Here are a selection of fashion savvy accounts you need to follow for the best inspiration throughout this season from knitted jumpers to dresses. 

Tik Tok influencer @Laurencandy is worth a follow as just by glancing at her account you can see the aesthetically pleasing layout of her content as well as the carefully thought-out outfits matching the current trends of autumn. With almost 20k follower’s Lauren is an up-and-coming fashion account to watch out for as videos are posted daily exploring what different brands are offering. Here are some of her best styled autumn outfits. 

As seen below oversized knits and knee-high boots are the go-to this year, creating a cosy but glamorous look – who thought that you would be able to do both!

Another Tik Tok influencer who is filling us with outfit inspiration is the account @tayhage. With over 1 million followers she is the person you know you can rely on for fashion tips. Recently her Autumnal wardrobe has consisted of more basic colours but has styled it in a chic way, for example through a bodycon knitted midi dress paired with a leather blazer and a saddle bag.

Now onto a ‘tiktoker’ whose wardrobe screams colour and will definitely brighten up these darker months of Autumn! It’s @HelenaCritchley whose wardrobe features an array of bright coloured knits and the layering essentials, what more could you want!

If you’ve been anywhere near an internet connection during the past year, then you have more than likely heard of TikTok. With 850 million downloads making it the most popular app of 2020, TikTok has reached a golden status previously only awarded to the likes of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

TikTok follows in the footsteps of its predecessors through its ability to enable creatives to be seen and heard within a global community; users are able to create a sixty-second video about anything they choose, which they can then post for anyone on the app to see. While this may not be a ground-breaking concept, its simplicity is favoured by TikTok’s inclusive algorithm – meaning even the smallest accounts can go viral in just hours.

The fashion world has always been open to new trends and cultural shifts, so to see various parts of the industry embracing the world’s new favourite app is not unexpected. However, it can probably be said that no one anticipated just how much the app would change the landscape of fashion – and for the better, too.

But how exactly has TikTok changed the way we see and consume fashion? Find out below.

Getting to Know Designers as People

Brands are constantly seeking new ways to connect with consumers, and designers are no different. Whether viral challenges, process videos, or the ins and outs of running a business, the opportunities for marketing a brand appear endless. It’s also a great way for lesser-known designers to get their name out there amongst the masses. Independent designers such as Gunnar Deatherage (@gunnardeatherage) create BTS videos that give insight into their practice as well as their personality, allowing audiences to connect with these figures more directly. Rather than going through a look book, you can get a step-by-step run-through from a designer on how they moved from an idea to a final product. Even big names like Gucci are picking up on the marketing tactics of TikTok, having jumped on the #GucciModelChallenge bandwagon by reposting users’ videos on their page; the hashtag itself has amassed over 248.1 million views as of March 2021.

Democratising Our Understanding of Fashion

Many accounts have picked up on TikTok’s capabilities as an educational resource, using the sixty-second window to deliver punchy fact videos on specific topics. Fashion TikTok is no exception to the trend, having produced countless accounts dedicated to the history of fashion as well as current trends and designers. Jasmine Chiswell (@jasminechiswell) is known for the former category; the Marilyn Monroe lookalike can be seen creating 50’s-inpired styling videos that expand on the history of certain fashion staples and beauty

products. Accounts like Culted (@culted), on the other hand, traverse the landscape of contemporary fashion, analysing recent shows, discussing cultural influences, and infusing its commentaries with approachable humour. In doing so, these accounts make fashion, both past and present, more accessible to a global audience than ever before.

In the days prior to COVID-19, events and shows were held at remote venues with limited audience numbers. Globalised lockdown measures have meant that many brands have had to go digital (if they hadn’t already before), and the short video layout of TikTok has proved a more than suitable platform for posting the highlights of seasonal shows. With Fashion Week winding down its second series of online shows, it’s become more essential for events organisers and brands to cultivate a strong online following. Fashion has taken the challenge head-on, with brands like Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Saint Laurent taking to live-streaming their shows on the app, making their events and collections more accessible to the public. Rather than a shiny VIP pass, all you need nowadays is TikTok and a good Wi-Fi connection.

