But what about the basics? While a Brat uniform would not be keeping in-tone with the movement, we could all benefit from broadening our wardrobe to encompass some quintessential Brat style, namely: edgy, square-rimmed sunglasses, a sticky Y2K lip gloss, knee-high boots (ideally worn with ripped fishnets), and most importantly: wearing your attitude high and your inhibitions low.

It’s been 5 years since we met up with the R&B singer RAYE for a chat and she modelled for the cover of our 20^th issue. The then 19-year-old from London had caught our eye with her features on the phenomenal singles Jonas Blues’ ‘By Your Side’ and Jax Jones’ ‘You Don’t know Me’ as well as her collaborations with Stormzy, Nas, and Charli XCX. She told us that her goal was to be number 1 in every single country and whilst she hasn’t quite managed that ambitious goal, yet she’s certainly skyrocketed since then.

She has now added some of the biggest stars to her list of collaborations such as Mabel, Zara Larsson, Sofia Carson, Tinashe, Madison Beer, Cheat Codes, Little Mix, David Guetta, Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding, David Guetta, and even Queen Bee herself.

At the end of last year, RAYE achieved her first number one single with ‘Escapism’ featuring American Rapper 070 Shake. The single topped the UK, Danish, and Irish charts and charted in the top ten in several other countries following its booming success on TikTok where a sped-up version of the track is still trending. Having sat on the charts for 17 weeks the UK can’t get enough of RAYE. It seems her dreams are coming true.

In February, the singer, whose birth name is Rachel Agatha Keen, released her much-anticipated debut studio album My 21st Century Blues. Along with ‘Escapism’ the album featured four other singles: ‘Hard Out Here’, ‘Black Mascara’, ‘The Thrill is Gone’, and ‘Ice Cream Man’. The album is RAYE’s first release as an independent artist having departed from her previous label Polydor Records in 2021. It was a hit with critics and the public alike receiving praise for its honest tackling of heavy subjects and debuted at number two on the UK album charts.

The sleazy teasy music video for ‘Escapism’ was released in November and now has over 48M views. In black lingerie, dripping with glitzy chains, and wearing long black chic gloves RAYE navigates heartbreak and anxiety numbing pain with unhealthy coping mechanisms in a distorted, red-lit club. It’s clear to see why the track has such a hold on the internet with RAYE’s straightforward honest attitude relatable to many girls who have turned partying to escape their problems instead of addressing them head on.  

On the second single from the album ‘Black Mascara’ RAYE hauntingly sings about being betrayed by her lover repeatedly chanting “done to me” against an upbeat rhythmic club beat. In an interview with DIY, the singer revealed the deeper meaning behind the track was an incident where she was spiked: “The overall theme is being a woman in this world and taking a step back to process all of the shit that’s actually been done to me, things that I’ve had to hide behind the scenes. I wrote that song specifically about a time when I got my drink spiked by a man I really liked. I trusted him”.

‘Ice Cream Man’ is a heart-breaking track on which RAYE bravely sings about the sexual assault she faced from a record producer earlier in her career. Despite the dark subject matter, RAYE shines through on the track as a powerful force with her strong and clear voice telling her fans “I’m a very very brave strong woman/ And I’ll be damned if I let a man ruin/How I walk, how I talk, how I do it”. The self-directed video for the track, released on 1^st March, features raw vulnerability from the singer as she openly cries in a bathroom. The end of the video encourages anyone that has had similar experiences to speak up with the message “this evil has more power over us in the dark than it does in the light”.

The tenth track on the album ‘Body Dysmorphia’ is another courageous song on which RAYE offers solace to those who have struggled with their body image. She opens up on the track in the verses voicing her perpetual anxiety over the aspects of her body she doesn’t like but the chorus offers a way forward. She sings “I don’t really like my body/ But knowing it’s my only body/I should prolly call somebody” therefore encouraging listeners who have a similar experience to talk to someone about it. She also implicitly encourages listeners to check up on their friends in the line “Matter fact, I’m glad you callеd me” suggesting that reaching out could help relieve someone struggling alone.

My 21^st Century Blues is a fitting title for the album. RAYE uses her platform to explore issues that many modern women struggle through with grace such as sexual assault, body dysmorphia, addiction, heartbreak, and anxiety over the state of our country and climate change, often juxtaposing her heavy lyrics with pounding beats. It’s an important record: a move forward towards pop albums that combine sonically pleasing tunes with lyrics that enlighten the world about some of the things that plague the minds of Gen Z. On the outro to the album RAYE personally thanks all her listeners as well as telling us she waited seven years for this moment – it’s a touching and triumphant for the artist.

