Zendaya has earned herself the title of a fashion icon over the last years, and being this year’s co-hostess of the Gala (together with Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth), she proved there is no coincidence in that. You think one peacock-like, mind-blowing gown is enough? Not for Zendaya. She left us obsessed with two looks by John Galliano, one from Maison Margiela, evoking this year’s iconic Artisanal show in Paris, and the other one from Givenchy Haute Couture SS 1996. So, let’s get to the details shall we? The Maison Margiela look was a blue-green, glowing mesh dress with golden-blue-green fruit and leaves ornaments, and an impressive decorative back. And just look at the other-worldly makeup – do we need to say anything more? Now, the Givenchy look was a mottled grey silk gown with a long trail, complemented by a pink-white-yellow, bouquet-like hat. Hats off!

Jennifer Lopez equals classy, powerful, and sexy femininity. Opting for a richly ornamented, semi-transparent, silver Schiaparelli gown by Daniel Roseberry, she made an incredible impression both with her glimmering outfit and her flawless body shape. The dress was inspired by butterfly wings, whose shiny embroidery with “warm silver pearls, rhinestones, and 2 500 000 silver foul bugles and beads” took over 800 hours to be completed, as Schiaparelli report. How would we sum up the look? Powerful, yet fragile; glowing, yet delicate, even spiderweb-like. The essence of “The Garden of Time.”

Janelle Monáe’s custom dress by Vera Wang is a perfect embodiment of such an approach to the Gala’s theme, as the cherry of top of the glittering, opalescent, laser-cut sequins gown is a transparent flower on Janelle’s arm – and suffice it to say that this lovely flower is a product of the recycling process of plastic bottles. It’s here that fashion meets rebirth, re-usage, and passage of time – or, actually, finding a way around it. And frankly speaking, that’s what sustainable fashion should be about.

What’s special about Mona Patel’s gown from Iris van Herpen? It’s not just that the dress looks like multiple butterfly wings. Her natural eyes and skin allowed her dramatic facial makeup of patterns on her forehead and nose to demand attention. The eye-catching look is bold and unique and is truly mesmerising as it evokes a dramatic and empowering image that the singer rocks so well. The lack of defined brows made her beautiful brown eyes and eye make pop and accentuated her face beautifully. The glossy lips were the final touch to finishing this look off as they allowed her eyes to glisten beautifully. The stunning Elsa Hosk owned the cold girl winter aesthetic in her make-up look and outfit as her make-up screamed winter and snow. The bold eyeliner that accompanied the shimmer eyeshadow provides both drama and a doe-eyed effect. Jessica Wang styled an eye-catching combo by Marc Jacobs and truly demanded attention with her matching eyeshadows that accompanied the dress and the sexy nude pink lips that accompanied her look so well. The beauty had a fierce but thin eyeliner that accompanied her popping eyeshadow which both added drama to her look but also a fun disco aesthetic with the bright pop of colour. Once again, she championed natural dewy skin and minimal contouring and blush which truly allowed her eyes to do the talking. The subtle gloss to the lips allowed them to look plump and luscious and made her look sexy but fun and light.

Lastly, the stunning Simone Ashley with her shimmering goddess-style look and wet sexy hair is one that demanded the attention of the masses. The actress rocked a shimmery natural lip accompanied by silver eyeshadow that complimented her figure-hugging dress so well. Her wet-looking hair added an aspect of effortless sexiness to the look and her natural make-up once again allowed the eyes and the dress to do the talking. Her wet hair aesthetic can be easily replicated by using a styling gel or a glossing spray to create the wet look that she styles so effortlessly. She shimmered and glowed with this makeup look and her natural fluffy brows provided a very au natural and effortless make-up look for the actress.

It was Novruzova’s shoes in particular that went viral on the Internet, after being worn by a host of celebs, for their instantly recognisable square toes and creased front. Available in a range of shades, we can see why they’re every fashionista’s must-have.

The Central Saint Martins graduate was born to Azerbaijani parents and raised in Moldova. Novruzova told Vogue: “This is embarrassing, but my interest in fashion started from Blogspot. I remember being mesmerised by the supermodels of the time, as well – like Natasha Poly, Daria Werbowy and Abbey Lee – and then I just learned more about clothes through absorbing the internet.”

