Jeremy Scott has announced that he is leaving Moschino after 10 years with the fashion house. To mark the ending of one era, and the beginning of the next, we are looking back on some of Moschino’s most iconic moments throughout Jeremy Scott’s time as Creative Director.

Gigi Hadid’s Bridal Look for SS19

One of the most iconic moments of Jeremy Scott’s career at Moschino has to be the SS19 show. The show began with a phone call from the one and only Gigi Hadid who warned Scott that he was late for the SS19 runway, Jeremy then declared that all he had for this collection were some sketches, a designer’s worst nightmare. Despite the implied chaos, Gigi Hadid closed the show in an impeccable bridal look with a train of butterflies following her down the catwalk. This was a moment that stopped everybody in their tracks, it was all anyone was talking about, and looking back on it now, we remember why.

He Predicted Midsommar for SS18

Jeremy Scott’s SS18 collection for Moschino was ahead of its time. You might be wondering how this collection was predicting the future, but if you look at the last few looks from the show some of the looks may remind you of a certain dress worn by Florence Pugh in 2019’s Midsommar. The moment that Dani is crowned the May Queen and is veiled in a gown of flowers has been recognised within pop-culture as one of the most iconic fashion moments in film (and that it was). Celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Halsey even entered into a bidding war over the gown. And while the Moschino looks were not the same as Pugh’s elaborate gown, the they definitely shared Midsommar’s floral influences. Spekaing of Moschino and the film industry, this collection was also home to Zendaya’s iconic butterfly dress that she wore to the premiere for The Greatest Showman.

Moschino or McDonalds for Fall 2014

For their Fall 2014 collection, Moschino shocked us all. Never in a million years would we have guessed that McDonalds would work its way onto the runway, but Jeremy Scott made that happen. Inspired by Franco Moschino’s own satirical outlook on the high-fashion industry Scott incorporated ‘junk’ into this collection, this time through junk food. The red and yellow combination was universally recognisable and the infamous ‘golden arches’ were bent into a heart-shape as a subtle nod to ‘Love Moschino’.

SS21 saw many shows go digital due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a development within the industry that required a lot of creativity. No-one seemed to jump at this opportunity as much as Jeremy Scott though, who recruited none other than Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to create 30-inch puppets to model his collection. Yes, you read that correctly, 30-inches. This meant that for every look there was a miniature, puppet-sized version ready to be modelled. This moment brought excitement and whimsy in a time of uncertainty and fear as Jeremy Scott did what he does best, made fashion playful again. There was even a puppet version of Scott himself who came out to close the show.

Inspired by Marie Antoinette, Moschino’s Fall 2020 collection was dramatic, extravagant and over-the-top, but what else would you expect from the 1800s? The Queen of France was the perfect muse for Jeremy Scott who always favours the elaborate in his work, but it also came as an exciting change from Moschino’s former investment in bringing ‘trash’ to the runway, as this time they favoured decadence. The collection was not all bustles and petticoats though, with looks inspired by Marie Antoinette’s most famous quote ‘Let them eat cake’ closing the show.

As we previously mentioned, Moschino likes to be ahead of the latest blockbusters, and while Barbie has been consistently famous since 1959, Jeremy Scott was re-imagining Barbie’s look long before Greta Gerwig. In 2014, Moschino based their entire Spring Summer 2015 collection off the character designing a fun campaign that brought dress-up into the world of adults.

Jeremy Scott has never been one for dialling it down when it comes to his collections, so it was no surprise that the invitations to Moschino’s Pre-Fall 2020 show in New York took the form of a supersized Moschino Metro card – a precursor for what was to be at once an overt celebration of maximalism and an ode to the city that never sleeps. For the Milanese brand’s first New York show, Jeremy Scott transformed an empty subway carriage at the New York Transmit Museum into a runway, with front- row guests perching themselves on the subway cart seats to witness up close and personal the brand’s Pre-Fall 2020 Women’s and Autumn/Winter 2020 Men’s collections.

