While the spring/ summer shows of Courreges dedicated to one colour per look, street style influencers like Olivia and Alice show us that playing with two tantalisingly bright shades of a colour can create playful and coordinated looks that will make your wardrobe pop!

Monochromatic dressing is perfect for those of you who want to add some spring colour to your wardrobe without having to say goodbye to coordinated outfits. If your aim is to piece together an outfit that is perfectly coordinated (like Courrage’s and Valentino’s recent runway moments) aim to shop for all of your pieces from the same retailer so that you can guarantee the shades will be identical. Or if Olivia and Alice are your bright dressing fashion heroes, combine pastels and brights together in the same look. Zendaya

Hot pink is having a moment and as the new face of Valentino, it only made sense that Zendaya headed to the Italian Fashion House’s show in layered flamingo pink. Dedicating entirely to the bright pink shade, the star wore a lengthy pink trench coat with knee-high boots and accessories in the courageous shades.

Megan Thee Stallion

All-denim looks are another spring-ready take on the monochrome trend that can take your wardrobe to coordinated nirvana. Showing us how the double denim look is done, Megan Thee Stallion paired a lace-up corset and jeans by FashionNova for an accessible yet modish look that’s easily recreated. Sticking to the light blue look, Megan accessorised with a pastel blue Chanel purse.

Khloe Kardashian

Also showing us that light layered denim is the current monochrome trend, Khloe Kardashian paired a denim dress with a denim trench for a nighttime take on the trend.

Olivia & Alice

As mentioned, if there is one Instagram page to seek out when looking for monochrome outfit inspiration, Olivia and Alice are just that. In this look, the sisters show us how to play with different shades of the same colour. Pairing light green trousers and dark green trenches, their looks spark an eloquent and fresh vibe, perfect for spring.

Sav Hudson

Spring has always been synonymous with fresh pastel hues, but in a twist on the trend, this season’s hottest designers like Blumarine sent monochromatic pastel outfits down the runway. Taking cues from the runway trend in her daily looks, influencer Sav Hudson’s pastel yellow look shows us how to layer light summer dresses and shades with puffers in the same hue – striking the perfect balance between the two seasons.

Lissy Roddy

While the monochrome trend is usually found in bold nighttime looks, Lissy Roddy demonstrates that casual monochrome is also attainable. Pairing a regal blue gym set with a chunky biker jacket, this look shows that whether you’re hitting the gym or chilling at home, nothing is stopping you from getting your monochrome fix every day of the week.

Winnie Harlow

Metallic monochrome makes the ultimate ‘going-out’ look, as shown by Winnie Harlow’s Vegas post last week. Wearing a metallic orange cut-out top and skirt by Revissaint, this look is for those daring to stand out from the crowd.

Kim Kardashian

Kim has long been making her case for monochrome. Whether sporting hot pink Balenciaga or pieces from her own SKIMS line, Kim knows the importance of keeping colour to a stylish minimum. This month, Kim’s hot pink Instagram post was a how-to in all things vacay monochrome wear. The star paired hot pink pants with a bandeau top and gloves in the matching shade.

Fresh from the SS22 runways, here are Voir’s favourite accessory trends to recreate this spring.

Bicep Bracelets

This spring sees the revival of bicep bracelets. On the runways of Fendi to Blumarine, model’s arms were adorned with sturdy bands of gold and silver. Popular in the early 2000s, the bands were worn on the arms of Y2K icons like Nicole Kidman.

Recently the accessory has become popular in the celebrity sphere with pop culture icons like Dua Lipa posing for Instagram in the nostalgic accessory piece.

The trend comes right on time for lighter spring dressing; it can be styled with arm revealing crop tops, and makes the perfect beach accessory to complement your spring vacay bikini.

Oversized

This spring, dainty is out. Bold earrings, necklaces, and anklets dominated the runways of AZ Factory and Moschino. The trend featured monochromatic chunky necklace looks and multicoloured earring ensembles.

The label that won this trend was Schiaparelli. The French Fashion House’s recent Haute Couture show featured heavy, space shuttle-shaped earrings and chunky gold neckwear.

Designers style this trend with minimal evening wear like a little black dress; allowing your accessories to do the talking.

Gloves

A leather essential for the mild spring chill; SS22 runways saw long opera gloves traded for tiny leather gloves in pastel shades. Moschino chose to style this trend by coordinating their pastel peach and mint glove shades with the model’s purses.

In a more classic twist on the trend, Valentino’s ‘Anatomy of Couture’ show used black gloves to complement black stockings; a stylish and inventive twist on the old money look.

Hand-held Handbags

You’ve heard of a handbag, but this season hand-held bags are the trend taking the runways by storm. Reminiscent of the nostalgic Y2K clutch, models on the runway of Versace were seen holding their neon green bags by hand.

Inventively, cherry-shaped bags by Undercover even incorporated finger holes for a comfortable, but stylish, clutch.

