Manifest (Netflix)

If you are into suspenseful, sci-fi TV series this one is for you! Manifest is a mix of Lost and 4400.Montego Flight 828 to New York disappears off the radar without a trace, only to reappear five years later without explanation. For the 191 passengers on board, no time has passed. But for their loved ones, those five years were a trying time…

When they land, the passengers and crew learn from the NSA that more than five and a half years have passed, during which time they were presumed dead. As they reintegrate into society, the passengers begin to realise that their lives – and their loved ones – are not the same as before. They also begin to experience guiding voices and hallucinations.

Ms Marvel (Disney +)

This new Disney show freshly out from Marvel Studios follows the life of a young teenager living in Jersey City,  Kamala Khan. An avid video game fan and insatiable fan fiction writer, she loves superheroes, who fire her imagination (especially Captain Marvel). But she struggles to fit in at home and at school until she discovers she has superpowers similar to those of her heroes. Disney and Marvel tap into diversity and inclusivity as it is the first show with a Muslim-female lead as a superhero. 

The Terminal List ( Prime)

Prime Video kicks off the month with The Terminal List on July 1. In this action thriller, Christ Pratt will portray James Reece, a Navy SEAL who returns home after his team is ambushed on a covert mission only to discover that the threat might still persist. Based on the Jack Carr novel of the same name, Reece (Pratt) and his platoon are ambushed while on a mission, but upon his return home, he isn’t quite sure about the way he remembers the events and whether he actually hadanything to do with them or not. As he struggles to regain the right memories, Reece realizes that there are people working against him, and he must do whatever it takes to protect both himself and his family.

Anything’s Possible (Prime)

Here comes a fresh, relevant queer love story. The first Billy Porter-directed film Anything’s Possible premieres on July 22 is a coming-of-age tale about a high school boy crushing on his trans classmate. The film follows the humorous, delicate, and passionate love story between cisgender boy Khal and transgender girl Kelsa. Unfortunately, obstacles stand in their way, as Kelsa’s friend also vies for Khal and not everyone at their school is accepting of the queer relationship. These trials don’t stop Kelsa from chasing after what she wants–Khal, love, and happiness. Anything’s Possible will be released for streaming on Amazon Prime Video on July 22, 2022.

Our favourite period drama returns this month, and we’re expecting all the opulent 19th century charm we saw in season one with a slightly renovated (but equally diverse and youthful) cast. Featuring Simone Ashley and Jonathan Bailey, this season is set to follow Anthony Bridgerton on his quest to marry debutante Edwina Sharma, but he has to get through her critical sister first!

The drama-fuelled and addictive series’ second chapter will hit Netflix on Friday, so keep your pearls and corsets at the ready.

Mood

In one of the most socially relevant shows of our time, the multi- talented Nicole Lecky wrote and stars in Mood, a show that speaks to a generation of social media fanatics. Mood follows protagonist Sasha, a rap star with dreams of becoming famous, who sets out on a mission to make it big on social media.

Dealing with relevant themes from the dangers of social media to hustle culture, the BBC 3 show is an important and relevant watch this spring.

Brand New Cherry Flavour

Having recently blown up on Tiktok for its racy scenes, this LA-based series isn’t for the faint
hearted. The Netflix eight- part series sees a female director seek sweet revenge from a TVproducer who wronged her.

Based on Todd Grimson’s 1996 novel, the gory series is a blast of freakish horror with a 90s cinematic aesthetic. While it was first released in August last year, the series has been trending on platforms like Tiktok and Twitter recently due to its sexual scenes that had viewers joking they had to wash their eyes after watching.

Fans of futuristic feel goods listen up, Amazon Prime’s Upload is the comedy you can’t miss this spring. Having just released season two, Greg Daniel’s Upload is a mesh of our
favourite dystopian comedies from Black Mirror to Afterlife. The show follows protagonist Nathan who is able to decide how his afterife will go. Robbie Amell and Andy Allo play exciting and lively characters in a love triangle trope.

