Well before coronavirus turned our world upside down, foundation shopping (and shade matching) was a tricky business. Different finishes, strengths of pigment, and a kaleidoscope of undertones; getting it right can feel like a maze and It has been known to challenge casual buyers and make-up professionals alike. Even YouTube icon James Charles has admitted that he has battled to find a perfect foundation match.

Finding My PERFECT Foundation Match… Finally

Relying on online swatches for the likes of eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks is (for the most part) a safe gamble but traditionally foundation shopping requires a closer inspection in- store. We’ve all done the classic trick of applying a tester swatch and running out the store to quickly catch a view of the shade in natural lighting but in a post-coronavirus world, it seems make-up testers are set to become a thing of the past. The hygiene of beauty testers has frequently been called into question and parting with them IS in the interest of public health but now, how do we go about finding our perfect shade?

Identifying Undertones

‘Find your undertone’ is a phrase passed around a lot in the beauty world but let’s start by explaining what an undertone actually is. An undertone is a tone/colour that underlies your skin and there are three to choose from – warm (yellow and gold), cool (pink and blue), and neutral (a mix of both warm and cool). Knowing your undertone will make the whole process of online foundation shopping much easier and convenient, many brands indicate the undertones of a foundation within the shade name, typically represented by the first letter of the undertone – W, C, or N.

There are plenty of tricks to decode which undertone you personally have. A classic example is to take a glance at the colour of your veins. Experts suggest that blue-toned veins indicate a cool tone whereas green suggests a warmer tone. Similarly, trying on gold and silver jewellery can give a helpful insight into skin undertones. If you glow in gold, then you may sway towards a warm undertone or perhaps you shine in silver in which case, cooler tones could be your perfect match. Or maybe you love both (us too!), so neutral tones are your preference.

For the most part, a good bare-faced look in the mirror in natural lighting can offer a fair indication of what your undertone is but If in doubt, selecting a neutral shade is the safest bet for creating a well-matched base.

Selecting the Right Shade

Very fair, fair, light, light medium, medium, dark, very dark – feeling overwhelmed? It’s a lot simpler than it seems and far more obvious than deciphering undertones. These are the descriptors typically used by a wide range of make-up brands and luckily, once you crack which shade you are in one brand, it’s a safe conclusion that you’ll probably be the same in another.

Websites often offer a clear description of the shades and some have even introduced photos of models corresponding to each foundation colour which enables you to easily compare your own skin to a model of a similar shade; making colour matching almost as visual as being in the physical store.

Read Reviews

Never underestimate the importance of reading reviews from fellow shoppers. While many brands will claim their foundation is the key to achieving flawless skin, customer reviews allow us to see which products are really up to scratch away from the biases of Instagram advertisements and YouTube sponsorships.

Coverage, longevity and how it feels on the skin – these are all things that are commented on in reviews and they are important qualities worth investigating before committing to an online purchase. If you are sceptical of reviews on brand sites then there are online forums such as MakeupAlley which offer a wide range of honest and fair reviews.

Take a Brand Quiz

Luckily, many brands such as Too Faced, BareMinerals and Maybelline have noticed a rise in online foundation shopping and in turn, have created clever quizzes to match their potential customers to their perfect foundation. Answering just a handful of questions on their sites will help their algorithm suggest a good foundation for your skin type, desired coverage and the ideal shade for you too. How fancy?

Findation.com is a project that launched in 2012 and it is taking all the hard work out of onlinefoundation matching. Utilising their enormous database of shades, Findation allows you to enter two foundation shades that you have used and loved before from a range of brands. From there, their clever search engine can curate a list of shades from other beauty brands of a similar tone and colour that are set to match you perfectly.

The humble tank top; the versatile sleeveless staple that can so effortlessly take us from the gym to the shops, to a night out (obviously with a wash and a few styling tweaks in-between- but you get the point!). In the current climate, shopping is now a distant happy, memory and nights out are the things of dreams.

Though many of the world’s dedicated lovers of fashion might currently be feeling slightly distraught; all this time to think about and plan outfits down to the very last detail – and literally NOWHERE to go. It shouldn’t stop us at least trying, even if it is only for a 20-minute chat with the head of the department. We have all heard of 15 seconds of fame. What about 15 seconds to fame; TikTok the App formally known as Musical.ly has managed to take brands from obscurity to viral brands. TikTok is a video-sharing app where users can create and share 15-second videos. Unlike the former, musical.ly, the app does not only focus on lip-syncing but also a variety of different content; anything from choreographed dances to makeup tutorials this and the popularity of the app has proved an asset to brands when it comes to product placement and promotion.

American clothing brand, Guess, has used the app to their benefit, creating the hashtag campaign. They asked popular TikTok users to post transformation videos of them going from dishevelled to glamorous (wearing Guess apparel). Due to the high number of followers these famous TikTok’ers had, many users copied the video idea and got the hashtag trending- a major boost in recognising the Guess brand.

Another brand that has come out even more popular than before, thanks to TikTok, is cosmetic brand, Too Faced. 6 years after the release of their ‘Lip injection extreme plumping lip gloss’, sales were rising, with the product selling out. They eventually found out that the product was going viral on TikTok after a challenge saw users showing off the plumping effects of the gloss with before and after videos. The company took advantage of this and encouraged TikTok influencers to show off their new mascara in the same way, and it definitely worked, generating 821 million views on their hashtag .

