For Genesis, this is also her first song after being featured in Lana Del Rey’s album earlier this year and releasing her own critically acclaimed album ‘goldilocks x’. Born in Vancouver but based in LA, Tommy’s blur of genres and embrace of her sexuality is what led her to develop a cult following with her self-titled debut. The song name ‘PFW’ makes sense for the self proclaimed fetish rapper, who’s considered a style innovator and has had a very busy New York Fashion Week (she was at the Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, and Priscavera shows). Genesis was also one of Versace’s muses for their AW17 campaign and has been a Fenty ambassador since 2019. Rihanna even hand-picked and interviewed her for the Rihannazine, a special issue of i-D curated by her.

The global popstar is not the only major artist that noticed Tommy’s avant-garde rap and orgasmic adlibs; she’s since collaborated with Deb Never in ‘Same’, been featured in Charli XCX tandem track Bricks, and joined efforts with Jozzy for ‘Gone’, a track heard on the widely popular HBO’s Euphoria. Her alluring wordplay and subversive quirkiness also put her onto mainstream media, with her art featured on shows like Issa Rae’s Insecure, the film Assassination Nation, and Netflix’s Grand Army.

For NY-born and raised brothers Stevie and Chris, PFW introduces a new, exciting era in their eminent careers. Two staple names in the house genre, their four-to-the-floor rhythm has led them to play all over the world: from the Kappa Futur Festival in Italy and Fabrik Madrid to the III Points Event in Miami and headlining at London’s hottest show of last year. They’re stepping out from their home base in Ibiza (after a 10-year residency at world-famous Circoloco) and frequent collaborations with Latinx artists like Fuego and Rauw Alejandro to become even more international.

They’re not ending their love affair with the island that launched them into stardom though, continuing to play at Hï Ibiza a.k.a the voted # 1 Club in the World. The brothers have just stepped into the studio with fresher and younger artists like Eliza Rose, Mochakk, and (of course) Tommy Genesis. They even played at Dua Lipa’s Met Gala afterparty and LOEWE’s Paula’s Ibiza pop-u in LA last year. The latter is not their only connection to fashion either– they also designed the music for Riccardo Tisci’s iconic Givenchy years. For them then, PFW also proves to be an appropriate song name choice.

Lunadira – ‘Go Slow’

With her orange bob and purple tulle gown Malaysia-based artist Lunadira looked like a pretty jellyfish as she swayed on the turquoise Colors stage singing her groovy single ‘Go Slow’. The video of the performance was released on the 27^th January and the R&B singer, whose real name is Kuala Lumpur, made history as the first Malaysian artist to feature on the show. Sleek, sedate, and sensual, in ‘Go Slow’ Lunadira ignores the advice given to her and coolly replies “Since when do I do what I’m told?” giving us goosebumps with her defiant energy. 

Flower.far – ‘Walk Away’

Thai R&B pop singer Flower.far gave a dreamy performance on the Colors Show beginning with soft delicate vocals that gave way to a powerful and flourishing style. The video for the performance of ‘Walk Away’, Far’s latest single, debuted on the 23^rd January. Far looked at home on the orange Colors stage in a beige deconstructed two-piece that displayed femininity in all its ruffly asymmetrical-ness. Considering her debut single was only released in May last year it’s amazing how honed the singer sound is already. 

GloRilla – ‘Out Loud Thinking’

If you’ve yet to hear of the rising Memphis star with a big attitude GloRilla, where have you been hiding? The next leading trap rap artist has had a few stellar months: currently, she’s halfway through a US tour, she’s rapped alongside Cardi B, and charted with her EP Anyways, Life Is Great. Her track ‘F.N.F. (Let’s Go)’ also achieved viral success on TikTok and a nomination for best rap performance at the Grammy’s where she looked glam in a black and white sparkly gown and met her idol Beyoncé. She garnered a lot of support from the music world with her Colors performance, which has now received over half a million views since its release in early December. On the show, she delivered a sharp performance of the last track on her latest EP ‘Out Loud Thinking’ in her distinctive low-pitched style. Glo looks steezy and laidback as always with her sleek blonde ‘do and black and pink accented athletic gear against the red background. 

