Let’s begin with the first thing you need to start your day – cleanser. CeraVe’s popularity skyrocketed after skincare expert Hyram expressed his love for the brand. Fans rushed to their local drugstores to pick up as many of these products as possible. The SA Smoothing Cleanser is perfect for controlling breakouts and oily skin.

The product is quite reasonably priced, too. Who knew that the answer to all our problems would only cost us £12.50 at Boots?

So many influencers have expressed their love for this product and shared their transformations since they started using it. A notable example includes Dr Muneeb Shah, better known as @dermdoctor on TikTok. He showed his 17 million followers how to pick the perfect Cerave cleanser for each specific type of skin and has continuously expressed his love for the product.

E.L.F Poreless Putty Primer

This gorgeous blurring primer has become incredibly popular on TikTok, with creators showing just how airbrushed their makeup looked after using it. All of the social media hype eventually led to it becoming the No. 1 primer in the United States. To celebrate, E.L.F Cosmetics started a TikTok challenge, encouraging beauty gurus to post videos using the primer for the chance to with a free primer and be featured on their page. Creators like Leilani Green and Victoria Lyn are among some of the lucky winners of the challenge.

The product is an absolute godsend for makeup lovers with textured skin and pores. Because of the putty formula, it also mattifies the face, unlike gel primers which usually produce a greasier look. After application, the product makes the skin slightly tacky and sticky – which is a sign of a great primer. Your makeup will be fully locked in for the full day – and for only £9, who can complain?

Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush

We don’t think this product really needs any introduction. It’s been plastered all over TikTok and Instagram and beauty gurus are obsessed with this formula. Simply being attached to Selena Gomez’s name made it easy for this brand to take over the makeup industry. Selena herself has over 55 million followers on TikTok, so every time she posts anything to do with her makeup brand, it inevitably goes viral. She also sat down with Vogue to record a Beauty Secrets video in 2020 (which now has 15 million views), in which she showcases using the liquid blush in her favourite shade – Joy.

After seeing how stunning the formula looked on Selena, fans were quick to rush to her website and try out the product. The glowy blush has been seen looking absolutely gorgeous on so many influencers of all skin tones and genders. Rare Beauty’s Global Stylist, Cynthia De Meo’s “blushing from within” technique soon went viral with TikTokers like Glamzilla and Nidal Kabashi hopping on the trend to create a stunning subtle blush look. This super lightweight, blendable blush seems to have a pretty strong hold on the beauty industry.

MACStack Mascara

If you’ve been dying for some ultra-luscious lashes, we’d highly recommend the MACStack Mascara. This product went viral for good reason – it doesn’t clump, it’s lightweight and it gives your lashes that fuller look. Now that our faces are looking all glowy and airbrushed, let’s sort out the hair situation. The Dyson Airwrap comes with several attachments to customise your hair styling. Let’s just ignore the hefty price tag for now, and discuss what we’re getting – a Coanda smoothing dryer, a 30mm barrel, a 40mm barrel, a soft smoothing brush, a firm smoothing brush and a round
volumising brush.

The product initially went viral for how unbelievably satisfying and effortless the styling process was. It uses a phenomenon called the Coanda Effect to automatically wrap the hair around the barrel while curling. It also doesn’t expose the hair to extreme heat, making it a lot less damaging to the hair than regular hair curlers and straighteners. Influencers like Sophie Murray have taken to their social platforms to show how they use their Dyson Airwrap, with these videos garnering hundreds of thousands of views.

]]> Succeeding the recent late-2022 release of her album SOS to all streaming platforms, SZA ends her hiatus and embarks on an artfully emotive climb into the lyrical stratosphere once more, following her break after the release of her 2017 album Ctrl. 

Her new album continually sits at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, holding its position for three weeks already as the top new album release. She also sits in the second spot for Billboard’s Artist 100 and is noted as having the hottest R&B song at the moment. Truly a testament to her phenomenally poetic lyricisms and industry-norm subversions.  

SOS assumedly sits within the landscape as an R&B/alt R&B album, however, SZA’s influences prove to stem from a variety of genres making the album an eclectic blend of sounds – with songs rooted in pop punk, rap and ballad-like pop music. 

Her confessional lyrics and soulful initiative to the genre have made SOS a prolific album of 2022 despite its late release in the year. 

SZA tells the Rolling Stones in a podcast interview for Rolling Stone Music Now that she was pejoratively apprehensive to release her album to the public, with fears in the reception of her as an artist – as a non-conformist creator in a rapid-fire strictly-traditional industry. 

