Voir recently had the pleasure to interview Sophie Castillo, an up-and-coming Latina indie musician before she jetted off to Miami, on her US tour. Sophie grew to fame after a viral TikTok of her song went viral and since has opening for the likes of J Balvin last summer. Sophie draws upon her Latina heritage and London upbringing to fuel her musical artistry as well as being influenced by singers like Lana Del Rey and indie 2000s rock bands. She has an EP coming out soon – the first single will be released on 28th February, followed by the full album in April.

One of the big things about your music is how you are inspired by your multicultural background. How has being a Londoner influenced your artistry?

Oh, I love that question as most people ask me about my Latin heritage! Growing up in London I listened to all the British music we like as teenagers especially rock and indie bands like The Arctic Monkeys, The Vaccines and The Kooks. It was the Tumblr days, that indie-sleaze era. But that at home we always had Latin music playing. 

Lana Del Rey has been my favourite singer since I was 13 when she released the Video Games music video – everyone was talking about it at school and I become obsessed with her lyrics.

You started singing at just three years old and performed in musical theatre early on. Do you think your theatrical background has shaped your stage presence as a performer? 

I did musical theatre from 5 to 13 and it really helped me train my ear through singing in a choir and practising harmonies. This has been essential when I am in the studio and am recording vocal production and harmonies in my songs. In terms of performance, it helps me views things from a more theatrical perspective in how to bring my performance to life. I can be a bit of a critic of myself but it’s important to analyse your performances and really put on a show.

What was it like gaining recognition through TikTok? How has this platform shaped your audience and the way they engage with your music?

TikTok for me has been a total game changer. It kickstarted my career. It was the most ridiculous TikTok that went viral. I was using a Cap Cut template and it was all blurry. I just posted it, like whatever, then it went super viral! It was the start of my career and helped me connect with lots of people all over the world. I was really D-I-Ying the whole music thing before that video.

You often blend languages in your songs, seamlessly switching between Spanish and English. Was this inspired by other Latina artists or was it a natural reflection of growing up in a bilingual household?

It is quite symbolic of my life to be honest. When I do English and Spanish it feels quite authentic to me, and it embodies this fluidity between culture and language. I quite like to make a point of using both languages – I feel more engaged with my audience. I prefer a Spanish chorus because the words have a nice and lively sound to them, and then a verse or pre-chorus in English.

How do you want people to experience your music? Where do you imagine them listening to it, and what kind of emotions do you hope to evoke?

I would definitely say in the car. My fans send me a lot of pictures of them listening in the car. I get so much inspiration when I’m travelling, on the tube or on the bus. I think because our lives are so busy, travelling is the only time we get to properly listen to music. 

You’ve already worked with some amazing artists, but who is your dream collaborator? 

100% Lana Del Rey. I love her so much. That would be a dream come true.

You are a key musician in the indie Latina music scene, but how do you see it evolving and changing over time and you yourself within it?

I find myself going through a bit of a sound evolution – I am getting older and more confident, and I’ve really enjoyed making some darker pop songs. I think major Spanish and Latina artists will start tapping more into salsa than reggaeton. I want to help bring more Latin genres to the front like salsa and bolero. 

If you weren’t a singer, what path do you think you would have pursued?

I really like fashion. During lockdown I was making clothes and selling them at home. I would have loved to have been a fashion designer. If not, then a doctor. I find medicine really interesting, and I love tv shows set in hospitals. I was watching The Good Doctor recently and loved it.

How your body looks is a testament to how hard it has fought and persevered. And this attitude is something we can all embody whether we’re breast cancer survivors or not and leading the way to self-love is none other than Kim Kardashian in her latest campaign to celebrate our bodies and what they are capable of.

While October certainly houses the season of frights, ghouls, and ghosts (we love you Halloween), October also explores a darker scare that we should all be aware of. October is breast cancer awareness month and while the focus should be on the fun things in life, we also need to pay special attention to our own health, as well as the wellbeing of those around us who may be feeling a little lost this month.

