, The True Cost has shared that:

“The world now consumes about 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year. This is 400% more than the amount we consumed just two decades ago. As new clothing comes into our lives, we also discard it at a shocking pace. The average American now generates 82 pounds of textile waste each year. That adds up to more than 11 million tons of textile waste from the U.S. alone.” 

It goes without saying, then, that something has to change within the industry. One of the most beneficial things that we can do to limit the environmental impacts of the fashion industry is to consume less. Investing in long-lasting staple pieces for your wardrobe and renting the rest when you need it, is the perfect way to cut-down your consumption as well as giving a new lease of life to items that may not be worn to their full capacity otherwise. 

It’s Vintage Darling!

Finally, renting also offers access to some great vintage pieces. This means that you can track down and borrow some fantastic looks that you simply cannot buy anymore. In the same way we see celebrities and their stylists dipping into the archives, renting means that you can too.

The designers catching our eye at this year’s fashion week are Aeron Studio and (di)vision, as they have brought the highlights of the week so far and visionary looks.

Aeron Studio

Aeron Studio known for their contemporary knitwear, showcased in an empty warehouse as beautifully eerie music echoed through the space. A diverse cast of models were used in their show which we were hyped to see, as body inclusion and model diversity should not be treated as a trend.

We were impressed with the set of looks which spiralled out of the Aeron Studio collection on Tuesday. Their key takes on AW23 fashion included high necklines, oversized leather handbags and loose, slouchy fits. No surprise that the bulk of their collection was made up of their infamous knitwear styles, which not only is perfect for a Nordic AW but also one here in the UK. Leather appeared in the form of shirts, blazers and trousers which were styled together to create contemporary ensembles.

Neutral colours dominated their runway and conventional seasonal shades such as brown and auburn were prevalent. However, a bright tangerine fit made its way down the runway and was definitely one of the eye-catchers of the collection. Most looks featured multiple layers and were kept to a strict monochromatic palette, with the exception of a few patterned pieces popping up.

(di)vision

We know we can all relate to the next-day mess of a late rager being a dreaded thought. However, in (di)vision’s punk party show that is exactly what we got, and for some reason we were living for the atmosphere- maybe because we didn’t have to clean it up? The youthful brand set up their show in what can only be described as a party carcass. Guests were seated at wine-stained clothed tables where banquets of food were already half-eaten. Candles were almost burnt down to their wick ends and a sense of chaotic charm lingered in the air.

Imperfections and irregularities are fully celebrated in this collection which is an amazing breath of fresh air. The deadstock materials which made up the series of 32 looks meant the designer siblings behind the visions could not be perfectionists as odd quantities of stock were at their disposal. An incredible mirage of inexact creations is therefore the result of sustainable design tactics.

Key factors of their neo-grunge AW23 collection were low-waist lines, distressed patchwork denims and leather biker styles. Decade influences from the nineties and noughties were very evident- return of leg and arm warmers, accessorizing with belts and hoodies. Their signature grunge took a gorpcore twist with all looks (mostly slouchy fits) being styled with sneakers. The subculture’s favourite, plaid, prevailed in certain looks while hats-aviator, cap, beanie- and hoods made a strong appearance. Zips and rips took hold of trousers, skirts and jackets which works for the season as well as the brand. A dash of mustard stood out on the runway and the occasional sheer piece caught our eyes.

No wonder everyone is talking about this stunt. The destructive show closer was a captivating moment of genius from the brand. As the last model to walk the runway, Sarah Dahl, -also the partner of Simon Wick- sat at one of the many table wrecks she grabbed the attention of the room by tapping her spoon against her glass. Standing up, in traditional toasting manner, she waited until all eyes were fixed on her. In a dramatic fashion she strutted fiercely away from the table and it became clear the table cloth which covered her table, was in fact, her dress’ train. As food, drink and cutlery chaotically leapt on to the floor, spectators applauded in admiration.

A Roege Hove

A. Roege Hove is known for its extravagant yet effortless silhouettes as they seek to highlight the craftmanship and artistic process of clothes making in their designs. The AW23 show, however, took this one step further as the first model took to the runway without her outfit. We then had the pleasure of witnessing the delicate craftmanship that lies behind each look as we saw the designer’s trademark gauze knitwear take form in front of our eyes.

The collection featured the usual sheer looks that we associate with the designer, but this collection debuted her first works with wool. The chunkier knits offered a whole new texture to the collection, something that proved to be a key element within this show. The heavier knits were seen alongside feathers, ribbed details and open knits to create a multidimensional collection that strayed away from her usual looks whilst staying true to the theme of the brand.