Her fears can ultimately be debunked in the actuality of the reception of the album. Songs like ‘Kill Bill’ currently sit at around 150 million streams on Spotify, despite only being out since December. Surely this is indication enough that public appraisal was indeed laudatory?

The reverent adoration for her new album has virally sent it to platforms like TikTok, with snippets from her newly released songs as the backing to transitional trends/ and emerging new lyric-related trends, e.g. ‘Good Days’, ‘I Hate U’ and ‘Kill Bill’ have all generated a mass hype on the platform. It is apparent that the emotion behind the lyrics “I might kill my ex, not the best idea, his new girlfriend’s next, how’d I get here” within ‘Kill Bill’ has prompted a trend in which people lip sync to the audio. The viral capabilities of platforms like TikTok have meant the continual relevance of SZA’s album in the charts. 

A viral video that surfaced recently was a TikTok vox pop with an elderly woman in the subway somewhere in the US, she is asked to name her favourite new album and she speaks fondly of SOS and specifically the heart-wrenching meaning behind SZA’s song ‘Kill Bill’ – this generated a lot of traction on TikTok sparking positive comments of the community surrounding the new release.

Likewise, raking in around 65k views on TikTok, the artist who animated SZAs album art for alternate cover renditions went viral time lapsing his creative process.

Her inspiration for the album has many roots. Partially fuelled by her involvement with public ridicule but also through motifs of lost love. It is prolific to note that she sits as a woman of colour within a light-skin masculine-dominated genre and thus this album is a metaphorical departure from the “nice girl” archetype that is assumed of her. 

Following the release of her album, SZA is set to embark on her first North American arena tour, in February of this year. 

The artist has stated that this tour is her way of giving her audience a show that they deserve, whether that means playing a setlist of unreleased songs they’ve heard snippets of on Twitter or deep cuts of released songs. This 2023 tour is SZA’s method of appreciation after the long-anticipated (five years!) wait from her loyal fanbase. Silver eyeshadow is a go-to look for any New Year’s event as it is eye-catching, timeless, and beautifully flattering. Claudia, a TikTok make-up artist created a gorgeously warm toned makeup look with silver sparkles on the eyes to bring that pop of sparkle to the look and make it NYE-inspired. The make-up artist used the Huda Beauty Cashmere Robe Liquid eyeshadow as a base for the eyes as it has a warm bronzed tone so would be good to build upon. Subtle Sparkle

For those of you who are on board with jazzing up your looks the New Year’s Eve by adding a splash of sparkle but don’t want to overdo it, this next look is a good happy medium as it has a touch of sparkle but not too much that it overpowers the look. If you find it particularly tedious to minimise the appearance of your pores when applying your base coat, why not take a leaf out of Manny’s book? First things first, prep your skin with a moisturiser of your choice. According to Manny, the essential product is Tarte’s Timeless Smoothing Primer. Apply a small amount onto your finger, then pat it into your pores. Next, take a finely milled translucent powder and gently re-coat your skin before applying a medium to full coverage foundation (Manny uses Too Faced’s Born This Way) with your fingertips. Grab a stippling brush and press the products forcefully, swiftly followed by a spritz of Milk’s Hydro Grip Setting Spray for a base that won’t budge. If you struggle with setting your under-eyes, here’s a trick to add to your daily beauty agenda. Apply your foundation before topping it off lightly with a medium shade of concealer. Using Morphe, Shayla blends the products with a beauty sponge and lightly brushes it with Makeup Forever’s staple setting powder. When halfway through her eyeshadow, she then uses a mini beauty blender to set under her eyes with a pressed, rather than loose, powder, particularly on the side of her nose. Like the name says, transparent eyeliner is a minimal eye makeup look that is barely noticeable. But if done right, it exenterates your eyes and gives you ab beautiful cat-eye look. The TikTok makeup creator @maytahmi came up with this concept. In her TikTok, she shows how to achieve the look. If you don’t have darker eyelids, you should apply some eyeshadow, so the transparent eyeliner will be visible. You should use an eyeshadow slightly darker than your skin colour as a guide. Blend that well so you don’t leave any visible lines.