After completing her first year, the designer enrolled in the BA fashion and marketing program, with her final collection winning the L’Oréal Professional Young Talent Awards third runner-up prize. Afterward, she moved back to Moldova and launched her label, debuting her retro-futuristic AW21 collection.

“Anyone with an immigrant mum would agree – Princess Di is always the ultimate style icon, and it would’ve been a dream come true to see her wearing my clothes,” she told Vogue.

Aitch, Bakar – In Disguise

Giving us 2010’s British rap realness this month is Aitch and Bakar, with cheeky lyrics and guitar motifs that inject unmistakable energy into this track. One thing is for sure; we will be pressing our replay button on this one!

FKA twigs featuring Rema – jealousy

January 14th saw the release of FKA twigs’ highly anticipated album ‘CAPRISONGS’ (named perfectly for a Capricorn season release). Twigs has described this album as a ‘journey back to herself through amazing collaborators and friends’, which we feel is a joy to listen to. You can feel that twigs pushed to intertwine aspects of her life throughout this album, with voice notes and recordings of her friends’ conversations used in many songs, creating a personal experience when listening to the album in full. The record is bursting with collaborations, coming from the likes of Pa Salieu, Rema, Jorja Smith and The Weeknd. 

Adele – Oh My God 

Now, we all know this track came out with Adele’s album ‘30’ back in November, but we are a sucker for a good music video! Perhaps one of the most upbeat Adele tracks, this video accentuates the song’s euphoric feeling with a fun and artistic angle. Throughout the video, Adele is sat amongst a large group of dancers, who deliver a contemporary and modern performance using chairs as props. At the end of the video, a chair is set alight, delivering a final blow to this monumental video and song. 

Poppy Ajudha – Holiday From Reality

With over 17 million TikTok followers, it’s safe to say Abby has made a name for herself in the social media world. But, she is now taking an interest in the music industry, having released her debut single ‘Paramaniac’ on January 13th. The track could easily be a backing track used on one of Abby’s relatable videos she often posts on TikTok regarding mental health, and it’s clear that the lyrics of this song have a special meaning to Abby. 

Chronicles- Cordae Featuring H.E.R. and Lil Durk

Coming as part of Cordae’s latest album ‘From a Birds Eye View’, this track delivers a chilled-out, rich R&B sound that will get you vibing along with the infectious beat. Raveena – Rush

Delivering some culture into our playlists this month is the groundbreaking, Raveena. Released on January 14th, the track is an ode to Bollywood which takes us on a journey of a Punjabi princess travelling through space. Speaking on the track, Raveena said;

“The song was the genesis of me exploring a more intense marriage between Bollywood sounds and the pop/R&B music that I grew up on in America.” 

And, with Raveena recently signing to Warner Records, we suspect that 2022 could be a big year for the rising star. 

The Weeknd – Sacrifice

If you haven’t already listened to The Weeknd’s latest album ‘Dawn FM’, you need to! Expanding on the retro 80s influence heard in ‘Blinding Lights’, this album is sure to tick many boxers for listeners. Similarly to The Weeknd’s previous album ‘After Hours’, he commits to a character throughout the record, creating a cohesive effect to his artistry. The album also comes with a concept, in which ‘Dawn FM’ acts as a radio station to transition you to the other side. Our favourite track is ‘Sacrifice’, which encapsulates the 80s energy, paired with a creative and visually virtuosic music video.  

Katy Perry – When I’m Gone

Currently causing a stir in Vegas, we couldn’t help but include Katy’s recent release for you to check out! If you’re looking for a song to get yourself hyped up and in a good mood, ‘When I’m Gone’ is the one for you. The track sees Perry team up with Alesso to create a vibrant dance-pop style song, sure to get you up and moving!