‘I wanted to offer a little bit of everything. A round-the-clock set of ensembles for city girls and guys who aren’t afraid to go from the ballroom to the back room, then watch the sun come up over the East River,’ Scott said in a press release. An open love letter to the city, where he studied Fashion Design at the Pratt Institute, the show paid homage to the eclectic mix of city subcultures through a collection packed with East Coast attitude. Exploring every nuance, the collection offered something for everyone, from baggy tracksuits and dad-style sneakers inspired by 90s Harlem street style, to a take on tweed for the uptown working woman – though not without a dose of edge, with chunky gold chain accoutrements appearing in copious quantities.

Each of the 75 looks worked to form a sartorial assortment of myriad prints and textures, with denim corsets, 80s chain-print, punkish leather and fur stoles aplenty. But beyond the fleets of outrageous trappings that populated the runway, there was also a surprising amount of wonderfully wearable ensembles, from a classic camel trench coat to a series of silver evening gowns dripping with embellishment.

Moschino’s proud tradition of logomania reigned supreme, with the brand’s logo brazenly woven through the collection, on hats, bags and giant gold chains. XXL handbags and backpacks seemed to suggest that the tides are turning away from 2019’s tiny purse trend (see Jacquemus’ Le Sac Chiquito) in favour of bags that we can actually fit everything we need into. Supersized puffer jackets and baseball hats also abounded, with an abundance of blown-up proportions serving as evidence of Scott’s unfading mastery of maximalism. Lighters served as clutch bags, while giant safety pins held together tracksuits converted into cocktail dresses and ball gowns. A celebration of the audacity and versatility of New York City which joyfully played with the Moschino codes of irony that echo through all of Scott’s collections.

Twilight soaked houses were littered with the silhouettes of trees eerily cast against them by the last remaining light the day had to offer. A fragile veil of mist lingered, only visible under the eerie glow of the dimly lit street lamps. A handful of windows, sheer curtains diluting the glare, promised the street wasn’t completely lifeless.

Suddenly, a piercing scream cut through the street’s thick silence. From the front door of the only lit porch on the street, a young girl darted out. Her ice-blonde bob which jaggedly framed her panic-stricken face flew wildly around her head as she dashed down the stairs of the porch, and ripped through the neatly trimmed hedge as she sprinted to the next house. The girl’s body pressed up against the door as her tightly clenched fist violently pummelled the hard, white wood.

No answer.

The girl bolted to the next house, arms flailing, her legs almost moving too fast for her. She slaps her palm maniacally against the door.

Again, no answer.

Hysterically screaming, she turns away from the door and looks out into the dark street in desperation for someone, anyone, before spotting a side gate and flying towards it. The two rows of people neatly sat back to back through the centre of the street sat in a stunned silence and craned their necks as they watched the fate of the girl unfold.

Not the thrilling ending you were anticipating? Apologies for the disappointment, but we have good reason. The reason being that the girl (who goes by the name of Suki Waterhouse) was in-fact in no grave danger; this was not the opening scene of a horror movie. This was the dramatic opening of Moschino’s resort 2020 catwalk.

An unusual theme for the catwalk of a luxury fashion brand. Granted, the ‘trick or treat’ themed catwalk makes complete sense after seeing the collection itself which pays tribute to old Hollywood horror movies.

Now, let’s take a little trip back in time to ‘little’ you, skipping down your cul-de-sac, all sellotaped up in a big black bin bag with a piece of cardboard strapped to your face. High on the sugar from the contents of the now empty basket you were clutching. However nostalgic they may be, if you have memories similar to this, it probably cements the fact that ‘Trick or treating’ is, by nature one of the least glamorous, never mind ‘haute couture’- related activities. An unusual theme for the catwalk of a luxury fashion brand. Granted, the ‘trick or treat’ themed catwalk makes complete sense after seeing the collection itself which pays tribute to old Hollywood horror movies. Not that we ever had any doubts, for in Jeremy Scott we trust. Yet again, Moschino managed to pull off another one of his crazy, creative visions.