Stine Goya

If there is one designer that you should keep your eye on it is Stine Goya. The women-led brand has been going from strength to strength as of late and their latest collection “Freeze” was a wintery dream. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s Snow Queen, the collection looked to celebrate the winter season. While a winter-inspired show might bring images of practical puffer jackets and ski-suits to mind, Stine Goya took these looks and added a fairy-tale twist.

A sea of silvers and blues took to the catwalk, channelling the colours that we associate most with the season. The icy tones were paired with furry accessories such as hats, coats and boots creating a Narnia-esque depiction of a magical winter. If this collection achieved one thing, it firmly solidified the trend of silver and metallics that are set to take over from the Valentino PP Pink domination.

While some of the looks channelled the regal aspects of the Snow Queen, the collection as a whole felt very inspired by ski culture. The fur miniskirts and leg warmers, metallic trousers and sheer dresses felt like the perfect for a ‘cool-girl takes Aprés ski’ look. The combination of ski-culture and the Hans Christian Andersen fairy-tale came together to create the perfect depiction of a snowy winter.

Rotate

This Copenhagen Fashion Week Rotate provided us with every party look we could ever need. The black vinyl catwalk was quickly brought to life by an array of sequins and sparkles and even a special appearance from the former Real Housewife Lisa Rinna.

Rotate is a brand that celebrates the outrageously extravagant and while this collection offered a more muted colour palette than usual, it was no exception. Apart from the occasional fuchsia, the colour palette leaned more on the neutral side, but in the form of leopard print and sparkles in order to stay true to the brand’s love of the over-the-top. However, the biggest surprise came at the end of the show where the final six looks were all black and completely monochromatic. This is not to say that the looks were without the usual Rotate extravagance though, the brand simply utilised textures and silhouettes to make up for the lack of colour.

Gestuz

Gestuz’ autumn/winter 2023 show was built around an unexpected muse. The ‘Black Widow’ was central to the collection as creative director Sanne Sehestedt explored the notions of masculinity and femininity through the sultry designs. The push and pull of the traditional gender norms of fashion worked towards the re-imagined notion of sexiness that Gestuz was exploring. The pairing of traditionally female aspects of fashion such as lace and sparkles with the structure of a blazer or dark leather worked against the usual assumptions tied to ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’ dress codes.

The binary oppositions did not stop there. The colour palette of the collection was predominantly dark, as one would expect from the ‘Black Widow’ theme, but it was not without a vibrant pop of colour. Denim was a predominant theme in the collection, alongside cream, yellow and brown, adding some lighter tones to contrast the dark. There was even a vibrant red dress in a look that felt absent of all darkness.

Overall, the collection appeared to celebrate femininity in all its forms, whether it be light or dark, ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’, the show featured it all. The autumn/winter collection was an appreciation of binaries and the spaces that can exist in-between them.

Sustainability-wise, swimwear can have a seriously detrimental effect on the environment. When it comes to our wardrobe, we all know that we need to shop more sustainably, but it’s especially crucial when it comes to swimwear. Why?, Swimsuits are made from synthetic materials such as nylon and polyurethane (a mix of Lycra, Spandex, or Elastane), whose production depletes natural resources.

These synthetic materials are all derived from petroleum oil which is problematic for several reasons. It produces environmental pollution during extraction and fibre production, harms natural resources and wildlands, and is non-biodegradable.

Another reason swimsuits tend to be less sustainable than other clothing is because synthetic material often doesn’t last long, losing its shape quickly – which leads to many replacements. Furthermore, swimwear is currently extremely difficult to recycle, resulting in polluted landfills and harmful microplastics released into the environment.

Taking care of our wardrobes is more critical than ever – and eco-conscious dressing shouldn’t be overlooked during the holidays. These days, there are numerous sustainable swimwear brands to discover, each offering stylish silhouettes and environmentally friendly production methods.

In a world where fast fashion is on the rise, we know we need to change how we shop. We can eschew fast fashion by renting or buying second-hand, where possible. If you are looking for something new for an upcoming holiday, consider shopping with brands that place sustainability first- after all, renting out swimwear is hardly realistic.

Made in Australia, Matteau supports Australian textile manufacturing however it can. Founders of the company Ilona Hamer and Peta Heinsen embrace all different body sizes and designed swimwear that would accommodate and empower all their customers. It’s no surprise that models and fashionistas, Jeanne Damas and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, are fans of the brand.

