Just like the other two lines, Boots decided to keep it simple with this one. The Vitamin C line is made for anyone struggling with dull and uneven skin (it’s been a long winter – I think all of us could use a little bit of this). The top-rated products from this range are, of course, the beloved Vitamin C Brightening Moisturising Cream – a light textured moisturiser that evens out skin tone – the Vitamin C Toner – an alcohol-free formula that tightens and refines pores – and the Vitamin C Brightening Cleansing Gel – a deep cleansing gel that reduced excess oils.

]]> This April is an exciting time in the beauty world. Spring’s on its way and so is a whole bunch of new skincare and beauty products! Here’s everyone thing you need to know about the upcoming beauty launches this April.

1. The Ordinary Post-Acne Treatment

The Ordinary are usually quite secretive with their launches, and this launch coming up on March 28th has us at the edge of our seats. Teasing a photo of the product on Instagram captioned “bounce back after breakouts”, The Ordinary announced a live stream on the day of the launch to reveal the product and answer a few of their customer’s questions about it. From what we know, it seems to be a post-acne treatment serum, made to target acne scars.

We don’t know about you, but we’re super excited about this launch.

2. Boots Glow Illuminating Mist

The Boots Glow range has been largely successful since its launch in mid-2020. The range offers a wide variety of products – from serums to moisturisers to lip masks – at an incredibly low price. The new product is an illuminating mist, similar to their brightening mist, except it gives a much more dewy finish – and we all know that the dewy look is having a bit of a moment right now.

3. Kiehl’s Ultra Pure High-Potency Serums

This range of serums consists of the Niacinamide Serum (for oily skin), Hyaluronic Acid Serum (for dry skin and Glycolic Acid Serum (for textured skin), all of which provide visible results within mere weeks. They have received so many positive reviews from their global customers and we can’t wait for them to launch in the UK so we can get our hands on them. These 3 serums will be launching in Selfridges on April 5th.

4. Gucci Make-up Quads

These beautiful gold palettes launch on April 1st at Selfridges, and we’ve already started our countdowns because we can’t wait to get our hands on them. There are three different palettes coming out and, although they may just look like eyeshadows, these little guys can be used all over the face as highlighters and blushes and even lips.

Lexi Jong talked through two out of the three palettes in a video posted to YouTube. The highly pigmented products boasted a very sophisticated array of colours as she swatched the shades on her arm.

5. Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja

Maison Crivelli is a niche fragrance house with a brand-new fragrance coming out on April 1st at Selfridges. This new product featured a vibrant, passionfruit-infused scent. Their products usually feature more classy and modern fragrances and we simply can’t wait for this new fragrance to blow our minds.

Finding that perfect foundation or blush shade is hard enough, and near impossible to do online. Leaving it a purchase almost everyone makes in-store. However, the days of swiping a product across the back of your hand may be behind us. Or at least for now. So, what exactly is going to be the ‘new normal’ when it comes to makeup shopping? Well, it’s safe to say, it won’t be the same as pre-pandemic.

From the 15th June, non-essential stores can begin the process of opening their doors; including 200 Boots stores and retailers such as SpaceNK, lush and department stores. While self-selection counters housing brands like Rimmel, Maybelline and L’Oreal were always accessible, high-end beauty counters will be opening up next week. However, there will be a few changes.

For those of us who are rather picky when it comes to makeup shopping, using testers are a perfect way around the struggle. Well, until things go back to normal, makeup, skincare and fragrance testers will be removed from the counters. Once they are back, they will only be provided by beauty advisors. I know, if choosing the right shade wasn’t hard already, it just became ten times worse.

Makeup Consultations

We all love going for a professional makeup consultation to top up our skills. Well, don’t be counting on one any time soon. Well, at least a proper one. Consultations will be contactless. Meaning a beauty advisor won’t be able to apply the makeup but can stand away wearing their PPE to offer tips and advice while you apply your own makeup. Not exactly the consultation we are all used to, right?

Virtual Try-On Experiences

You what? Well, essentially apps will be used that allow you to digitally try on everything from lipstick to lashes. It may not come with the same hands-on experience but will give you a good indication of what product suits you. We are really stepping into the 21st century here.

While, as a customer, you won’t need to wear any protective clothing, as expected beauty specialists will be wearing full PPE and will sterilize the store throughout the day. And get prepared to see a lot of hand gel and social distancing procedures around; if you haven’t noticed it already.

So, whether it’s grabbing your go-to concealer or spending too much cash on a shadow palette you never knew you needed, going on a guilt-free makeup spree just won’t feel the same. But it’s certain that retailers are doing all they can to keep everyone safe.

Domestic abuse is on the rise, we spoke to Sarah Davidge from Women’s Aid to discuss the impact Covid-19 is having on victims of abuse

Two weeks after the lockdown was announced on 23rd March, 10 women and 2 children had been killed at home by men in the UK. As more time has passed, there are now 16 suspected domestic violence murders across the country. The National Domestic Abuse helpline has seen a 25% increase in calls, along with a 150% increase of visits to their website since February, and the number of domestic violence-related arrests are totalling to an average of 100 a day across the UK.

