The new images from Vogue place us back in the hallowed, vitrine-like offices of Runway
magazine, where style is not simply a backdrop but a language of power and identity. Anne
Hathaway’s Andy Sachs, now older and more seasoned, returns to Runway amid a media landscape
in flux – print mags are struggling, digital culture has transformed public perception, and fashion’s
power hierarchies are being reconfigured.

In the first stills, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) sits at her desk in a sharply tailored blazer, her
posture as formidable as ever. Vogue’s set photography also captures a wide-eyed, red-bobbed
Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), poised and still ready with her signature cutting wit – suggesting that
even two decades on, Runway’s internal politics are as sharp as its hemlines.

Nigel (Stanley Tucci) too returns, impeccably suited and offering his trademark combination of

Andrea “Dre” Greene, a young lady from Houston, would do anything for her favourite R&B singer Ni’Jah: max out credit cards, shun her sister’s boyfriend, and even murder the star’s haters. Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah) stars as the psychotic Dre in the seven-part satirical psychological thriller that debuted earlier this month on Amazon Prime.

Writers and creators Donald Glover and Janine Nabers wanted to make it blatantly obvious that pop star Ni’Jah is a parallel to Beyoncé. Of course, Ni’Jah’s fanbase’s nickname is the Swarm very similar to Beyoncé stan’s nickname the Beyhive, Dre accidentally bites Ni’Jah just like the rumoured incident with a fan biting Bey, Ni’Jah’s releases “Festival” about her unfaithful husband much like Beyoncé’s Lemonade, and there’s even a Solange doppelganger in the show. The series even begins with the slightly on-the-nose message: “This is not a work of fiction. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events, is intentional”.

Though the events are inspired by details and incidents throughout Beyoncé’s career, the examination of fandom culture is of course applicable beyond her fans. “Beyhive don’t kill us, it’s not that bad, it’s actually pretty cool!”, Childish Gamino joked at the premiere of the show.

Glover called Swarm a “post-truth TV show” in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. The Atlanta writer and Janine Nabers assess the dangers of parasocial relationships showing how online fandoms can spring into witch hunt attacks, dox those that diss the star they stan, invade celebrities’ privacy, and even go as far as violence through using Dre as depiction of an extreme case.

Talking to Vulture, Glover said he wanted Dre to be “brutal” and told Fishback to watch Isabella Huppert in the Piano Teacher for inspiration for her performance. However, some of the writer’s comments on how he prepared the actress for the role have rubbed people the wrong way. Glover told Vulture he instructed the actress to: “Think of it more like an animal and less like a person”.

Despite the lack of help she received in interpreting her character’s deeper motives, Dominique Fishback delivers a spine-chilling performance as Dre as she continues further into psychosis as the years pass. The brief connection we get to see between Chloe Bailey (Black-ish) who plays Dre’s sister Marissa and Dre gives us more insight into the softer side of the character but unlucky for us their screen time together is short lived. Packed with gore, tension, as well as dark humour, Swarm is a thriller that keeps its audience engaged with its hooking plot and dramatic performances. 

The show seems to find its groove more as we get further down the rabbit hole. Just as Dre struggles to distinguish between reality and fiction so does the viewer as episode six plunges us into a true crime documentary following a police detective trying to solve Dre’s murders. In a particularly meta, twist Donald Glover himself even gives a red-carpet interview about him making a TV show based on Dre’s life therefore suggesting Dre exists in our world. It’s a mind melt moment nearly as genius as the second half of  the American Horror Story series Roanoke.

A little ironically Twitter and TikTok have been hyped over popstar Billie Eillish’s acting debut as the extremely intense blonde lesbian cult leader Eva who takes Dre under her wing in one of the murder’s more vulnerable moments. She’s just the slice of camp that the show needed.

So far all we know about the plot is that it will follow a fictional musician, played by  Anne Hathaway, showing her relationship with a famous fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel. 

The pop melodrama will be directed by David Lowery best known for his raved-about A24 supernatural drama A Ghost Story (2017). This will be his third A24 film having also directed the fantasy epic The Green Knight(2021). Lowery recently directed the new live-action Disney adaptation of Peter Pan, Peter Pan & Wendy(2023), which is set to premiere on Disney + on the 28^th April.