Rhinestone Boots

While traditionally crafted with leather, this spring designers have added a touch of glamour to the cowboy boot. Vivienne Westwood’s recent show presented dazzling sage and silver boots drenched in rhinestones. The brand styled the innovative trend with knee-length skirts and dresses.

Corset Belts

Last season, the popularity of Netflix’s period drama Bridgerton re-introduced renaissance inspired corsets into our daily fits’. This spring, designers like Aliai are bringing an air of modernity to the trend by cultivating corsets in contemporary hues of cherry red and cropping the corset down to below the breast.

The runway isn’t the only place the accessory trend took off, with influencers like Amina Muaddi showcasing the oversized belt to her followers while attending Alaia’s Parisian Haute Couture show. 

Belly Chains

The iconic Y2K accessory stomach chains make a return this spring. On the runways of Moschino and Chanel, belly chains pulled together the brand’s iconic skirt suits and 90s attire.

While Chanel’s Creative Director, Virginie Viard, kept to traditional dainty chains, Moschino reinvented the accessory using pastel pink plastic to wrap around the waist of models like Gigi Hadid.

The co-ord had a big moment on the runway for Spring-Summer as iterations of the easy to wear duo were pictured dancing down the catwalk. What once was restricted to a simple top and skirt pairing has now been reimagined in a range of fabrics from jersey to linen, silk to leather. With the addition of shorts and trouser combinations too, there really is a co ord for everyone.

Subtle Chic

While colours had their moment on the catwalk, neutral toned shades took over the SS22 runway in relaxed shapes and loose silhouettes. The looks might have been low-key but they were certainly not boring with the addition of some key stylish details, think asymmetric cuts and overloaded embellishments. Understated but chic as ever, these are the ready to wear staples you need in your wardrobe come spring.

Mesh, Cut-Outs & Baring It All

We’ve seen cut-outs before but this time they were accompanied by lace, ties, mesh and more. Conjuring up the ultimate illusion of sexy, plunging necklines, exposed midriffs and sheer fabrics complimented the styles we saw storm the catwalk.

Noughties Nostalgia

Skimpy silhouettes, long-slung waist lines, and a dose of double denim were just some of the Y2K-inspired styles that designers sent down the catwalk for their Spring-Summer debuts. Love it or hate it the 2000s style revival is not going anywhere in 2022.

From The Beach To The City

We might have just celebrated Christmas but that doesn’t mean we can’t think ahead to the styles of the summer and that is exactly what the designers of the moment are doing right now. We’re talking super short minis, bikini tops and platformed sandals. It’s the vacay-ready style that can be plucked straight from your suitcase and worn wherever, whenever.

Jean Paul Gaultier

“A celebration of Gaultier” is how the collection’s designer Glenn Martens chose to describe the wonders of pinstripes, zebra prints, and gothic bridal looks that graced Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway last night. The collection featured unyielding 3D illusion- style black and white gowns which were said to be inspired by the “pure diva goddess” garments Jean Paul Gaultier created in the 1980s.

As the show continued the gowns became more reminiscent of 16th Century gowns fit for a queen. Dresses in royal colours of moss green and purple with enormous ruched skirts were a highlight of the collection. Front row guests of the show like musician Bilal Hassani said they were “in awe of the amazing collection” (and so are we).

Franck Sorbier

Sorbier’s video showcase began in the dusky setting of an old Parisian backstreet. A male voice mused in French as the scene dissolved to a series of blue textures and hues, inspired by the movement of the ocean.

In a dream-like scene, dancer Adele Borde stood in an ethereal gown, made of feathers, as graphics of water and flowers washed over her. The dress emulates the zestful hues of the sunset as feathers in burnt orange and lemon swung from the dancer’s petite frame.

Furthering the fairytale collection, Sorbier showcased a lime green dress, which evoked memories of magical Tinkerbelle costumes worn by children playing dress-up. The show’s playful spirit was emphasised by the doll-like movement the dancer exhibited. Sorbier’s show ended with a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt: “The future belongs to those who believe in their dreams.” It is safe to say Sorbier’s fantastical collection will be in our dreams tonight.

Zuhair Murad

Walking the plank or walking the runway? Zuhair Murad’s pirate-inspired collection ensures you’ll look breathtaking either way. Model’s on the Lebanese designer’s runway sported pirate-style hats and colourful jewels embellished into garments, reminiscent of those found in a pirate’s treasure chest.

When speaking of his inspiration behind the collection, the designer said that pirates represent bravery and confidence, something he believes people need after the turbulence of the past two years.

Valentino

Pier Paolo Piccioli’s ‘Anatomy of Couture’ Collection dissects couture and what it means for our bodies to be in rhythm with the garments we dress them in. The Italian Fashion House showcased floral ball gowns and sheer sequined shirts replicating that of a knight’s armour. Piccioli played with a vast array of materials from velvet to snakeskin to cultivate a collection celebrating the beauty of differences.

