The annual Met Gala is a staple in the fashion world, with its iconic themes, extravagant red carpet looks, and star-studded guest list. As we look forward to the 2025 edition of this glamorous event, here’s a sneak peek into what you can expect.

When and Where?

The 2025 Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 5, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The event traditionally kicks off the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition, and this year will be no exception.

What’s the Theme?

In 2025, the Met Gala will explore the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” 

Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition will highlight the evolution and influence of Black men’s style, from the 18th century to the present day. Expect to see a stunning array of garments, photography, and art, showcasing how Black dandyism has left a lasting imprint on the fashion world.

Who’s Hosting?

 This year’s co-chairs are an impressive all-Black male lineup, including actor Colman Domingo, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, and music icon Pharrell Williams, alongside Vogue’s Anna Wintour and honorary chair LeBron James. Each of these figures has made significant contributions to fashion, making them fitting choices for this year’s celebration.

What’s the Dress Code?

While the dress code for 2025 has yet to be revealed, we can anticipate sophisticated looks that celebrate Black sartorial elegance, likely featuring sharp tailoring and bold, statement-making attire.

Why the Met Gala Matters

Aside from being one of the most anticipated fashion events, the Met Gala is also a major fundraiser for the Costume Institute. Year after year, it helps raise millions to support the museum’s efforts in preserving fashion history.

]]> The 2024 Met Gala beauty looks for the enchanting “Garden of Time” theme, inspired by J.G Ballard’s short story from 1962, didn’t disappoint and we thought we would break down some of the stunning faces that stole the show for us.

Zendaya’s Villain Arc

Zendaya’s look, or looks, definitely didn’t disappoint for her first year as co-chair of the Gala. She definitely sits up in our top 5 after she shook the world of Met Gala fans on May 6th when she walked the carpet twice. She sported two stunningly striking looks, Margiela by John Galliano for her first and never worn before archive Givenchy from 1996 for her second and both looks were styled by styled by the jaw-droppingly talented Law Roach.

She accompanied these looks with two corresponding beauty looks, the first channelling dark, fairy-tale villain energy. She combined shades of pink and purple and exuded incredible dark feminine energy. The second look was far softer, and more romantic peachy toned glam extenuating her bleached, skinny brows.

Emma Chamberlain’s Earthy Glam

On the red carpet, Chamberlain also embraced dark feminine energy with matte, sombre brown makeup that completed her earthy grunge look and matches perfectly alongside her 2003 floor length Jean Paul Gautier gown.

Gigi Hadid Channels Marilyn

Gigi channelled beauty icon Marilyn Mondoe, with her bouncy brown out bob and statement red lip. She did so in a full face of Maybelline as the current face of their brand.

Tyla’s Water Droplet Nails

Tyla came for the throats of the Met Gala veterans at her very first Met Gala ever – and definitely secured future invites back. She stunned in a custom sand sculpture dress by Olivier Rousteig for Balmain. She fully dove into the time aspect of the “Garden of Time” theme by pairing her sandy hourglass figure with an actual hourglass as a “handbag”. 

However the part of the look that completely stole the show for us was her water droplet illusion nails, making an homage to her chart topping debut song “Water”.

Doja Cat’s Chrome Tears

Doja Cat was perfectly on theme, dressed as a teary-eyed sculpture that you’d find in an enchanted garden. She wore simply a wet oversized t-shirt, which accentuated her curves much like that of a sculpture.

FKA Twigs Dripping In Diamonds

For this years Met, twigs instead opted for a custom Stella McCartney look, worn over embellished crop top and matching hot pants and was quoted to be “dripping in Stella McCartney diamonds, which are lab-grown,”.

Ariana Grande’s Fairy-tale Glam

R.E.M founder and chart topping singer Ariana played homage to her fairylike features which worked perfectly for her and the Garden of time theme. She wore a full face of her own makeup brand with holographic 3D appliques on her cheeks, almost appearing as wings  paired with stunning opal, diamond earrings.

Lana’s ‘Tree Chic’

Only Lana could make dressing like a tree look chic. With the help of her make up artists Etienne Ortega, she paired this Avant Garde look with a stunning doe like brown toned glam underneath the mesh of her look. He utilised his own makeup line, including his go-to Lana Del Rey lip combination, which consists of his Agave Glow Colour Stick in Petals in the middle and Soft Contour Lip Liner in Cinnamon Girl. Ortega applied Charlotte Tilbury’s Beautiful Skin Foundation on Del Rey’s face and her Super Easy Eye Palette to her eyes.

