For the 90s hip-hop and rap scene, the trousers early origins went back to the parachute pants popularised by M.C. Hammer in the 80s. But the mid- to late- 90s took the style to new widths — and lows. Ultra-wide cut and slouched down trousers were on pretty much everyone in the scene, and were emulated by fans across the world. The style was often topped off by exposed underwear for both men and women, from traditional boxers to Logo’d waistbands (particularly those of Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein) being worn by everyone from Aaliyah to Marky Mark AKA Mark Wahlberg.

In another subculture, the roots went back to the early 90s as well — as the emergence of the rave scene, alongside the growing strength of skater culture, started to take over from the west coast of America.

Termed by them as “Phat Pants” or “Phatties”, wide-leg jeans and trousers were popularised at first by Californian ravers and club kids, who wore trousers with hemlines up to 1.5 meters wide per leg. People across the scene DIY’ed them and also bought them from brands like Kikwear and JNCO.

“In 1993, one of our key accounts in San Francisco asked us to make them a 23″ bottom for their store,” says the owner of Kikwear on their website, “because the Rave scene was beginning to emerge in Northern California and the kids were walking into the store with their homemade ‘wide leg’ pants.” 

Fast-forwarding to 2021/2022 and beyond, designers have tuned into the current nostalgia for Y2K by bringing back the free-flowing trousers. Many of the latest shows from designers have featured ultra-wide cuts, with long draping hems that cover up the shoes beneath, creating a block of fabric from the waistline to the floor.

From Marc Jacobs’ everything oversized show just two days ago, to Stella McCartney’s just launched Spring 2022 collection, there is no doubt there is an unmissable trend for the resurgence of broad cut trousers.

McCartney has designed what her website describes as “A-line raver pants,” and with “dichotomies of extreme proportion,” adding that her latest collection “blends the nostalgic with the futuristic, connecting Y2K music subcultures to the digital youth of today and hacking into the experimental edginess of raver and club kid aesthetic.”

McCartney also proved that wide trousers need not be regulated to just off-duty wear — she also masterfully placed the cut into suiting, matching a wide-cut pants leg with a closely tailored blazer.

Over in New York, Marc Jacobs had his own take on the trend. The runway looks featured in his Fall/Winter 21-22 runway tapped into a sense of encapsulating protection, whilst also seeming to recapture the sense of logo love that was celebrated by some of the original wearers of 90s wide trousers back in the day.

He said on Instagram that “We find purpose in the work from and for periodic but powerful transcendent moments of joy. And while the world continues to change with unimaginable speed, my love for fashion, the desire to create and share collections through this delivery system – THE RUNWAY – endures. Through the physicality of this shared experience, I hope to offer a moment of inspiration, curiosity, wonder and possibility.”

Bella Hadid has already been spotted in the trend, coupled with an ultra-short crop top courtesy of Jacquemus, and Kylie Jenner has been seen in multi-pocked wide-cut jeans.

Between white dresses and the classic pleated skirt, this summer we follow the example of Kendall Jenner and bring back the tennis player look.

It might be the fresh air of Wimbledon and the desire to stay outdoors after months of forced closure, or it might be the urgent need to train before summer. Whatever the reason, in recent times we have witnessed a sudden return to the tennis player lifestyle, not just aesthetic. Or rather, those graceful white uniforms that despite all the sweat and fatigue make the champions on the field look like an emblem of elegance. So much so, tennis and fashion over the years have often intertwined, contaminated and influenced each other, leaving open an interesting dialogue that continues over time, at alternate stages.

Last season, many designers hopped on the trend and incorporated it into their catwalks. Nonetheless, it was able to transcend into this season, and tennis is pleasantly approved for summer 2021. The last to confirm the happy liaison between the world of tennis and Hollywood was Kendall Jenner, immortalized in a couple of fabulous outfits signed Alo. The Los Angeles brand of sportswear, from yoga has recently diverged its attention on tennis, hiring a host of well-known faces that has greatly contributed to the revival of the typical pleated skirt tennis in a new, colorful version.