In his bid to rewrite the meaning of couture, Piccioli dressed models of all ethnicities, body types, ages, and genders. The collection demonstrates clothing’s ability to perfectly mould to anyone’s body regardless of shape or background.

Guests of the show had to stick to an all-black dress scheme to allow Valentino’s colourful garments to stand out among the crowd. But this wasn’t an issue for bloggers attending the show like Lena Mahfouf who said black was her confident colour anyway

Viktor & Rolf

There wasn’t a shoulder insight at Viktor&Rolf’s Spring Couture show. Each model’s upper body was enveloped in gothic-chic garments inspired by old Dracula films. With shoulder pads that towered over the body, the collection stayed faithful to the brand’s ethos of taking an ‘unconventional approach to fashion.’ The eerie garments matched the model’s burgundy lips and talon length nails.

Guests who attended the show like Fashion Expert Zadrian Smith deemed it ‘intense, otherworldly drama’ and we can’t think of a better way to describe a collection straight from a Tim Burton movie.

Elie Saab

Saab took the bridal chic look to the next level with his princess-inspired Spring Couture Collection. The collection was an ode to the Mediterranean, so gowns in peach and arctic blue were made to represent the colours of the ocean. Some dresses were submerged in glitter, others featured hundreds of pieces of folded material, creating the enchanting illusion that butterflies had flocked to nestle on model’s skirts.

As the show drew to a close, the lighting dimmed to an intimate amber hue and a show-stopping dress emerged from the curtains. Those on the front row, like Micheal Coste, dashed to snap a picture of the final look: a glorious mermaid-style gown, complete with intricate lace detail, a long veil, and a train that followed the model around the runway.

Rahul Mishra

Indian designer Mishra’s ‘The Enchanted’ collection lives up to its name. The video show was an alluring vision of fantasy from start to finish. Set in an enchanted forest, models Gunjan and Laxmi wore garments bursting with colour and floral patterns. Butterflies rested on the ruched material of the pixie-inspired garments. When talking about the show, Mishra described his collection as a ‘work of fantasy’, distorting the lines between reality and dreams.

]]> Designers from Schiaparelli to Azzaro kicked off Haute Couture Week yesterday. Each designer’s collection reimagined evening wear in a mystifying and futuristic fashion. Ball gowns were soaked in sequins and traditional accessory shapes were replaced with golden heads and spaceships. The designers set the stage for an eccentric and exciting week of fashion to come.

Schiaparelli

A chapel-style setting complete with flaunting figures of angels dancing along the ceiling was the perfect precursor to Schiaparelli’s surrealist Spring 2022 Couture Collection. Sticking to the outlandish style that Schiaparelli has been praised for since its establishment in the 1930s, Daniel Rosebury- the designer of the collection- said he looked to galaxies far away for inspiration, even deeming the collection ‘Planet Schiaparelli’. The gold metal heads for handbags and the futuristic spaceship-style earrings were reminiscent of recent Sci-Fi cinema, such as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.

While the entire show was equally exuberant and eccentric, there was one medusa-style attire that had everyone talking. The outfit looked as though it came straight from a Sci-Fi movie, as it created the illusion that the model was growing luxurious gold tree branches, encrusted in colourful gemstones, from her body.

The futuristic allure of the show wasn’t exclusive to the runway, however. As the show’s front row guest, Kanye West, understood Schiaparelli’s memo of mystery as he hid behind an all-black mask hiding his face entirely.

Dior

Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s current creative director, made the beauty of human creation and connection the message behind her Haute Couture SS22 collection. The hand-embroidered sequined tights, waistcoats and gowns worn by models from Chloe Oh to Rachel Marx were made to represent the teamwork behind the carefully detailed garments.

Dior’s eveningwear collection saw glamorous black ball gowns perfect for a modern princess. But, not only was Dior’s collection fit for royalty, it was witnessed by royalty, as Lady Amelia Windsor and Beatrice Borromeo sat along the front row of Dior’s Haute Couture show beside fashion royalty Cara Delevinge.

Chiuri’s ode to human creation and togetherness didn’t stop at her garments. The models who walked the show were illuminated by the colourful artwork surrounding them in the show’s setting of a reinvented gallery, showcasing works by Madhvi and Manu Parekh. Demonstrating the amazement of human ability and creation in all of its forms.

Azzaro

Opening Azzaro’s live stream show, both male and female models such as America Gonzalez and Jules Baco emerged from a curious outdoor setting where trees were replaced with white bollards and a paved runway slithered between uncut grass.

The mysterious setting complimented designer Olivier Theysken’s mystifying collection, which saw evening wear like suits and gowns reimagined in liquid silver silk and dripping in sequins. The designer admitted his love for all things shiny and his Haute Couture SS22 show was the epitome of this love.