From romance to sci-fi- this series is binge worthy no matter your preferred genre.

Pieces of her

Based on Karin Slaughter’s New York Times best seller, this series isn’t in Netflix’s UK top ten for no reason. The thrilling mystery follows 30- year-old Andy, who thought she knew everything there was to know about her relatively ordinary mother, until one day changed everything. Andy witnesses her mother violently dispose of a shooter, opening up the questions about her true identity. Inevitably, you’ll become emotionally involved in finding out who Andy’s elusive mother really is, keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Russian Doll

Ever feel like you’re living the same day over and over? Well, Natasha Lyonne’s Russian
Doll character, Nadia, is! Russian Doll captures Nadia living the same day over and over as
she uncovers the meaning behind her groundhog day. Capturing New York life in a comedic
style, the series (first released in 2019) is back on our radar as a second season is
confirmed for April and unlike the show’s protagonist, we can’t wait to do it all over again.

There is nothing better than a true, strong friendship between women. A bond that can’t be broken. The kind of sisterhood that’s foundations are built on empowering one another, laughing until you cry and crying until you laugh. These kinds of best-friendships are usually made at high school, in the workplace or maybe even at your weekly yoga class. Not typically over a shared experience of having the same imposter ex. So, when we found the Instas’ of ‘The Tinder Swindler’s’ victims and saw that they – Cecilie Fjellhøy and Pernilla Sjoholm – had formed a bond worth more than his fake billions could buy, we felt like screaming ‘GIRL POWER’ at the top of our lungs.

And whilst, we at Voir, are living for this friendship formed through their shared tinder trauma, our hearts break for these women as the emotional and finical damage they’ve been left with will last a lifetime. With catfishing, poor communication and the sending of unsolicited nude pics at play, online dating is a hard enough ballgame as it is, without the fear of more Simon Levievs on the loose.

The Tinder Swindler hit our screens last week and has already reached over 45 million hours of views. The true crime documentary, directed by Felicity Morris, presented the story of professional con artist Shimon Hayut and the lengths he went to, with his crew, to make his millions. The film begins with victim Cecilie Fjellhøy narrating her personal account of matching Hayut on Tinder, where he went by the name of Simon Leviev, the son of a billionaire ‘king of diamonds.’

His profile was plastered with pictures indicating he lived an extremely luxurious lifestyle, drinking champagne on yachts, boujee restaurants and flying all over the world in style. Cecilie then walked us through her and Leviev’s whirlwind of a romance, which included a private jet ride to Bulgaria on the first date. What became immediately apparent was his use of love bombing and emotional manipulation from the get-go, luring Cecilie into the trap of falling in love with him.

Pernilla Sjoholm (who was an ex turned close friend of Leviev’s) fell victim to the same trick, as he spoiled her with lavish dinners and holidays, before forming a deep connection with her. Long-term girlfriend Ayleen Charlotte who was in a serious relationship with Leviev for over a year, also fell for Leviev’s trap, before realising he was an imposter.

After months of emotional manipulation, he would have his women exactly where he wanted them, and the fraudster’s cunning plan would take its darkest turn, as he convinced his victims to take loans out, ‘lending’ him obscene amounts of money, because his ‘enemies’ were after him. Overall, it is estimated he has swindled a staggering ten million dollars from all of his victims over the years.

Cat-fishing at a catastrophic level

Cecilie, Pernilla and the many others Leviev conned, had fallen victim to a serious case of catfishing. We’ve all been there. You’re waiting at the bar, and your ‘6ft2’ tinder match turns up to the date looking a little more like 5ft8, and a lot less built than in the pictures he had used from 2016, at the peak of his ‘Gym-King’ and protein powder phase.

Think of it like that, but times a million (or ten). Now if Leviev’s tinder profile had read, ‘fraudster, criminal, not really a billionaire and perpetrator of emotional abuse’, one would like to think he would have had zero matches.