Eight-time Grammy winner Jack Antonoff has been shaping pop as we know it for years working alongside Taylor Swift the 1975, Lorde, St. Vincent, Florence and the Machine, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Clairo to produce the albums synonymous with this decade and the 2010s. Recently he co-produced Lana Del Rey’s experimental Americana fusion record Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd released earlier this month. Charli and Jack have been buddy buddy for years and a return to collaborating felt eminent following both pair’s past successes. Back in 2015, Charli and Jack joined forces co-headlining the Charli and Jack Do Tour around America.

This is not the first time Charli’s has made a welcome appearance in an A24 film with her track ‘Hot Girls’ featuring in the satirical thriller Bodies Bodies Bodies last year. Antonoff meanwhile fashioned the 70s-style soundtrack for the hit kid’s film Minions: The Rise of Gru featuring Diana Ross, Tame Impala, St Vincent, and Kali Uchis.

To celebrate the announcement Charli shared a throwback photo of herself and Jack commenting “hate myself for this pic but it had to be done”. She also called out Pitchfork for the photo they posted of her when they announced the news sarcastically writing in the comment section, “Crushed the photo choice love you”. (She’s a blessing to our feed).

The Madonna of hyper pop herself has been teasing her return to the studio for the last month. She wittily captioned one Instagram post: “crash made me have a fair few breakdowns but next one gonna be worse. i feel it”. Charli will be performing at Coachella next month the one-of-a-kind festival held in the Colorado Desert. 

Mother Mary is set to be filmed in Germany later this year. As of now, the film has yet to receive a release date.

Aries love action and The Woman King is packed with well-choreographed fight scenes (as well as a bit of romance, amazing acting, and a great storyline). Brave and inspiring – it has Aries written all over it.

Taurus signs with their down-to-earth yet sensual nature love a realistic romance film that plays with the conventions of a typical rom-com. David O. Russel’s quirky love story The Silver Linings Playbook (2012) is sure to pack a punch with Taurus. Set in a small town in Pennsylvania, Pat a former teacher with bipolar disorder is released from a psychiatric hospital and moves back in with his parents, and meets a young widow, Tiffany, who also struggles with mental illness. The two bond over their struggles and Tiffany offers to help him get his wife back if he enters a dance competition with her. Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro, it’s an interesting portrayal of mental illness resulting in a bittersweet flick a Taurus will appreciate.

Geminis have an unfair reputation for being the two-faced one among the signs when actually, they are the most extroverted, playful, lively, and social. Hidden behind their bubbly surface they are also fiercely loyal and intelligent. This is why Emma (2020) is perfect for them. Based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, Emma revolves around the well-meaning but blundering titular character as she plays matchmaker to her friends whilst accidentally getting caught up in a romance of her own. Geminis will totally see themselves in the charismatic, witty, and nosey Emma played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

Oh, sweet emotional Cancers beware – this movie will have you a wreck. Dear John (2010) is your typical heart-warming yet soul-destroying romance film. Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, it follows the life of a soldier (Channing Tatum) after he falls in love with a young woman (Amanda Seyfried). Though they decide to exchange letters with each other after he is deployed to the war the course of true love never did run smoothly. This film is full of heart – perfect for softies like Cancers. It’s a sob fest for sure.

We all watched it and loved it as kids but when was the last time you revisited Wild Child (2008)? It still holds up as an iconic uber-camp teen movie with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Poppy, played by Emma Roberts, the admirably bratty teen from Malibu (who couldn’t get more Leo) is shipped out to boarding school in England when her partying pushes her dad too far. Mud, pink, Gucci, boys, lacrosse – expect it all.

Virgo

August 23^rd – 22^nd September

A thoughtful horror is ideal for a movie night pick for Virgo. The perfect sleuth, hardworking, reliable, patient, and most importantly logical Virgo doesn’t scare easily and will enjoy a spooky flick clouded in mystery. Jordan Peele’s Us (2019) is just the creative psychological horror that will challenge them. Gabe (Winston Duke) and Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) Wilson take their kids to their beach house expecting to unplug and unwind with friends but as night draws near chaos descends when their murderous doppelgängers arrive demanding retribution.

Libra

23^rd September – 23^rd October

Represented by the scales, Libra has a strong sense of justice. A politically engaged film will interest this thoughtful diplomatically minded sign. Two Distant Strangers (2020) is a short film starring rapper Joey Bada$$ that will give Libra plenty to chew on. Carter, played by Bada$$, just wants to get home to his dog after sleeping over at the house of his date. However, he mysteriously ends up in a time loop with a cop that has it out for him. This film examines the deaths of Black Americans during encounters with police and is an important one that everyone should watch.