In short, the mini pleated skirt has officially won the podium as the most instagrammated sports leader of the moment. But in reality, there are several variations of the item. Riding the growing trend, many brands have dedicated capsule collections and introduced new lines to the new favorite sport of models and celebrities. These include the Polish luxury swimwear brand Marysia, which has just launched a collection designed for training which consists of dresses, tops, skirts, leggings and cyclist wear.

Even Tory Burch has focused on tennis, presenting a new brand of activewear, Tory Sport. It features a wonderful collection of vintage uniforms inspired by the best players in women’s tennis of all time, such as Chris Evert and Billie Jean King. And on the same nostalgic trail we find Adidas Original, which presented a collection made of recycled piqué, which echoes the classic aesthetics of tennis clothing, including V-necklines, a combination of white and green elegant silhouettes. All you have left to do now is get yourself in the cutest tennis outfit and head down to the court.

Fendi’s Artistic Director of Accessories and Menswear presented a collection that reflects the world, nature, architecture, and symbols, that represent the essence of Rome and ultimately of the Roman fashion house. The show, or ode to Rome, was characterised by a pastel colour palette, historical and geographical connotations, and most importantly by an irreplaceable Fendi location – its headquarters at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome, otherwise known as the Square Colosseum.

The latter was our favourite element of the entire collection, the geography and meteorology of the headquarters of the Roman maison were present not only in concept but in various designs. For example, through the use of prints with a topographic view of Rome, highlighting the store’s location, patterned knits and denims with a bird’s eye view of the capital, and even camouflage motifs of its horizons. Innovative and fine, yet with a touch of tradition, could it get more Fendi?

“ This collection was very much inspired by the light that’s so physically present here in our headquarters” explained Silvia Venturini in a recent chat with Vogue.

The collection was told through a film directed by Nico Vascellari and accompanied by the sounds of Alessandro Cortini, completing the visual aesthetics of the show that in a delicate manner reminds us of a summer daydream with a rather spring-like appearance.

“It is almost like a bird’s eye view of Rome from here. The colours and the perspective are always changing – the soft palette of the Roman sky across the day is so beautiful and I wanted it to be a focal point of this collection. How you see things – and from where you see them – has never been more important.”

Every look of the collection is centred on fashion versatility, showcasing a play with designs, silhouettes, patterns, textures and most evidently colours. Everything about the SS22 Menswear collection relates to delicateness, inspired by the summer season and the need for practical, simple, yet eye-catching looks for it.

From the use of tactical pieces such as blazers and cropped jackets, materials like ultralight cashmere or the so-loved crochet, complemented by a choice of striking but refined colours like lime and lavender – every element of this show evokes the feelings and vision one relates to summer and Rome.

The campaign captures models wearing McCartney’s creations while donning costume animal heads as they take a joyful visual journey through the streets of London. The campaign was also made into a mockumentary shot by Mert & Marcus, and narrated by David Walliams.

“Over the last year, as human activity slowed, we saw creatures of all stripes and sizes return to global cities,” the brand states on their website, with these changes allowing for “a stylish fantasy where these species live freely and reclaim their places amongst humans, boldly declaring: Our time has come!”

McCartney has been long famous for her dedication to animal- and eco-friendly fashion. And this time around, her efforts are made more impressive by the fact that this collection is her most sustainable yet — with her Autumn 2021 offerings being made of 80% environmentally friendly materials.This work also aims to encourage the audience to sign The Humane Society International’s petition to create a fur-free society.

McCartney noted that “While this campaign is light-hearted, I wanted to address a serious issue: ending the use of fur. Whether it is being sold here in the United Kingdom or farmed globally, barbarism knows no borders and this effort is key to my life’s mission of bringing a conscience to the fashion industry. I am proud to partner with Humane Society International and to help raise awareness of the incredible work they do—please join us in ending this horrendous practice by signing their petitions now.”

For instance, Prabal Gurung notably celebrated the gem last season with an avant-garde twist by sculpturing artistically beautiful ear climbers, which he contrasted with sharply lapelled collars and piercing plaids. 

