The newest PUMA AW24 collection revolved around the resurrected iconic Mostro – the refashioned 1999 sneaker acting as an inspiration for the whole set of outfits. Mostro found itself recreated in multiple forms, from more traditional, white-yellow-blue ones, with strap closures, to the more avant-garde – spiky, metallic, made of purple mesh, or ankle-length and khaki-coloured to match a military outfit. Regardless of whether we’re talking of the neon-yellow-spiked sneakers or the silver nylon Mostro boots, the shoes were by no means a mere accessory. They were the axis around which the show revolved.

Inspired by the futuristic, alien-like form of the spiky sneakers, Desens and McKimm’s collection was based on mostly metallic colours, nylon, vegan leather, and all fabrics shiny. What dominated was the varied, oversized tracksuit sets – some glittering with diamonds, some spaceship-like-silver and metallic, some made of vegan leather, and some sewn out of irresistibly soft, black velvet.

We also marvelled at leather and red velvet bodysuits, balaclavas, cargo trousers, and windbreaker-inspired, full-length dresses. The wow effect soared thanks to the accessories, including unconventionally shaped, futuristic sunglasses, matching gloves, and cosmic sports bags. The last outfit was the cherry on the Mostro delicious cake, with its white nylon catsuit and diamond-encrusted motorbike helmet.

It wasn’t just the magic outfits that created the mysterious, other-worldly atmosphere – just look at the stunning makeup done by Isamaya Ffrench! Though basic at first glance, at a closer look you spot the elf-like, pointed fake ears and the glistering black horns attached to models’ foreheads. Could we be more obsessed with those looks?

The show space added to the dynamic, hypnotising aura, and you just couldn’t help immersing yourself in it right after crossing the entrance, with “Welcome To The Amazing Mostro Show” reading above it. The space, reverberating with Eartheater’s electrifying music, was filled with life-size amusement park props – roller coaster, Ferris wheel, and flying swings (with flying Mostro-wearing fake legs!). The spacious interior and high ceilings of Park Avenue Armory, with metal constructions and props in half-light, created a unique atmosphere for an equally mesmerising and innovative collection.

The celebs who visited the show seemed to be as impressed by the show as we were, taking countless selfies with the enormous, lighted flying swings in the background. Among notable guests were Emily Ratajkowski, Ashley Graham, Davido, Kyle Kuzma, Becky G, and Hari Nef.

However, the key celebrity in PUMA’s Mostro collection is, no doubt, ASAP Rocky, who starred in the uncanny, Alien-like advertising short film, published a few days before the show. With its Ridley Scott inspirations, it already set the cosmic tone for the whole event and whetted our appetites. But we probably hadn’t imagined in our wildest dreams what a breathtaking show PUMA was to offer us.

Rihanna has been papped wearing these shoes in the lead up to the launch, choosing to pair the sneakers with vintage Jean Paul Gaultier coats and jeans. Undoubtedly, the multi-talented singer and businesswoman has her unique mark on fashion and rightfully so.

The singer stole the show with her oversized, purple bird jacket and an outfit that was reminiscent of the early 2000s fashion scene amongst the punk and rapper community. Styled by, Jahleel Weaver, the multi-hyphenate wore the purple jacket with a checkered, tweed, red,Jacquard lining and a quilted leather finish over which the bird jacket laid. Rihanna choose to wore a white sport-jersey inspired slip with lace detailing below the jacket and excessively baggy JNCO-esque jeans popularized during the 90s. She accessorized the look by bringing back the “wallet string” chain except this was a string of diamanté hooked on to the loop of her jeans which collectively gave Green Day, Nickleback and Hot Topic a run for their money. She also wore a chunky necklace which coincided with the colours of the diamanté and stacked gold hoop earrings.

Rihanna’s makeup artist, Priscilla Ono gave her the signature Rihanna glow for her base, and an incredible purple smokey eye which I cannot help but see as a call back to the heavy purple shadows of the 00s, a la Britney Spears. She doubled down on the early noughties’ nostalgia with a dark lip liner and nude gloss. Rihanna’s hair was done by celebrity hair stylist, Yusuf who chose to put her hair in a preppy ponytail to match her top’s “Bring It On”, cheerleader vibes, with a curled swoop for her bangs in the front to frame her face.

The entire look was such a fun way to encapsulate the Y2K revival, especially as a celebrity who more or less defined the later years of the noughties. There is no one who could have pulled this look off other than her, once again proving there is no replacing the ultimate bad girl, RiRi.