As Miss Waterhouse made her swift exit through the big white side gate, models began emerging from the driveways of the houses either side of the audience on the set at universal studios. In a previous life, this set had been the idyllic suburban street that was home to the Desperate Housewives, known as Wisteria Lane.

One singular spotlight right at the furthest corner of the set was the only real source of light for the show, creating distorted shadows of the models. Frankenstein’s fashion re-birth; a bright green boxy-style belted leather jacket with matching skirt stretched the word ‘chic’ to its limits, as big black Frankenstein-esque scars were strategically and not so subtly dispersed over the sophisticated silhouette.

Moschino’s take on Red Riding Hood was a standout look for us. A couture mash-up of the wolf; a blue cartoon mask and the grandma; a powder pink silky night gown with matching chiffon cape hemmed with ostrich feathers.

When someone wrapped up in what is essentially rolls of toilet paper can be made to look at home on a high fashion catwalk, it says a lot. On this note, we present to you, Moschino’s take on the seasoned Halloween outfit; the mummy. Only the eyes of the model were visible under the lengths of thin white chiffon that covered the model from head to the fishtail hem of the gown. The mess of delicate chiffon which contrasted with the heavy gold chains draped round the model’s neck and hips was cleverly drawn in at the waist with a chunky black and gold ‘Moschino’ belt, and matching biker jacket.

Moschino’s take on Red Riding Hood was a standout look for us. A couture mash-up of the wolf; a blue cartoon mask and the grandma; a powder pink silky night gown with matching chiffon cape hemmed with ostrich feathers. The legs emerging from the bottom of the nighty covered in white opaque tights were slipped into pink platform pumps. Tying the whole look together with a jarring yet pleasing clash was the fiery orange-red hair that cascaded down the model’s chest- a nod to Red-Riding Hood, the woman herself!

These looks began weaving down the blue-black tarmac catwalk, in and out of a bespoke corpse-bride, designer Dracula, a couture Prom Queen – you get the point, you name it, it’s been given a Moschino makeover.

The intricate details of the styling, from the accessories to the hair and make-up all individual to each look, were reminders that although Moschino clearly has a sense of humour, it’s not all joking around. Behind this theatrical presentation and equally theatrical looks, Moschino is still the luxury fashion house we know and love.

We have to hand it to them, in an industry that occasionally has the tendency to take itself a little too seriously, Moschino has managed to inject a bit of life and sense of humour into yet another of their collections, and long may they continue to do so! Happy Halloween!

The thirst for horror is nothing new, we have experienced it for decades through cinema and literature with movies like The Omen, The Shining and more recently Zombieland. Jordan Peele’s latest film ‘Us’ has reportedly left viewers ‘seeing demons’ such is its graphic content.Fashion has now taken up the mantle with Moschino’s SS2020 Halloween collection and the statement bullet wounds on some Mowalola Ogunlesi’s new garments. There is a peculiar intention behind the rise of horror in popular culture; and that is to depict the world as it is.

Most recently, designer Mowalola Ogunlesi crafted her clothes to reflect a dark reality of America with her latest SS20 Menswear collection ‘Coming For Blood’. Naomi Campbell took the internet by fire during London Fashion Week when she was spotted wearing one of the pieces—a long white dress with a striking bullet wound right in the middle. A risky move which, in light of the 22 school shootings that occurred in America this year, sparked negative comments accusing the model of glorifying gun crime. The controversial outfit was defended by the designer who explained that the bullet hole is a symbol of “her lived experience as a black person”.

                    Mowalola Ogunlesi SS2020 Menswear Collection

When correctly contextualised with the rest of Ogunlesi’s collection ‘Coming For Blood’ the dress makes sense. Playing with bloody and ghostly colours, the Nigerian designer portrays the “horrific feeling of falling in love”. From bloodied hands to red contacts and gothic make-up, the male models sport bleak but stylish outfits; aptly embodying the intertwining feelings of joy and fear that come with loving someone. With this concept, Campbell’s dress then has a dual meaning. It signifies two types of dangers felt by the designer: trusting another person with your heart, and also living in a racist system as a black individual. Literally, the bullet injury reflects police brutality towards African Americans, and therefore the real horror that this subjects the black community to. Figuratively, the wound design signifies the pain of love.