Zendaya has earned herself the title of a fashion icon over the last years, and being this year’s co-hostess of the Gala (together with Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth), she proved there is no coincidence in that. You think one peacock-like, mind-blowing gown is enough? Not for Zendaya. She left us obsessed with two looks by John Galliano, one from Maison Margiela, evoking this year’s iconic Artisanal show in Paris, and the other one from Givenchy Haute Couture SS 1996. So, let’s get to the details shall we? The Maison Margiela look was a blue-green, glowing mesh dress with golden-blue-green fruit and leaves ornaments, and an impressive decorative back. And just look at the other-worldly makeup – do we need to say anything more? Now, the Givenchy look was a mottled grey silk gown with a long trail, complemented by a pink-white-yellow, bouquet-like hat. Hats off!

Jennifer Lopez equals classy, powerful, and sexy femininity. Opting for a richly ornamented, semi-transparent, silver Schiaparelli gown by Daniel Roseberry, she made an incredible impression both with her glimmering outfit and her flawless body shape. The dress was inspired by butterfly wings, whose shiny embroidery with “warm silver pearls, rhinestones, and 2 500 000 silver foul bugles and beads” took over 800 hours to be completed, as Schiaparelli report. How would we sum up the look? Powerful, yet fragile; glowing, yet delicate, even spiderweb-like. The essence of “The Garden of Time.”

Ashley Graham, who co-hosted the red carpet livestream with Gwendoline Christie, opted for  a custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin gown, with the brand making a powerful debut at the Gala. Encrusted with Swarovski crystals and presenting LdSS signature cleavage neckline, the black dress with a leather-like corset was most body-hugging and sexy. And the glittering, semi-transparent trail gave the look a truly magical touch. She was glowing, wasn’t she!

Emma Chamberlain’s, Vogue red carpet special correspondent, garden of time turned out to be a slightly more gothic place. The brown, lace custom gown by Jean Paul Gaultier, together with the smoky eyes and sleek hair, brought the sleeping beauty theme to another level. Meticulously crafted, complemented by a lace trail and briar-like, long gloves, Emma created a mostly ethereal aura around her.

Now, a gown nobody would’ve imagined – one made of sand. Yes, sand. Tyla couldn’t wish for a more iconic debut at the Met Gala, appearing in a form-fitting sand sculpture by Balmain, which beautifully hugged her body – and in addition, made body movements quite challenging; in fact, Tyla was lifted like a true princess to the upper stairs level, as she was unable to climb them herself. But oh boy, it was worth it! Could you think of a more suggestive embodiment of the fragility of beauty and the fleetingness of time than a gown made of originally loose sand? Ah yes, just add an hourglass clutch bag. Well, this is just genius.

Dua Lipa, one of the Gala’s Sleeping Beauties, opted for a custom Marc Jacobs look, inspired by lingerie aesthetics and bringing to mind sexy nightgown fits. The two-part look depicted the melancholy and nostalgic romanticism of the evening’s theme, consisting of a black, long lace intarsia skirt with a trail, tied in the front, and a black-white satin top. What made this sensual look complete was a long feather stole and dotted tulle gloves. It’s indeed a Sleeping Beauty in flesh, reawakening fashion.

Time for an environmental approach – it’s Charli XCX in Marni’s gown by Francesco Risso, recycled from t-shirts from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Take a closer look at the dress to appreciate the details – the artistic loops, the linking of the layers of cotton, and the countless staples, which on one hand add an aesthetic – both edgy and glamorous – touch, and on the other one as if communicate the message of a desperate desire to survive, to live on, to fight the passage of time and be recreated and reused – in most environment-friendly manner possible.

“I felt like a warrior alien water goddess queen boots diva,” comments FKA Twigs about her fabulous look by Stella McCartney. And what else can we say? The craftsmanship is truly impressive – c’mon, just look at all the little diamonds, which go far beyond the design of the top and the shorts, but are also there as part of the makeup and the artistic hairstyle. The super long knitted cape is just as mind-blowing in its meticulous design. And, last but not least, as McCartney stresses – all materials are fully sustainable, “explor[ing] notions of renewal and rebirth, timeless craftsmanship and cutting-edge technologies.”

Janelle Monáe’s custom dress by Vera Wang is a perfect embodiment of such an approach to the Gala’s theme, as the cherry of top of the glittering, opalescent, laser-cut sequins gown is a transparent flower on Janelle’s arm – and suffice it to say that this lovely flower is a product of the recycling process of plastic bottles. It’s here that fashion meets rebirth, re-usage, and passage of time – or, actually, finding a way around it. And frankly speaking, that’s what sustainable fashion should be about.