In contrast, Simone Rocha approached pearlescence with nearly all-encompassing looks that flowed in a way that was reminiscent of a Botticelli painting. Generously rich baroque, pearl-style, hard side bags were matched with flowing off-white dresses, and heightened with pearl-embellished platform sandals. Pearls have practically become the signature for the designer, who also used them in her collaboration with H&M earlier this year. 

Pearls have been mixed with edginess, with Julien Dossena for Paco Rabanne who are famous for their amazing mesh and metal garments, and accessories, adding pearls to chain drenched garments, and pairing them with glimmering and velvety skirts. 

Pearls aren’t just acting as jewellery – they also have been seen gleaming up shoes and accessories. From clippable barrettes that can glam up even the most casual of outfits, to pearl-covered shoes and even masks.

Grace Jones, the iconic musician of the 70s and 80s, was famous beyond being an amazing musician — she was also famous for her incredible fashion sense. She originally started as a model for Parisian fashion houses, including Yves Saint Laurent, and went on to appear on the cover of numerous magazines, including Andy Warhol’s Interview. 

And now in 2021, her sharp-edged shoulders and bold imagery is providing the perfect intensity of inspiration for today. Ultra-intense, almost sci-fi power shoulders, which almost have a “protective layer” to them”, have been spotted on numerous runways — from Balmain, who are famous for beautifully dramatic shoulders, to Balenciaga and Carolina Herrera.

“Mulberry Editions” is a series of collaborations with young and upcoming talent from the British Fashion scene, that will not only celebrate the brand’s five decades in business but the importance of committing to environmental and social causes through clothing.

Some of the designers participating in this exclusive project are Priya Ahluwalia, Richard Malone and Nicholas Dale… all of which have become known for their innovative designs and dedication to a responsible and multicultural fashion cycle.

The latest collaboration announced, and probably our favourite one too, is the one with Priya Ahluwalia. The two labels will be collaborating for a capsule collection of accessories centred on tradition and incorporation of cultural diversity.

London-based designer Priya Ahluwalia, who has recently collaborated with Danish label Ganni for another environmentally aware collection, will be venturing for the first time into the creation of accessories – from scarves to handbags. However, from what we can see, these won’t be just any other accessories. The designer has managed to showcase and pay homage to her Indian-Nigerian heritage through all of her creations and will continue to do so through this collaboration.

The Mulberry x Ahwlualia line-up consists of the iconic Mulberry designs, such as the portobello tote, reimagined together with elements and themes inspired by the Black culture – specifically black hair. The designs will be inspired by the beauty of black hair and hairstyles, by traditional techniques of braiding, by the diversity of hair texture, and most importantly by the understanding of hair as a means of expression.

We are certain that it will be an interesting collection, one that could not only form part of our day-to-day wear but that can demonstrate how cultural elements can be showcased and admired through fashion without the risk of cultural appropriation. Paying homage to a culture (or more) through carefully manufactured and designed products.

The collection is meant to celebrate the “artistry, rituals and symbolism of Afro-Caribbean hair and Priya’s own personal narrative,” explained the luxury lifestyle brand, Mulberry, in its press release. This will take form thanks to the capsule’s unique designs, bold colours, daring patterns and rich meaning.

But it doesn’t end there, the collaboration has been presented as part of Ahluwalia’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection during London Fashion Week, where the designer also presented ‘Parts of Me’ – a short film directed by Akinola Davies Jr that pays homage to the importance of hair in Black culture.

With the aim to properly present hair as more than a stylistic element, and to continue the conversation about the significance of black culture in the creation of this project Mulberry and Ahluwalia have collaborated on a second film – ‘Tools of Expression’ as an extension to the project.

“It felt like a natural direction for the brand to go. I live by the beach, so I wear bikinis all year,” Elkaim told WWD. “We developed three styles: the Kauai, the Bambi and the Demi.”

Known for its printed corsets and low-rise flared pants, this collection boasts string bikini tops with matching cropped cardigans, all exquisitely made with retro, almost psychedelic prints. The designs have the quintessential balance between trendiness and creativity, not to mention the stunning combination of fabrics – including mesh – with form-fitting, and vegan leathers, and premium quality lycra. And what’s better than shopping from a sustainability-focused label, especially when coupled with such sensual silhouettes and exciting prints.