Opening the Networking Door Beyond Design and Modelling

While TikTok has been known to be advantageous for both designers and models, it’s also become a great resource for aspiring fashion writers and editors. Many young people can feel anxious or lost when it comes to starting a career in fashion journalism, but those already working in the industry have begun to create content that illustrates their experiences of getting to where they are now. TikTok personalities like Bella Gerard (@bellagerard), Austen Tosone (@austentosone), Tara Gonzalez (@taramariagonzalez), and Rebecca Shinners (@shinnersss) are great examples of accounts that aim to break down the editorial side of the fashion industry. These accounts have made TikTok a space that allows aspiring fashion journalists to find role models they can reach out to, while illustrating a more realistic depiction of what the industry is like.

Leading the Way for Sustainable Businesses

It’s no secret that younger generations are leading the way on sustainable practices, often taking to social media to raise awareness of certain issues. Over 60% of TikTok users are thought to be Gen Z, meaning they dominate a lot of the content the app produces. Much of this content centres around educating audiences on (and finding resolutions for) climate change, sustainability, and ethical practices. In terms of fashion, you can find many videos on TikTok that offer alternatives to fast fashion and waste – from where to go thrifting and how to upcycle your old clothes, to challenges like the denim bleaching and transforming bedsheets into dresses. TikTok’s favouring of small, independent businesses is also crucial to this wave of awareness, as it supports practices that are often grounded in slow and ethical manufacturing. If you’re like any of us (glued to your phone 24/7), then you’ve likely seen a certain trend creep onto your feed more than once since December: Royalcore. Following the success of fashion sub-categories such as Y2K, Cottagecore, and Dark Academia in 2020, Royalcore came onto the scene under the guidance of the Netflix series Bridgerton.

Royalcore focusses on any and all things royal in aesthetic, from Kings and Queens to Knights, Princes, and Princesses. However, the strands of Royalcore that you see mostly on social media right now are Princesscore and Regencycore, the latter of which was birthed directly as a result of the Bridgerton craze. As of March 2021, #Royalcore has racked up an impressive 80.7 million views TikTok alone.

Based on the visuals of Western European royalty, Royalcore fashion is all about the characteristic styling elements that were historically limited to royalty (and later the very wealthy). Sumptuary laws had been used for centuries to regulate the way we consume certain fabrics and colours, meaning that they could be explicitly associated with the upper echelons of society. Fabrics like silk, velvet, and taffeta as well as vibrant and metallic colours were reserved for royalty, becoming synonymous with luxury and rank.

But enough with the history lesson. Where does this leave the Royalcore trend today?

Princesscore

Royalcore takes inspiration from both historical and fictional characters, and Princesscore is no different. Whether real life or Disney princess, the Princesscore trend’s sole intention is to emulate the grace, delicacy, and aesthetics of a youthful royal.

Princesscore is recognisable through its emphasis of floor-length dresses, flowing fabrics, lace, and the much-loved corset. However, the beauty of the aesthetic lies in the multiple time periods it can quote, emphasise, and even mix. The allowance for interpretation has already created small sub-genres within Princesscore, including “light” (pastels, white, gold) and “dark” (black, deep red, gothic accents) versions. The possibilities are truly endless.

In terms of accessories, no true Princesscore fanatic would be seen without a crown or diadem. Paired with pearls, gloves, and diamonds (or close enough), the crown is a central staple of the royal renaissance.

Social media has allowed followers of the Princesscore trend to build up a massive following in a short space of time. Users who predate the current boom are Jordan Brown (@hellomissjordan) and Porsha Hall (@porsharenaehall), who provide a masterclass in both the fashion aesthetics and the princess-y mannerisms of the trend.