What’s special about Mona Patel’s gown from Iris van Herpen? It’s not just that the dress looks like multiple butterfly wings. It’s not just that the butterfly-shaped corset ends in a long trail of seemingly moving, aerodynamic layers of ivory fabric. It’s not even that some of the layers are so thin that they astonishingly well mimic actual butterfly wings. It’s the literally moving butterflies that Mona’s arms are adorned with. With their golden legs and bodies, the butterflies seem to be dancing around Patel, taking us to a truly magical garden of time.

The Met Gala co-chair was definitely one of the best dressed at the Gala, and she kept the gold embellished theme going for her Xhosa afterparty, wearing a black leather bodysuit over tights with a gold body painted on it. ]]> New York City’s largest charity event, the Met Gala, began in 1946 and is traditionally held every year on the first Monday in May (except in 2021 due to the coronavirus). Chaired by Vogue’s Anna Wintour for the past 24 years, it takes place at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and always has a theme corresponding to the Costume Institute’s exhibition. Hundreds of thousands tune in to watch celebrities’ arrivals, anticipating the elaborate outfits in line with (and often completely ignorant of) the chosen theme. Here are some of our favourites from over the recent years:

Anne Hathaway 2015

Anne Hathaway’s golden lamé dress caused a stir at the 2015 Met Gala, with many fans calling her best-dressed of the event, while others slammed her for wearing a ‘hoodie’. We think the Oscar-winning actress’ custom Ralph Lauren gown looks amazing, and she pulls off a look very few could for the theme ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’. 

Halle Berry 2017

Her first time ever attending the gala, Halle Berry made her presence known in this elaborate sheer Versace catsuit. The theme for 2017 was devoted to the Japanese label Comme des Garçons and its founder, designer Rei Kawakubo— in short: avant-garde. We love the gold detailing on the dramatic train and that she kept her hair and makeup simple to show off the outfit.

Michelle Lamy was joined by her husband, Rick Owens, at the 2017 MET Gala. Both big fans of Comme des Garçons, she wore this abstract red dress from the FW16 collection, described to AnOther Magazine by Kawakubo as “18th-century punk”.

Billy Porter 2019

Dressed up as an Egyptian sun god, Porter was carried in on a daybed by six shirtless men wearing gold masks and necklaces. As he walked the pink carpet, he revealed a dramatic pair of gold wings. The theme was undoubtedly ‘camp’, and when asked by Variety to describe his look in 3 words, he said “Diana Ross, ‘Mahogany’”.

Kaia Gerber

Kaia Gerber attended the event wearing an Alexander McQueen dress and some stunning jewellery courtesy of Kwiat Diamonds. The main aspect of note though was her beauty look, with the model beaming with a soft glow, long lashes and some dark eyeshadow with tips of a metallic blue, all of which was courtesy of YSL Beauty.

Kendal Jenner

Kendall opted to remove her eyebrows last night (not literally though), dying them to make them barely noticeable to the naked eye. This made her stunningly long eyelashes pop even more and look even longer than they were, so it was definitely an inspired choice.

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia embraced the mythical last night and wore a pale lavender dress which sparkled across the night. She made sure to match her makeup too, wearing a dusty lavender eyeshadow with a subtle gradient that ran out to the brow, further adding to mysterious look.

Cardi B

Even though a lot of people may not notice nails on the night, that didn’t stop Cardi B from going all out with hers. The rapper opted for some golden pointed nails which were covered in an abundance of golden and silver jewels and chains, with the collection of jewelry bringing some serious bling to the night.

Lizzo

The most jaw dropping aspect of Lizzo’s look were her mesmerisingly twisted nails. The nails, which extended to twice the length of the singer’s fingers, were black with subtle hints of bronze and twisted out into some delightfully gothic points, perfectly blending with her already gothic outfit.

Naomi Campbell

Naomi embraced the jewels last night, not only wearing a dress adorned with crystals but extending those crystals up onto her face too. The crystals sat amongst a dark eyeshadow, matching her dress and offering a suitably mysterious vibe, and a pale pink lipstick which gave a light brushing of colour to the outfit.

Megan The Stallion

Megan’s beauty look was totally on point last night, with the rapper donning a stunning silver eyeshadow which was immaculately applied and commanded the room with ease. The shade of the eye also matched Megan’s shoulder pads and was combined with an equally commanding lip for a complete, fierce look.

Teyana Taylor

Teyana embraced the colour of royalty last night in both her dress and her makeup. The deep shade of purple that the singer was wearing matched perfectly with her outfit and brought out some mystery in her eyes, creating a truly captivating look. Teyana also wore a nude shade lipstick which was glossy and brought a subtle shine to her face.