So, what better way to raise awareness and promote inclusivity that the queen of the Kardashian clan herself, Kim, to raise awareness in the promotion of her new Skims campaign; an ode to the wonderful Olivia Munn and her story.

Every scar tells a story of courage, a testament to a battle fought and a victory won. Scars are a mark of resilience, a symbol of strength worn like a second skin, and no one understands the importance of loving your scars like cancer survivors, and in particular, actress Olivia Munn. In March 2024, Olivia Munn revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer the previous year. After four surgeries, including a double mastectomy, Olivia expressed her relief that it was caught with enough time that she had options, emphasising the importance of checking and remaining aware.

To spread this message, SKIMS have dedicated this month to raising awareness in order to empower women to check themselves regularly and advocate for your health in the instance that you feel something is wrong. This October, Skims is proud to spotlight Olivia Munn’s breast cancer journey to empower women to get tested. From October 23rd to October 31st, SKIMS will be donating to Susan G. Komen, a breast cancer foundation, 10% of the retail sales for each bra sold in SKIMS stores and on SKIMS.com across their US stores and sites again showcasing that Kim is more than stunning businesswomen, she is a mother and individual devoted to empowering women and making sure everyone feels sexy and confident in the own skin.

]]> The runways are getting us ready for more than just the hopeful summer of 2021. With SS22 on the horizon, we take a look at some trends that are ready to take over your wardrobe next year. Voir is getting you prepped and primed for all summer seasons!

Suited And Booted

Everyone in fashion is always actively engaged in pulling looks from the archives. There isn’t a better example than suits and tailoring, with their endless possibilities and unrivalled charm. For this season, we’re seeing 2 main categories of trends comeback: the pastel-coloured suits with either flared or short trousers – as seen with Moschino and Nina Ricci respectively for their SS22 resort collection – patterned motifs with Anna Sui, and a monochromatic chocolate brown suit with Amiri.

Bodycon

Bold, timeless and sexy, the body con trend has dominated the SS21 catwalk and is here to stay. Many of the bodycon garments that were seen across the catwalk focus on giving the illusion of creating new volumes and shapes coming out of the skin, like Paco Rabanne’s futuristic, yet very retro cropped top with a long skirt, that could really only be classified as a future nostalgia moment. Other variations include the designer label V Project, which for their SS22 they created a series of short dresses that appear to be intertwining with twisted fabric around the centre, getting progressively thicker the closer it gets to the neck. Versace SS22 resort collection plays with latex and chunky gold jewellery, the pairing we didn’t know we needed, whereas the brands Alaia and David Koma SS22 collections offer a series of modest, elegant dresses, that play on sensuality by altering the sheerness of the fabrics and mastering, to perfection, the way the cut out holes hug the curves of the body.

Fringe Benefits

You cannot have missed the return of fringes on the catwalk. From Chanel opting for a grungy, edgy look, to Paco Rabanne bringing back the nostalgia of the disco era, the combinations are many, all so stunningly presented. Dior has maintained its quintessential elegance whilst David Koma explores new volumes and shapes with the trend.

Sports Day

This trend might sound controversial, not because of sports’ interaction with fashion, but because coming out of an almost two year period spent almost entirely by wearing sports clothing – since no one had to physically see us – and then seeing the same type of clothing being represented on the catwalk, we understand it might be disturbing for some. But these brands will stretch your imagination for how creative and innovative sportswear can be. Starting off with Stella McCartney, her take on the classic cargo pant is different, unique and feels fresh in such a saturated category. Versace’s and Opening Ceremony’s resort 2022 collections make athleisure wear exciting again, thanks to their use of colours and patterns.

Goddess Dressing

Looking good with this styling is inevitable. People will question whether you’ve just returned from Olympus, because you will truly look like a goddess. Ellie Saab plays with flowy fabrics and cheerful colours: yellow seems to have returned to the runway, rightfully so, as we only really need lightness as of right now in fashion. Huishan Zhang SS22 and Christian Dior SS22 dresses from their resort collections drape the body in total luxury, with rich purples and light yellow fabrics, respectively.
