Celebrating their heritage is what inspired many designers at Saturday’s London Fashion Week shows. From Columbia to Nigeria, designers took us on a journey back to their roots (as far or close to the show’s London location as that may be).

With odes to the glamour of Bollywood through glittering embellishments or vintage sweaters tipping the hat to Camden in the late 20th century, designers showed us that what we wear is influenced by where we come from.

Nensi Dojaka

No womenswear designer provides females with the freedom to express their bodies like Nensi Dojaka. Breaking the stigma around women wearing revealing garments, Albanian designer Dojaka brought her iconic clothing characterised by sheer material, clean silhouettes, and revealing cut-outs to London Fashion Week.

With the memo that underwear can be outerwear, Dojaka sent slinky dresses and two-piece blazer sets with a provocative twist down the runway- reflecting the daring attitude of the modern woman. The clothing was featured in an array of peachy autumnal hues, perfectly imitating the colours of the season the collection is prepared for.

It wasn’t just the clothing that emphasised Dojaka’s message that any woman can and should be able to reveal their body how they wish, as models at the London show were from a range of backgrounds and had differing body shapes, but looked equally fabulous in the garments, bringing female empowerment and inclusivity to the forefront of the fearless show.

Eudon Choi

The source of your endorphin hit this week? Eudon Choi’s Autumn/ Winter 2022 show, where Korean designer Choi used tonal layers and an extensive colour palette to bring a message of ‘optimism for the future through his riveting collection.

Inspired by director Antonioni’s first coloured film, the show began with monochromatic looks in flaming red hues, before Choi layered multiple tones to produce a colour palette with an ‘aura of fantasy’. The style of the clothing channelled the swinging 60s, as Choi confirmed the trending micro-mini skirt isn’t going anywhere soon. Choi styled the looks with 1960s-esque colourful headbands and short boxy jackets. Playing on all of our emotions; the show was a journey through colour and creation.

Ahluwalia

Wittily named ‘Bollywood to Nollywood’, Ahluwalia first-ever runway show saw a fusion of Nigerian and Indian inspired garments to celebrate designer Priya Ahluwalia’s Nigerian/ Indian heritage.

With glimmering embellishments, clashing textures, and bright colours, the Vogue and I-D approved designer’s garments were an ode to old and new Bollywood/ Nollywood. Some garments were an obvious reference, with fluorescent tees featuring graphics of Bollywood movie posters, while others incorporated colourful Nigerian-style-colourful prints into

contemporary silk two-pieces; representing the brand’s vision of creating a hybrid of the past, present, and future through their designs.

Richard Quinn

From giant boxy dresses with top hats to high-shine dominatrix attire, when it came to Quinns show, it was impossible to predict what would emerge from the wings of the runway next. But his creativity and knack for surprise mean even the most fashion-forward crowd has always been astonished by the outlandish designs of Richard Quinn. Quinn’s innovative and emotive craftsmanship cultivates garments that are unique; each telling its own dramatic story.

Combining classic designs like floral prints with modern styles like oversized silhouettes, Quinn’s show was a true highlight of 2022 London Fashion Week.

Molly Goddard

Revelling in the joy of dressing up, Molly Goddard- a label known for extravagant ballgowns- brought all the frills and froth imaginable this London Fashion Week. Looking to Camden in the 80s for inspiration, Molly paired vintage-style sweaters with puffy skirts, bringing an air of 18th-century opulence to modern dressing. The London based designer’s collection saw mood-boosting colours and uniquely detailed textiles.

After Goddard admitted she wore a dress every day of the pandemic, it comes as no surprise her AW22 collection was more extra than imaginable. Ultra-platform shoes, bright shades, and intrepid gowns were showcased; reflecting the designer’s day-to-day memo that there is no such thing as overdressing.

Labrum

Paying homage to his West African heritage while incorporating the craftsmanship of his London fashion career, designer Dumbaya brought clean in cut suits embellished with floral and leather prints to the London runway.

Deemed the ‘Poetics of Movement’, the collection was yet another reference to the hardships of migration. When speaking about his collection, Dumbaya said moving to another country can ‘feel like your culture is being stripped away, explaining why the designer chose to bring a touch of West African culture to his new London home through abstract embroidery and bright coloured textiles.

Anciela

Dancing to the words of Adriann Ramirez’s poetry; Latin- British models emerged in segregated boxes; bringing human issues to the forefront of Anciela’s digital show. The collection was filled with clothing resembling traditional Columbian attire, including ruffled shoulders, sculptural dresses, and pinstripe suits.

