]]> PFW might be over, but Tommy Genesis and the Martinez Brothers are keeping the late-night celebration going with their new single ‘PFW’. Tommy’s breathy whispers are overlaid with the hypnotic low beats and pulsing drums of The Martinez Brothers in a way that roars club anthem. Injected with the hedonism and pleasure typical of a fashion show afterparty, this is their second collaboration after the 2021 fan-favorite ‘a woman is a god’ track.

For Genesis, this is also her first song after being featured in Lana Del Rey’s album earlier this year and releasing her own critically acclaimed album ‘goldilocks x’. Born in Vancouver but based in LA, Tommy’s blur of genres and embrace of her sexuality is what led her to develop a cult following with her self-titled debut. The song name ‘PFW’ makes sense for the self proclaimed fetish rapper, who’s considered a style innovator and has had a very busy New York Fashion Week (she was at the Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, and Priscavera shows). Genesis was also one of Versace’s muses for their AW17 campaign and has been a Fenty ambassador since 2019. Rihanna even hand-picked and interviewed her for the Rihannazine, a special issue of i-D curated by her.

The global popstar is not the only major artist that noticed Tommy’s avant-garde rap and orgasmic adlibs; she’s since collaborated with Deb Never in ‘Same’, been featured in Charli XCX tandem track Bricks, and joined efforts with Jozzy for ‘Gone’, a track heard on the widely popular HBO’s Euphoria. Her alluring wordplay and subversive quirkiness also put her onto mainstream media, with her art featured on shows like Issa Rae’s Insecure, the film Assassination Nation, and Netflix’s Grand Army.

For NY-born and raised brothers Stevie and Chris, PFW introduces a new, exciting era in their eminent careers. Two staple names in the house genre, their four-to-the-floor rhythm has led them to play all over the world: from the Kappa Futur Festival in Italy and Fabrik Madrid to the III Points Event in Miami and headlining at London’s hottest show of last year. They’re stepping out from their home base in Ibiza (after a 10-year residency at world-famous Circoloco) and frequent collaborations with Latinx artists like Fuego and Rauw Alejandro to become even more international.

They’re not ending their love affair with the island that launched them into stardom though, continuing to play at Hï Ibiza a.k.a the voted # 1 Club in the World. The brothers have just stepped into the studio with fresher and younger artists like Eliza Rose, Mochakk, and (of course) Tommy Genesis. They even played at Dua Lipa’s Met Gala afterparty and LOEWE’s Paula’s Ibiza pop-u in LA last year. The latter is not their only connection to fashion either– they also designed the music for Riccardo Tisci’s iconic Givenchy years. For them then, PFW also proves to be an appropriate song name choice.

Lunadira – ‘Go Slow’

With her orange bob and purple tulle gown Malaysia-based artist Lunadira looked like a pretty jellyfish as she swayed on the turquoise Colors stage singing her groovy single ‘Go Slow’. The video of the performance was released on the 27th January and the R&B singer, whose real name is Kuala Lumpur, made history as the first Malaysian artist to feature on the show. Sleek, sedate, and sensual, in ‘Go Slow’ Lunadira ignores the advice given to her and coolly replies “Since when do I do what I’m told?” giving us goosebumps with her defiant energy. 

Flower.far – ‘Walk Away’

Thai R&B pop singer Flower.far gave a dreamy performance on the Colors Show beginning with soft delicate vocals that gave way to a powerful and flourishing style. The video for the performance of ‘Walk Away’, Far’s latest single, debuted on the 23rd January. Far looked at home on the orange Colors stage in a beige deconstructed two-piece that displayed femininity in all its ruffly asymmetrical-ness. Considering her debut single was only released in May last year it’s amazing how honed the singer sound is already. 

GloRilla – ‘Out Loud Thinking’

If you’ve yet to hear of the rising Memphis star with a big attitude GloRilla, where have you been hiding? The next leading trap rap artist has had a few stellar months: currently, she’s halfway through a US tour, she’s rapped alongside Cardi B, and charted with her EP Anyways, Life Is Great. Her track ‘F.N.F. (Let’s Go)’ also achieved viral success on TikTok and a nomination for best rap performance at the Grammy’s where she looked glam in a black and white sparkly gown and met her idol Beyoncé. She garnered a lot of support from the music world with her Colors performance, which has now received over half a million views since its release in early December. On the show, she delivered a sharp performance of the last track on her latest EP ‘Out Loud Thinking’ in her distinctive low-pitched style. Glo looks steezy and laidback as always with her sleek blonde ‘do and black and pink accented athletic gear against the red background. 