Winnie Harlow

Winnie Harlow also sported some seriously long lashes, and combined them with a matching black winged eyeliner which styled out into a seriously sharp point. Her eyebrow game was also fierce, looking sleek and smooth.

Cynthia embodied pure royalty last night, both thanks to her outfit and her beauty look. Her nails were commanding most of the attention, with Cynthia opting for a black and gold colour palette which allowed both colours to stand out well amongst each other and complement each other at the same time.

Gigi Hadid

Gigi wore a ruby red outfit last night and took steps to ensure that her makeup matched too. The model wore a stunningly bright ruby red lipstick which shimmered and shined down the red carpet, matching flawlessly with the rest of her look.

Bella Hadid

Bella went for a gothic look last night, and whilst her dress was obviously a large part of that, her hair helped too. The model opted for a traditional middle parting and braids that ran down both sides of her face, evoking a traditionally Victorian style that worked well with her outfit.

Kim Kardashian

Kim kept it simple and subtle with her makeup last night. The model’s enticingly long lashes were complemented by her smooth, sleek brows and she wore a pale nude lipstick which brought attention to her lips without being overbearing or detracting from any other aspect of her look.

]]> The biggest night in the fashion calendar took place last night, yes, the Met Gala finally returned for its annual outing and the outfits this year did not disappoint! The theme for this year’s event was In America: An Anthology of Fashion so there was a wide display of American fashion history on show, ranging from famed brands, to designers, and to iconic individual outfits too. There are a LOT of looks to get through so without further ado here are the greatest looks of the night!

Natasha Poonawalla

For her take on the theme, Natasha put the spotlight on the traditional Indian garment of the sari to bring some multi-culturalism to the evening. The sari itself was a wonderful bronze colour and adorned with multiple embellishments for some added sparkle. Also attached was a bronze plate with various twists and curls which added some theatrics, and a healthy dose of matching bronze jewellery for a sophisticated finishing touch.

Kylie Jenner

Here comes the bride! Kylie took the opportunity to create her own special day for the event, showing up in a billowing, pristine white bridal gown as a tribute to the late Virgil Abloh. The garment had a unique spin though, with a sportswear styled approach on the torso of the dress which was combined with a not-so-traditional bridal veil fitted to… a backwards snapback. Welcome to the weddings of the future.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj went in the opposite direction for her outfit, going for an all-black look with a mysterious edge. Minaj wore some skin-tight leather trousers, a feathered black corset with an attached cape, and fitted herself with multiple black jewels across the top of her body. She, like Kylie, also opted for a cap as part of her outfit, combining the traditional theatricality of the Met with loungewear casuals perfectly.

Kaia Gerber

Kaia Gerber attended the event wearing a metallic Alexander McQueen dress and some stunning jewellery courtesy of Kwiat Diamonds. This is a look that perfectly captures ‘gilded glamour’ whilst allowing Kaia to put her own unique spin on it!

Hailey Bieber

Wearing a Saint Laurent dress, Hailey Bieber rocked a glamorously vintage look last night in shining white and fluffy accents. The dress cut a slim silhouette down Bieber’s figure and was fitted with a sleek cape adorned with some dramatic fur, which Hailey took great pleasure in swooshing about. But honestly, wouldn’t we all?

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo embraced a mystical, fairy-tale theme for outfit, looking like a fairy on her way to grant some mystical powers to the rest of the attendees. Her lavender dress was fitted with sequins which gave it plenty of sparkle which helped to add to that mystical feel and she also wore a pair of slightly lighter opera gloves. For a finishing touch, the singer also wore a pair of lavender butterflies in her hair, embracing mother nature just as we all should.

Lizzo

Wearing Thom Browne, Lizzo looked incredibly gothic last night and brought some great theatrical drama to the red carpet. The huge velvet gown was embroidered with stunning rose prints running across the entirety of the garment and giving it a golden glow fit for a royal. Also noteworthy were Lizzo’s nails which were dramatically long and gave off serious Maleficent vibes.

Gigi Hadid

Take a puffer jacket, size it up, and do that ten times more. Gigi wore perhaps the most oversized puffer jacket the world has ever seen last night, bringing some serious Y2K energy to the red carpet and some serious colour too, with the jacket being a glorious ruby red colour which heightened the outfit and gave it some serious glamour. Gigi also wore a skintight corset underneath, adding some sensuality to the look whilst keeping  in theme.