The show was a gesture to Anciela owner Jennifer Drouett’s Columbian home, the set and garments were adorned with flowers to reminisce The Columbian Flower Festival. The show portrayed how the weight of beauty changes in a different environment. The dimmed lighting indicated the struggles of moving countries as a migrant, so did the dark clothing contrasting the happy sunlight yellow-hued garments when the models were at home. Anciela brought sharp tailoring with an important message relevant to the ongoing migrant crisis to London Fashion Week.

Halpern

Keeping it silky, sultry and sleek, Micheal Halpern used brick fringing to cultivate a

collection of charming evening wear garments for the elegant modern woman. Tweed

suits, silk dresses, and outlandish bridal looks all gave the collection a timeless and

classic aura- reminiscent of the wardrobes of old Hollywood actresses like Audrey

The timeless pieces were given a modern twist with shortened hemlines and material

cutouts, bringing old Hollywood to the 2020s.

The show took place at the central location of The Londoner Hotel, in attendance was everyone from Kate Moss (supporting her daughter Lila Grace in the show) to Boy George, Drag-Race icons, Bimini Bon Boulash and Tayce, Derry-girl Nicola Coughlan, and Mabel.

Initial looks opened by referencing the full-body leotards (typically, in latex) which have become a signature for the brand, worn by Kendall Jenner, Cardi B, and Kim Petras. But something is different about them. The bodysuits have a looser fit and come in an array of bright, block colours; they are more comfortable and wearable for the everyday though still include Quinn’s touches of attached gloves, and trousers which stretch to cover even the model’s shoes.

Next is an array of quilted floral looks, a Richard Quinn staple. Full-face coverage of floral prints has been replaced with frilly bonnets encircling the model’s face, perhaps this is a more practical solution to achieve head-to-toe coverage? Gorgeous contrasts are achieved between the pastel florals and black or brown gloves, bonnets, and various undergarments.

Some of the models appear on the runway with minimalist brown totes, resembling a sized-up paper bag but made out of a heavy, lustrous fabric which implies luxury design reinspiring an everyday object. More large bags arrived on the runway, matching the quilted effect created on puffer jackets via ballooning and stretching. These bubble-like bags match the head-to-toe floral looks constructed of quilted gilets, leggings, bonnets, gloves, and cape-like dresses.

A return to royalty which often inspires Richard Quinn appeared in the form of corsets and mini dresses with the appearance of short petticoats. A galore of intricate jewels and sequins created the appearance of royal dress seen in portraits where layers upon layers of rich, luxury jewels were stacked on complex garments.

Quite literally, Quinn’s description that it’s ‘almost like we’ve gone into our archive and slashed it’, comes alive when the gowns arrived on the runway. Voluptuous, ballooning ballgowns appear bisected, with trousers and leggings peering out from between the flowing, detached material of the skirt. Simple blocks of colour come together in the gowns effectively, creating divisions between draped tops, pleated skirts, and the leggings or trousers peeking out underneath the ensemble.

The collection closes with a gorgeous cobalt-blue mini dress of tiered pleated layers paired with neon green accents, a reflective purple dress ruched to create an elevated train, and a simplistic white long-sleeve, a-line dress caged by tulle flowers and sparkling wire.

This collection proved Richard Quinn is constantly evolving, re-thinking signatures and offering a new perspective for buyers every season. It is clear that the marks of latex, florals and head-to-toe coverage are here to stay at Richard Quinn but that does not mean the looks are placed within an immovable box. Rather Quinn accepts the challenge to reinvent and evolve what are already staples of the brand, and generate excitement as to what we can expect at the next London Fashion Week!

Bold and statement worthy, the volume trend has marked its territory for the upcoming season. Amongst the numerous trends spotted in the Autumn/Winter 2020 collections, the volumized look has most definitely caught our attention. Who can blame us when this trend screams the classic go big or go home!

Voluminous sleeves

It was only a matter of time before voluminous sleeves returned to the forefront, claiming its place yet again as a stylish go-to. In the Autumn/Winter 2020 show, voluminous sleeves made a strong appearance amongst many of the collections. Roksanda’s orange maxi with oversized ruffle sleeves is one of our favourites along with Richard Quinn’s bulbous sleeved dresses which rock that nostalgic 80’s feel. If you dare for more extravagance, Viktor and Rolfe display a sculptural pink dress that is sure to turn some heads. A bulging sleeve is asymmetrically paired with one of contrasting size, offering a playful approach to volume.