Then the fun part starts. You need a small, flat concealer brush to recreate this eyeliner look. Apply concealer to your brush – go for the lightest concealer shade – and draw a line from the outer corner of your eye upwards to your eyebrow. Just as if you are applying regular eyeliner. Then you draw a second line, which connects your eyelid with the outer corner of your first line – this should look like a triangle. Now the only thing left to do is blend the lines outwards, leaving the triangle in the middle blank. Unlike black winged eyeliner, we don’t fill in the gap. And voila! You are blessed with a natural eyeliner look.

Whilst all these aspects are slightly different, they come together to create a cohesive polished look that forms a healthy and put-together appearance, with emphasis on healthy. With trends centred around wellness and health, it is only natural that skincare and minimalist approaches to beauty will continue to rise throughout 2022, and we are here to give you a heads up on what we are in store for. 

Gender Norms Redefined 

With male-identifying celebrities such as Harry Styles and Machine Gun Kelly releasing nail polish in 2021, it is safe to say the definition of masculinity is evolving and becoming a less stagnant and toxic space. This is exciting and means men can hopefully start feeling less anxious about investing in a beauty or self-care regime. 

In 2022, we hope to see beauty and skincare continue to challenge the stigmas around gender. Having products split into gender categories simply isn’t good enough, and it’s great to see more brands having a gender-neutral approach to their recent releases. 

Beauty Goes High-Tech

In 2022, technology is an integral part of our everyday lives, and the beauty industry is no different. In 2021 we saw a rise in virtual makeup try-ons, with the likes of Clinique, Mac, Maybelline and many more allowing us to try out different makeup shades without even having to go to a store. 

Try-ons weren’t the only way for us to see which products work best for us from the comfort of our own homes, as brands such as The INKEY List have pushed to make their website experiences more personal and beginner-friendly through services that help you build the perfect skincare regime by getting to know you. 

We expect this year to bring us further innovative approaches to finding the perfect product for us, all whilst making online shopping a little more fun during these pandemic ridden times. We also expect makeup brands to continue to broaden their creative connections, particularly through the gaming industry. 2021 saw Nars partner with Zepeto, creating a virtual space for gamers and makeup lovers to unite. 

Striving For Diversity 

It may seem we have come a long way in terms of diversity in the beauty industry, and in some ways, we have. But, there is a long way to go. 

In the past few years, there has been a significant rise in the representation of different ethnicities in the beauty industry and more black business owners launching their beauty brands. Whilst this is great news, the skincare community is somewhat left behind, with advertising and education in this field being whitewashed. 

In the past year, many Asian beauty and skincare techniques have been taken on by mainstream audiences (the Gua Sha, sheet masks, fermented skincare, to name a few). This leaves us to wonder, why is it that these techniques only gain traction when white people show the benefits? Often, influencers who jump on these trends don’t give credit to the products’ origins, which in turn equates to their audience not being able to appreciate the culture that brought them such incredible skincare.

The answer to this is simple; educate yourself when it comes to the products you use, and educate others who do not give appreciation to the original cultures! Also, try to buy authentically when it comes to Asian beauty. 

Another issue we hope to see decreasing in 2022 is dermatologists and skincare therapists not being taught how to treat darker skin complexions. This happens as a result of teachings always being presented on white skin, which isn’t practical when going into the real world and being faced with clients of different ethnicities. To combat this, platforms holding medical teachings (such as Mind The Gap created by Black Medical Student Malone Mukwende) have been made to ensure professionals hold the necessary knowledge to give black people the skincare services they deserve. 

We hope 2022 sees more appreciation around different cultures in the beauty industry, whilst also creating awareness around skin tones and representation.

Wellness To Stay A Priority

To some, it may not be obvious that wellness is taking over in the Beauty industry. But, it has always been said that beauty starts from within, and when you think about how products such as sun cream, vitamins and the Gua Sha have come into their own during the last year, the importance of wellness in today’s society becomes apparent. Perhaps it is down to the pandemic, all those months staying at home made us realise how important self-care is, and that we were not giving enough attention to our health and wellness beforehand.  

We can also thank apps like Tiktok for this spike in wellness trends. After all, giving us 60-second snippets of advice from fitness gurus, health professionals and wellness enthusiasts has left us motivated and with a long wish list of products we need to help us on our wellness journey. 

Speaking of products, here are some of our favourites to get you started (if you haven’t already!) on your wellness journey;

Skincare To Dominate

Since 2020 skincare has hurdled its way to becoming the frontrunner of the beauty industry, as #skinimalism became one of the most loved and viral trends last year. If you’re new to this term, think of the well known saying “less is more”, and roll with it. 