Women world-wide live in constant fear of being sexually assaulted or hurt by men, which in turn can make the thought of online dating very daunting. Whilst meeting up with a stranger can be scary, sometimes when you’re lonely and single online dating becomes essential within your quest for love.

Prior to watching The Tinder Swindler, the usual precautions would be taken; meeting up in a public place, informing friends of locations and keeping them on speed-dial in-case an escape plan was needed. But, the documentary has brought another issue in the world of online dating to light. Simon Leviev wasn’t at all who he said he was, and he went to extreme lengths to keep his act up. With a team of ‘professional’ businessmen around him, photoshopped pictures and his ‘baby-mama’ going along with his story, it’s no surprise the women who had fallen in love with him, did not bat an eyelid.

The use of dating apps has become so normalised in our society, and whilst they have helped many to be successful in their search for love, they should be used with caution. The trauma that Cecilie, Penilla, and many other victims will carry forever, is a reminder for us to take precaution when swiping right.

Blame should be placed where blame is due

Un-surprisingly the show has taken social media by storm, as viewers are left stunned by The Tinder Swindler. But since the show aired, a victim-blaming narrative has been circulating the internet, as the women are judged for falling at the hands of the master manipulator.

Speaking to the ‘Private Parts Podcast’ on the criticism she has received, victim Cecilie says,

“It is so easy with hindsight, when you weren’t in the situation. When you’re under threats and stress it’s very different to when you’re just sitting here and saying like I would never have done that.”

It happens a lot more than you might think. Romantic fraud, where someone is scammed out of money by someone they believed they were in a relationship with, is alarmingly common, as according to the UK’s Action Fraud, in 2020 £68 million was lost due to romantic scamming. Instead of victim-blaming, championing them for coming together as a collective of strong badass women seeking their revenge, was the intended response for the show.

Director Felicity Morris tells ‘The Private Parts Podcast’, “I wanted to make a film that gave these women the platform and validation to say what they needed to say’, as she explains that she wanted viewers to feel ‘huge amounts of empathy’ for Simon’s victims.”

If The Tinder Swindler has taught us anything, it is that women and their friendships are unstoppable, and that it is time we all took some investigative measures when matching our suitable bachelors, to ensure all the con-men of the online dating world take their last swipe today.

To recap- the show follows Emily (played by Lily Collins), a determined American in her 20s navigating her way through her new life in Paris, as she attempts to bring an American point of view to ‘Savoir’, a French marketing firm. Of course, life isn’t always so simple, and Emily struggles with adjusting to French culture, friendships and love. 

Season one ended with Emily spending a night of lust and passion with her neighbour Garbiel, leaving us all in suspense about how Emily would handle this infatuation. The trailer of season two starts by letting us in on how she feels, with Emily describing her night with Gabriel as “the most incredible night of sex that I have ever had in my entire life”.

However, as the trailer proceeds, we see life isn’t all roses for Emily. She goes on to exclaim “I used to be so decisive, but since I moved to Paris, my life has been chaotic, dramatic and complicated”. We see that Emily is struggling between caring about others feelings and making decisions that will benefit her. 

It becomes apparent that Emily’s close friend, Mindy, is there for her at every twist and turn of her Paris journey. In the trailer, it comes across that this friendship is what inspires Emily to follow her heart, pushing her to make the right decisions. 

The trailer closes with Sylvie (Emily’s boss) prompting her to make the most of her time in Paris, saying; 

“You have the rest of your life to be as dull as you wish. But, while you’re here, fall in love. Make mistakes. If you’re gonna do Paris for one year, for god’s sake, do it right!”

We are so excited to see if Emily follows Sylvie’s advice, and will eagerly await the show’s release on the 22nd of December exclusively on Netflix.

Elite 4

The fourth season of the Spanish teenage drama has just come out this past Friday, June 18. If you’ve seen the previous 3 seasons you will not want to miss this fourth one, and if you haven’t, don’t worry, this new season can be enjoyed even out of context.