Jamilah Barry – ‘If The Love Goes’

London-based artist Jamilah Barry blew us away when she collabed with Nigerian-British producer P2J to perform ‘If the Love Goes’ on the Colors show back in December. Starting without any accompaniment the singer demonstrated her amazing tone then when P2J comes in with a rhythmic beat with jazzy saxophone Jamilah jams to the instrumentals delivering sweet effortless vocals as she tells her partner she’s leaving them. The performance is the second that the neo-soul singer has made on the Colors show having performed her track ‘Cut Me Open’ back in 2021. Jamilah looked regal in a royal blue one-sleeved bodycon dress that popped against the orange stage. As Jamilah released her debut EP Romance Me over 2 years ago, we’re hoping she’ll release some new material on streaming soon.

Mỹ Anh – Mỗi Khi Anh Nhìn Em’

The latest video on the Colors channel is from Vietnamese singer-songwriter and producer Mỹ Anh whose performance of her latest single ‘Mỗi Khi Anh Nhìn Em’ (‘Every time I Look at You’) was posted on the 6^thFebruary. Looking like an adorable buttercup in a bright yellow quilt textured dress that matched with the stage, Mỹ Anh gave a flawlessly smooth performance of the sugary R&B song. We’re obsessed with Mỹ Anh’s vocals as well as the brass section on this track that make it feel so grand. Also, her bow earrings and hairstyle that match the ginormous bow on her dress are just too cute.

Rupaul – Black Butta – Release Date: January 6th

This Friday RuPaul is set to release his 15^th studio album Black Butta including 9 original tracks that are sure to make us wanna strut our stuff. The two lead singles of the album were released in early November: ‘Star Baby’ and Christmas tune ‘Show Me That You Festive’. The album follows Mamaru that came out in January last year and featured the ridiculously catchy ‘Catwalk’. There’s no doubt this will slay.

Sam Smith – Gloria – Release Date: January 27th

English singer-songwriter Sam Smith is dropping their much awaited fourth studio album Gloria at the end of this month fans will be delighted to hear. The singles ‘Love Me More’ and ‘Unholy’ featuring German singer Kim Petras released last year have already been super popular with ‘Unholy’ reaching number one in several countries and being used all over TikTok. The album consists of 13 songs as well as several features such as Koffee, Jessie Reyez, and none other than Ed Sheeran!

SG Lewis – AudioLust & HigherLove – Release Date: January 27th

On the same day as Sam Smith’s album we are blessed to be receiving dance pop king SG Lewis’ second studio album AudioLust & HigherLove. Having worked with pop royalty such as Dua Lipa, Clario and Jessie Ware we are so gassed to see what he has instore for us next. Featuring 15 funky tracks and fresh artists such as Tove Lo, Charlotte Day Wilson, Channel Tres, Ty Dolla $ign, and Lucky Daye we know that we won’t be able to stop boogieing to this LP.

Ellie Goulding – Higher Than Heaven – Release Date: February 3rd

Starting off February with style, British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding is releasing her fifth studio album Higher than Heaven. The album follows Goulding’s 2020 release Brightest Blue that reached number 1 in the UK. The 11-track album features the three singles ‘All By Myself’, ‘Let it Die’, and ‘Easy Lover’ featuring American rapper Big Sean. If the infectious pop tune ‘Easy Lover’ is anything to go by Higher Than Heavenshould be a treat.

Paramore – This Is Why – Release Date: February 10th

Everyone’s favourite pop punk band Paramore will be filling our 2023 with riotous tunes when they release their sixth studio album This Is Why in February. It’s their first album since their critically acclaimed and wildly popular After Laughter was released 6 years earlier. The album consists of 10 tracks boasting two fabulous singles: the title single ‘This Is Why’ and the punchy banger ‘The News’. Get out your hairbrush because you’re gonna wanna sing along to this album!