Bubble up

As the colder months approach, this trend offers a practical yet stylish option for the upcoming season. The catwalk featured an array of enveloping garments with outerwear and dresses offering a bubble-like protective layer. This was a strong look in J.W. Anderson’s collection consisting of spherical silhouettes inclusively wrapping around the body. At Halpern, a dress of explosive colour engulfs the wearer, leaving only the front of the legs visible. Marine Serre took the inclusive look even further with black puffy outwear that conceals around the head; practicality at its best.

Exaggerate the Hip

The Autumn/Winter shows saw an extreme exaggeration of the hips; Area and Moschino being two of the houses that utilize the look. To say that Area’s jackets and dresses accentuate from the waist would be an understatement. Area has pushed hip volume to the extreme with a bulging heart shape that protrudes from a nipped waist. Moschino similarly presents an array of long-sleeved dresses that encompass an umbrella effect around the hip. Paired with knee-high boots, we love how Moschino has merged the traditional with a modern 2020 twist.

Ruffled Volume and Tulle

When we think of tulle it is almost impossible for the words ‘puffy’ ‘big’ and ‘Molly Goddard’ not to spring to mind. We can always rely on Goddard to present some extravagant tulle pieces on the catwalk and for Autumn/Winter 2020 they are voluminous and bold yet still retain that delicate quality. A red dress consisting of ruffled tulle expands outwards and is layered over a jumper for a more casual look. We love how Goddard has paired a sense of volume and extravagance with a staple jumper. At Louis Vuitton, ruffles can also be seen amongst skirts and dresses, the sheerness of the fabric lending itself to layering. Ruffled skirts and dresses can be paired with a sheer trouser as seen in Louis Vuitton or with a checked trouser from Molly Goddard, creating a subtle layered look that is versatile for every season. In 2018 Moncler introduced The Genius Project. The Genius Project is the collaboration of the French Brand Moncler with genius fashion designers to release monthly collections. The project at first was deemed too ambitious for the brand as it is the first of its kind, but has since proved to be not only genius but ahead of its time. Under the slogan one house different voices, Moncler continues to expand their rosters of collaborations with today’s leading designers like Pierpaolo Piccioli, Simone Rocha and Richard queen.

During the recent Milan fashion week, we witnessed the third instalment of this project. The show seemed to blow the previous 2019 show out of the water, with even more collaborations and better art installations. The show featured 11 collaborators from great designers like to Richard Queen J W Anderson, Rick Owens to the luggage company Rimowa.

MONCLER JW ANDERSON

Moncler JW Anderson AW2020 Collection

JW Anderson the new kid on the Moncler block brings us in Moncler fashion inflation and unlike the economy, we approve. The designer recreated his archival pieces puffed up with puffer hats and scarves modelled to the tune of Claire de Lune.

Moncler Richard Quinn AW2020 Collection

Richard Quinn combines the future and past with sci-fi fashion and designs of the ’60s. With his own distinct aesthetic, to produce stunning pieces that presented as a space odyssey in the 60s.

MONCLER SIMONE ROCHA

Moncler Simone Rocha AW2020 Collection

With ruffle bottoms and tulle, Simon Rocha introduces femininity to Moncler’s structured technical and functional designs.

The brand also featured with accessory brands like Rimowa, Mate.Bike and Poldo Dog Couture with incredible art installations of a bike mountain, a dog grooming salon and a wall of luggage by Rimowa.

The Genius project was purposed as a brand to keep up with the speed of the internet age and Instagram society. Ashley Williams

Ranging from a layered green fur coat, to a satin pink gown covered in bows, Williams leaves nothing to the imagination as this collection employs a perfect combination of youthful spirit and a tongue in cheek approach to fashion.

Burberry

Burberry AW20 Collection

From leopard print and bright power suits to puffer jackets and checked corsets, Burberry’s AW20 collection has everything we need for the season, including a selection of fur trimmed coats and deconstructed rugby shirts that bring more of a new edge as Burberry also brings back its traditional print that everyone knows and loves.

David Koma

David Koma AW20 Collection

Bringing a bit of bling to the runways, David Koma captures the seemingly glamorous side of London life. Filling the room with sparkles, layered leather and velvet-boned corsets, Koma dazzles the audience with a powerfully embellished minidress that beautifully illustrates all things London, including the iconic ‘Gherkin’ building.

Dilara Findikoglu

Dilara Findikoglu AW20 Collection

Dilara Findikoglu’s AW20 collection is anything but ordinary with a hooped-skirt metallic gown covered in structured flowers, satin genie pants and various corsets paired with tights. One of her designs consisted of 3-D floral harness climbing up to the torso of the model and one was aided by a model carrying an actual cat in her arms as she descended the runway.