Alongside PUMA’s CEO, Björn Gulden, and CSO Anne-Laure Descours, model, actress, and activist Cara Delevingne will host the one-of-its-kind event. In addition to the hosts, writer, director, and broadcaster Reggie Yates will also guide audience members.

Participants in the discussion include sustainable lifestyle influencers Monika Poppy and Izzy Manuel, co-founder of Flock Together, Nadeem Perera, as well as co-founders of Earthrise Studios, Jack Harries, and Alice Aedy.

The purpose of Conference of the People is to give the younger generation an active role and say in making the decisions that will shape their futures and raise awareness of the current climate crisis. Experts have warned that a growing toll is taking on young people’s mental health due to the climate crisis. The emergence of ‘eco-anxiety’ – the chronic fear of environmental disaster – is likely to be underestimated and lead to long-term damage for many—conference of the People endeavors to ease the burden on this generation. 

Among the topics discussed during the event: are waste and product afterlife, using more eco-friendly materials, managing eco-anxiety, protecting eco-systems, and ways to collaborate between the industries in order to get results sooner.

A PUMA RE:SUEDE update is also planned to be presented, which addresses the company’s goal of making a biodegradable version of its most iconic Suede sneaker.

In a discussion of materials, the brand will examine how to use more sustainable sources of cotton, polyester, and other fabrics within their products to make a positive environmental impact, while in a discussion of biodiversity, it will be shown that new, innovative materials can contribute to the reduction of biodiversity threats.

Eco-anxiety has become a complex subject for many, especially young people, amidst the constant stream of adverse reports we have seen this year about the state of the environment. Together with Cara Delevingne, a panel will harness the negativity, influencing other brands to follow suit and take emergency action to tackle the harm from the climate crisis. As the panel’s final discussion will be on the ways in which the fashion industry can evolve in order to alleviate the current environment.

Conference of the People will be held live from London and streamed worldwide on 6th September 2022.

The unprecedented event will allow PUMA’s industry peers, activists and consumers to come together and discuss solutions to some of the fashion industry’s most pressing sustainability challenges whilst amplifying the voices of young people around the world.

Not just a pretty face, Cara Delevingne is also a keen activist, she said: “Together with PUMA, I have worked on sustainability topics for several years and together we have launched more sustainable collections such as Exhale.”

“It is important to continue the debate about this topic so we can find solutions to environmental issues such as climate change, waste management and biodiversity.” We couldn’t agree more!

Hosted by Cara, PUMA CEO Bjørn Gulden and PUMA CSO Anne-Laure Descours, the brand is compiling panels that will feature some of the most prominent voices in sustainable fashion along with some famous faces.

Topics for discussion will include tackling waste, using more sustainable materials, impacting climate change and finding ways for the industry to collaborate to achieve results sooner.

“We will focus on Gen Z during this event, as we want to give this generation a voice when it comes to the decisions that have to be made today to shape a more sustainable future,” said Bjørn Gulden, CEO of PUMA.

Recently praised for topping the Business of Fashion’s Sustainability Index 2022, earlier this year PUMA announced that it had reduced its carbon emissions between 2017 and 2021 and aims to make nine out of 10 products from more sustainable materials by 2025. With a sell-out tour and album, Future Nostalgia, based on blasts from the past – including samples of tracks by Gwen Stefani, Stevie Nicks, and Neneh Cherry – global pop sensation Dua Lipa took the neon lights of retro disco and rave flyers as the inspiration for her second collab with sportswear brand Puma. With a viral Versace runway wink under her belt, having also walked for Balenciaga’s latest haute couture show last week in Paris, Lipa is one of fashion’s hottest icons of the moment, making the new Puma Flutur collaboration a must-see.

Dua Lipa not only inspires us with her music but also with her sense of fashion. Leopard faux-fur hats, silver shining opera gloves, and shaggy knit leg warmers are just a few of Dua Lipa’s recent outfit choices – but her adventurous dressing goes far beyond that to expertly match streetwear with emerging labels and Y2K style. Her new collection perfectly displays this and has been previewed during her concerts as Lipa wore the pieces throughout her Future Nostalgia tour.