Ulyana Sergeenko

It may be the 2020s, but the 1920s have made a return in Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko’s Spring 2022 Couture Collection. With flapper dresses dazzling in sequined art-deco and feather embellishments. The collection was copied and pasted from Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby.

The digital show setting saw models illuminated by a single spotlight against a cherry red catwalk, as the show began with a model blowing a whistle to signify the show’s commencement. Sergeenko ensured a fun and playful start to the year with models peering behind the curtain showcasing sequined headpieces, encapsulating the playful energy of the 1920s.

Acne Studios Celebrates Adolescence

We don’t always appreciate the actions our younger selves took. Without these actions, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Acne Studios SS22 Campaign ‘The Face Collection’ is all about looking back on the moment that made us define who we are. The campaign is modelled on various teenagers, allowing them to style themselves whilst celebrating individualism and expression.

Daily Paper Champions Hip Hop

Blu Marine Deliver Y2K Sass

Blu Marine have hopped right on board, with their SS22 collection bursting with butterflies, pink and all things flirty and full of Y2K sass.

It is always an exciting moment when the face of a new campaign is a movie star, and they do not get much bigger than Tom Holland. Having recently taken the lead in one of the most successful films of the past year, Tom is the perfect person to face SS22. And, if that wasn’t enough, Euphoria fans can also get their teeth stuck into Prada’s SS22 campaign as Hunter Schafer is a part of it!

Pastels, natural hair colours, cute outfits and accessories to match: this ad campaign from Moschino is a dream to look at, and is so well suited to all things spring. We had a feeling that natural hair colours were going to continue to grow in popularity throughout 2022 and seeing Gigi Hadid rocking this gorgeous brown shade gave us all the confirmation we needed.

Dior Continue To Grab Makeup Lovers’ Attention

Dior is celebrating Spring with their latest collection. Brought to us by Peter Philips (Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup), the collection draws inspiration from the power of minerals with shimmering pastel and opalescent hues. And, the cherry on the cake is that the entire 2022 spring collection can be tried on virtually.

]]> Since the tragic news of Virgil’s passing broke on Sunday, tributes have flooded social media, acting as a testament to the incredible man Abloh was. Just over 48 hours into mourning one of the industry’s greatest visionary’s, Louis Vuitton showcased Abloh’s final collection in an exquisite and emotional Miami-bound show. 

The show had a magical touch from its opening, as Virgil’s voice was heard speaking on the subject of adults having the ability to return to “childhood wonderment” when allowing their imagination to be set free. This speech was matched with a hot air balloon ascending into the air, perhaps as a symbol of Virgil’s high achievements and the positive mark he left on the world. 

At the forefront of the show was the impeccable designs Abloh created, a vocation he dedicated his life to perfecting and delivering. Many designs were the creations we previously saw in June at LV’s Paris Fashion show, however, this didn’t take away from the star-quality and individualism of the designs, that only Virgil could have pulled off.

Back in June, Virgil spoke about his collection saying;

“I’ve started to let my imagination run wild. I try to create the world as I would like to see it in real life. Having something that’s pop culture and fashion, that’s an education and maybe opens minds. To me, that’s the North Star.”

The show had a huge turnout, with friends and supporters amongst the crowd such as Pharrel Williams, Rihanna, ASAP Rocky, Kim Kardashian and Virgil’s lifelong friend and collaborator Kanye West. 

Louis Vuitton’s CEO Michael Burke was also in attendance, delivering a poignant heartfelt speech moments before the models took to the runway. 

“The deeply moving show we are about to see is born out of an idea Virgil and I first discussed three years ago. It is based around the traditional coming of age narrative, but of course, being Virgil, he spun and recontextualized the concept for the 21st century, and in doing so expressed his own unique talents and vision. This idea of coming of age was important to Virgil because inspiring and empowering younger generations defined who he was. He used the platform he had to break boundaries, to open doors, to shed light on his creative passions, art, design, music, and of course, fashion, so that everybody could see inside—not only to dream of being part of that world, but to also find ways to make that dream a reality.”

Speaking in June, Abloh said that he wanted “to keep diversity at the forefront of how I think about what fashion is today.” There is no doubting the fact that he achieved this goal, with his final showcase offering styles that represented and expressed different cultures and walks of life. Virgil’s legacy cannot be erased, having touched so many of us with his remarkable talent, and in turn, empowering a generation to make their dreams a reality.

Layering

Layering is a trend which is effortless but gives a sophisticated look and is one that was repeatedly seen over PFW. This style gives you the opportunity to create various outfits with different items in your wardrobe, whether it’s Isabel Marant’s feminine take with a bikini top layered underneath a utility jumpsuit or Rocha’s edgy approach with a shirt underneath a leather dress.

All About The Colour

Paris’ runway was an oasis of colour this year and has inspired us to brighten up our own wardrobes. With colourful leather being a prominent trend as well as Dior’s disco-ready collection encouraging us to take a retro step and incorporate colour blocking into our outfits. Shades of blue also owned the catwalk as it was seen through various shows including Courreges and Rokh.