Bella Hadid

Bella embraced a fully gothic style for her look of the night, wearing a custom corset and lace leggings with a chiffon skirt and chiffon shawl, lace gloves and leather sandals, all courtesy of Burberry. The outfit had an 80s gothic vibe to it and definitely could have fit into a music video from the decade, no problem.

Kendall Jenner

Taking Cinderella in a darker direction, Kendall Jenner wore a stunning black gown made by Prada and looked suitably dramatic. The gown was paired with a sheer top which added some slight Y2K vibes to the outfit, giving it a more modern edge whilst still looking undeniably classic.

Simone Ashley

Collaborating with Moschino, Simone Ashley wore a dramatic black-satin opera coat with humongous sleeves and combined it with a golden embroidered bustier top which added some texture to the look. The outfit was incredibly sophisticated and presented a unique look amongst the many we saw last night.

Rosalia

Rosalia embraced the maximalism last night, wearing a custom Givenchy gown with an incredibly detailed and embroidered corset and a huge ruffled gown which, combined, offered a seriously vintage vibe from decades past. The singer kept some modern elements in though, with some huge silver earrings and black, Matrix styled shades giving the outfit a distinct edge.

Blake Lively

Undoubtedly one of the most stunning looks of the night, Blake Lively wore a twisted Versace gown that started with a copper coloured gradient up top and gradually morphed into a cool ice blue further down the dress, as a reference to the way the Statue of Liberty has changed colour overtime. The hypnotic look was inspired by New York City architecture, capturing the nights theme in the best way.

Kim K wore a literal piece of fashion history last night, wearing the dress worn by the late Marilyn Monroe when she sang Happy Birthday to former president John F. Kennedy. The dress looks just as stunning today as it did then, proving just how timeless and iconic it is, and proving how long-lasting fashion has the power to be.

Billie Eilish

Billie wore a dress with a unique colour palette last night, evoking themes of classical artwork with the cool pastels and neutrals. The dress had green lace sleeves which ere embroidered with delicate flowers along the arm, and the corset of the dress was fitted with a huge lavender flower which was a nice finishing touch.

Jodie Turner-Smith

Jodie Turner-Smith collaborated with Gucci and wore a crystal chain bra which led into a fringed skirt with pleated chiffon details. The look was one of the more delicate of the night and didn’t attempt to do anything big or grand, which is exactly what worked in its favour. Further proof that there is timeless beauty in simplicity.

Nicola Coughlan

Nicola embraced the light and the dark as part of her outfit, wearing equal parts black and pink. The always pleasing colour palette was part of a grand dress with huge shoulders and a billowing cape. The dress was also fitted with multiple pink stems poking out across the outfit, giving it a unique sense of definition and personality.

Chloe Bailey

Definitely one of the more unique looks of the night, Chloe was dressed in head-to-toe gold in a dress with a simple yet at the same time incredibly unique cut which gave it a personality of its own. Chloe also wore a huge butterfly necklace around her neck, giving the outfit some serious theatrics whilst still remaining classy and cool.

Genesis Suero

Influencer Genesis Suero looked like she stepped out of a classical fairytale last night in a golden and silver dress fitted with an unbelievable amount of embellishments. The outfit was classical in nearly every sense and is another example of a timeless style that will never fall out of favour.

]]> The Met Gala has been one of the standout annual events of the fashion calendar for decades now, and with 2022’s Met Gala only a week away, and an exciting theme announced by Anna Wintour, that being In America: An Anthology of Fashion, we thought we would look over some of the most iconic looks to ever come from the gala. There are fairytale dreamscapes, theatrical extravaganzas and vintage glamour galore, so get ready for this year’s event by checking out some of our favourite looks below!

Naomi Campbell (2019)

The phrase ‘pretty in pink’ has really never been more appropriate than to describe Naomi Campbell’s fierce feathered look from the 2019 Met Gala. The luxurious couture gown, designed by Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, draped stunningly down and behind Naomi and was accompanied by some intricately designed pink tights and minimalist pink heels. Cute, elegant and sophisticated all in one, Naomi brought a beautiful dashing of colour to that year’s event in wonderfully flamboyant fashion.

Billie Eilish (2021)

Billie Eilish has become the voice of a generation for Gen Z, connecting with young people in a way that very few famous faces have been able to do before, particularly when it comes to modern issues like mental health struggles. However, you’d be forgiven for thinking she was a famous face from decades long past by looking at her 2021 Met appearance which embodied totally classic Hollywood glamour in every conceivable way. The stunning peach gown, designed by Oscar De La Renta, was made in collaboration with Billie with the designer declaring to go totally fur-free for his brand in the future, a cause which Billie was very passionate and vocal about when posting about the event online. If there was ever any doubt that sustainable and ethical fashion couldn’t look astonishing, then Billie and Oscar proved that notion to be totally wrong.