Scorpio

23^rd October – 21^st November

A complex sign Scorpios are passionate yet persistent, loyal but strategic, and will enjoy a film with a complex main character like themselves. Miss Congeniality (2000) is a silly makeover chick flick that will lighten the heart of the toughest Scorpio. Gracie Hart, a tomboyish tough detective, is forced to infiltrate the Miss United States beauty pageant as a contestant after her department learns that the event is under threat from an anonymous bomber. It’s the classic trope – Sandra Bullock takes her hair down, puts some makeup and a dress on, and suddenly what do you know she’s pretty. You’ll be hooked throughout this action-comedy film with a hint of romance.

Sagittarius

22^nd November to 21^st December

Freedom-adoring and laughter-loving Sagittarius needs an off-the-wall film that will fill their quota for adventure. Charlie’s Angels (2000) is that film. Featuring plenty of eye candy with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore all starring in this kitschy and charming spy classic. Sagittarius will be thrilled by the great dialogue, array of stunning costumes and beauty moments, fabulous action sequences, and the dash of romance. We came for the fits and the stars and stayed to watch Lucy Liu kick Crispin Glover’s scrawny ass.

Capricorn

22^nd December – 19^th January

Overachieving Capricorns with their persistent spirit yet sensitive nature will definitely see themselves in Elle Woods. Legally Blonde (2001) is now considered a modern classic in the rom-com genre. When Elle gets dumped for a more serious girl she proves to her ex, the world, and herself how smart she is by joining Harvard Law School. This fiercely feminist film fights back against the idea being feminine and smart are mutually exclusive showing that you can rock a pink dress in court.

Aquarius

20^th January – 18^th February 

Matching to the beat of their own drum, the original and creative Aquarius require a film that will keep them on their toes. A great pick for an Aquarius movie night is Showgirls (1995): a fast-paced pulp noir about the dangerous rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle of showgirls in Las Vegas. Full of controversy of the amount of nudity in the film it bombed at the box office but has since gained cult status – it’s perfect for the boundary-pushing Aquarius.

Pisces

19^th February – 20^th March 

Light-hearted playful films will appeal to Pisces who are empathetic, romantic, intuitive, and mostly importantly dreamers. In Always Be My Maybe (2019) celebrity chef Sasha and her childhood sweetheart Marcus reunite just as Sasha breaks off her engagement. Sasha has always wondered whether Marcus is the one – could it be a case of right person wrong time or will their lack of honesty with each other drive another wedge between them? This sweet tale starring Ali Wong, Randall Park, and Keanu Reeves (?!) will have every Pisces feeling mushy.

Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (2021)

American musician, record producer, and filmmaker Questlove revealed to many a remarkable part of black history that had been previously glossed over with his documentary Summer of Soul. The concert film weaves together beautiful footage from the free Harlem Music Festival that took place over six weeks in 1961 with interviews from the people who attended and performed, who look back fondly over 50 years later.

It features soul-healing performances for Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, The 5th Dimension, The Staple Singers, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mavis Staples, Sly and the Family Stone, and The Chambers Brothers. Summer of Soul is a touching celebration of the amazing fashion, music, and culture in Harlem as well as an important political film that touches on race, class, and legacy.

Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (2018)

Fans, haters, and curious views are given an insight into the multi-faceted controversial but undeniably talented singer M.I.A. in this documentary that spans over 22 years of the rapper’s life. Documenting her rise to fame, her own perspective on her controversies, public appearances, her political activism, and her identity as an East Asian woman, the viewer gains a better grasp of who Maya Arulpragasam is through the course of the film. The eccentric star is mesmerising in this critically acclaimed documentary that won World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award at Sundance 2018.

Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991)

Madonna: Truth or Dare is an important chapter in pop culture with many other documentaries, parodies, and reality TV shows taking notes from the film. It’s still one of the highest-grossing documentaries ever made. The film provides a deep look at Madonna’s relationships with her crew, then-boyfriend Warren Beatty, family, and friends whilst on her Blonde Ambition tour. Edited in a moody black-and-white whilst the performances are left in radiant colour, it’s a visually stunning film as well as an illuminating one. All hail the queen of pop.