Caroline Polachek – Desire, I Want To Turn Into You – Release Date: February 14th

American pop diva Caroline Polachek is sure to bring us anthems in 2023 with the release of her fourth solo studio album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You releasing next month. The album will feature 12 tracks although only the titles of the singles – ‘Billions’, ‘Bunny is a Rider’, ‘Sunset’, and ‘Welcome to My Island’ – are known at the moment. Having just worked with Charli XCX, Christine and the Queens, and supported Dua Lipa on tour there’s no doubt this album will bring the campy drama.

Gorillaz – Cracker Island – Release Date: February 24th

Those cheeky mayhem-loving cartoon musicians are gearing up to share their eighth studio album Cracker Island at the end of February and we can’t wait to see what they have up their virtual sleeves. Damon Albarn of 90s Britpop band Blur is the voice and music behind the band with comic book artist Jamie Hewett providing the band’s loveable faces. The album consists of 11 tracks and features huge names such as Thundercat, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, Tame Impala, Bootie Brown, Bad Bunny, and Beck. The single ‘New Gold’ featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown is a funky delight bound to get you moving. Cracker Island promises to hold more funky gems.

Lana Del Rey – Did You Know There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd – Release Date: March 10th

Ladies get ready. The ultimate glamourous romantic Lana Del Rey will be supplying us new music to soundtrack our heartbreak in March. The kitschily named Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd will be Lana’s ninth studio album following Blue Banisters released late 2021. So far only the luscious orchestral title track has been released out of the 16 songs on the album – it already sounds like one of Lana’s most recent bests!

Miley Cyrus – Endless Summer Vacation – Release Date: March 10th

Pop superstar Miley Cyrus has been keeping us on our toes since her Hannah Montana days. Now the multi-platinum selling artist is grabbing our attention with the announcement of her eight-studio album Endless Summer. Miley describes the album as a love letter to LA, the place that she calls home. The first single from the album, ‘Flowers’, will be available to stream on 13^th January. With her previous album Plastic Hearts being one our all-time favs from 2020 we are over the moon to hear there’s more Miley coming our way!

Flo

Fresh new R&B girl band Flo already have a growing fanbase after releasing their popular single ‘Cardboard Box’ featured on the EP ‘The Lead’ last year. Now they have a new single out ‘Losing You’ released last month and have confirmed with Huffington Post that there will be a new album on the way in 2023. Watch this space!

Kylie Minogue

Ever since Kylie jumped on the trend and slayed the resurgence of disco with her simply titled ‘DISCO” bringing us all the vibes back in 2020 we have been gagging for more of her music. Looks like fans won’t have to wait for much longer. Kylie told the Sun last October that she was back in the studio and her next album’s sound is “super exciting”. Whatever it is we can’t wait.

Travis Scott – Utopia

Travis Scott’s follow up to his 2018 Astroworld may be just around the corner as he confirmed back in June via Instagram that he was in the studio. Titled Utopia this will be his fourth studio album. Speaking to i-D Scott revealed that he was working with new people in attempt to expand his sound. Sounds like exciting stuff to us.

The Weeknd… Rumoured

After the absolute gem of Dawn FM that The Weeknd gave us in 2022 we are greedily pleading for more, more, more. There’s a fan theory that Dawn FM is hinting to Abel’s next album perhaps being called After Lifeand the rumoured album completing a trilogy that begins with After Hours. We’re unsure of course but that would be incredible. With his world tour starting in June and ending in October it’s unlikely that we will receive a new album but a few singles or collabs wouldn’t go amiss! 

Jennifer Lopez – This Is Me…Now

Following the 20^th anniversary of This Is Me… Then last year J.Lo announced that she will be dropping a new album This Is Me Now. It will be the icon’s ninth studio album and also her first album since A.K.A. was released all the way back in 2014. She describes the album as an “emotional, spiritual, and psychological journey she has taken over the past two decades.” With 13 tracks we can’t wait to sink our teeth in. J.Lo we’ve missed you!