Lady Gaga (2019)

In 2019, Lady Gaga didn’t just walk and pose for the cameras on the Met carpet, no, she put on a whole show! Arriving wearing a bright fuchsia dress and giant bow by Brandon Maxwell and accompanied by a number of men in sharp tuxedos carrying umbrellas, who frankly looked like they would fit perfectly into a Mary Poppins musical number, Gaga strutted around in the huge number before removing the dress and revealing not 1, not 2, but 3 other outfits! Much like a Russian nesting doll each outfit was hiding another underneath, going from the huge fuchsia gown to a sleek black gown matching with the men accompanying her, then to a slim fit fuchsia dress (complete with huge block telephone) and, finally fully stripped down into a sparkling bra and tights which revealed Gaga’s signature platform heels. The theme was camp and it’s safe to say that Gaga slayed the category!

Zendaya (2019)

Also attending 2019’s camp themed event was none other than Zendaya who made a truly magical appearance. Looking like she had stepped straight into the Fairy Godmother’s heels from Cinderella, the former Disney star stepped into the event wearing a rather dark and flat gown which, after a wave of the magic wand from her Fairy Godbrutha, transformed into a glowing and vibrant fairytale dream. Who says that magic is only for the imagination?

Rihanna (2015)

The iconic dress that inspired many a meme. Chinese designer Guo Pei became an overnight sensation thanks to her design of Rihanna’s dress, which helped her to be named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2016. The stunning yellow and golden dress was lined with luxurious fur and expanded out into an enormous trail behind Rihanna which contained some beautifully intricate designs. With a golden headpiece also featured, Rihanna was rocking enough gold to make even the ancient Egyptians jealous.

Beyonce (2015)

Beyonce adorned herself with quite possibly all of the sequins and jewels in the world in 2015, wearing a see-through dress littered with sparkle. Arranged intelligently so as to line certain parts of the dress, such as the neckline and cuffs, and also to not reveal too much of Beyonce the dress had a strong structure despite being made of very little. The sequins tapered down into the bottom of the dress too, making Beyonce look as if she was stepping on the sparkling stars with each step she took. There’s that real-world magic again!

Ariana Grande (2018)

Ariana Grande embraced her Italian heritage in her first ever appearance at the Met in 2018, wearing a stunningly ethereal gown designed by Vera Wang. The immediate standout of the expertly structured gown was its use of artwork from the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, giving both the dress and Ariana a beautiful sense of refinement and elegance. The entire outfit was adorned with symbolism and was an intelligent way for Ariana and Vera to pay homage to Grande’s Italian roots in way that might not seem immediately obvious. Truly one of the most stunning looks of the past few Galas.

Lizzo (2019)

Huge feathers! Tons and tons of pink! Too much? Never! Lizzo looked fabulously fierce in 2019 wearing a humongous feather frock designed by Marc Jacobs. The frock was dyed with both bright and pastel hues giving it a pleasing contrast which also carried over to the dress and gloriously oversized ribbon that Lizzo was wearing underneath. The passion for pink didn’t end there though as Lizzo also donned some pink blush and lipstick as well as a fabulous bright pink wig accessorised with jewels. Maybe ‘pretty in pink’ is more apt for Lizzo instead?

Kendall Jenner (2021)

For the most recent Met Gala, Kendall Jenner collaborated with Givenchy creative director Matthew M. Williams for a diamond encrusted dress that was the very definition of luxury. The dress itself was sheer and ran from shoulders to floor, with the diamonds making up all of the details and design of the outfit by being placed in numerous intricate and highly detailed patterns and forms. Clusters of diamonds also sat upon Kendall’s shoulders and ran along her chest with added fringing for extra effect. A huge diamond choker also wrapped around Jenner’s neck for a stunning finishing touch.

Kendall & Kylie (2019)

Showing up as a duo in 2019, Kendall and Kylie were equal parts heaven and hell with Kylie in a pastel feathery wonder whilst Kendall wore a dramatic and fiery dress which fiercely shot out from her left arm. Attending such an event as a duo could be dangerous as one party could end up upstaging the other but this, thankfully, was not the case as both sisters looked equally fabulous. Donatella Versace designed both dresses and worked her signature theatrical style into them flawlessly.

Normani (2021)

Normain collaborated with Valentino in 2021 for a ball gown that looked like it could have been taken straight out of a Disney princess film. The regal gown was coloured in a shiny mustard-yellow and featured enormous puffed sleeves which extended far beyond Normani’s shoulders. She also made sure to match the colour of her eyeshadow to that of the dress which made the entire look just that touch more cohesive.