Homecoming (2019)

Beyoncé’s self-directed, written, and produced concert film on the performance held in 2018 at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is the music documentary to end all music docs. Receiving widespread critical acclaim, with some even saying it’s one of the greatest concert films of all time, it won Best Music Film at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards and Best Music Documentary at the IDA Documentary Awards 2019. Beyoncé grants the audience an inside look at how she takes a concept, revises, rehearses, and creates a cultural moment that will be remembered throughout history. If you need some inspiration in your life watch now.

Amy (2015)

Sparking heavy criticism from Amy Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, Amy pulls archival footage and personal testimonials to piece together a heart-wrenching but tender story of a talented beauty who departed too soon. Critically acclaimed yet controversial, everyone will have a different take on Amy which gives a portrait of the life and career of the British singer as she struggles with addiction, fame, the media, and her family. RIP Amy.

Dave Chappelle’s Block Party(2005)

A wild unpredictable shambolic funfest from start to finish Dave Chappelle’s Block Party follows comedian Chappelle during the summer of 2004 as he throws a block party in the Clinton Hill neighbourhood of Brooklyn. The free rap show in Brooklyn featured Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, The Roots, and briefly reunited The Fugees. If you like amazing rap performances, hip hop, and a lot of guerrilla marketing through megaphones it’s the one for you.

Gaga: Five Foot Two (2017)

We see a softer side to the formidable pop icon Gaga in Gaga: Five Foot Two. The documentary follows Gaga in 2016 through the lead-up to Joanna and her Superbowl performance. From interactions with her fans, her struggles with chronic pain, intel into her feud with Madonna, the filming of American Horror Story: Roanoke, and her home life, there’s nothing that’s off the table in this unguarded revealing documentary.

Miss Americana(2020)

Megastar Taylor Swift comes off as personable, smart, and down-to-earth in this emotional revealing documentary filmed over several years of the singer’s life. Starting from her Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018 it follows her journey up to her seventh studio album Lover in 2019. Tackling sensitive subjects with strength and grace such as her battle with body dysmorphia, her mother’s cancer diagnosis, the toxic internet culture, her sexual assault trial, self-esteem issues, and her decision to go public with her political views, Swift shows why she is an incredible role model for all young women.

Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me (2022)

A must-see for every Selenators or anyone who grew up watching the star on Wizards of Waverley Place. The documentary follows Selena Gomez through a six-year period of her career and reveals her struggles with fame and physical and mental well-being in the wake of her diagnosis with lupus and bipolar disorder. Praised for its mental health transparency the film is a raw and vulnerable look into the mind and life of Gomez. Emotional but ultimately uplifting – pass the tissues.

The Upcoming Rihanna Documentary(2023 – hopefully!)

With over 1,000 hours of footage filmed over six and a half years, it’s no surprise that the editing of this documentary has taken so long and is still a work in progress. With the footage providing an up-close look at the rise of Rihanna’s billion-dollar empire Fenty, the singer at work in the studio, her relationship with Rocky, and RiRi’s experiences of new motherhood, we cannot wait to see it. It’s recently been sold to Amazon so hopefully we’ll be to watch soon.

Sharper

We all love to watch the incredibly rich and beautiful bring about their own downfall through deception and hubris – it’s human nature. Sharper is the brand-new psychological drama produced by Apple TV and A24 about a small upper-class family that is ripped apart when the very sleazy Max begins conning those around him. Though golden globe, BAFTA, and Emmy-winning director Benjamin Caron has directed several episodes of gripping TV shows such as Sherlock and The Crown, Sharper is his feature film directorial debut. With the film boasting Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, John Lithgow, and Justice Smith in its cast there’s no shortage of crafty characters to keep your attention.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance

Treat yourself and your mates to a late Valentine’s present and go watch some sexy sweaty men strip it all off at the cinema. The third instalment of the Magic Mike series sees our old flame Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) taking the stage again after a lengthy hiatus. Broke after a dodgy business deal goes bust Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite (Salma Hayek) to perform one last job – and this time it’s at the West End. Director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, Kimi, Magic Mike) caters to the female gaze in this sultry yet heartfelt tale that will leave you feel warm and fuzzy. With oodles of sexual tension, shiny abs, and a killer soundtrack – what more could you ask for in a flick?