Jamilah Barry – ‘If The Love Goes’

London-based artist Jamilah Barry blew us away when she collabed with Nigerian-British producer P2J to perform ‘If the Love Goes’ on the Colors show back in December. Starting without any accompaniment the singer demonstrated her amazing tone then when P2J comes in with a rhythmic beat with jazzy saxophone Jamilah jams to the instrumentals delivering sweet effortless vocals as she tells her partner she’s leaving them. The performance is the second that the neo-soul singer has made on the Colors show having performed her track ‘Cut Me Open’ back in 2021. Jamilah looked regal in a royal blue one-sleeved bodycon dress that popped against the orange stage. As Jamilah released her debut EP Romance Me over 2 years ago, we’re hoping she’ll release some new material on streaming soon.

Mỹ Anh – Mỗi Khi Anh Nhìn Em’

The latest video on the Colors channel is from Vietnamese singer-songwriter and producer Mỹ Anh whose performance of her latest single ‘Mỗi Khi Anh Nhìn Em’ (‘Every time I Look at You’) was posted on the 6thFebruary. Looking like an adorable buttercup in a bright yellow quilt textured dress that matched with the stage, Mỹ Anh gave a flawlessly smooth performance of the sugary R&B song. We’re obsessed with Mỹ Anh’s vocals as well as the brass section on this track that make it feel so grand. Also, her bow earrings and hairstyle that match the ginormous bow on her dress are just too cute.

]]> Ice Spice is here to change the rap game – and she’s not waiting for her peers to catch up. On the 20th January, the rapper dropped her much-awaited debut EP, which was announced only hours before its release, and it’s far from disappointing. Sharp, sexy, fun, and fresh – Like… is bringing a feminine revamp to drill that the genre needed.

Those who have yet to hear of Isis Gaston, the 23-year-old rapper from NYC, will soon see her name popping up everywhere. She was featured on Vevo’s Artists to Watch in 2023 list and has already built a huge fanbase with 3M followers on Instagram and 2.7M on TikTok. She’s been likened to our fav rappers Saweetie and GloRilla by critics and has gained fans in the Weeknd who shared the track ‘Gangsta Boo’ on his story this week and Drake who played her single ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ in his Sirius XM radio station. She first gained attention when a video of her doing the “Buss It” challenge went viral on Twitter back in 2021 and she’s been climbing the rap ranks ever since bringing her unique flare with her.

Like… encapsulates the gen Z sound to its core. The songs are short and snappy with looped high-pitched instrumentals, popping drill bass, and an unwavering nonchalance in Ice’s vocals – it’s no surprise that she has gained fans in the chronically online youth as her tracks sound deeply TikTok-inspired. The songs even begin with a short skit (“Grrah/Stop playin’ with ’em, RIOT/Grrah”) that mimics the rapid buzz of noise like that of scrolling through TikTok. At 13 minutes long Like… may be brief but those beats are memorable.

Despite her modern sound Ice Spice’s influences include time-honoured artists Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Foxy Brown, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill demonstrating she is well-versed in the world of R&B and rap.

The singles on the EP are the snappy playful ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’, the Spongebob-esque ‘Bikini Bottom’, and the hip-mover ‘In Ha Mood’, all released in the last half of 2022. ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ was unsurprisingly a winner with the internet going viral on Twitter and TikTok as well as charting on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Bubbling Under Hot 100 charts.

A standout on the EP is fellow Bronx rapper Lil Tay’s collaboration with Ice on ‘Gangsta Boo’. His high-pitched fast-paced flow contrasts Ice Spice’s relaxed flow and deep vocals well. Ice Spice’s long-time collaborator RiotUSA, who produced the EP, sampled P. Diddy’s ‘I Need a Girl Part 2’ for the track creating an absolute earworm of a melody.

Ice Spice makes it clear she doesn’t care whether you like her or not with her ultra-cool relaxed attitude, which ironically is the reason we love her. Her lyrics express an aloofness as to what the haters think with her witty responses indicating she doesn’t take herself too seriously. In ‘Ha Mood’ she claps back at the haters who are jealous of her success, “Oh, she mad ’cause I’m takin’ her spot/If I was bitches, I’d hate me a lot”. She also hits back at internet trolls in ‘Bikini Bottom’ telling them, “I got two milli’ for usin’ a mic, bitch/Think about that when you type”. Ice compares herself with the much-loved Princess of Wales in ‘Princess Diana’ after a fan dubbed her “the modern-day Princess Diana” in a now-viral tweet suggesting she realises her own charm. In ‘Gangsta Boo’ Ice gets spicy singing “You got a gangsta vibe/ And I want a gangsta boo” in a chorus that won’t leave your head for days. Ice has her own lexis pool that we just want to dive into. She introduces us to the newest (and cutest) term for being a hoe in ‘Actin A Smoochie’ and that you just can’t help smiling at. Likewise, ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ brings the ladies the NYC-originating diss “munch” aimed at men that get a bit too cocky.

