So, hosted by Derek Blasberg (the platform’s Head of Fashion and Beauty) The YouTube Beauty Festival will premier on our screens on the 14th of May. The virtual summit will include timely panel discussions and informative beauty segments, all with major celebrity guests and YouTube content creators alike. 

What a lineup it is. The festival spotlights celebrity beauty brand owners like Miranda Kerr (Kora Organics), Jessica Alba (The Honest Company), Milly Bobby Brown (Florence by Mills) and Pharrell Williams (Humanrace). Although they will be chatting about generally entertaining and useful information, it will also include “important conversations about amplifying diversity and equality across the beauty landscape.”

Additionally, there is also a chance to tune in to segments such as Ask a Drag Queen with RuPaul’s Drag Race winners Bob the Drag Queen and Monet X Change, the Black Beauty Founder Roundtable with YouTube’s Head of Creators Chanel Tyler and Pharrell Glow, where the founder and musician Pharrell Williams reveals his secrets on how he stays so youthful. Speaking to People.com Blasberg explained:

‘One of the first people I thought of when we were coming up with concepts for this festival was Pharrell Williams. Have you seen recent pictures of this man? He has not aged a day in, like, three decades. What’s the secret to his glow? He agreed to go over his beauty routine with three of YouTube’s top beauty creators, Asia Jackson, Sylvia Gani, and Nailea.’

We’ve never heard a truer word. How has he achieved this Benjamin Button status? We will be tuning in to find out!

Well before coronavirus turned our world upside down, foundation shopping (and shade matching) was a tricky business. Different finishes, strengths of pigment, and a kaleidoscope of undertones; getting it right can feel like a maze and It has been known to challenge casual buyers and make-up professionals alike. Even YouTube icon James Charles has admitted that he has battled to find a perfect foundation match.

Finding My PERFECT Foundation Match… Finally

Relying on online swatches for the likes of eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks is (for the most part) a safe gamble but traditionally foundation shopping requires a closer inspection in- store. We’ve all done the classic trick of applying a tester swatch and running out the store to quickly catch a view of the shade in natural lighting but in a post-coronavirus world, it seems make-up testers are set to become a thing of the past. The hygiene of beauty testers has frequently been called into question and parting with them IS in the interest of public health but now, how do we go about finding our perfect shade?

Identifying Undertones

‘Find your undertone’ is a phrase passed around a lot in the beauty world but let’s start by explaining what an undertone actually is. An undertone is a tone/colour that underlies your skin and there are three to choose from – warm (yellow and gold), cool (pink and blue), and neutral (a mix of both warm and cool). Knowing your undertone will make the whole process of online foundation shopping much easier and convenient, many brands indicate the undertones of a foundation within the shade name, typically represented by the first letter of the undertone – W, C, or N.

There are plenty of tricks to decode which undertone you personally have. A classic example is to take a glance at the colour of your veins. Experts suggest that blue-toned veins indicate a cool tone whereas green suggests a warmer tone. Similarly, trying on gold and silver jewellery can give a helpful insight into skin undertones. If you glow in gold, then you may sway towards a warm undertone or perhaps you shine in silver in which case, cooler tones could be your perfect match. Or maybe you love both (us too!), so neutral tones are your preference.

For the most part, a good bare-faced look in the mirror in natural lighting can offer a fair indication of what your undertone is but If in doubt, selecting a neutral shade is the safest bet for creating a well-matched base.

Selecting the Right Shade

Very fair, fair, light, light medium, medium, dark, very dark – feeling overwhelmed? It’s a lot simpler than it seems and far more obvious than deciphering undertones. These are the descriptors typically used by a wide range of make-up brands and luckily, once you crack which shade you are in one brand, it’s a safe conclusion that you’ll probably be the same in another.

Websites often offer a clear description of the shades and some have even introduced photos of models corresponding to each foundation colour which enables you to easily compare your own skin to a model of a similar shade; making colour matching almost as visual as being in the physical store.

Read Reviews

Never underestimate the importance of reading reviews from fellow shoppers. While many brands will claim their foundation is the key to achieving flawless skin, customer reviews allow us to see which products are really up to scratch away from the biases of Instagram advertisements and YouTube sponsorships.

Coverage, longevity and how it feels on the skin – these are all things that are commented on in reviews and they are important qualities worth investigating before committing to an online purchase. If you are sceptical of reviews on brand sites then there are online forums such as MakeupAlley which offer a wide range of honest and fair reviews.

