It is no secret that Berlin is a modern fashion capital and if you have seen previous BFWs or experienced the city in all its creative glory, it is easy to understand why they have been granted this title. Walking down a street in the city you soon realise the pavements are full of fashion lovers, early adopters and main characters. And Voir is going to be all over it as we fly out to the German capital to give you all the coverage you need. Literally, we will be covering EVERYTHING! We thought we couldn’t leave you that long without some more enticing information about the week, so, let’s find out what is going to be going on before we take flight.

We are so excited to view some amazing collections next month and soak up the atmosphere of the shows. Let’s start by getting familiar with some amazing designers that will be showing and their previous work.

Namilia

Top of our list is brand Namilia. Describing themselves as ‘destroyers of false perception’ we love how they use their designs to capture their vision, dreams, and beliefs. A brand that lives and breathes Berlin and will be catching eyes and headlines with their new AW 23 collection. To name a few as the list is so long, we would be here listing until the show starts, celebs such as Cardi B, Tayce and SZA are all fans of the Berlin based brand. Having BDSM inspired fits, motorcycle influenced leather pieces, techno fits and Y2K styles, they produce the best outfits for Berlin street fashion. We are super excited for them to showcase their new designs on Wednesday the 18^th.

Dennis Chuene

More excitement comes as Dennis Chuene’s collection showcases on Tuesday the 17^th of January. His influence and use of nostalgia creates contemporary designs which are finely crafted with recycled materials. A lot of his work which focuses on the use of string craftmanship gives us unique pieces which are thought provoking. Chuen places emphasis on story telling behind his designs which take influence from current affairs and everyday struggles.

Iden Studios

Only founded last year this brand is striving in the fashion scene. Modern and cool designs from this Berlin based brand is the expectation which they keep meeting. We believe their show will be no different and have us talking about them for weeks. Intangible meets tangible as their main source of inspiration stems from spirituality, emotions and the digital world. They are futuristic and they are fantastic. We can’t wait to see what they pull out the bag for their newest collection.

Damur

One of the winners of BFW’s contemporary category is high-end streetwear Berlin brand, Damur. They are a brand to watch as designer, Huang Damur, pushes the boundaries and limitations of fashion and societal norms. The ‘Reviver’ collection for AW 23 has been fully upcycled from his previous collections, putting pressure and light on second-life clothing. This will be a show you don’t want to miss.

Olivia Ballard

Established in 2020, German based designer brand, Olivia Ballard, is a new and forward-thinking brand. Creating genderless clothing which specialises in fabric manipulation to harmonise effortlessly with the body, they are one to watch. Inclusivity and diversity are at the heart of this fashion forward brand and we can’t wait to see how they develop their ideas in the coming years. Sheer has been a huge success with Olivia Ballard and has promoted body diversity and confidence while being super on trend.

Lou De Bètoly

French designer based in Berlin, Loe de Bètoly, will also be showcasing her latest collection at BFW. It is not surprising that her designs follow punk inspiration as her use of ripped and deconstructed clothing is very evident. Influence is also taken from surrealism and oneirism which gives her collections a dreamlike disturbance. The ominous aesthetic of her designs make them so memorable and enticing.

Sia Arnika

Danish label trying to redesign the fashion industry with slow and sustainable fashion design, Sia Arnika, is on our radar. Moving away from typical Berlin rave attire, she ties maximalism detail with minimalism design. She has a special talent of creating timeless styles which are extremely fitting for the moment and climate. BFW welcomes her with open arms and we are looking forward to what she will show during her runway.

Of course, what is a fashion week, without our favourite style icons in attendance. Usually lining the front seats in anticipation for the unexpected, influencers and celebrities are just as invested in the upcoming trends as industry professionals. Berlin has seen the likes of Winnie Harlow and Tyra Banks at their fashion week and next year we can only assume front rows will be star studded. But, don’t worry you can rely on us to report back with who we see in attendance and of course, what they will be wearing.

January alone has felt like a lifetime for a lot of us as 2021 starts in full swing. As the first four weeks are often seen as a taster for the year to come, we certainly hope this is true for music, as the month has delivered some insane songs, long awaited collabs and iconic music videos. 

Madison Beer – BOYSHIT 

Madison gave us picturesque power this week with the release of her music video for her latest single ‘BOYSHIT’, a track that will also feature on her album Life Support, coming out on February 26th. The video screams female empowerment as Madison teaches her friends how to ignore boys, with chandeliers and corsets shot under a golden hour hue. The song and video are both iconic, and give us promises for a good album ahead.