This mantra is applied to both skincare and makeup, firmly suggesting we should keep our beauty routines as simple as possible. When it comes to skincare, this means not overloading our skin with a bunch of products, as this could lead to irritation and long term damage. Instead, we should seek dependable and gentle products to include in a daily step-by-step regime. 

It is predicted that the latest product craze in 2021 will be fermented skincare, and we are here for it! An example of an amazing fermented skin care product is ‘The Essence’ by Tatcha, which contains ingredients such as amino acids and lactic acids which help to promote the increase of cellular turnover whilst supporting the skin’s barrier. This results in a bright and healthy complexion, all whilst increasing skin hydration. With us all becoming so passionate about skincare, it is no surprise that the makeup industry is now striving to meet our newfound needs. In the past few months, we have seen the popularity of Lip Oils soar, with Tiktok creators showing us their favourite lip oils on the market. 

The benefit of using Lip Oil is that you are nourishing your lips as a part of your makeup routine. We are miles ahead of where we were in 2016, in the dark days of drying matte lipsticks. Lip Oils are usually formulated with hydrating and soothing oils such as Jojoba and rosehip, providing your lips with gentle moisture throughout the day. 

Lip oils are only the beginning of skincare enhancing makeup this year, with brands now making this a priority. Dior is one of the brands making this change, with the reformulation of the ‘Forever Foundation’, which is marketed as a 86% skincare base. This comes as Dior has rolled out their Clean Policy, in which the brand has abolished several ingredients in new formulations, to ensure that Dior is becoming more sustainable and natural.

Sustainability Becomes Routine

Being sustainable with fashion has become a routine to many, with apps like Vinted and Depop working wonders with preventing unwanted items from becoming waste. However, when it comes to the Beauty industry, sustainability hasn’t always been so simple. 

This year, we can expect to see more brands stepping out to make a change for the better. Whether that be following in the footsteps of Dior with refillable products, or using recycled packaging the way The Body Shop has. This means that many of the big beauty brands are becoming more Eco-Friendly, which is super helpful if you are someone who shops online.

If you like to physically go out shopping, there will also be more chances for your experience to be sustainable. This is due to shops like Boots launching initiatives such as ‘Recycle At Boots’, promoting customers to recycle their empty product packaging, all in return for Advantage points! 

Being sustainable can seem daunting, but, we are getting closer to this process becoming simple and stress-free. And, with so many sustainable products popping up, it’s easier than ever to find Eco-Friendly alternatives to your beloved beauty products that haven’t yet made the sustainable change.

Viva La Viral Video

Now, whilst we can offer some insight into what the next 12 months have in store, one thing we can’t predict is what will go viral. 2021 saw Tiktok nudge various trends into the mainstream, such as; Y2K Fashion, glowy makeup and curtain bangs! 

Whilst trends aren’t everything and we suggest not to change your whole style every time a new trend comes, our best advice is to keep your eye on apps like Instagram and Tiktok if you want to be in the loop with what is hot throughout 2022. Happy scrolling!

The British Fashion Council partnered with Tiktok to bring the red carpet to a global audience, ensuring one of Fashion’s most important nights was accessible to all. 

The star-studded night featured a live performance on the Red Carpet from Brits Rising Star Griff, followed by interviews and behind-the-scenes footage carried out by Comedienne Elsa Majimbo, Designer Henry Holland, and renowned TikTok Creator Tega Alexander, with the content available live on TikTok.

The most stylish-stars were out in full force, taking on the red carpet and supporting their favourite designers and the ever evolving fashion scene. With last year’s Fashion Awards being held virtually, it was clear that the celebs were basking in the glory of being out in London to celebrate the best in fashion, serving some serious looks. This is our rundown of the night’s best looks. 

Billy Porter

We had to mention the night’s host, the marvellous Billie Porter. He wore a Richard Quinn dress, once again bending the constraints of gender, showing us how to make a statement in style. 

Gabrielle Union-Wade

Actress Gabrielle Union dazzled in this stunning Maison Valentino Couture gown, demanding all eyes on her as she dominated the red carpet in the brightest shade of green. 

Indya Moore

We know Indya can strike a pose, and that she did last night, as she brought the flames in this all red number. They added a touch of glamour by wearing Fernando Jorge jewellery.

Demi represents the most timeless beauty, and she looked breathtaking last night as she rocked a Fendi dress.