RAYE is touring currently her My 21^st Century Blues Tour which started in Amsterdam in February playing across the US and will be heading back to Europe in November. Festival goers will be delighted to see that she is featured on a hefty amount of line-ups this year including Glastonbury, Mad Cool fest, Parklife, Longitude, Indiepence Arts & Music Festival, Jugend fest, Findings, Lowlands, Connect, Sundown, and Superbloom.

Now she has teamed up with the trip-hop inspired music producer from Leeds, Nightmares on Wax, to create a totally fresh track: ‘Top Steppa V2’. The song, originally released on Greentea Peng’s mixtape GREENZONE 108 back in September last year, has been given a new reggae groove with dubbed-out synths and a heavy entrancing bassline that will rock you to your core below Greentea Peng’s lush spaced-out vocals. 

George Evelyn started Nightmares on Wax in the late 80s crafting a unique sound of jazz, reggae, and trip-hop. Since then, he has released an impressive eight studio albums under the name. His love of music began at a young age when his father and sister introduced him to the likes of Quincy Jones and Curtis Mayfield.

This is not the first time the pair have worked together with Greentea featuring on Nightmares On Wax’s 2021 album Shout Out! To Freedom. Greentea Peng, born Aria Wells, said, “It was really nice working with Nightmares on Wax, a dear friend of mine and incredible musician to retwist Top Steppa and turn it into a completely new track. Big Love!”. Nightmares On Wax also said he totally connects with the energy Greentea Peng shares and through vibing he was able to tap into the iconic British expression of 90’s hip hop & 70’s roots reggae with a futuristic electronic twist that the song contains.

The mixtape GREENZONE 108 is not one to miss out on either. The 10 tracks are a fresh take on the dub genre mixing trip-hop sounds, with hip-hop beats and soulful vocals. Greentea Peng collaborated with several heavyweights in the music world including hip-hop producer Nat Powers, MJ Cole producer of ‘Bassline Junkie’, and St Francis Hotel who are frequent collaborators of Danger Mouse and Inflo.

GREENZONE 108 follows Greentea Peng’s debut album Man Made released in 2021 which is the ultimate vibe album. At 18 tracks long it’s the perfect length to chill to whilst you let the warm beats heal your soul – the album was even recorded at 432 Hz frequency to vibrate healing energy!

Last year Greentea Peng made her Glastonbury debut with her beloved band The Seng Seng Family giving a joyous performance. As her music is the perfect summer festival tunes we hope to catch her on the festival circuit at some point this year. Until then we’ll have ‘Top Steppa V2’ on repeat.

Rupaul – Black Butta – Release Date: January 6th

This Friday RuPaul is set to release his 15^th studio album Black Butta including 9 original tracks that are sure to make us wanna strut our stuff. The two lead singles of the album were released in early November: ‘Star Baby’ and Christmas tune ‘Show Me That You Festive’. The album follows Mamaru that came out in January last year and featured the ridiculously catchy ‘Catwalk’. There’s no doubt this will slay.

Sam Smith – Gloria – Release Date: January 27th

English singer-songwriter Sam Smith is dropping their much awaited fourth studio album Gloria at the end of this month fans will be delighted to hear. The singles ‘Love Me More’ and ‘Unholy’ featuring German singer Kim Petras released last year have already been super popular with ‘Unholy’ reaching number one in several countries and being used all over TikTok. The album consists of 13 songs as well as several features such as Koffee, Jessie Reyez, and none other than Ed Sheeran!

SG Lewis – AudioLust & HigherLove – Release Date: January 27th

On the same day as Sam Smith’s album we are blessed to be receiving dance pop king SG Lewis’ second studio album AudioLust & HigherLove. Having worked with pop royalty such as Dua Lipa, Clario and Jessie Ware we are so gassed to see what he has instore for us next. Featuring 15 funky tracks and fresh artists such as Tove Lo, Charlotte Day Wilson, Channel Tres, Ty Dolla $ign, and Lucky Daye we know that we won’t be able to stop boogieing to this LP.

Ellie Goulding – Higher Than Heaven – Release Date: February 3rd

Starting off February with style, British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding is releasing her fifth studio album Higher than Heaven. The album follows Goulding’s 2020 release Brightest Blue that reached number 1 in the UK. The 11-track album features the three singles ‘All By Myself’, ‘Let it Die’, and ‘Easy Lover’ featuring American rapper Big Sean. If the infectious pop tune ‘Easy Lover’ is anything to go by Higher Than Heavenshould be a treat.

Paramore – This Is Why – Release Date: February 10th

Everyone’s favourite pop punk band Paramore will be filling our 2023 with riotous tunes when they release their sixth studio album This Is Why in February. It’s their first album since their critically acclaimed and wildly popular After Laughter was released 6 years earlier. The album consists of 10 tracks boasting two fabulous singles: the title single ‘This Is Why’ and the punchy banger ‘The News’. Get out your hairbrush because you’re gonna wanna sing along to this album!