Miaou actively focuses on sustainability by using deadstock fabrics, an assortment of shoppable vintage fashions, and production methods that reduce drastically the consumption of water as opposed to other mainstream swimwear labels. In addition, all of the swimwear is made of an eco-nylon fabrication. And how cute are these money-printed bikinis?!

The designer’s inspiration behind the collection was traveling, the sort of escapism we all experienced during the pandemic.

“I began designing this in confinement, when the idea of traveling felt so far away, I took some of my favorite vintage swimsuits that I already owned, reworked them for months on end, and reimagined them in our signature prints.”

Alexia Eklaim To Refinery29

Alexia Eklaim, the power woman behind the collection, worked closely with the photographer Emily Lipson to create an evocative campaign, able to set a vision for the brand that redirected the audience to foreign places, at least through their images. In these images, models live extravagantly on yachts and all-white mansions, living their life authentically embracing the 90’s lifestyle, at least in terms of design items such as chain belts, whale tails, corset tops and cut out maillots.

The Parisian-born, Los Angeles bred designer wanted to make a collection that hugged every shape and size, in all the right places. She allegedly found the perfect pair of jeans at a vintage store in Paris, and ever since had envisioned to re-create a collection that emulated the excitement she felt whilst trying out those pants, as she struggled to find clothes that embraced her hourglass figure.

Her designs have been worn by her now friends Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, Carlotta Kohl, Paloma Elsesser, and more. Part of the designer’s success, even before launching her brand, was her presence on social media and engagement with celebrities. Miaou hosted parties both during New York and Paris fashion week, and it became ever so desirable by celebrities to attend these events.

Maximalist, eccentric styles not only have seen a resurgence on recent catwalks, such as the metallic pink Valentino boots to Virgil Abloh’s wearable cityscapes for Louis Vuitton, and current designers are infusing hope into their clothing through maximalist touches and escapist attitudes.

People haven’t seen us in a year… or at least not from our torso downwards from our endless Zoom meetings. And boy, have we all forgotten our legs existed too? Thankfully, we’re slowly easing our way into incorporating every body part into our outfits, and not just what would only be seen on camera. Cue the rise of patterned pants and platform heels (which keep climbing higher). ‘It’ girls are the living proof that maximalist supremacy is reigning over 2021, just think of Dua Lipa’s skyscraper leather knee boots, Prada’s patterned bodysuits and maximalist manicures; but also Bella Hadid’s colorful crochet headwear staples, bright lip colours, tie-dye patchwork pants and more over the top, maximalist clothing. Other fashion icons Rihanna, Hailey Bieber and Irina Shayk have all jumped on the bandwagon of maximalist prints, which are all responsible for our over-flowing online shopping carts.

Several brands have seen an unexpected rise in popularity thanks to the bold pattern trend, in particular brands that are 70’s inspired with a retro vibe, such as Paloma Wool and Gimaguas. Emma Mulholland’s label Holiday is another maximalist veteran: you’ve probably seen their Kokomo bottoms more than once on your feed, and there’s nothing we’ve wanted more. Disco waves are also extremely popular, hence these Gimaguas pants are perpetually sold out.

It seems that nowdays the bigger, the brighter, the better! This maximalist approach is thought to have risen from the desire of escaping lockdown. After all, its loud style, often excessive, saturated appeal in encouraging to be bold, not just in fashion, but as a lifestyle.

Pre-pandemic less was certainly more. Simple blue jeans and sartorial elegance were celebrated as the pinnacles of style continuum. Statement pieces were only rarely worn for special occasions, and clean, classy stand-out brands such as Jacquemus and The Row were the most trending. Featuring soft neutral palettes, they are the opposite of the bold pop of colours we’re seeing everywhere, especially the colour green. It seems strange how pre-pandemic the colour was avoided from everyone’s palette, and now everyone is obsessed with it! Designers persisted during the pandemic to keep the fashion scene growing and evolving; it was within the melancholic darkness of the pandemic that maximalist rose from the ashes.