Abstract Prints

No fashion week is complete without abstract prints and funky patterns dancing down the runway. It’s a feature which brings an outfit to life and guarantees you will be turning heads. Distinct designers including Dries Van Noten and Chloe did not disappoint in showcasing extravagant prints that will definitely be brought into the next season with us, as after over a year in lockdown we will not be holding back! 

 Cut outs

The cut-out trend is one we were happy to see return to the runway after being loved the past season. From delicately slashed necklines to the extreme cut-out waist on trousers, we saw it all this fashion week! It is a simple detail but transforms an outfit completely from basic to edgy.

Trench Coat

The trench coat is a staple piece which is guaranteed to be worn if in your wardrobe. Across PFW this coat has appeared in a range of styles inspiring different looks, from the classic Burberry camel to vibrant baby pinks. It acts as the perfect layering piece in the Springtime when the summer heat remains in hiding and a jacket is still needed.

Mesh/Sheer fabrics

Nothing screams spring/summer more than mesh fabrics exposing some skin. It can be dressed up or down and even layered for those chilly evenings. PFW saw an abundance of brands take on this trend and put their own twist on it, whether it was brightly coloured mesh or Dipetsa with their signature wet-look sheer fabric.

Metallic

This year the stage was infused with the metallic trend of the 2000s as brands such as Lanvin and Rochas glistened downed the runway creating their own spotlight. Metallic fabrics are set to be the perfect going-out attire for the SS22 season and will be sure to dazzle on the dance floor. 

Tailored Sequins

Givenchy set the tone this PFW with their statement tailored sequin looks. This party-ready look is one which will never go out of fashion as it creates the ultimate glamorous and feminine look, one we can’t wait to wear. 

Catsuits

As worn by Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala, the catsuit trend has taken the runway by storm this year. It’s a skin-tight, flattering attire and takes us back to 80s streetstyle. Brands such as Marine Serre went for a head to toe covered look with a psychedelic print whereas others such as Stella McCartney went for a more revealing, stylish look with a plunge neckline and cut out waist.

]]> Stunning shows have already been presented from Christian Dior, Marine Serre, Saint Laurent, Balmain, Rick Owens, and Raf Simons, and during the latter half of the week further designers, like Loewe, Balenciaga, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, Chanel and Louis Vuitton – not to mention, the anti-fashion world of Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Comme des Garcons, and Maison Margiela – also took centre stage in Paris. Here is the rundown of what you might have missed from the eventful weekend of Paris Fashion Week!

Loewe

What is wearable? How do we wear garments? And how do clothes cover the body? These questions and more were prompted by Jonathon Anderson at Loewe’s Paris show in the equestrian arena of La Garde Républicaine. The show opened with a series of long bodycon dresses altered with sharp points and edges breaking out from the natural body silhouette. Hard edges and boxy forms pulled the tight, knit fabrics into unnatural and unexpected shapes. Sculptural, metal pieces and structured, detached shoulder pads separated aspects of clothing to become garments and accessories in their own right – prompting us to consider how our clothes are constructed and how can we wear each element as individual pieces? Denim jackets and trench coats were presented as back-to-front dresses, collars became strapless tops whilst sleeves opened into capes, adding movement to stiff jean fabrics. Anderson proved his ability to balance in this collection by presenting an array of possibilities that we can look forward to wearing in Spring.

Issey Miyake

Titled ‘A Voyage in Descent’, swimming and diving were vocal themes at Issey Miyake’s Spring show. The campaign video took place in what appeared to be the bottom of an empty pool. With the show lacking physical water, the movement of the ocean was replicated instead through the garments. Miyake’s signature, numerous pleats allowed the pieces to naturally sway with the model’s walk. The clothes also became part of the performance as intricate pleated dresses and skirts were constructed out of large circles, folding together to lay neatly on the ground, then picked up by the models as if unfurling paper lanterns. Easy colours of pale yellows blended with harsher grey, blue and purple tones to create gentle contrasts in the fabric of dresses. Comfort and asymmetry were further staples of Miyake’s clothes embodied in the show, with high neck dresses relaxing into loose midi skirts and black and white office wear adopting a casual look through cut-outs. Moving from neutrals, a series of dresses in large, floral patterns embodied summer. The collection included classic silhouettes expected from Miyake, returning to practicality through comfortable formal wear and athleisure in the form of biker shorts and tennis skirts.