Caroline Polachek – Desire, I Want To Turn Into You – Release Date: February 14th

American pop diva Caroline Polachek is sure to bring us anthems in 2023 with the release of her fourth solo studio album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You releasing next month. The album will feature 12 tracks although only the titles of the singles – ‘Billions’, ‘Bunny is a Rider’, ‘Sunset’, and ‘Welcome to My Island’ – are known at the moment. Having just worked with Charli XCX, Christine and the Queens, and supported Dua Lipa on tour there’s no doubt this album will bring the campy drama.

Gorillaz – Cracker Island – Release Date: February 24th

Those cheeky mayhem-loving cartoon musicians are gearing up to share their eighth studio album Cracker Island at the end of February and we can’t wait to see what they have up their virtual sleeves. Damon Albarn of 90s Britpop band Blur is the voice and music behind the band with comic book artist Jamie Hewett providing the band’s loveable faces. The album consists of 11 tracks and features huge names such as Thundercat, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, Tame Impala, Bootie Brown, Bad Bunny, and Beck. The single ‘New Gold’ featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown is a funky delight bound to get you moving. Cracker Island promises to hold more funky gems.

Lana Del Rey – Did You Know There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd – Release Date: March 10th

Ladies get ready. The ultimate glamourous romantic Lana Del Rey will be supplying us new music to soundtrack our heartbreak in March. The kitschily named Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd will be Lana’s ninth studio album following Blue Banisters released late 2021. So far only the luscious orchestral title track has been released out of the 16 songs on the album – it already sounds like one of Lana’s most recent bests!

Miley Cyrus – Endless Summer Vacation – Release Date: March 10th

Pop superstar Miley Cyrus has been keeping us on our toes since her Hannah Montana days. Now the multi-platinum selling artist is grabbing our attention with the announcement of her eight-studio album Endless Summer. Miley describes the album as a love letter to LA, the place that she calls home. The first single from the album, ‘Flowers’, will be available to stream on 13^th January. With her previous album Plastic Hearts being one our all-time favs from 2020 we are over the moon to hear there’s more Miley coming our way!

Fresh new R&B girl band Flo already have a growing fanbase after releasing their popular single ‘Cardboard Box’ featured on the EP ‘The Lead’ last year. Now they have a new single out ‘Losing You’ released last month and have confirmed with Huffington Post that there will be a new album on the way in 2023. Watch this space!

Kylie Minogue

Ever since Kylie jumped on the trend and slayed the resurgence of disco with her simply titled ‘DISCO” bringing us all the vibes back in 2020 we have been gagging for more of her music. Looks like fans won’t have to wait for much longer. Kylie told the Sun last October that she was back in the studio and her next album’s sound is “super exciting”. Whatever it is we can’t wait.

Travis Scott – Utopia

Travis Scott’s follow up to his 2018 Astroworld may be just around the corner as he confirmed back in June via Instagram that he was in the studio. Titled Utopia this will be his fourth studio album. Speaking to i-D Scott revealed that he was working with new people in attempt to expand his sound. Sounds like exciting stuff to us.

The Weeknd… Rumoured

After the absolute gem of Dawn FM that The Weeknd gave us in 2022 we are greedily pleading for more, more, more. There’s a fan theory that Dawn FM is hinting to Abel’s next album perhaps being called After Lifeand the rumoured album completing a trilogy that begins with After Hours. We’re unsure of course but that would be incredible. With his world tour starting in June and ending in October it’s unlikely that we will receive a new album but a few singles or collabs wouldn’t go amiss! 

Jennifer Lopez – This Is Me…Now

Following the 20^th anniversary of This Is Me… Then last year J.Lo announced that she will be dropping a new album This Is Me Now. It will be the icon’s ninth studio album and also her first album since A.K.A. was released all the way back in 2014. She describes the album as an “emotional, spiritual, and psychological journey she has taken over the past two decades.” With 13 tracks we can’t wait to sink our teeth in. J.Lo we’ve missed you!

Shygirl

We’re hoping that our favourite house artist, hyperpop rapper, and ethereal princess Shygirl will present us with some more of her transcendent music this year. The artist has been pretty prolific releasing an EP in 2020, a handful of singles in 2021, and then her debut album Nymph in 2022. It’s just a hunch but please let it be true!

Debuting with the album ‘SweetSexySavage’ in 2017, we quickly became acquainted with the bad bitch persona Kehlani was pursuing, with tracks such as ‘Too Much’, ‘CRZY’ and ‘Do U Dirty’ hailing lyrics on the subject of being a badass. Five years on, Kehlani has entered a sweeter, brighter place, openly expressing this through a mellow, blissful and pristine soundscape. 