Erdem

Erdem AW20 Collection

From delicately beaded sheer feminine pieces, to androgynously shaped suits Erdem Moralioglu and Cecil Beaton brought a version of strong elegance to the runway accompanied by feathered head dresses and pops of turquoise and lime green.

JW Anderson

JW Anderson AW20 Collection

Jonathon Anderson brings an element of the 1920s into his AW2020 collection, with bead work, tinsel-covered garments, iridescent translucent fabrics and mirrored metallic tassels. His leather shawl-collared black over-sized suit juxtaposed the delicacy of the tinsel perfectly with such a strong silhouette.

Matty Bovan

Matty Bovan AW20 Collection

Matty Bovan’s AW20 collection pushes the boundaries on socially acceptable fashion, through his hanging curtains and hair-covered head dresses.True to form, Bovan creates a collection of weird and wonderful designs, that have no obvious narrative or order but bring a whirlwind of colour, shape and excitement to the runway this season.

Richard Quinn

Richard Quinn AW20 Collection

One of the most powerful piece form Richard Quinn’s AW20 collection is the jewelled head-to-toe armoured ensemble that reads “God Save The Quinn” across the skirt – a clear homage to Britain. The rest of the collection is a kaleidoscope of extravagantly silhouetted gowns, feathered head dresses and the iconic Quinn power shoulders.

Simone Rocha

Simone Rocha AW20 Collection

Throughout Simone Rocha’s show you see a collection of pure light streaming down the runway, consisting of cream satin, tule and wool layers. As the show progresses, darker more romantic tones begin to enter, covered in florals with rich blue, purple and red colours bleeding into the collection.

Temperley London

Temperley London AW20 Collection

Alice Temperley’s collection which was shown in her Bruton Street store was intended to bring an element of fun to London Fashion Week. Her pieces ranged from feminine vintage-style dresses, to stronger leather suits with a music-inspired print featuring multiple times throughout the collection.

Halpern

Halpern AW20 Collection

Bringing back some 80s vibes, Halpern’s AW20 collection consists of a multitude of detailed textures and prints, ranging from burnout velvet and green snake print leather to 3-D floral colours and fringed tiger print. Many of the looks were accompanied by knee-high boots and intricate face decoration.

You’ll have seen them all over the runways and they have without a doubt overflowed your Instagram feed. Whether you’re all about Richard Quinn’s minimalist floral take on the trend, or leaning towards Givenchy’s statement tailored sleeves, there are enough variations of the trend to make all your bulgy dreams come true. Blindness even designed a puffed sleeve double breasted blazer, incorporating the trend into its outerwear line.

Puffed sleeves are nothing new to the style scene; made popular in the late 1800s as a way to make waists seem thinner, the trend can be traced back to the likes of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, also known as Sissi. In a world famous painting by Winterhalter, the Empress is depicted wrapped in a white satin evening dress, on which hundreds of silver stars glisten along her back.

Fast forward a hundred years, and the 80s are establishing their own rendition of the sleeve craze. The era of extravagance that gave us power suits and shoulder pads had no issue coupling the trend with other golden fabrics and loud patterns, but the 2019 fashion is much more subtle. As always, when designers pillage a previous decade for inspiration, they only appropriate some elements – and the puffy sleeves of today are no exception. Nowadays, expect the trend to be accompanied by dressed down jeans, or a crop-top version.

Some puffy sleeves even made their way to history – in pop culture, they are most notable for covering the arms of the Little Mermaid on her wedding day. One might even notice its resemblance with an all time favourite of the fashion world: Lady Di’s wedding dress – a perfect example of the trend’s consistency. Formed in woven silk taffeta, the skirt formed a crinoline, which was, at the time, said to represent “sexuality and grandiosity”. Much like Elizabeth’s way back when, Diana’s dress was embroidered with 10,000 pearls that sparkled for millions of people to see on that very special day.

But what about the current designer’s vision of the trend?

For Valentino, the Fall 2019 couture collection delivered a puristic, minimalist approach to puffy sleeves through a light blue cropped jacket. Associated with a colourful plunging neckline and a fitted skirt, the sleeves accentuate the silhouette of the model. The combination of a dramatic sleeve with a simple look is Piccioli’s way of telling us that you can do extra, even if you’re only going to get your groceries.