Fashion Designer Jeremy Scott displayed a ‘horror collection’ of his own earlier this year, however with a rather different intent and tone than Ogunlesi. With Dracula tops, Scream-inspired outfits and even a dress mirroring a scene from King Kong, the Moschino SS20 collection is full of cinematic references; rendering the work modern and reflective of today’s pop culture. With the growing political statements being made through fashion, Scott appears keen to spread much-needed humour and positivity amid all the horror.

Undoubtedly, Scott’s choice to take inspiration from horror films for his collection stems from the undeniable fact that cinema was the first field to explore the genre, and exploit it to tell fictional stories most commonly based on real events.

After the Oscar-winning director of ‘Get Out’, Jordan Peele, surprised us all once again with ‘Us’; a thrilling story symbolising the consequences of systemic racism. Based on the idea of doppelgängers, the film follows an American family getting attacked by their doubles—known as the ‘Tethered.’ In their angry and frustrated nature, the Tethered embody the trauma of African Americans upon enduring discrimination and violence for so long. They come from an ‘underground’ version of the world—a dark and sinister environment which represents the strong oppression that the black community is subjected to in America. What is unexpected is the way in which Peele confuses us not only through an ambiguous ending, but also by merging pure horror and comedy throughout the entire film. This creates numerous layers of meaning; a literal one where a family tries to survive a nightmarish night, and several figurative interpretations regarding the horror of America which fans continue to try and dissect—and this is a clear example of Peele’s genius.

Slowly but surely, horror is also making its way into music as well. Just like in cinema, musical artists are often using their platform to draw their audience’s attention towards specific social or political issues, and that is exactly what pop musician Grimes is planning for her forthcoming project. Reportedly interested in the horrors of climate change, the singer is going to personify global warming as an evil villain in the album. This take on climate change is unique and perfectly symbolises how dangerous and threatening the situation only grows to be. Grimes’ music is known for incorporating different genres; pop, r&b, electronic and hip hop, and touching on multiple subjects such as love, feminism and now global warming. In line with the originality and bold variety of her craft, her new album will undoubtedly also be filled with upbeat melodies, or colourful music videos and lyrics to contrast the dark aspect of the villain.

Horror is present in the arts because, more frighteningly so, it is all around us. It is on the streets, in the governments and in the ocean. Individuals like Ogunlesi, Peele and Grimes imitate life in their art, conveying powerful messages about the gravity of the respective subjects that they present. And they do so by evoking horror in unique and distinguishable ways which aptly reveal the talent behind their artistry.

Boss lady fits and sports luxe were merged into classic Brandon Maxwell’s signature tailoring and Tomo Koizumi showcased multicoloured fluffy ensembles that broke the internet, with only 30 days worth of preparation.

Having long dreamt of reimagining the works of one of his heroes, Italian film director ,and screenwriter Federico Fellini, Moschino’s creative director Jeremy Scott brought his favourite cinematic inspiration to life on the runway at the Moschino’s pre-fall 2019 collection in Rome.

The magic took place inside the historic Cinecittὰ studios, the largest film studio in Italy which has shot over 3000 films including Casanova and La Dolce Vita. Calling out Fellini’s characters from La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, and Satyricon, Jeremy excitedly explains backstage, “It’s Fellini.

“It’s all the things I love about him mixed together. There are exaggerations, off-duty showgirls, Casanovas, Centurions. It’s surreal, it’s otherworldly.”

Men and women strutted down the runway sporting luxurious clothes reminiscing Fellini’s greatest characters, leading the crowd to gasp in awe. A model in a rose red strapless floor-length gown and blonde wig brought up images of Swedish goddess Anita Ekberg in La Dolce Vita prancing in Rome’s Trevi Fountain.

Jeremy worked ancient Latin font in satin numbers with ghosts of Italian nobility brought to life in duchess dresses, cage skirts ,and maxi wigs. The fantastical runway was brimming with royal bronze and scarlet colours with characters dressed as Imperial Roman figures who seemed to walk directly off the set of Satyricon.