Shygirl

We’re hoping that our favourite house artist, hyperpop rapper, and ethereal princess Shygirl will present us with some more of her transcendent music this year. The artist has been pretty prolific releasing an EP in 2020, a handful of singles in 2021, and then her debut album Nymph in 2022. It’s just a hunch but please let it be true!

Carly Rae Jepsen – ‘Western Wind’

 2022 saw the return of the queen of synthpop. Carly released her 6th studio album, The Loneliest Time, in October much to the delight of her adoring fans. The lead single ‘Western Wind’, co-written by the ex-Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij, is a laidback banger that we can’t get out of our heads. The light congas, piano chords, and repetitive chant-like chorus are so soothing. 

The Weekend – ‘Sacrifice’

 What a year The Weeknd has had. In January the Canadian singer-songwriter released his 5th studio album, Dawn FM, which quickly rose to number 1 in over 10 countries. He’s also featured on some of our favourite tracks of the year and his tour next year is set to sell-out. Whilst the album gave us 4 superb singles the ‘80s-inspired ‘Sacrifice’ is the ultimate dance track this year. 

Beyonce – ‘Break My Soul’

 Queen Bey gifted us Renaissance in July and we haven’t stopped playing it since. The album seamlessly blends disco and house to give us the club tunes we need and the single ‘Break My Soul’ is the perfect track to dance away the blues to. Honorary mention to CUFF IT – choosing one song was so tough! 

FKA Twigs ft. The Weekend – ‘Tears In The Club’

 Our favourite pop princess FKA Twigs dropped her horoscope-inspired mixtape Caprisongs in January and along with it came ‘Tears in the Club’. Catchy, fun, and oh so dancey – what is there not to love? The Weeknd’s verse is also oh-so smooth. 

Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa & Young Thug – ‘Potion’

With this supergroup, it’s no surprise that this single was one of our anthems of the summer. ‘Potion’ is the second song Calvin and Dua have teamed up on after their hit ‘One Kiss’ back in 2018. The single is a masterclass in how to produce a bop. After all, who could resist that groovy bass? 

Danger Mouse and Black Thought (ft. MF Doom) – ‘Belize’

 Danger Mouse and Black Thought’s collaboration album, Cheat Codes, brought us the moody old-school hip-hop tracks we never knew we were craving. The album includes several fab guess spots from familiar names such as A$AP Rocky, Run the Jewels, and Joey Badass, but the late great MF Doom on ‘Belize’ is the standout.

Charli XCX ft. Rina Sawayama – ‘Beg For You’

When it comes to songs you want to belt out in the club no one does it like Charli XCX. Charli dropped the short but sweet Crash in March bringing a whole new set of songs to our party playlists. ‘Beg For You’ is exactly the energetic infectious tune we love.

However, Gucci is not the only one recreating masterpieces in monochromatic colours. New contemporary artists Elspeth Vince, Navinder Nangla, and Shaquille-Aaron Keith have chosen one of their past artworks to recreate in a colourless form. Just like the trainers, the artists’ work are transformed into black-and-white paintings. Focus is put on forms and shapes as these paintings are shown in a different perspective- similar to the Baskets, Screeners, and Rhytons. Blurring the lines between art and fashion and merging the two worlds together head-on, is exciting and inspiring. 

Inspired by lots, Vince took influence from conversations among friends as well as her own body to tell the story of this piece. She puts focus on memory through her playful use of light and shadows.

Nangla sees his work in a therapeutic manner as he takes joy in creating his artwork.  Inspired by his mantra ‘destruction is a form of creation’ his black and white painting is everything we love about contemporary and modern art. 

Shaquille-Aaron Keith believes he is a storyteller before he is an artist. Art allows him to tell stories which otherwise may not be told. His painting tells the story of his youth and allows him to reflect on his adolescent years. Although his painting was already a monochromatic masterpiece, he took the inspired decision to invert everything in his composition. 