Marc Jacob’s Renaissance inspired sleeves flowed through his latest fall collection, and one can only admire the trickle down effect that took place following his polka dot sleeve. Six months later, every face on Instagram would be wearing similarly styled sleeves – a statement piece carrying a consequential “WOW” factor. If you’re Marc Jacobs, the polka dot sleeve is paired up with a striped cotton dress that seems to slide down all the way down to the runway. While adapting the trend to an evening look, Jacobs also innovated with his day dresses – moulding the trend into something anyone and everyone can adopt day-to-day. It then comes as no surprise that all Instagram influencers have united under the trend – wearing sleeves with jeans or a fitted skirt, or associating it with fabrics such as vinyl and leather.

The fashion world’s take on puffy sleeves this season is also reminiscent of the 80s and 90s trend – only now, the open necklines and cropped versions make it easier to dress them down, and adopt them for every occasion.

So if you’re still wondering why you should spend some more time incorporating the puffy sleeve extravaganza to your daily fashion routine, then remember this: a puffy sleeve simultaneously oozes the frugal ways of 1800s fashion and the girl boss vibes of 2019, letting you express your feminine and empowered ways all at once.

September 16th marked the fifth day of London Fashion Week. Day 5 had us on the edge of our seats as industry hotshots Richard Quinn and J.W. Anderson took us to a new dimension with their Spring/Summer 2020. Here’s Voir’s lowdown on some of the most iconic looks from Monday.

Burberry and Opposites Attract

Burberry’s SS20 collection took on tailoring for womenswear. Their staple trench coats of course made an appearance as did dual-toned leather jackets, classically shaped Italian suits and beige toned blazers. Riccardo Tisci’s collection juxtaposed draped dresses with sharp and sophisticated cigarette pants making his collection diverse not only in model choice, but in overall aesthetic.

Christopher Kane and Really Loving the Earth

Kane’s SS20 celebrates the beauty of nature and being an “eco-sexual”. From blown-up images of wild flowers decorating the venue walls to paisley fabric dresses, the collection truly was an ode to the summer. What particularly stood out were the fabrics used for coats and skirts – the motif screen printed from the designer’s personal photograph taken over the summer at London Fields. Other hyper-realistic prints like the sky transformed Kane’s dresses into an eco-lover’s dream.

Richard Quinn’s Maximalist Style

Quinn SS20 pushed Kane’s wild-flower prints to an extreme. He stayed true to his signature style of floral prints and maximalism both in his employment of colour and silhouettes. What particularly caught our eye was the multi-coloured hand embroidered mini dress (Look 21). The edges were lined with pearls and the tulle fabric making up the bulk of the dress was delicately embellished with sequins forming flowers.

Quinn’s extravagance continues in how he uses boning and structure to create jutting out shapes with fabric. He manipulates the hourglass figure and in a very Richard Quinn bravura, pushes the boundaries of fashion experimentation and design.

Erdem’s Kaleidoscopic Collection

Erdem SS20 continued the trend of bright and colourful florals. Each dress featured on the runway boasted acid tones in highly saturated attention-grabbing shades. It wouldn’t be surprising if the garlands put up to celebrate Mexico’s Day of the Dead were on Erdem’s moodboard this season as the resemblance between his laser-cut dresses and the bunting is uncanny.

J. W. Anderson and Blingy Bras

J.W Anderson placed crystal jewellery at the heart of his Spring/Summer spectacle. Jewelled bras and belts were staple accessories that unapologetically shone down the runway rather than being concealed under garments in traditional fashion. Much like Burberry, tailoring featured heavily in the collection, but it was the elegant fitted dresses and vibrant floral incarnations which truly stole the show and the day.

Launching on July 9th, fashion eyes around the world are eagerly anticipating the drop of the newest collaboration collection, Liberty London x Richard Quinn.

Quinn is the new fashion name on everyone’s lips. With the Queen making her first ever front row appearance at his London Fashion Week debut show, he was awarded with the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design. In light of this, the designer became an overnight sensation worldwide, and the buzz around the Central Saint Martins’ graduate continues to grow.

The 30-piece collection includes key rings, tote bags, purses, scarves and cardholders. Several items in the collection have been splashed with a modern take on the original Liberty logo serving a more youthful touch to the collection. It’s been said that that butterflies can see colours beyond visibility to the human eye. However, the clashes of acid tones against Liberty Londons infamous classic bloom prints can only make you imagine what it’s like to truly see through the eye of a butterfly.

“Liberty London is a powerhouse,” Quinn says. “For me, it’s the print equivalent to Dior. The company founded on the principle of finding the new and showcasing it within the store, which is why it was so exciting for me to be working closely with them again.”

During Liberty’s worldwide ‘What a Liberty’ campaign, the collection will be exclusively launching instore and online on July 9th with prices ranging from £70 to £695.