Feathers and beads embedded on duffel coats and bomber jackets were sported by men, with tweed suits embroidered with beaded lattice and crowns resembling a prince. Who said princes were limited to adorning suits? A male model was seen stepping out in a leather jacket paired with a tutu – a complete spin on traditional white-tie dressing.

Jeremy Scott came, he saw, and he conquered.

The lookbook for the upcoming H&M | Moschino collaboration has been released and it’s everything we hoped for!

For the past few months, fans have been begging for a peek behind the curtain of H&M and Jeremy Scott’s design laboratory, wondering about what colours, characters, and prices the collection would sport. Well, they’ve finally drawn the curtain back and revealed their brilliant creations for all the world to see.

The collection is bouncing off the walls with energetic colours and fun characters like a glamourised Minnie Mouse and streetwise Donald Duck. There is no shortage of sequins and gold chains in womenswear, menswear, and even petwear! That’s right, there’s even something for your precious pooch to sport to the dog park.

Scott stated “Like all my collections, it’s humour meets haute couture meets the street. That’s been a hallmark of my work for MOSCHINO, and I want to continue to explore that with this collection.”

What really sells the whole lookbook, styled by Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele and photographed by Marcus Mam, is the amazing energy the models are giving off. Dilone, Aquaria, Barbie Ferreira, Ami and Aya, and Teddy Quinlivan are captured having the best time being themselves. We even get some voguing from the stunning Mj Rodriguez from POSE (go watch it, it’s THE BEST).

Prices will range from £30 to £300 so there’s no need to save for months for a jacket, just make sure you’re lined up on release day November 8th!

It’s September, and we all know what that means: New York Fashion Week. We’ve been waiting with baited breath for what our Spring/Summer 2019 wardrobes are going to look like and thankfully the wait is over. It’s safe to say that we have a lot of directions to go in. Designers not just giving us a spring time flower feel, but bold colour and daring designs.

Jeremy Scott caught our eye with a neon colour palette. His array of bold motorcycle jackets, Pikachu printed co-ords and camouflage had us ready for a neon spring. Whilst the colours proved impressive, so did his message: garments read ‘revolt, resist, riot’ among other phrases that would give our spring wardrobe the rebellious kick it needs.

Discount Universe showed their usual sequined goodness, but with a twist. Dresses read ‘not your baby’, ‘not for sale’, playing off societal stereotypes of women with sequined statements of ‘crazy, emotional, irrational’ cinched in at the waist with belts that read ‘whore’. If you’re looking for some feminist statement pieces Discount Universe has you covered.

Whilst others protested real villainous behavior, The Blonds embraced a different approach: becoming the villains…Disney Villains that is. Garments inspired by an array of the deliciously evil characters such as the Queen of Hearts, Maleficent, and Ursula gave us beautifully embellished evil and we loved it.

We’ve been given a plethora of rebellion this spring, and whilst we’re loving this nonconformist edge, we couldn’t help but fall in love with Rodarte’s pastel romance fantasy. Frills, florals and veils floated along the runway, giving us ethereal fairy tale.

Once again, Jeremy Scott had heads turning at his AW18 Moschino runway show in Milan with his otherworldly creations. This truly inspirational man is the epitome of , causing a heap of controversy for this campaign. Scott stated backstage pre-show that he himself was interested in heightening conspiracy theories at times of political unrest. It is evidential that this heavily inspired his extraordinary AW18 collection. But asides all of the uproar this collection caused, let’s talk fashion.

The collection itself can only be described as Jackie O meets futuristic-retro-meets-vibrant-space-age-glam. Ludicrous right? We know. Amongst the 60’s pill-box hats and elbow length gloves, the extrinsic hair and make-up looks were ones not to go unmissed. The infinitely noticeable Jackie O hair was shaped up by hair stylist Paul Hanlon, while the optimistic blue and yellow skin sprays were created by MUA Kabuki.