The Campaign

The campaign caught our attention very easily as Hyperbeast create an auction scene allowing Gucci wearers to bid on the three paintings which were re-imagined by the artists. A comedic, while remaining high fashion tone is used in the campaign which speaks the nature of the brand. Bidders are cleverly wearing the monochrome collection which is easily spotted in the unconventional auction room while they try to outbid each other on the paintings. The campaign ends with the auctioneer- Columnist Raven Smith- awarding the highest bidder the win. Now that is an auction we would like to attend.

The night was marked by exceptional performances from artists like Lil Wayne, Jack Harlow, and Lizzo but also Chance the Rapper and Joey Badass, Chlöe, Ella Mai, Latto, Muni Long, Givēon, and Doechii. Kanye West even made a surprise appearance to pay tribute to Diddy, who received a lifetime achievement award. Mary J. Blige, Jodeci, Nas, Lil’ Kim, Busta Rhymes, The LOX, Bryson Tiller, and Faith Evans were also all on hand to pay tribute to their friend.

There were moments of joy, however. Brandy did a surprise performance with Jack Harlow, and Mariah Carey hit some impressive high notes in a surprise performance with Latto.

After Covid related delays and cancellations over the past two years, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is back at its California home for ready for 2022. Announcing this year’s lineup on Instagram, Coachella confirmed the festival would be going ahead, running across two weekends in April, the 15-17 and the 22-24.

Featuring an array of star-studded performers, Harry Styles will be headlining alongside Billie Eilish and Ye (Kanye West). Other acts set to be performing include, Disclosure, Doja Cat, Arlo Parks, and Peggy Gou.

The annual festival will take place at its usual setting in the Indio Desert, east of Palm Springs, California. And it is expected that a bunch of trendy guests will be in attendance at this year’s event. Previous years have seen the likes of Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and Hailey Bieber make their way to the desert to enjoy a stylish weekend of music and arts.

Perhaps one of the only saving graces to come from this year is that we got some incredible music, we got albums from some of our favourite superstars like The Weeknd and Ariana Grande, but perhaps more exciting than that is all the new faces we became acquainted with. As the year draws to a close and we (thankfully) move into 2021 we thought we’d provide you with a guide to some of the artists who are set to put their stamp on the industry for the coming years.

Greentea Peng

The self-described ‘psychedelic R&B’ singer-songwriter has had a steady year improving on the momentum she created for herself in 2019 with her breakout single ‘Downers’. Greentea is bringing something new to the UK music scene, her silky and enticing vocals are matched with thoughtful and conscious lyrics tackling topics such as gentrification and spirituality in the modern era.

The Kid LAROI

If we told you a few years ago that in the year 2020, one of hip hops most popular rappers would be a 17-year-old kid from Australia, you’d probably laugh in our face. But here we are and The Kid LAROI has taken the year by storm. With a whiny and angsty vocal style, Laroi has the ability to dominate tracks. His lyrics are catchy, and his style is perfect for the current climate of mainstream rap as he often blends classic emo with modern trap, very similarly to his former friend and label mate, Juice WRLD. With viral tracks on Tik Tok and the deluxe version of his debut album recently being released with instant commercial success, it will be no surprise to see Laroi at the top of the charts in the coming years.

Baby Keem

Being Kendrick Lamar’s cousin is a pretty good starting point to be at when embarking on a musical career, but it also comes with a lot of pressure. Luckily Baby Keem doesn’t seem to feel pressure and he’s going in the complete opposite direction to his better-known cousin. While you might expect Keem to focus on lyricism and social commentary like Kendrick, he confidently carves his own lane providing an energetic and captivating new voice in the rap game. His vocal inflections and flows are sometimes strange, however, they are always head-turning and you’ll struggle to find someone who fits into the same creative pocket as him. His biggest hit ‘ORANGE SODA’ has over 150 million plays on Spotify and we expect to see even higher numbers than that in 2021.