Designing a 30-piece collection with the Puma team, together with longtime Puma collaborator, designer, and songwriter Billy Walsh, Lipa’s unisex collection (the first segment dropped late last year), was conceived with dancing in mind. With a tour wardrobe made up of lycra bodysuits by the likes of Mugler and Balenciaga, Lipa’s high-voltage dance routines require outfits that are glamorous as well as functional. The Dua Lipa x Puma collection, available globally from 14 July 2022, features tracksuits, skin-tight zip-up jerseys, skirts, and polo tops in vibrant orange, pink and purple shades. Vivid colours and striped maxi dresses that evoke the sporty athleisure side of Lipa’s unique style. In an accompanying campaign film and set of images by Jordan Hemingway, the designs are modeled by a troupe of dancers from Lipa’s Future Nostalgia tour.

The campaign is supported by well-known female artists and creators including such celebrities as Dua Lipa, Cara Delevingne and Winnie Harlow. ‘She Moves Us’ is meant to inspire and help women to overcome challenges and feel motivated to reach their career goals.

Designed to honour the release of the 25th instalment of the legendary fictional spy agent, James Bond; No Time to Die sparks the newest concept of the Adidas ultraBOOST. While both products are due for an early April release, to celebrate the new upcoming collections; We have compiled the ultimate list of the previous best celebrity sneaker collabs, the top 10 to be exact.

10). Donald Glover x Adidas

At number ten we have Donald Glover’s collab with Adidas in April 2019. The company came together with director and musician on remastered designs of the Continental 80, the Nizza and the Lacombe. Not the most outlandish design within the top ten, but makes the list based on adaptability and minimalistic nature.

9). Cardi B x Reebok

In early 2019, new rap princess Cardi B coupled up Aztrek sneakers to endorse their new retro-influenced shoes. With Cardi’s music at the time being motivated by the old school style, this collab was perfect; from the vintage blocky design to the dynamic colourway.

8). G Dragon x Airforce 1

Number eight features K-pop idol G-Dragon’s endeavour with a remake of Nike’s classic Air Force 1. Cleverly tagged with his clothing line’s flower emblem, the “Para-noise” shoes represent a collaboration in its truest sense, making this meshing of formulas one of the decade’s most memorable.

7). Alexander Wang x Adidas

The last of three collections between Adidas Originals and designer Alexander Wang during 2017. While another fashion brand succumbs to the gentrification of skate style isn’t the most innovative; but with inspired colourways like woodsy brown, it was the forest meets the concrete jungle.

6). Vivienne Westwood x Asics

The creative combination of designer Vivienne Westwood and sports corporation Asics hooked up to create an exclusive selection of a dozen shoe designs that dropped in the space of a couple of months. The 2019 releases aimed at legacy tennis shoes,

reinforced by dynamic artwork and faint features. While all hit retailers worldwide, you’d be lucky to find a pair of these in your local shops.

5). Serena Williams x Nike

Queen of sport, Serena Williams completed her comeback for Wimbledon in style with the release of her new Off-White Nike trainers back in mid-2018. The NIKEiD style inspired cleats were painted with pink from top to bottom, straightforward, sleek yet inspirational.

4). Anna Wintour x Nike

The iconic Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour came together with her current brand to remaster the classic Air Jordan 1s. The pair was not only the first AJ1 design to include a female adaptation, but also with Wintour’s backing, the shoe displayed its own emblem of “Edited by Vogue” to represent Wintour the right way.

3). Kendrick Lamar x Reebok

The hookup between Hip-Hop superstar Kendrick Lamar and Reebok started in early 2015. Of course, each drop is interlaced with a strong meaning, much like his music, with colourways normally matching themes against gang violence; each trainer implements conflicting blue and red marks. Even though the shoe is clean, the message of the sneakers bumps it up to third on the list.

2). Pharrell x Puma

Back in 2016, NMDs was one of the most fashionable sneakers around, so it was no surprise that when the word was out that a team-up with Pharrell could be in the works, the anticipation around the drop was immense. With a particular, thick lacing structure within the middle, not to mention the jazzy irregular pattern design of the words “species” and “being”. Much like Lamar’s shoes previously, the aim of this release was not just to design a dapper sneaker, but to promote a far-reaching message.

1). Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1

Just off of this Collab alone, Travis Scott is already one of the biggest celebrity’s in fashion as of today. While he has a tough battle on his hands to beat Virgil and Kanye to the number one spot, but much like Abloh and Yeezy, he has the Midas touch right now, whether it’s in music or fashion, which creates even more assurance to his validity within the creative field as a partner in business. Scott and the Jordan brand are a perfect mesh, we would expect more great things to come from these two as a collective as the year progresses.