Stromae – L’enfer 

We are so excited for Stromae’s upcoming album ‘Multitude’ on March 4th, marking over eight years since his last album! His latest track ‘L’enfer’ has given us an insight into what we could be in for, with a much more personal meaning than his previous big hits. ‘L’enfer’ sees Stromae open up on his battle with suicidal thoughts, as he sings candidly over a haunting choir and piano accompaniment.

For The Weeknd, ‘Tears In The Club’ comes after a string of exciting collaborations, having recently teamed up with Rosalia for ‘LA FAMA’’ and Post Malone for ‘One Right Now’. 

The song was co-produced by Arca, Cirkut, and El Guincho, resulting in an electronic R&B dance style sure to get you moving whilst thinking about troubles in your love life. 

This is the first time twigs and The Weeknd have collaborated, and we have to say, their sounds match together seamlessly. It’s a song that could feature on either artist’s album, as both unique styles are showcased in the best way possible. 

Another highlight of this pairing is the music video, which sees the duo’s faces soaked with tears as they sing lyrics surrounding the concept of wishing they weren’t tied down by someone else. Similarly to The Weeknd’s video with Rosalia, he remains seated whilst twigs performs a dance routine. Twigs then goes on to perform choreo with a large group, further showcasing her incredible talents.

Burberry has just dropped a massive advertising campaign to push its signature bag, the Olympia.

Now that we are all getting out and about again, the brand’s latest push recruits FKA twigs, Kendall Jenner and Shygirl to promote the over-the-shoulder accessory. In a statement, Creative Chief of Burberry Riccardo Tisci said:

“When designing the Olympia, I was thinking about creating the perfect form of a handbag – something that could capture the essence of femininity. So, for the campaign, I wanted to celebrate three incredible women in my life who embody the power and beauty of feminine energy: FKA twigs, Kendall and Shygirl. These women are amazingly talented and confident, and have a natural fierceness and determination to carve their own paths, each freely expressing their originality through their creativity.”

The brand hails these women as ‘modern goddesses’ wearing the Olympia in an ‘ancient world reimagined’. The bag takes on a beautifully classic, sculptural form in its crescent shape – a modern take on a timeless piece.

You’ll be able to pick one up at the series of Olympia-themed pop-ups scattered around department stores of the brand’s key retail partners – including Harrods, Goodman, Galaxy Macau and Nanjing Deji Plaza. FKA Twigs has always been vocal about her feminist intentions and her support for all women. But in the last few months, the almost outlandish Gloucester artist has used her platform to give to the women suffering greatly during this pandemic.

In July Twigs released a new short film with WeTransfer’s WePresent platform, documenting her performance at an Afropunk festival in Atlanta and a trip to the Georgia capital’s first black strip club. ‘We Are The Womxn’ showed a spiritual healer named Queen Afua performing a sacred moon dance with the ‘Cellophane’ singer, a liberating ritual to “elevate the womxn”.

After the emotional ceremony, the narrative moves to the strip club Blue Flame, a landmark in Atlanta since the 80s. Twigs explained this part of the performance and film as a way to honour the heritage of pole dancing, something close to her heart since the concept of her ‘Cellophane’ music video last year, she reiterated her reasoning was also “to create a matriarchal dominance in a space that’s usually filled with, and run by, male energy”.

FKA Twigs- We Are The Womxn Official Video

At the beginning of this month, Twigs took to her Instagram to talk about supporting sex workers and her own experience working in gentlemen’s clubs at the age of 19 – “I feel like now is the time for me to step forward, pay respect, and shine a light on the challenges facing sex workers, especially during these uncertain times. sex workers I know and have met have discipline, craft, talent and work ethic – not only do they deserve better long-term, but their income has been wiped out by the lockdown and many are invisible to the financial aid available to others.”– she wrote, under a dark, insignificant image of herself.

She continued by announcing that three grassroots sex worker organisations would be taking over her social media channels and that she was donating £10,000 as a starter fund for the organisations. The collectives in charge of the takeover were SWARM, Lysistrata Mutual Care Collective, and the East London Stripper Collective; three organisations dedicated to supporting and protecting sex workers from injustice and criminalisation, each of whom shared their manifestos and further collective lists over the following week along with poems and beautiful photographs of strip club culture and protests.