Nina Ricci

Also travelling to the sea for inspiration was Nina Ricci. Bringing together the beauty and serenity of mermaids with realities of environmental concern, the creative directors, Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh, gathered unusual fabric for this collection. Chunky netting was used for layering over trousers or wrapping around the head, whereas scuba material was reconsidered as chic coats. The different components of scuba diving, like head coverage, bodysuits, and heavy material each contributed to the collection individually. Sheer and heavy fabrics were layered together, with reveals to pops of colour created through cut-outs to mimic gaps in literal fishnets. The collection brought together a romanticised vision of the ocean through bold blues and greens, with reality through harsh materials and trapping, nets and zips covering the face.Also travelling to the sea for inspiration was Nina Ricci. Yohji Yamamoto

Yohji Yamamoto’s continual refusal to acknowledge the current trend cycle proves his role as one of the few anti-fashion designers remaining. Presenting a Spring/Summer collection of almost all-black looks makes a powerful statement. Opening with a series of long, black dresses of deconstructed pieces, drapery and thoughtful tailoring is recognisable Yamamoto. More constructed tailoring appears in black trench coats with an altered silhouette, creating an extra cinched waist and broader shoulders. Accents were added to the predominantly black looks through punk aesthetics, like silver chains and mismatched white, lace and leather fabrics. Three successive ballgown looks closed the runway, constructed to reveal the boning structure underneath the layered fabric.

Alexandre Vauthier

A refined collection of tailored suits and jackets, flowing jumpsuits and colourful fur were presented by Alexandre Vauthier for PFW. The variety of materials and patterns added excitement to the collection, with an endless possibility of silhouettes explored. A pinstriped, boxy suit was a statement look that contrasted the silky evening gowns and jumpsuits, often paired with matching boots in the same shiny fabric. Overall, the looks were directed by their fabric, producing a variety of garments all suitable for the transitional time of Spring.

Vivienne Westwood

Opening with New Romantic-style sleeves, loose drapery and unexpected silhouettes, Andreas Kronthaler is continuing the legacy at Vivienne Westwood. Detailed tailoring took the form of a structured latex cape-jacket merging into a baby pink, cut-out skirt. The collection moved between formal garments like oversized, suit jackets with ruffled sleeves to draped dresses, naturally covering the body. Loud patterns and bright colours also appeared throughout, with red mini dresses and deep shades of blue being repeated. Reconsidering the punk we associate with Vivienne Westwood is no easy task, but Kronthaler’s ability to remake red, black latex and fishnets into 80s style cocktail dresses proves he is continually reinspiring the house.

Balenciaga

The collaboration we did not realise we needed was between Balenciaga and The Simpsons for their Spring collection. Marge closed the runway in a glorious gold gown, with Anna Wintour, of course, sitting front row. The physical fashion show itself expanded on what we normally expect, with red carpet attendees, editors and celebrities, becoming part of the runway. The predominant all-black looks were signature Demna, merging oversized, fine tailoring with the baggy silhouette of streetwear. Typically full-coverage was in fashion with head-to-toe skintight bodysuits and layers upon layers with oversized jackets being featured throughout the show. Demna at Balenciaga never disappoints – this show is another example of his power to reinvent what we expect of fashion whilst constantly creating chic pieces.

Lanvin

Bruno Sialelli revisited art deco for Lanvin’s Spring show. Most striking was the dreamy colour palette of rich purple, lilac, deep greens, and navy – not our first thought of Spring, but this was a refreshing new take on Easter pastels. You can be reassured, however, that florals for Spring were still present – this time made bold and abstract, printed to resemble pop art. The collection featured interesting silhouettes from delicately pleated babydoll dresses, to a matching set of a ruffled, bubble skirt with a bralette, and several structured, oversized blazers and trenchcoats which strayed away from minimalism. Bold, bright, and fun, this collection brought Spring liveliness to the refined 1920s art deco aesthetic.

Ludovic de Saint Sernin

The flourishing label, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, continued his sultry aesthetic for PFW. His references to desire and sexuality are explored comfortably, making lingerie wearable for the everyday. Mini dresses were stringed together with exposed threads and openings, appearing in the same manner that tights run to expose threads and make the fabric sheerer. Cropped camis also appeared in the same manner, constructed in lines to produce less coverage, rather than from one piece of fabric. Sheer matching sets and bodycon cover-ups also played into the contrast between coverage and exposure often seen at Ludovic de Saint Sernin.

Schiaparelli

Daniel Roseberry looked back to his predecessor Elsa Schiaparelli and her relationship with the Surrealists for this collection. The opening look of an incredibly wide cropped blazer with high waisted, tailored trousers immediately began to play with our perception. Umbrella hats, realistic ear motifs, and a bag with a cartoonish, sculpted face reflected the questions of reality and activated the subconscious which the Surrealists championed – Roseberry created unexpected human features and objects where we least expect them. We are also sure Freud (popular among the Surrealists) would certainly have something to say about the twisted, silk fabric which created a bra of rose-like flowers, along with a denim version of Madonna’s iconic cone bra. As wonderful and weird as the collection was, the chic tailoring and formal aesthetic of Schiaparelli was highlighted in gold detailing and classic suit silhouettes.