Take a Brand Quiz

Luckily, many brands such as Too Faced, BareMinerals and Maybelline have noticed a rise in online foundation shopping and in turn, have created clever quizzes to match their potential customers to their perfect foundation. Answering just a handful of questions on their sites will help their algorithm suggest a good foundation for your skin type, desired coverage and the ideal shade for you too. How fancy?

Findation.com is a project that launched in 2012 and it is taking all the hard work out of onlinefoundation matching. Utilising their enormous database of shades, Findation allows you to enter two foundation shades that you have used and loved before from a range of brands. From there, their clever search engine can curate a list of shades from other beauty brands of a similar tone and colour that are set to match you perfectly.

The online YouTube beauty community comes together to rally against the Corona Virus outbreak with the biggest beauty YouTube Collab.

James Charles, a known icon in the beauty community, recently came together with some of his friends to film a fundraiser video to raise funds for the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO. The video has managed to raise just under five million dollars after Google pledged to match and double every initial public donation.

The group filmed a Collab get ready with me with a different influencer doing different parts of the makeup challenge. The video featured YouTube stars like Nikkie Tutorials, Patrick Star, Bretman Rock, Glam&Gore, Manny MUA, and even Nikita Dragun who has previously worked with Voir and appeared on our recent Voir Fashion Issue 25: Meet The New Gen Warriors!

One of the few positive effects of the Corona Virus has brought is that now more than ever the world can unite under a common problem and we all understand the common struggle of being under lockdown and the fear it brings to everyone. Even the online beauty community which seems to have a scandal every other day has come together with efforts like those of James Charles and Beauty United. To raise funds and support their surrounding communities.

We’ve gathered five easy-to-try eye looks for you to experiment with. Explore your neglected palettes and get creative and release your very own inner James Charles.

Floating Liner

Whilst a coloured liner would be the easiest option to complete this bold look, an angled brush, setting spray and an eyeshadow of your choice will do the trick nicely. For a more subtle wearable look, use more muted shades keeping to those suited to your eye colour. Terracotta tones are great all-rounders and one you’re most likely to have. Use your eyeliner or spray your brush and dip into your shadow to create a thin curve at your crease. If you’re feeling funky, try a neon or black.

Concealer Cut Crease

Time to attempt full glam. A technique often seen used by beauty bloggers or YouTubers but a step frequently skipped when on the go. Try packing on a deeper base shade across the outer corner and into the crease. Using a flat precision brush with your concealer to create a sharp cut crease, starting from the inner corner across to the middle of the lid. Use a glitter or shimmer shade to highlight the inner to the centre of the lid and make it pop, finishing with a transition shade to blend out into the brow bone. Remember to use your face highlight for your inner corners to tie the whole look together.

Pop of Colour

This fun idea is a way to incorporate colour into your eye looks without taking it to full glam. Apply a neutral transition colour all over your lid suiting to your skin tone and go in with a slightly deeper tone in the crease if you desire more dimension, still only applying little product. Taking a smaller brush, use a bright colour of your choice and apply in one specific area. The inner corner or across the lower lash line are great examples. With a clean softer brush, blend out and use a similarly coloured liner or brown/black in your waterline to tie it all together.

Glossy Lid

Gone are the days of our matte addiction as we enter a new phase: the glossy edition. Of course, there are many great brands that have gel or gloss eyeshadows or even general face products to apply before or after base products to add a glow. However, there is also a quick solution that in our current days of social distancing, might just be the answer. Lip gloss. Pick up your glossiest, smoothest, non-stick lip gloss and apply after your desired base shadow. To be more precise, try applying the gloss on the back of your hand and use your finger to dab onto your lid.

Outer-Corner Liner

An unusual twist on your everyday cat eye, this design adds more interest with even less skill needed. Try using multicoloured liner pens, or glitter shadows to brighten up the geometric line. Use a concealer close to your skin colour to act as a base, with a similarly shaded shadow over the lid. This will create a smooth finish across your eyes which will then be made interesting by your outer-corner liner. This shape is very flattering as it mirrors the cat-eye wing, alluding to bigger, almond-shaped eyes.

Multi-layered and messy plaits that look so intricate and detailed but are so easy and effortless will keep your hair off you keeping you cool whilst your boogying on the fields.