Fisch 

It is well worth checking out Fisch’s vibrantly coloured and printed Eighties-inspired poolside styles if you want to make a statement. Fisch is committed to “ocean upcycling”, transforming harmful ocean plastics into contemporary swimwear. Fisch is also a partner of Healthy Seas – a team of skilled divers that safely remove ghost nets from the ocean floor, which later make Fisch’s fabric. Each piece is crafted from econyl, and woven in a mill in Italy just two hours from their factory, minimising its carbon footprint, therefore reducing its environmental impact. Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a California-based swimwear and beachwear brand that believes style and sustainability go hand-in-hand. As one of the first brands to introduce eco swim fabrics in 2010 with EcoLuxTM- a piece of ultrafine matte jersey fabric and EcoRib, which is a stretchy ribbed fabric made from recycled nylon and plant fibres, Vitamin A is still staying ahead of the curve by combining feminine design with sustainable innovation two decades later. Peony 

The brand says its designs are “the first bloom of peony flowers”. 

Taking its name from the flowering plant that signals summer’s arrival, peony is the sustainable swimwear label encouraging us to live life fully. The brand combines classic shapes with soft colour palettes to create confident pieces, a reflection of Australian designer Becky Morton’s deep love of the ocean. 

Swimwear label Peony uses fabrics made from recycled polyester and specially developed linings in order to reduce waste to create sustainable pieces that are durable and strong. Participants in the discussion include sustainable lifestyle influencers Monika Poppy and Izzy Manuel, co-founder of Flock Together, Nadeem Perera, as well as co-founders of Earthrise Studios, Jack Harries, and Alice Aedy.

The purpose of Conference of the People is to give the younger generation an active role and say in making the decisions that will shape their futures and raise awareness of the current climate crisis. Experts have warned that a growing toll is taking on young people’s mental health due to the climate crisis. The emergence of ‘eco-anxiety’ – the chronic fear of environmental disaster – is likely to be underestimated and lead to long-term damage for many—conference of the People endeavors to ease the burden on this generation. 

Among the topics discussed during the event: are waste and product afterlife, using more eco-friendly materials, managing eco-anxiety, protecting eco-systems, and ways to collaborate between the industries in order to get results sooner.

A PUMA RE:SUEDE update is also planned to be presented, which addresses the company’s goal of making a biodegradable version of its most iconic Suede sneaker.

In a discussion of materials, the brand will examine how to use more sustainable sources of cotton, polyester, and other fabrics within their products to make a positive environmental impact, while in a discussion of biodiversity, it will be shown that new, innovative materials can contribute to the reduction of biodiversity threats.

Eco-anxiety has become a complex subject for many, especially young people, amidst the constant stream of adverse reports we have seen this year about the state of the environment. Together with Cara Delevingne, a panel will harness the negativity, influencing other brands to follow suit and take emergency action to tackle the harm from the climate crisis. As the panel’s final discussion will be on the ways in which the fashion industry can evolve in order to alleviate the current environment.

 The event started with an opening show by legendary Indian designer Manish Arora, in the Freemason’s Hall, Covent Garden.

The show celebrated fashion, futurism, and human diversity at its best, with incredible performances by vocalist and composer Bishi; ‘living sculpture’ Daniel Lismore; performance artists Is She Hungry, Charity Kase, Pandemonium, Michael Moon; and recording artist Virgin X.

Challenging the old ideals of beauty and fashion through a liberation of the senses, Arora explained that it wasn’t just one inspiration, but everything in his head after the show.  

Legendary show producer Motty Reif adds “The reason why I started this project was to challenge and transform the old notions of beauty. For me, fashion is people in the grandest sense, so I wanted to celebrate beauty in all shapes, ages, genders, colours, and religions. It feels like a liberation from the old ideals.”

The show began and ended with a speech by Daniel Lismore, after which the audience was taken on a further exploration of the senses – this time into the metaverse via Oculus VR headsets.

An after-show party continued into the evening, with a DJ set by Georgie Bee and cocktails provided by Ciroc.

KORNIT Fashion Week is The “alternative fashion week” that sets an example of progress. It is a global innovation leader in FashionTech developing the technologies that fuel the on-demand manufacturing revolution and providing the fashion industry with a roadmap towards sustainability.

But, their differences- as Ganni’s creative director Ditte Reffstrup argues- are what makes the collaboration such a ‘fun and fresh’ drop.

To demonstrate this ‘fun and fresh’ ethos, the Miami meets Copenhagen collection brought garments that see Juicy Couture’s traditional velour tracksuits drenched in the playful logos of each brand. The tracksuits feature in a choice of traditional Y2K hues like tan and electric blue that reminisce the looks of Paris Hilton in the early 2000s. The 13-piece collection also features crystal-clad caps and mesh dresses- perfect for staying chic and sustainable this spring.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Ganni drop if the Denmark- based brand didn’t stay faithful to its earth-loving spirit, equally, it would feel wrong to purchase a Juicy drop if it wasn’t a vision of noughties glitz. So, in a compromise of the two brand’s ethos, their pink slogan tee (featuring a giant Y2K love heart and ‘please recycle’ slogan) epitomises everything both labels stand for, creating the ultimate union between the two iconic brands.