Emily Brenn (@embrenn365), dubbed the TikTok Princess by locals, interweaves all the elegance of crowns and gowns with the comedic personality traits of a feminist princess. Her wardrobe of royal goods is often used to offset the rougher commentaries of her audio,

creating little skits that would make even the grumpiest of lords chuckle.

Regencycore

A strand of Princesscore which has gotten a lot of attention recently is Regencycore, which as the name suggests is loosely based around the Regency Era of the early 1810’s. Rather than stick to royalty, however, the Regencycore trend encompasses multiple aesthetics from high society.

As mentioned, the growth of Regencycore is indebted to the popularity of Bridgerton, which promoted fashion staples like elbow-length gloves, empire line dresses, and capped sleeves. According to an analysis by Lyst, the impact of period sources like Bridgerton saw online searches for corsets and pearls spike by 123% and 49% respectively, putting the Regencycore trend on the virtual map.

TikTok again appears to be a hub for development, showing how Regencycore fans have adapted the trend to their own aesthetic. Two main trends stand out for their prioritisation of either excessive embellishment or historical accuracy (although these can sometimes overlap). TikTok users Lama (@shawty.arabia) and Asta Darling (@asta.darling) are recent leaders in the Regencycore trend, using their platforms to document the process of making (often Bridgerton-inspired) gowns and accessories. Lama’s pastel creation highlights all the delicate detailing that made period costumes a hit, while Darling’s various gowns play on historical narratives and settings.

The demand for Royalcore is high, but not everyone has the means to make themselves a ballgown. We have all heard of 15 seconds of fame. What about 15 seconds to fame; TikTok the App formally known as Musical.ly has managed to take brands from obscurity to viral brands. TikTok is a video-sharing app where users can create and share 15-second videos. Unlike the former, musical.ly, the app does not only focus on lip-syncing but also a variety of different content; anything from choreographed dances to makeup tutorials this and the popularity of the app has proved an asset to brands when it comes to product placement and promotion.

American clothing brand, Guess, has used the app to their benefit, creating the hashtag campaign. They asked popular TikTok users to post transformation videos of them going from dishevelled to glamorous (wearing Guess apparel). Due to the high number of followers these famous TikTok’ers had, many users copied the video idea and got the hashtag trending- a major boost in recognising the Guess brand.

Another brand that has come out even more popular than before, thanks to TikTok, is cosmetic brand, Too Faced. 6 years after the release of their ‘Lip injection extreme plumping lip gloss’, sales were rising, with the product selling out. They eventually found out that the product was going viral on TikTok after a challenge saw users showing off the plumping effects of the gloss with before and after videos. The company took advantage of this and encouraged TikTok influencers to show off their new mascara in the same way, and it definitely worked, generating 821 million views on their hashtag .

Many other brands are using TikTok to promote new products and campaigns, these include Fenty, Sephora and even American food chain, Chipotle. Elf Cosmetics even commissioned a song for their TikTok campaign, called Eyes, Lips, Face, (after the brand name’s acronym).

Using the power of TikTok influencers, the brand now has 3.8 billion (yes, BILLION) videos using their hashtag.

Charli D’Amelio, arguably the biggest thing to come out of TikTok, has graced our screens with her simple, yet flawless videos of her choreographed dances to songs no one had heard before. Users all over the app jumped on the trend and danced to unfamiliar songs.

• The Box- Roddy Ricch

• Roxanne- Arizona Zervas

Have been made more popular by their use in TikTok videos, many accompanied by a well-thought-out dance routine that influencers on the app made famous and got trending. Their catchy tune and relatable lyrics also make for great memes, giving videos more of a 2013 ‘vine’ vibe, which was also an app for short videos, often used for funny content (RIP Vine 2013-2017). These songs have made it onto top music charts in the UK, as well as the USA, due to their recognition and popularity on the app.

The app with over 500 million users mainly teenagers, has been a platform for creatives to display their talents as it is not limited to music. Although the main demographic is teenagers more and more adults seem to enjoy the app making videos under popular hashtags. Considering the current world climate the TikTok app seems like a great way to release some creative energy indoors.