Kehlani took to Instagram to express her love for Pop Wansel, the executive producer of ‘Blue Water Road’, going on to say;

“the first time you pressed play to let me hear what you had taken and turned it into; i will never forget the sheer fucking AWE i was in of you. this wasn’t an album, this became a soundtrack! this was a score! you kept me patient when we had to sit on the album for a YEAR! you kept me confident when i was nervous because i didn’t think people wanted to hear me sing happy songs.”

We think we speak for everyone when we say we definitely want to continue hearing Kehlani sing happy songs! Lyrically, this is a place we haven’t seen Kehlani before, as they cover lyrics outside of the realms of love and relationships, heading more towards spiritual topics. This is particularly apparent in ‘Altar’, as the blend of her sweet vocal tone with meaningful lyrics based on nurturing relationships with relatives that have moved on to the afterlife creates a glorious sound that is irresistibly infectious. 

Another factor that confirms Kehlani is in a new headspace is the production of this album, which is more reserved than their previous works. Despite this, we feel the orchestral production serves its purpose greatly throughout the album, with the string sections heightening the emotion and joy reflected in the lyricism and vocal performance in tracks such as ‘little story’, ‘everything’ and ‘melt’. The album also hosts collaborations with a unique range of artists such as Justin Bieber, Syd, and Jessie Reyez (just to name a few). 

The contemporary sonic and lyrical components of ‘Blue Water Road’ represent Kehlani’s artistry most authentically whilst successfully bringing us on this new part of Kehlani’s journey. And, whilst we can’t wait to see the next destination, we’re going to soak up the current location first.

This includes; Khalid & Lucky Daye on “Come For Me” (Unlocked), Lil Wayne on “Nat King Cole” (Unlocked), Brandi Carlile on “Paper Flowers” (Originals), Pusha T on “Plentiful” (Originals) and Swae Lee on “LALA” (Unlocked). 

Speaking on the ‘KEYS’ Alicia said;

“This is my favourite project yet! It’s my lane and I’m driving in it. I love both sides – it’s like a Saturday and Sunday. You’re going to love this music!”

Alicia has released visualisers on Youtube for every album’s track, with the tracks ‘Best Of Me’ and ‘LALA’ coming with official music videos. Both songs are rich and irresistible, yet offer unique video concepts and sounds. 

Further allowing us to see her artistic vision, Alicia will take centre stage at the Expo 2020 Dubai UAE to perform in their Infinite Nights series, whilst appearing under the world’s largest 360-degree projection surface, the Al Wasl dome. This performance will see Alicia execute a medley of her biggest hits, celebrating 20 years of success, whilst also adding in some of her new material from ‘KEYS’. The performance will be available to livestream.

Prior to today’s release of ‘KEYS’, Alicia welcomed fans inside her world via the YouTube Originals four-part documentary series, “Noted: Alicia Keys The Untold Stories,” where she shared her journey from a vulnerable young star, to self-empowered woman, musician and mother. The series is available to watch exclusively on YouTube. 

As if she hadn’t already spoilt fans enough, Alicia has also announced that she will be embarking on a world tour in 2022, commencing in June in the UK. Tickets are available now!

Speaking on the album, Genesis says; “Goldilocks is that feeling when things feel “just right”. Like you’re entering a space that makes sense, you just can’t put your finger on why but it just does. You don’t know why you like it but you do. The X is the unknown factor, the experimental element, the punk.”

This is Genesis’ first LP since 2018, and will be the soundtrack to the goldilocks x World Tour in 2022, with dates scheduled across the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Russia.

Earlier this year Genesis released “Peppermint”, the lead single for her new album, which has gone on to gain over a million streams. The song is immediately identifiable, with her signature laid back vocal performance, yet keeping listeners captivated with the jaw-dropping suggestive lyricism.

“I always play with being in control and being super dominant and being really submissive, and even with the hook in peppermint where it’s like ‘I’m the type to take your money, take your soul, I leave no fingerprint. It’s also about saying whatever the fuck I want, like, I didn’t really plan it, I just sat down and wrote it.” Says Genesis.

This cool and outspoken attitude is further explored in the album’s second release, “a woman is a god”. The track brings a sound reminiscent of Azealia Banks’ “212″, which can be taken as a compliment, as Billboard enlisted “212” as a song that defined the last decade. With the feminism sparked lyrics, the cool demeanour and slick production, “a woman is a god” encapsulates the sound of Genesis’ latest album, leaving any lovers of expressive feminine hip-hop a safe place to explore.