By now everyone is familiar with Joe Goldberg’s creepy antics and psychotic tendencies. He’s quickly become a cult figure in the thriller genre with his eerie internal monologue inspiring parodies online and his infamous baseball cap providing lazy men with an easy last-minute Halloween costume. Last week, the first part of the fourth season of the Netflix original was brought to streaming proving popular with fans who have it trending at number one on Netflix. Since the mayhem of last season, Joe has been hiding out in London under a new identity professor Jonathan Moore. He attempts not to blow his cover but falls in with a crowd of wealthy “douchebags”. As the ‘Eat the Rich Killer’ starts attacking Joe’s friends and him losing the struggle to keep his obsessive nature under wraps, how long can Joe remain undetected this time? Part two of season four comes out in March so those who haven’t watch the show yet have plenty of time to catch up.

The Last of Us

Even if you haven’t seen The Last of Us you will have encountered the buzz that surrounds the show. The American HBO post-apocalyptic drama based on the 2013 video game of the same name has been driving fans of the game, Sci-Fi lovers, and TikTok-edit-making Petro Pascal stans wild. Incredibly intense, action-packed, and with the very sweet relationship surrogate father-daughter relationship between the two protagonists we totally get why it’s causing a stir. Set in 2023, a global pandemic caused by a climate-change-induced fungal infection transforms people into zombie-like creatures. In the collapsed society Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler escorts teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the dangerous plains of the United States. With episodes dropping every Monday HBO is keeping us tantalised for every new instalment. Season two was given the green light after only one episode out of the nine had been aired – it just goes to show the show’s popularity.

The Peripheral

If you didn’t get around to watching The Peripheral last year now is a great time to do so. Recently we’ve seen a rise in VR-centred Sci-Fi with films such as Don’t Worry Darling, Ready Player One, and Belle, all warning us of the dangers of the technological advancement whilst providing hair-raising, twisted entertainment. The Peripheral delivers an action-packed punch and at only 8 episodes long it’s totally bingeable. Set a decade in the future a VR gamer (Chloë Grace Moretz) connects to an alternate reality and a troubling future of her own. Moretz transformation from the girl-next-door in North Carolina to a spy wrapped up in a web of mystery in London is thrilling to watch. You’ll find yourself immersed inthe stunning special effect and enthralling story.

Lily Rose Depp and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye star in this very messed up romantic drama set in Hollywood. Created by Tesfaye and the mastermind behind Euphoria, Sam Levison, we’re expecting that this gritty drama will show us the glamour of stardom as well as reveal the dark underbelly of Tinseltown. The show is produced by A24 who have brought us some of the best films of last year such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Whale, X, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and Aftersun.

The show’s been in development since 2021 but it was revealed (perhaps accidentally!) by HBO’s Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys in a livestream during the Global Demand Awards that after the fourth season of The Succession we can expect to receive The Idol on our screens. As The Succession season four will run until the end of May we’re hoping The Weeknd’s brainchild will premiere in sometime in June.

The HBO original focuses on Jocelyn, played by Depp, a gorgeous young pop idol struggling to reclaim her title as the sexiest star in America after a nervous breakdown causes her last tour to be cancelled. When the mysterious and enigmatic self-help guru Tedros, played by the Weeknd, catches her eye in a club, the two embark on a fiery love affair, which will either save them or break them (our money’s on break).

Musician Troye Sivan, star of Shiva Baby and Bodies Bodies Bodies Rachel Sennott, rising actress Suzanna Son, Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy, and BLACKPINK‘s Jennie (in her acting debut) will all play a part in bringing The Idol to life.

In an interview with Elle last November, Depp said the biggest challenge when embodying Jocelyn was “understanding how alone you can feel, even when everybody’s watching you”. Pop idols Madonna, Britney Spears, and Mariah Carey were all used as reference points for Depp’s transformation. The actress also said she felt blessed to be working with Levinson and Tesfaye who are, “two people who make me feel incredibly safe and protected”. She called Tesfaye, “a really good friend who’s had my back”, saying, “We’ve gone on this wild ride together. It was a first for both of us in a lot of ways”.

So far, the three teaser trailer suggests the show will be packed with flashy convertibles, bright lights, sparkling mansions, slinky outfits, plenty of booze, sexy strip teases, many many drugs, and a crazy amount of sexual tension between the two leads. So basically, everything we love in a TV show. June can’t come soon enough.