Domestic abuse is not solely physical, it comes in many ugly forms and could be happening without you realising. If your partner is manipulating any form of control over you, be that psychological, emotional, physical, financial, or sexual then you are a victim of abuse. If your partner is controlling your communication with others either online or in person, then you are a victim of abuse.

Speaking to Sarah Davidge, Research and Evaluation Manager at Women’s Aid, there is a serious concern that this pandemic is threatening to escalate such forms of abuse. Survivors have explained to the organisation how perpetrators are ‘’using Covid-19 as part of their abuse and failing to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus’’.

There is also an increasing worry that for survivors of domestic abuse, there is reduced access to support services. Sarah explained how from experience, Women’s Aid knows that ‘’without urgent action, our life-saving national network of domestic abuse services could be overwhelmed by the scale of need. Every major disaster and pandemic globally have shown us that.’’ The timing of this pandemic is also something Women Aid is anxious about, with Sarah stressing how the domestic abuse sector has been facing a funding crisis with ‘’the number of refuge bed spaces in England already 30% below the number recommended by the Council of Europe’’.

However, positive steps are being made to combat domestic violence. On 3rd March 2020, the government re-introduced the domestic abuse bill in Parliament, this has the potential to create a significant change in the way we respond to this issue and to help create a more effective approach on tackling abuse. Last week in Parliament, the government announced their pledge to fund £76 million for charities across the UK to help survivors of domestic and sexual abuse as well as victims of modern-day slavery. Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick addressed the public and stated that no one has to choose between staying somewhere unsafe or becoming homeless. The secretary also announced that victims of domestic violence will receive priority for local housing, adding: “the true evil of domestic abuse is that it leaves vulnerable people including children living in fear in the very place where they should feel most safe and secure: inside their own home.”

Somewhere in-between the excessive amounts of money I spend on maintaining my tan and the latest you-tube beauty fads I convince myself I cannot carry on living my life without, and the money I reluctantly part with to maintain fundamental necessities like heating and food, is a vast black hole. A black hole that has an inescapable magnetic force that uproots my hard-earned cash from the safety of my purse, drawing it into the purchasing of shoes against my will.

However, amongst the fountain of shoes spilling from my shoe bin and the once neat singular layer of my more pricey footwear purchases that has now turned into a double, no (who am I trying to kid) triple decker shoe sandwich, there is one form of footwear that (like the black hole that pulled me to hoarding this abundance of shoes in the first place) that season after season, year after year I gravitate towards.

The black boot. Got a drinks date and want to look nice enough to be asked on a second date but don’t want to be tottering into your local boozer in stilettos? Black boot. Stressing about your outfit for an interview being too casual? Black boot. The accomplished shapeshifter of the footwear world. Managing to take you from doing the weekly shop, to a night out and any event in-between, and look appropriate.

It was in Prada’s Autumn/Winter Ready To Wear Collection that the trusty backbone of my own, and many a shoe-hoarder’s collection was re-incarnated. A-symmetrical necklines in bright pink and red satin skimmed the models’ chests, with the hem lines of the gowns just grazing the model’s calves as they stomped down the catwalk, displaying the boot in question in all it’s glory; an army of heavy-duty elegance. A mash-up of builder’s steel-toe capped boots and the intimidating platformed lace-up numbers (those of a gothic tendency choose to wear). An interesting duo of inspiration, yet when fashioned from the smooth, dark buttery leather and elegantly embossed on the tongue with the classic Prada badge, it works. I mean, it’s Prada, of course it works!?

A certain half Dutch, half Palestinian, 5 foot 7, 23 year old stepped out of her hotel onto the streets of Paris fashion week in a pair of the said boots. Miss Bella Hadid, the girl who possesses the power to make the pastel, diamante embellished, velour, low-rise blur of the 2000’s go from the decade fashion purposely forgot, to baby-doll dresses, matching tracksuits and rectangular semi-opaque shades being a crucial part of most people’s wardrobe. Yet again, Bella so much as walks past something- it turns into a trend.

The jarringly preppy matchy-matchy bubble-gum pink blazer and shirt combo was kept casual with the unbuttoned blazer revealing the top of the high-waisted mom-jeans. The flatteringly loose legs of the jeans were roughly tucked into the top of the laced up boots, showing them off in all their calf-length glory. Accessorising the look with a baguette-style black leather shoulder bag swinging from the baby-pink structured shoulder pad of her jacket, face severely covered underneath a black NY baseball cap, and typically Bella rectangular shades- a fond nod to her favourite decade.

It is a simple fact that the vast majority of people can’t afford to part with the equivalent of 4 month’s rent over a matter of footwear, however great the pull of the black hole. So, we have to thank our trusted old friends; ASOS and Zara, whose price tags make for more comfortable shopping, for cashing in on the ‘Bella effect’ creating a couple of pairs with suspicious similarities to the Prada Monolith leather boot. Not that we’re complaining, because they have allowed even us mere mortals to be able to appreciate the re-birth of the evergreen of the shoe world who’s fashion longevity is a sturdy as their soles.