Zoë Kravitz (2021)

Another iconic jeweled look from 2021, this time with Zoë Kravitz wearing a dress courtesy of Saint Laurent. The slimline dress ran down Kravitz in diamond shaped patterns which revealed her body underneath. The dress struck a balance between luxurious and minimalist with the cut of the dress being quite simplistic and understated, serving as a nice contrast to the large amount of jewelry. Kravitz also wore a pair of earrings which flowed well with the dress and helped tie the outfit together.

Megan Fox (2021)

Red is one of the most striking and eye-catching colours in the fashion world and Megan Fox proved this to be the case in 2021, wearing an embellished ruby red gown courtesy of Dundas. Equal parts modern and retro with a seriously seductive vibe as well, Megan was channeling sex symbol Bettie Page right down to the way she styled her bangs. The dress was intricately designed and, as well as being seductive, was also incredibly classy and undeniably elegant.

Kim Kardashian (2019)

When you think of the phrase ‘form fitting’ it’s quite hard to imagine anything more fitting than Kim K’s Mugler dress from the 2019 Met Gala. The dress hugged her body almost impossibly closely and was embellished with jewels in the shapes of raindrops which combined with the wet look of her hair created a unified theme for the outfit. The entire look made Kim look as if she were a mermaid who had walked straight out of the ocean. Maybe she should be a contender to play Aerial in a Little Mermaid remake?

Cardi B (2019)

Normally stars bring their looks to the red carpet however Cardi B instead brought the red carpet with her in 2019. Designed by Thom Browne as a celebration of the female form the dress, which was blood red, extended out roughly ten feet and was decorated with 30,000 dyed coque feathers, was a huge undertaking taking 35 people approximately 2,000 hours to create. We think it’s safe to say that it was worth every second of that effort.

JLo (2019)

Donatella Versace worked her magic for the Met once again, this time with JLo who was dressed head-to-toe (literally) in diamonds. The diamond encrusted dress draped gorgeously down JLo and tapered out gently at the bottom into a cluster of jewels that lit up the pink carpet. JLo also wore a delightfully over the top diamond encrusted headpiece that flew down seamlessly into the dress and made it look like she had diamonds for hair too. An enormous pendant around her neck rounded out the outfit and also served as a striking centerpiece.

SZA (2018)

Once again Donatella Versace proved she is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to Met looks, this time dressing SZA like a princess in a blush pink gown complete with thigh-high stiletto boots. The cosmic fairytale dress truly looked like something out of a futuristic dreamscape, partly helped by the enormous golden headpiece decorated with stars which stuck extended upwards and outwards defying gravity. Maybe it’s time for fairytales to modernise a little and take a page out of Donatella and SZA’s book.

Blake Lively (2018)

Donatella, once again, made her mark on the Met Gala by this time designing a dress or Blake Lively. The custom gown featured an embroidered bodice that apparently took more than 600 hours to make, as well as $2 million worth of Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. The expert embroidery ran down the entire length of the dress and exuded a truly classical feel that could have placed it at the center of a masquerade ball from decades past. The deep red of the dress only added to the authenticity of that dramatic and theatrical feel.

Billy Porter (2019)

After spending all of his time introducing fierce looks in Pose it was about time for Billy Porter to get his chance in the spotlight and he did not disappoint at all. Collaborating with The Blonds, Porter was carried into the event on a velvet bed by six men (who also all looked fierce) and was covered head to toe in gold. Inspired by the Old Testament Billy truly looked like he was from another time period and even more looked like a king we should all have been bowing to. The drama didn’t stop with the fabulous entrance either as when Porter got up to walk the pink carpet, he extended out his arms and his outfit transformed into a huge pair of wings. Talk about a pose.

]]> The biggest fashion event was finally allowed to roll out its red-carpet last night, the 13th of September, after a year of being locked away. This meant the anticipation for The Met Gala was even larger and the looks served last night did not disappoint. We weren’t only mesmerised by the outfits, but the beauty looks were just as captivating. Each year the event has a theme and this year it was ‘In America: A lexicon of fashion’, meaning a patriotic celebration of American fashion which was mirrored through the celebrities beauty looks. This ranged from film references with Hollywood styled hair to make up shades reflecting the colours of the flag. 

The carpet was overflowing with breath-taking beauty looks as no outfit is complete without make up or glam hair to finish off the ensemble. Here are the best beauty looks from the night. 