Many other brands are using TikTok to promote new products and campaigns, these include Fenty, Sephora and even American food chain, Chipotle. Elf Cosmetics even commissioned a song for their TikTok campaign, called Eyes, Lips, Face, (after the brand name’s acronym).

Using the power of TikTok influencers, the brand now has 3.8 billion (yes, BILLION) videos using their hashtag.

Charli D’Amelio, arguably the biggest thing to come out of TikTok, has graced our screens with her simple, yet flawless videos of her choreographed dances to songs no one had heard before. Users all over the app jumped on the trend and danced to unfamiliar songs.

Songs such as

• Lottery- K Camp

• Say so- Doja Cat

• Candy- Doja Cat

• The Box- Roddy Ricch

• Roxanne- Arizona Zervas

Have been made more popular by their use in TikTok videos, many accompanied by a well-thought-out dance routine that influencers on the app made famous and got trending. Their catchy tune and relatable lyrics also make for great memes, giving videos more of a 2013 ‘vine’ vibe, which was also an app for short videos, often used for funny content (RIP Vine 2013-2017). These songs have made it onto top music charts in the UK, as well as the USA, due to their recognition and popularity on the app.

The app with over 500 million users mainly teenagers, has been a platform for creatives to display their talents as it is not limited to music. Although the main demographic is teenagers more and more adults seem to enjoy the app making videos under popular hashtags. Considering the current world climate the TikTok app seems like a great way to release some creative energy indoors.

Base

1). We’re going to start this at the very beginning with your primer; Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturiser & Primer £44.50 for 50ml. An absolute beauty this one is – it works as a moisturiser and primer and is so unbelievably nourishing on the skin, not to mention it will keep your make-up dewy and on your skin all day.

2). Next, layer on the iconic Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation £42, an oil-free, lightweight and so-silky-you-could-die foundation. Super buildable and applies seamless, no wonder this is the Artist’s Choice 10 years in a row!

3). A winner as always is YSL Touche Eclat High Coverage Concealer £26; So, this isn’t the regular one everyone has dribbled over for years, that one was actually marketed as just a highlighter whereas this one is predominantly a high coverage concealer. You still get the beautiful luminosity of the OG Touche, but also a weightless and long wear concealer… really struggling to find a flaw here.

4). If that wasn’t illuminating enough for you so far, I’ve only just begun! Add even more glow with the YSL Touche Eclat Shimmer Stick £27. Cream/liquid products are really going to make your cheeks extra dewy as they catch the light super easily. This stick highlight comes in 5 different shades, my fav being the gorgeous champagne ‘Light Gold’, I mean just go into a store and swatch this on your hand it genuinely might be the prettiest thing I have ever seen. (Prove me wrong, I dare you!!) I mean the actual product has all the good stuff: easy to blend, super creamy and a lightweight texture. TBH, if you like a shimmery bronzer, you can easily use a darker shade to add some warmth to your skin.

5). Totally changes the game: NARS Orgasm Liquid Blush £25. I mean NARS’ ‘Orgasm’ range is iconic, we all know and adore it…this is just in a lightweight liquid form so it’s just another staple to add to the dewy trend.

6). Lastly for the base, slap on that Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray £24 to make sure your base doesn’t move all day…whatever your activity is. I’ve heard great things about this setting spray being 100% sex-proof; you can be the judge of that.

Eyes and Lips

1). Keeping with this gorgeous healthy glowy skin trend, Charlotte Tilbury Bigger Brighter Eyes Palette ‘Exagger-Eyes’ £40. OK, I know you’re thinking it’s a little pricey for 4 shadows, but honey if you just knew what these bad boys were capable of! All you have to do is watch one of those CT adverts I was talking about. Nuff said. I mean they’re just everything: buttery, pigmented, the product itself is just such amazing quality it’s insane! You’ll thank me.

2). The current brow trend is messy, undone and natural; easy as pie, brush up your brows with the tinted Benefit Cosmetics Gimmie Brow+ £22.50 for a full and put together bro duo that takes literally seconds.

3). You need to keep them hooked on your eyes…the only way is to add a sultry liner on your waterline. A black liner on the waterline is so sexy it really draws you to the eyes; even I give myself a double-take when I whack some on. My fav is Estee Lauder Double Wear Waterproof Eyeliner ‘Noir’ £19, just glides on the eyes so easily and stays all day. Even great for contact wearers like myself.

4). To finish the eyes off, add some famous Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara £22 (TBH if your flying solo this V day, this mascara is supposedly better than sex, and if you have a partner, you’re going to need that waterproof one…win win). Volumizing without being too clumpy, and it deff won’t transfer on your lids or under eye.

5). Last but certainly not least, chuck on some Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick ‘Glowing Jen’ £28. This was actually named after Jennifer Aniston and I believe a portion of the money for this collection goes to charity. Moisturising and so pretty and glowy oh my goodness it’s insane.

The winter months can be incredibly harsh on your skin, with many experiencing dryness, sensitivity and breakouts once the initial coldness hits. Sub-zero temperatures and pesky spots may make you want to curl up in a ball at times, but with the countdown to Christmas well under way- there simply isn’t time to hibernate.

The party season can be a huge stress to your mind and body.