Mulatto

Although Mulatto may have been making in rows in the industry over the past few years, 2020 has truly been her breakout year. She showed her versatility as an artist on her debut album earlier this year, dipping her toes into various styles and pulling it off without sacrificing the quality of the music. The Atlanta native has held her own and often outshined fellow rap heavyweights like Gucci Mane and 21 Savage on her own tracks, she’s not one to underestimate.

Rosalia

Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalia has had quite the year, from working with Travis Scott on multiple tracks whilst also more recently being placed on the official remix for the biggest song of the year ‘Blinding Lights’, there are no doubts she’s placed herself within the upper echelon of the music industry. Born in Barcelona Rosalia’s international appeal is unmatched, this year she even became the first artist to be nominated for a VMA who primarily records in Spanish. Artists like J Balvin (who she’s also collabed with) have managed to become global superstars with music that transcends language and it seems Rosalia is the next artist to become that internationally recognised.

Jack Harlow

Jack Harlow’s catchy and colourful flows have already managed to find a place for themselves on the charts as his massive viral hit ‘What’s Poppin’ seemed to be on everyone’s playlist this year. Jack’s confident and infectious personality seeps onto the bright and playful trap beats he laces his well-executed melodies and witty wordplay all over. Jack makes music that is the epitome of fun. However, he did manage to show a different side to his music during his XXL freshman freestyle where he tackled the subject of racial unjust with a level of maturity and thoughtfulness you wouldn’t usually expect from a rapper in his lane. While we’re sure he’ll carry on providing soundtracks to your parties, it’s great to know he also has a more conscious approach to music in his locker.

Mariah The Scientist

A fresh new voice from the endless talent pool of Atlanta who goes by the name Mariah The Scientist, is bringing brutally honest lyrics and a truly exceptional vocal range that is engineered to repeatedly pull at your heartstrings. Mariah provides a perspective that seems as if it’s been written from the women’s POV to the type of debauchery bragged about in The Weeknd’s songs. The view of a girlfriend who had to live with his ego and endless selfish decisions.

SAINt JHN

The story of SAINt JHN is quite incredible, his track ‘Roses’ which was released in 2018 and gained only minor commercial success was then remixed In late 2019 by Kazakh producer Imanbek and the song now astonishingly has over one billion views on Spotify, giving SAINt JHN one of the most listened to songs of the year. More recently he released his debut album stacked full of features from some of music’s biggest names such as Kanye West, Future and Lil Uzi Vert. While SAINt JHN may not be a household name at this current moment but he’s doing everything, he can to make sure he will be.

100 Gecs

If there’s one thing you can say about 100 Gecs, it’s that they refuse to allow themselves to be trapped in a creative box. Their influences range from punk and hip hop to alt-pop and ska. Their music is a complete mess and we mean that in the best way possible. Their range of alternative bangers are impressively hectic and incredibly creative and unique. When you first hear a Gecs song you may find yourself struggling to comprehend what you’re hearing but we promise it will grow on you, and once you start digging through their discography you won’t be able to stop. Even big industry names are starting to take notice and the duo have worked with pop star Charli XCX on the remix to their song ‘Ringtone’.

Even though there was no one around to witness this year’s Billboard Music Awards, there were still many show-stopping moments throughout the show, from Post Malone sweeping the floor with the most awards of the night to some incredible performances, we’re here to let you know all the talking points.

It was no surprise that Post Malone had won the most awards at this years ceremony considering the year he has had, he picked up nine awards overall while taking home the top artist prize to end the night and winning nine awards overall. Following Post Malone was Khalid who picked up five awards.

The ceremony opened with host Kelly Clarkson providing us with a tear-jerking monologue. “Tonight is about the way music touches us all because music connects with us in so many ways. No matter who you are, it moves us, sometimes Literally,” said Clarkson, adding “We dance. We sing. We cry, like I do often. It brings back those good memories and it also helps us make new ones”.