Black Eyed Peas Ft. Shakira – GIRL LIKE ME Vevo Footnotes

The Black Eyed Peas released a Vevo footnotes video this week, following their iconic collaboration with Shakira last month for the song ‘GIRL LIKE ME’. The footnotes are a great addition to the video, as it’s revealed that the project was 12 years in the making, and the video’s strong visuals are explained.

2 Chainz – Grey Area

2 Chainz joined the list of January’s memorable music videos as he takes magic mushrooms and swaps heads with his dog to ‘Grey Area’ from his recent album So Help Me God! The trippy video fits with the surrealism of the Rappers latest visuals, and shows a very 70s colour palette and graphic, consistent with his music video for ‘Can’t Go For That’ from November.

Selena Gomez, Rauw Alejandro – Baila Conmigo

Selena’s recent reggaeton project with Puerto Rican rapper Rauw Alejandro transports us to somewhere sunny during isolation, as Gomez creates a connection between people through music as she stays sultry and silhouetted on a tv screen. ‘Baila Conmigo’ comes as the second visual released before the singers first ever All-Spanish EP, Revelación, set to come out in March – another thing to look forward to.

Busta Rhymes ft. CJ and M.O.P – Czar (Remix)

Busta Rhymes reminded us of his legendary presence after last year’s album Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God with the remix and visual for the track ‘Czar’. Much like the track’s sound, the rappers keep it classic in the video, with greyscale and a plain white backdrop. It’s release, two months after the album’s deluxe version was dropped, implies there’s more coming from Busta Rhymes’ return, and we hope there is, after 11 years without anything new from his powerful music.

Guaynaa, Pain Digital – Monterrey

Puerto Rican Reggaeton star Guaynaa released a new party single this week, ‘Monterrey’, with an accompanying music video. Both the song and video pay homage to the Mexican city where his success began after Puerto Rico, while keeping the flirty, witty sound and imagery of Guaynaa’s other projects.

This past week alone is the perfect example for what we can expect of music this year, across all genres and from artists old and new. In the month that had us all crying over a 17 year-old’s teen heartbreak and saw a collaboration first announced two years before, we can start to believe that this year won’t be so bad.

January. Cold, bleak, dull. Not the most inspiring conditions for that ‘new year health kick’ we’ve all been planning since purchasing the first Terry’s chocolate orange of the festive season. What is even less inspiring is when you find yourself in the middle of January, you hop on the scales ready for them to tell you you’ve dropped a stone and the number is two pounds less than it was.

After practically surviving on dust for two weeks, whilst begrudgingly forcing yourself to peel yourself out of your nice cosy bed at stupid-o-clock to awkwardly perch your bum on an uncomfortably hard bicycle seat whilst someone yells at you to ‘PEDAL FASTER, PUSH THROUGH THE PAIN’ under the (quite frankly) irritating flashing lights and overwhelmingly loud pumping music of the spin studio, whilst reassuringly reminding you that ‘WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER’.

After the two weeks of hell you’ve put yourself through…TWO POUNDS!

The novelty of re-inventing yourself as one of those people who gets up at 4am to fit in the time to 1. Exercise and 2. Muster up the motivation to convince yourself you want to exercise has just about worn off by now. Is your body filled with a surge of pure heart-sinking dread when you are rudely awoken by the irritating trill of your alarm named ‘GYM!!! (bicep emoji, bicep emoji)?

Do you find yourself really needing to organise the contents of your fridge in alphabetical order, having to rip your loo roll into individual pieces and realising the importance of organising that pack of cheerios into lights, mediums and darks; all a subconscious effort to justify not going to exercise?

And now it is going to help you get over your case of the ‘January slump’.

YouTube is brimming with thousands of dance-based exercise videos. Everything from Broadway-themed cardio dance routines from Joseph Corella to Leilah Isaac’s Belly dance fitness cardio fat burn. You no longer have to mortify yourself in the sweaty, red-faced dash from the class studio to the changing rooms past the weights section (obvious reasons).

Cancel that fitness membership that is draining your bank account and soul, and exercise in the comfort and privacy of your own home. You need that feeling of dread you now associate with exercise to simply evaporate away to enable you to enjoy it again.
