As lockdown gradually brought everyone’s lives to a complete halt and we scribbled over all the plans for the foreseeable future our diaries held, never mind the date you had planned for next month or your cousin’s wedding- the real heartache occurred when you had to (begrudgingly) put a big fat cross through ‘hair colour appointment’.

A lot of us are feeling at a loss right now; the feeling of helplessness you might be feeling as you watch the colour that your stylist painstakingly picked out for you slowly vanish as your lighter roots begin to appear, and then dominate your hair turning your once luscious locks into a kind of upside-down balayage gone-wrong. Or the agonising feeling as your build-up of carefully chosen high-lights and low-lights fade right before your very eyes. Then there are the boyfriends, husbands and partners of the ‘blondes’ of the world are gradually realising that they’ve actually been with an undercover brunette all these years.

To take your mind off the state your hair might be in right now, and give you a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel, Voir spoke to Fudge Colour Genius Tracy Hayes about how to maintain healthy hair and preserve your stylist’s hard work as best you can- ready for the post-lockdown revamp your poor locks will truly deserve!

1) Do you have any tips on how to cover roots and avoid messing up your current hairstylists/colourists hard work?

I would avoid trying to colour your own roots at home, this could result in a hair disaster, and not been able to visit your hairdresser to rectify, so a Root Concealer is a perfect go-to. 4) What are your thoughts on Co-washing?

I think this is very much up to the individual on how you personally feel at not washing your hair as regularly as you normally would. I think giving your hair an occasional break and just rinsing with conditioner is certainly not harmful, but if you are thinking of not washing to keep the condition and save hairs natural oils, then there are plenty of hair treatments available, and great shampoos & conditioner’s that will keep your hair in prime conditioner. A trend that was way too underrated, colourful mascara is just such a unique way to add a pop of colour to your usually ordinary makeup look. It’s such a different way to stand out and be bold; like when you feel you need something to match your confidence, just go and slap on some bright blue mascara – honey you will feel like Michelle Obama: powerful with lashes like that!

The colours show up richer on lighter hair colour, however, if you’re struggling for that vibrant oomph, try using a white eyelash primer beforehand; this will just create a blank canvas so that the mascara colour will go on easier and without having to go against a darker hair first. A great lash primer is Max Factor Lash Revival Volume Boosting Primer £12.99, which also has vitamin E and oils to keep your lashes healthy and hydrated.A great tip if you’re struggling to cover the lashes from the roots is to use a fan brush, this will help coat as many lashes as possible giving you a much more vibrant polished look.

Let’s start with gold mascara, which you might think would just make you look like one of the rich people in the Hunger Games…but we promise it’ll look so much better! Urban Decay has a whole range of coloured mascaras called Team Special Effect Coloured Mascara £19.50, which comes in 5 different shades. The gold one is called Dime/Goldmine with one side being gold and the other being a beautiful silver. Try an Egyptian black liner look with black mascara on the top lashes and gold on the bottom, the black background makes the gold pop so much better.

Moving onto blue mascara which is probably the most popular colour (if it isn’t brown or black). I tell you what, it’s so hard to find coloured mascara that is anything other than blue; it’s so strange that companies have discontinued most of their bright mascaras since the trend died down! Make Up For Ever had a fantastic range but, well we all know what happened there. Anywho; This look is probably my favourite, using the mascara on the bottom lashes and as a cat flick liner, just pop on some regular black lashes on the top lash line and the look is just so well put together. My favourite blue mascara just has to be Benefit Cosmetics Badgal Bang in blue £22.50. It’s just so pigmented and Badgal Bang is an award-winning mascara!

Pink mascara, now this is what we’ve been waiting for. Who doesn’t want barbie lashes?! For this look, try out the YSL Beauty Vinyl Couture Mascara in Fuchsia £26. A beautifully smooth texture paired with a lengthening brush which is meant to be ‘as bright as a vinyl’. There really is only one way to do pink mascara…smother the rest of your eye in a one toned pigmented pink shadow for that duo matching killer look.

To finish this colourful lash moment we’ve been having, last but certainly, not least is the NYX Worth The Hype Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara in purple £9. Yep, you read that right, £9. We all know NYX is one of the incredibly cheap-but-actually-works brands, so it just wouldn’t be right to not include their products. An amazing blend of volumizing and lengthening formula and bold purple tone works perfectly with a natural lip and eye to let your eyes do all the talking.

As fortune would have it, Newport Street Gallery is hosting an exhibition featuring artists who investigate colour. Whilst being different in terms of how they use their media, they all have colour in common.

The works of Helen Beard, Sadie Laska and Boo Saville feature in this exhibition entitled ‘True Colours’. Presenting over 50 of their pieces, this exhibition is the largest any of them have done. We are thankful they’ve been given this opportunity to showcase their work, as they each have something unique to offer.

Helen Beard portrays sexual encounters through a palette of immense colour. Her work is an array of depictions that drift from realism: abstract shapes provide us with an interesting representation of gender, eroticism and sexual psychology. Brush strokes are visible, but the shapes create a smooth feel to her work.

Using painting and collage, Sadie Laska is able to suggest the nonconformist artistic aesthetic of her current base New York. She often incorporates recycled items and objects she’s found in her work, envisioning an expressively bold texture about her pieces. A member of I.U.D, an underground drum-based band, her work holds the same rebellious spirit as her music.

Boo Saville has been producing large-scale abstract pieces since 2014. Her works are perfect gradients of colour: flawless sections of rainbow that are created from up to 40 layers of paint, but with no evidence of mark making. Her works are layers of emotion and memory, representations of momentary thought.