Each piece in the collection is made from organic recycled cotton as a part of Ganni’s responsibility game plan. The plan set out to ensure the brand works toward inclusivity, sustainability, and diversity in everything they do. And, after securing collaborations with influential labels like Ahluwalia and now Juicy Couture, it’s inspiring to see Ganni is encouraging the rest of the fashion industry to take on their ethical memo.

So, say goodbye to the days of relying purely on second-hand outlets for your sustainable Y2K fulfilment, this unlikely collaboration means it is now possible to buy brand new noughties pieces that won’t cost the earth!

Over 55 labels showcased collections across the four-day digital event; some of which will be available to purchase as NFTs (unique digital assets). While the digital event is innovative and exciting, we know what you’re thinking, what good are garments if I can’t wear them? And while we’ve all pondered the usefulness of digital fashion, this event gave us the ultimate opportunity to express our inner fashionista. From social stigmas to the issue of overdressing, the physical world is full of reasons we can’t wear what we want everyday, but in the digital world, what’s to stop our avatars wearing a flashy two piece on a random Wednesday? Decentraland’s creative director Sam Hamilton said people “dress much more outrageous in the metaverse” – going to show there’s no such thing as overdressing in Decentraland.

The designers showcased at the digital fashion week ranged from world renowned names like, Elie Saab to, emerging designers like The Imitation of Christ. These labels engaged in inspiring panel talks, gallery showings, and even after parties- talk about an authentic experience! Tommy Hilfiger is among the brands with the biggest involvement in the digital event, featuring a digital showcase 3D replicas of Hilfiger’s signature silhouettes, the label said they’re “inspired by the power of technology and are looking forwards to exploring new consumer channels”, going to show this event is as new and raw for the designers as for us.

And, for the shopaholics among us, online shopping takes on a whole new meaning at the event, as Selfridges launches its first ever metaverse department store in collaboration with Paco Rabanne. The department store has been majorly involved in the fashion industry’s digital development after launching physical NFTs in their stores this year; the chain store is dedicated to promoting the benefits of making fashion digital. Even if shopping and styling aren’t your thing, the films and panel talks featuring the likes of Chanel and Lanvin at the CashLabs Space mean there’s something to entertain everyone at the digital event.

The fashion week is like no other in terms of accessibility- opening up the fashion industry to anyone who wants to be involved- attending the event is as simple as joining the metaverse as a guest. Not to mention the lack of waste produced by the digital fashion week. The average fashion week generates up to 48,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and as the digital fashion week generates 100% less waste, it could be the solution to the industry’s most pressing issue.

The benefits of the digital event are endless, it could be the biggest leap towards reducing the exclusivity and unsustainability of the fashion industry. Decentraland’s Fashion Week was a once in a life time experience; the future of fashion.

‘One size fits all’ isn’t a term you’ll hear thrown around much in the fashion industry, but in a bid to move away from high fashion’s size 6 or nothing memo, Ester Manas designs clothes that will stretch to fit anybody. The Belgian designer was inspired by her own experience trying to find clothes that looked good and fit well, tired of the lifeless brown and beige garments available for plus-size women, Ester set out to design clothes that say ‘we exist too!’

Manas’ goal was beyond achieved at her recent FW22 show, where ruched materials in an explosion of hyper-vivid colours were worn by diverse and inspiring women who brought a fresh perspective on who high fashion is ‘for’. From Paloma Elsesser to Ariish Wol, the label dedicates itself to providing opportunities for women the fashion industry have ignored in the past. Aside from those on the runway, industry experts like Amina Muaddi and Ajshe Berishaj have recently been spotted in Manas’ sexy knits and colourful dresses, giving the label the recognition and credibility it deserves.

But, self-empowerment isn’t the only ethos Ester Manas has dedicated itself to, taking on another pressing issue in the fashion industry, the label is devoted to making sustainability a priority. By using deadstock materials to produce their stunning designs and creating them just 20 minutes away from their warehouse, the label is perfect for dressing fiercely, yet, responsibly this summer.

A highlight of their available products is the label’s heart-shaped clutch. While inclusive and sustainable, no label is complete without an ‘it bag’ to match, and Manas’ blush pink purse might just be the bag we fall for this season.