Maison Margiela

Historical and mysterious describes John Galliano’s Spring collection for Maison Margiela. The co-ed looks initially feel historical, inspired by the New Romantics – a significant reference point for John Galliano. Flamboyant, period-style references were included through elaborate hats, lace frills protruding from the shoulder of jackets, and layering of loose and androgynous garments.  Rainboots exaggerated in size, with matching rain hats certainly suggests Spring showers was thought of for this collection, rather than the typical blooming and bright Summer we expect. By travelling through different settings in the campaign video, the collection constantly feels like it is reminiscing over the past, refashioning traditional outerwear and luxury fabrics into the fashion of today.

Chanel

Chanel’s Spring show at PFW saw a return to the beloved 1990s aesthetic created under Karl Lagerfeld’s creative direction. Opening with swimsuits and bikinis, the dominant black and white colour palette accessorised with gold instantly recalled the rich, ornate designs of the late 1980s and 1990s. The tweed suit also was updated – constructed in a glittering, black fabric with gold trims and an elastic, cinched waist to bring hints of nightlife to a formal skirt suit. Striped pinafores, loose shift dresses, and colourful, flowing evening gowns were some of the other garments presented in both classic and updated forms, through alternative fabrics like leather used and hems shortened to become mini skirts or shorts.

Louis Vuitton

Drama and eccentricity was present at Nicolas Ghesquière’s Spring show for Louis Vuitton. A extravagant setting with elaborate chandeliers decorating the catwalk was the perfect place for a collection bringing together historic silhouettes, layered beadwork, and (surprisingly) jeans. Whilst aesthetically feeling slightly like the Mad Hatter’s tea party, Ghesquière was able to unite various period style costumes with common everyday items, like leather trenchcoats, to a create casual, wearable outfits.

]]> Summer styles and statement designs aplenty, September rolls to an end and we have been blessed with yet another impressive fashion week, this time taking place in the capital of Fashion, Paris. Heralding a fresh new summer with sizzling new visions and truckloads of fashion drama from Maria Chiurri’s enthusiastic colour displays for Dior to Rick Ownes’ aggressive mastery, here is a run-down of the shows which have stunned us this week. 

Victor Weinsanto

Victor Weinsanto has been a rising star during PFW, and he did not disappoint with his refreshingly authentic show. The folklore of Alsace (where he grew up) offered design inspiration for his SS22 collection as he pulled out all the stops by even asking his grandmother to sing in Alsacian dialect for the soundtrack to the show. Weinsanto also brought drama to the runway with vivid colours which brightened up the darkroom, including a distinct fuchsia. Dramatic collared capes also framed the models, keeping to the theatrical theme featuring a geometric purple cape paired with a matching dress and sheer leggings. 

Marine Serre

Marine Serre’s SS22 collection was an ode to environmentally focused living as it was Serre’s most sustainable collection yet due to it being composed of 45% recycled and 45% regenerated materials. She gave her digital film the title OSTAL 24, (meaning house in Occitan historical language spoken in Serre’s native region) as Serre wanted to create a sense of comfort within her collection. This 13-minute film featured lab coats fashioned from embroidered tablecloths and tea towels as well as catsuits and joggers in psychedelic prints. Serre’s signature styles also popped up including overdyed patchwork jeans. Within the film, the models went about their daily lives; including cooking and mediating to prove you don’t need a glamorous runway to appreciate fashion. 

Christian Dior

Christian Dior brought colour to PFW this year with their SS/22 collection. The venue underwent a 60s nightclub inspired makeover with multi-coloured flooring and a live band playing Italian disco music. The ’60s influence did not stop there though, it was evident within the collection as the runway was flooded with colour blocking A-line dresses and miniskirts alongside trapeze coats. Glittering evening looks also took to the stage following the nightclub ambience as well as mesh fabrics and extravagant bows.  

Ottolinger 

Ottolinger’s SS22 show, which took place on the Left Bank, was all about cutouts and showing off some skin. The line-up of models featured a range of body types which is not seen often across these fashion weeks as diversity was celebrated as feeling sexy and revealing skin should be enjoyed by all. Cut out necklines were spotted as well as the same detailing on trousers that wound their way down the models’ legs. Cycling short coordinates were also a staple of the show appearing in a vivid orange or a more basic white. The look that stole the show was the twisted denim outfit which included asymmetric waisted jeans and a one-sleeved jacket creating a unique look for SS/22.

Saint Laurent

Saint Laurent stormed the runway right where Paris shines the brightest as the Eiffel Tower lit up the surroundings and was the spotlight to the stage. The glistening landmark was not the only breathtaking part as the collection did not disappoint. Saint Laurent brought the glamour back to their home turf after a year and a half of being locked away. Fitted suits and blazer dresses with padded shoulder detailing made a sophisticated statement as well as elegant maxi dresses featuring the one-shoulder look and cut out detailing. Colourful accessories were also paired with these outfits, including an electric blue which was seen repeatedly. Flattering catsuits were also rocked by the models as they were seen in a floral print and a vibrant purple. 