We won’t spoil away too much, but the drama, mystery, and tragedies at Las Encinas continue, but with new students and storylines. Some of our favourite old characters might have left, moving on with their students’ lives elsewhere, but brand new protagonists have joined the cast and we’re not mad about it. From singer Pol Granch to Instagram sensation Manu Rios, the cast has diversified and brought an additional element to the plot.

Although many are complaining about the news season just being centred around promiscuity and good looks, but we believe it’s up to you to judge… Have a look at Elite season 4 and let us know what you think.

Outer Banks

The trailer for one of the most awaited series for 2021 has finally been released… Yes, we’re talking about Outer Banks. The Netflix show that revolves around the life of the so-called Pogues, will be back on July 30. The trailer tells us that story will continue with more adventure than before, the hunt for freedom, money, and love will hasn’t ended yet.

According to the creators and executive producers of the show, Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke, we can expect this new season to “test” the protagonists to a new extent, live we’ve never seen before. We don’t know much about the new plot, but what is evident is that John B and Sarah will not give up on their story, even if this time it might take place in the Bahamas. All we can do now is wait and hope to see where their story will take us.

Sweet Tooth

A new show to add to your list. The new Netflix series, released at the begging of June, is a fantasy story based on the DC comic series written by Jeff Lemire. The 8 episodes show produced by Jim Mickle, Beth Schwartz, Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell and Linda Moran, tells the story of the aftermath of the “great collapse”, it takes us into a chaotic world where half-men half-animal creatures are believed to be the root of all problems.

This is the case of Gus ( Christian Convery), a half deer and half child, that after living ten years in the woods becomes friends with Jepperd ( Nonso Anozie) and the two set out on an adventure through what remains of the country in search of answers on their origins, past, and their real home. But as expected, it won’t be an easy journey… They will encounter enemies, unpredictable news, and will have to face the challenges present in the real world.

On-screen and in life, it’s rare to see a woman do whatever she wants. Male characters have long had the privilege of speaking their mind without the leaden burden of having to be “liked”, while women are often crushed under its weight. That’s one reason why The Duchess is so refreshing: Katherine Ryan, who plays a semi-autobiographical version of herself, does and says what she pleases without batting a (glamorous, perfectly curled) eyelash.

Ryan plays a single mother whose quest to have another baby leads her from a fertility clinic back to her estranged ex Shep (Rory Keenan), a former boyband member who lives “off the grid” on a houseboat, plugging plums as the new superfood and playing chess against himself. He’s a delinquent but loving figure in their daughter Olive’s life, and Katherine’s nemesis throughout the series as well as her co-parent.

Katherine’s character blends many qualities of Ryan’s stand-up persona: her filthy jokes, aggressive sexuality and brutal take-downs are oddly complemented by her sugary, hyper-feminine style. The outfits deserve special mention, not least because they somehow make her character a lot more palatable. The acidity of her personality clashes with her general aesthetic: hot pink trouser suits, glittery headbands, silk pyjamas with feather cuffs. Such princessy elegance seems important in a wider sense too – when was the last time you saw a single mum onscreen who had such an unapologetic, glamorous, self-confident style?

The show definitely has its missteps. In general, the insults are hilariously foul-mouthed; in one scene, Katherine’s daughter Olive gets into trouble for laying into her classmates with the fervor of Malcolm Tucker: “unless you’re a thong, quit riding my arsecrack”. But at times, the dynamics seem misjudged, like when Katherine rails against a social worker for (very reasonably) refusing to recommend her as an adoptive parent. Full of self-righteous outrage and bile, Katherine hurls insults at the woman (“f**k you in the face”), who stands on the doorstep in silent shock. It’s made more uncomfortable by the fact that the social worker is Black – if the scene was intended as an ironic comment on the self-serving superiority of the white middle classes, it doesn’t quite come across that way.