As always with award shows, often the looks take the spotlight and this year’s awards are no exception. Perhaps the most jaw-dropping was Lil Nas X’s, sporting a light green Gucci suit in a snakeskin print, while giving us major Prince vibes with his new curly bangs.

Post Malone continued to be the star of the show with one of the best performances of the night at a “top secret” location. Parading around an industrial yard stage, Post performed his smash hit ‘Circles’ and then his Tyla Yaweh collab “Tommy Lee”, with Yaweh himself, which made for one of the most electrifying performances of the night.

Some of the other captivating moments of the night included Doja Cat embracing musical theatre with a burlesque-inspired performance. Doja sported a throwback dress and wig with an old-Hollywood sense of showmanship. Lizzo provided a big statement during her acceptance speech for top song sales artist while wearing a dress covered with the repeated word, “VOTE”. She then went on to say “I’ve been thinking a lot about suppression, and the voices that refuse to be suppressed,” later adding “and I wonder, would I be standing here right now, if it wasn’t for the big black women who refused to be suppressed?”.

The unofficial award for most emotional performance will most certainly be going to John Legend. He performed a solo ‘Never Break’ on piano, the singer dedicated the performance to his wife Chrissy Teigen after their recent personal tragedy.

En Vogue closed out the awards with a rendition of anti-prejudice anthem ‘Free Your Mind’ as the group celebrated their 30th anniversary. Original members Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron were joined by Rhona Bennett as they performed one of their greatest hits and at one-point, Childish Gambino’s This Is America was sampled as black-and-white footage of civil rights marches played on screens behind the band members which provided a poignant and hard-hitting closing to the ceremony.

As we all know the ongoing pandemic has drastically changed our everyday lives. And although it seems we are taking slow steps down the path to normality one of the biggest industries to be affected by this is the music industry.

We don’t think anyone could envisage a situation where there would be a ban on all live shows. Gigs and festivals offer such a unique and memorable experience and often are what we’re all looking forward to throughout the year. On the other hand, for artists, this is arguably the worst possible scenario and one that none of them were ready for. Live Nation, who were one of the first organisations to postpone all of their gigs, have stated they hope to resume concerts at “full scale” in the third and fourth quarter of 2021. Which will be a torturous wait for any musician.

With all concerts and festivals being canceled for the foreseeable future it’s beginning to take a toll on the up-coming artists over the world who rely on touring meticulously to make most of their money. Independent artists who don’t have the machine of a major label behind them are starting to struggle, this pandemic could throw away huge amounts of potential due to the fact that without touring it’s difficult for artists to stay financially afloat. Given that The Music Industry Investigative report revealed that just 17% of musicians said that they were not always able to pay their bills every month even before COVID-19, it’s quite startling to think about what those numbers maybe today.

The one thing artists have been able to do more of is make music. With this excess of time on their hands, there has been a surge of users on music distribution services such as TuneCore and United Masters uploading music at a never before seen rate. It may seem obvious but the best thing an up-coming artist can do right now is to keep on releasing music, and try to reach as big of an audience as possible while they have the time to do so.

Looking on the bright side, many independent artists tried to make the most of the circumstances and began doing live performances via streaming. Although it’s not the colossal moneymaker that is live touring, it’s given artists a great way to interact with their fan bases without having to be directly in front of them. It’s clear that the smaller artists using this tool are really trying to keep a strong connection with their fanbase and cultivate it even further which in turn will hopefully support them during these unprecedented times.

Luckily, there are still ways to support your favourite artists in these dire times, one of the best ways to help out is buying their merch. Many artists who had tours planned will have made huge orders on tour merch which they would have expected to sell at their upcoming shows. However, due to their cancellation, they are now stuck with endless amounts of merch and a huge financial loss. Buying a t-shirt from an artist you love could go a long way in ensuring they continue to make music and remain in a financially stable situation to do so.

Although it would be understandable for any musician to take a break right now in favour of financial stability, equally we have every hope that emerging artists will bounce back and be able to show their talents in the flesh, as we slowly return to normality.