Didu

Didu’s presentation at PFW featured cowboy accents and a range of silhouettes as Du designs her clothing around the idea that skin is a textile too and can be used in an outfit. This included deconstructed clothing such as a cut-out waist on trousers as well as the splicing detail seen on a range of tops. Backless garments were also a theme of the show as this detailing elevated the clothing to give it a classy but sexy look. Wrap over necklines were also a complimenting touch to the line, featured in a range of eye-catching colours including a fiery red and an unmissable purple. 

Rochas

Charles de Vilmorin’s Rochas collection set light to the runway as the first wave of the show featured a dark and fiery palette that seemed inspired by burning flames. There were a range of short and maxi plisse dresses featuring dark oranges and deep reds with ruffled layered details. As well as knee high boots and platform shoes which snaked their way up the leg like a burning flame. Next up in the collection was a more monochrome based theme inspired by De Vilmorin’s drawings, including puffed out skirts and flowy dresses. Lastly, there was a theme of deconstruction as materials draped around the models and cold shoulder dresses and tops hugged the models. 

Dries Van Noten

Dries Van Noten’s SS22 collection stuck to the digital format and took a euphoric festival-inspired approach with an uplifting colour palette. The collection got us even more excited to be able to groove again next summer, especially after this fashion inspiration from them. A range of textures was used, including jacquards, silk and fake furs as lockdown prevented us from dressing in extravagant and lavish clothing so Dries Van Noten used this opportunity to go all out. This also included lively fringing dresses in colours of turquoise and orange. Depths of glimmer danced its way into the collection as well with bejewelled denim jackets and sparkling tops. 

Di Petsa

Di Petsa made a splash during this PFW as their custom wet look flooded the SS22 collection. Sheer white dresses embellished with silver jewels rippled down the models as well as low waisted midi skirts paired with a cropped top creating a glowing goddess look. Draped midi dresses were also a key part of the collection appearing in an ocean blue and a satin white featuring a feminine low back.

Acne Studios

Acne Studios SS22 show took place in a rustic setting of a loft as exposed brick and large mirrors surrounded the runway which was covered in a plush black fabric. These surroundings complimented the rich neutral colours of the collection as cream and brown leather appeared on dresses and shorts, as well as the contrasting stitch on trousers as two tones were played around with. Juxtaposing was also a key theme as punk like leather was paired with feminine chiffon shirts and delicate corset tops. Sheer shirts took to the stage as well, paired with buckled skirts delivering a fierce look. 

Balmain 

Balmain served us with an unforgettable show as Olivier Rousteing took glitz and glam to a whole other level. Rousteing was celebrating 10 years as lead designer, and he showed off his talents through a collection full of neutral and gold tones. Heavily embellished jackets dazzled the audience as well as gold chain detailed garments and cut-out, figure-hugging maxi dresses. An audio tribute by the pop queen herself, Beyonce also praised the designer and referred to Balmain as an ‘amazing tool for beauty and change’. The show ended spectacularly as Olivier showcased his most iconic designs which included a dress modelled by Naomi Campbell, who was wearing a sparkling, figure complimenting maxi number that made it a night to remember. 

Rick Owens

The ‘Prince of Darkness’ Rick Owens made a smoking appearance at PFW as his models entered the Palais de Tokyo through clouds of fog showcasing his dark yet loud SS/22 collection. Owens brought black back as the show featured a range of dark outfits including layered looks with leather jackets and black mesh garments. It was a representation of his signature aggressive aesthetic as large black platform boots also paraded down the runway. Orange coloured mesh also found its way into the collection amongst the black, layered over a cut out one piece.

Chloe

Chloe’s SS/22 show took place in a picturesque location by the River Seine, which complemented the natural beauty of the collection. Models strutted down the riverbank with elegance as angelic white dresses flew in the wind and suit co-ords made a smart statement. A muted mustard yellow was also seen on the garments to add a splash of colour to the collection, including midi skirt coordinates and floor-length trench coats. Colour was also seen on crochet detailed dresses which were embellished with shell-shaped accessories giving a beach-like vibe. 

Lecavalier 

This fashion week’s calendar marks Marie-Eve Lecavalier’s first Paris appearance with her SS22 collection. All garments featured a range of textures and patterns creating a delicate look whilst also remaining complex. Layering with shirts was also a trend seen with mesh vests and wide crochet knit stitch dresses. A handful of colours were used as Lecavalier stuck to a specific colour palette of neutrals alongside blues and reds. 

Isabel Marant

Thursday ended beautifully with Isabel Marant’s show as she continued with the beach vibes and transformed her staple feminine designs with a bikini silhouette perfect for SS22. The show was filled with energy as abstract patterns and bright colours worked hand in hand to create outfits that screamed summer. The upbeat music spoke for the lively attires which included emerald green floral co-ords and bikini tops layered over lemon yellow tops. Mini dresses and oversized jackets also appeared in shades of orange and yellow.