Netflix- First Look- The Duchess

As the show progresses through its six half-hour episodes, Katherine’s selfish disregard for others becomes a little grating. Her only loyalties are to her best friend Bev (Michelle de Swarte) and to her daughter – everyone else, including her kind and long-suffering boyfriend (Steen Raskopoulos), is fair game to be emotionally chewed up and spat out. As the plot develops, it gets harder to stomach the wreckage she leaves in her wake.

The most interesting parts of the series are where Ryan seems to be on a mission of her own – for example, to normalise discussions about cosmetic surgery. In one episode, Bev goes for a routine liposuction that takes an unexpected turn. This was surely a deliberate choice on Ryan’s part, who has been vocal about her own cosmetic surgery (she has had fillers in her lips, jawline, and chin, as well as breast augmentations). In an interview with the Evening Standard in 2018, she spoke about the importance of talking about cosmetic surgery to avoid amateur, sub-standard treatment: “If we spoke about it more, we’d go to the right people”. Here, she seems to be opening up the conversation.

Much of The Duchess is out to shock – the opening scene shows Katherine walking her daughter to school wearing a jumper with “World’s Smallest Pussy” emblazoned across the front. In one sense, a world where women – especially single mothers – can speak their minds, care less about the approval of others, and wear whatever outrageous outfits they want is hugely appealing. But a little more empathy would go a long way; confidence doesn’t have to come with cruelty. Words by Jaleh Brazell

Dolly Parton’s most popular songs are set to come alive through unique characters and storylines on November 22nd in a new Netflix series entitled ‘Heartstrings.’ With their enthralling narratives and themes, Parton’s songs indeed appear ideal for an anthology series. Each episode will tell a stand-alone story based on a hit; from a return to the 1970s with the infamous ‘Jolene’ to a western-like story in ‘These Old Bones’.

Judging from the trailer, we can also expect appearances by Parton in her typical flamboyant style. Indeed, to this day, the country singer continues to turn heads with bold, daring outfits that burst with colours and sparkles. While a distinctive sense of fashion makes up a significant part of Parton’s image, her uniqueness lies nonetheless in the inspiring elements of her ballads.

With her career kickstarting in the late 1960s, Dolly Parton made a name for herself at a time where country music was heavily dominated by men, and is now a worldwide country legend. Not only that, but back she wrote the music and lyrics for ‘9 to 5: The Musical’ which is currently in theatres and follows a female office worker getting revenge on her disrespectful, sexist boss. Parton is therefore widely regarded as an advocate of female empowerment, yet the singer, rather controversially, does not consider herself as a feminist. While this may initially sound surprising, she has explained the reasons behind her unpopular opinion on feminism: she views the word ‘feminist’ as meaning “I hate all men.” Perhaps this is quite an unfair generalisation of the movement, however Parton is not wrong regarding the existence of such man-haters—individuals that unfortunately harm the feminist movement and instead spread what is referred to as ‘white feminism’.

The world’s admiration for the singer is not only due the inspiration she represents for women, but also for her openness regarding personal yet universal issues such as depression. Looking at the beginning of her career; Parton’s music indeed used to tell tragic stories of unrequited love, loneliness, domestic violence—which she now jokingly refers to as ‘sad-ass songs’. There is something beyond impressive behind Parton’s music evolving from rather bleak themes to happier, more uplifting lyrics: she overcame her struggles. Spanning the rough period of Parton’s career from the old ‘Down From Dover’ to the 2014 hit ‘If I Had Wings’, the show will hopefully capture this inspiring sense of growth.

From feminist singer to fashion icon, it seems then that Dolly Parton gets labelled with titles that she has little regard for, something which is highly characteristic of her as a down-to-earth musician: music is all that matters to her. She possesses an incredible ability to mirror the emotions of her lyrics with her heavenly yet firm voice, and these emotions will now be rendered through fictional characters and stories.