Jennifer Lopez

J Lo’s ensemble was inspired by the Wild West as she went for a cowgirl themed look with the fedora styled hat as her long, messy look ponytail swung down her back. Lopez’s make up look followed suit with a smokey eye matching the colour palette of her whole attire and creating a smouldering look. Achieve JLO’s smokey eye with the Scott Barnes cosmetics ‘Snatural No1 Palette’. 

Amanda Gorman 

Amanda Gorman dazzled the carpet as she took sparkle to another level with statement silver crystals delicately placed across her face. Gorman’s look was inspired by the statue of liberty as she co-ordinated her make up look with a symbolic glistening head piece which framed her slick bun. 

Teyanna Taylor 

Teyanna Taylor stunned us with her extravagant head piece which stole the show. A crystal ribbon which snaked its way through her messy up do elevating her hairstyle to the ultimate glam look. Her make-up was also sleek with slick eye liner which was just as sharp as her contour. 

Gigi Hadid 

Gigi Hadid embraced the redhead look last night with her new ginger locks styled into a thick, high ponytail which was finished off with a crystal embellished Prada logo clip. Her make up followed a 60s retro style with soft blue eyeshadow paired with a cat eye flick and a nude lip. The different shades of this look worked together as a subtle representation of the colours of the American flag. 

To our surprise Gigi Hadid’s make-up artist, Erin Parsons, revealed she used an array of high-street products to achieve Hadid’s glam look. This includes the Maybelline Eraser Eye concealer which gave the skin a flawless finish. 

Emma Chamberlain

Emma Chamberlain made her debut at the Met Gala last night and she was glowing. Her look featured a flicked out blow-dry giving her hair the bouncy volume we all desire. As well as fluorescent green liner which lit up her eyes – inspiring us to now reach for that green eye make up! 

Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X once again did not disappoint with his lavish looks! He went for simple but effective detailing with gold accents placed by his eyes to match the astounding outfit. The clean-cut edges of his hair and beard also gave him a fresh and slick look. 

Megan Fox

What makes more of a statement then a red lip? Megan Fox took to the carpet with a powerful, deep red pout and distinct, carved out brows. As well, her bold look featured a tied-up braid that reached her hips which we are not used to seeing on Fox as she usually wears her locks down. Finishing off this hairstyle was a short sharp fringe.  

Rita Ora

Rita Ora appeared on the carpet with a feminine, delicate make up look featuring a colour palette of soft pinks with rose coloured blush warming up her complexion and a slight smokey eye. Her hair was brushed into a glossy side parting and was clipped back with some sparkling hair accessories. 

Hailey Bieber

Hailey Bieber looked stunning on the carpet last night with the pure Hollywood glam look of her make up including the subtle brown shades of her eyeshadow. Her complexion was radiant and natural looking as well as a golden glow of highlighter and sparkle giving her a fresh look. Hailey’s hair was styled into loose curls that sat just below the shoulders as she opted for a more simple look this year. 

Maisie Williams

Maisie Williams did not hold back this year with her gothic glam look. Her Queen of Hearts inspired make up featured dot detail eyeliner as she also rocked the bleached brows look that only a select few can pull off! As well the dark lip and green nails tied the whole look together. Her hair was also the centrepiece to this ensemble as she used a headpiece that was styled into a horn like shape, which blended into her hair effortlessly as her aim was to pay homage to The Matrix. Maisie was the gothic goddess of the night!

The renowned ‘First Monday of May’ is approaching, and if you love fashion as much as we do you were probably wondering about the future of the Met Gala… questioning whether the iconic gala would be returning this year or not. The cancellation of the event, which we witnessed in 2020 was the expected outcome for this year’s edition too, but luckily for us (and the fashion world), a few things have changed this time around.

Anna Wintour and Andrew Bolton, the godmother and godfather of the annual ceremony in honour of the Costume Institute, have officially announced its official return and possible themes. Yes, you’ve heard it right… the Met Gala is back and will have more than just one theme. The exhibition will be divided into two separate chapters, which technically means two Met Galas.

The first exhibition ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ which will be presented on September 18, will be centred on the “modern vocabulary of American fashion”, and will feature the new design stars of the current American fashion landscape. The second exhibition “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” will resemble more the previous (and familiar) Met calendar, and will take place on May 2 of 2022, (the First Monday of May). As the name suggests its theme will revolve around the main names in American haute couture.

The division of the event into two different exhibitions is a rather unusual one, but an exciting one after all. There may still be uncertainty surrounding the new path taken by the event but what is certain is that it will be an exciting celebration of America. A way to explore the American fashion legacy while reflecting the current times by transporting the limitations imposed by the pandemic into the fashion scene.