So far, two of the tracks from the Like… have music videos both of which display Ice Spice’s unique tongue-in-cheek spirit. ‘Bikini Bottom’ features Ice Spice partying with hotties and rapping with a wry smile in the corner of her mouth in front of a garish green screen as money flows down on her. It’s a bombardment on the eyes as the video jaggedly cuts from shot to shot – and we can’t look away. The video for ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ has a similar vibe with cartoon butterflies and graphics of the lyrics flying across the screen whilst Ice Spice chills with her friends on a basketball court making us wish we were bad enough to dance with the newly crowned princess of drill.

With her signature orange afro, glossy lips, and on-point style that mixes y2k-inspired belts and chains with skin-tight bright dresses and co-ords Ice Spice’s look is seamless. Her Instagram is full of a variety of looks that whilst different all convey Ice’s cohesive style. We’ve pieced together some pieces that will help you replicate Ice Spice’s baddie look.

Retro fire red Jordan 4s, light blue skinny jeans, and a cropped silver puffer make up the staples of this throwback fit reminiscent of some of Missy Elliott’s looks in the noughties. Add a chunky chain, half a dozen rings, and starred white XL square nails to complete the look.

This colourful curve-hugging two-piece made from braided fabrics is super flattering on Ice Spice. She accessories the outfit perfectly with ripped white tights, a silver Balenciaga shoulder bag, white fluffy Demonia boots, her classic chunky silver chain, a bejewelled heart ring, and long black nails.

Ice glows in her chat with Genius about ‘Bikini Bottom’. She wears a black fluffy cardigan with a black bra peaking out, cute white moon leggings from Marine Serre, with a heart chain. Her tie dye patterned yellow, green, and orange nails are super cute too.

The green stilettos and yellow nails match perfectly with this orange, green, blue, and yellow striped skin-hugging maxi dress. And of course Ice’s orange mane is the perfect icing on top of the cake.

Ice gives Instagram the finger in a distressed red catsuit looking exceptionally snatched. She styles with a black Prada shoulder bag and black tabis. We love how she mixes chic accessories with a more racy look to bring together the fit.

The Latin promise has been marking the international music scene with her talent and fearless approach since 2017, following the release of her hit single ‘Corashe’, and continues to do so with projects like “Calambre” – that represent the combination of contemporary urban sounds, traditional Argentinian music, and unapologetic lyrics.

Nathy Peluso’s music has been all over the music landscape recently, resulting in her nominations for the 21st Latin Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Song categories, which were accompanied by her live performance alongside Argentine rockstar Fito Paez. But her artistic trajectory is not as recent as you’d think, the singer-songwriter has always been interested in the artistic world, which she first entered while studying Pedagogy in visual arts and dance, back when she considered singing to be a “hobby”.

But as she explains in an interview with Billboard back in 2020, it didn’t take long for her to transform her passion into more than just a hobby. The 26 years old artist combined her interests in arts, music, dance, and theatre to build the career she has nowadays – which started with a few Youtube releases of her street poetry and rap. She became known for her experimentation with the Spanish underground music scene, bringing her flow and sometimes explicit lyrics at balance with the Spanish Hip Hop scene, and with an evident touch of Argentinian culture through the inclusion of Latin sounds and the merge of iconic influences.

Although traditional is not the first word that would come to your mind when listening to Nathy Peluso and songs like “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 36”, the singer has been described as a pioneer of Latin music due to this innovative fusion with traditional Argentinian music. Our favourite example? “Calambre” of course, Peluso’s forthcoming debut album, that pays homage to the Argentinian music scene with contemporary trap tracks that reference Argentine rock icons and more.

The appeal of her music centres on the ease, or apparent ease, with which she alternates in between and fuses different genres. From the soul present in “Llámame” and “Buenos Aires”, to the ballad of “Trío”, and the salsa in “Puro Veneno” to the wild trap of “Sana Sana” or the reggaeton hit “Wild love”, Nathy Peluso’s musical diversity doesn’t cease to surprise us.

Her visuals and on-stage performance are further proof of this, and although we haven’t been able to attend one of her concerts in the past year, we might have the opportunity to do so from this upcoming weekend. The avant-garde singer will be performing at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland, which begins this Friday (following the established anticovid measures), alongside other prominent international artists.

There’s no doubt that Nathy Peluso has marked the music industry, and our music taste, over the last three years (at least) and that she will most likely continue to do so with her peculiar approach to urban sounds and Latin folklore, and her empowering lyrics… so we cannot wait to hear and see what she has in store for us.
