The streets of fashion week are just as much of a show as the runways and often showcase the more accessible of the trends displayed on the catwalks. They show how real people are taking the inspiration they are seeing at shows and putting their own spin on it. We thought we’d give a breakdown of some reoccurring trends we saw on the streets of NYC.

Pops Of Red

One trend we’ve been seeing everywhere for the last few months is the pops of red, or full monochromatic red looks. We’ve loved seeing this on runway but seeing it from a street style point of view is even more special. Seeing how people fit it into their own personal style and make it work in a non-commercial way is so much more genuine.

We’ve been seeing a lot of red coming in in regard to accessories and footwear, specifically ballet flats and handbags. We’ve also seen come incredible red hair accessories this fashion week – bows, hairclips, and anything else you can possibly think of.

Statement Scrunchies

Continuing along the pop of colour trend, one thing we noticed among some particularly stylish looks at NYFW, was how many people chose to incorporate a pop of colour into their looks through a big statement scrunchie. We are particularly fond of the look below by fashion lover and fashion week attendee Aisha Farida.

Bubble Skirts

Bubble Skirts are definitely an up-and-coming spring summer staple. Whilst they give us a flashback to the bubble skirts of the early 2000’s, we are ready to embrace 2024’s take on the iconic bubble skirt with open arms. They offer us to have our legs out and feel more weather appropriate as we come into the warmer months while not having to sacrifice any of the character of our style in doing so. 

We are starting to see them slowly trickle down to more affordable high street stores after being all the rage on runway in 2023, just in time for Spring/Summer. They are also so versatile when it comes to styling, we love the monochromatic pieces used in this styling by an attendee of the Sandy Liang show, and the stunning silhouette it creates.

Bonnets

Bonnets and Balaclavas have been in the fashion world for a while now, and while the rise of the trend was totally unpredictable, the origin could be traced back to Dior’s cruise collection in 2022 in which several of the looks came with matching bonnets. They are a bit of a marmite of the fashion world, as you either love them or hate them. But we are not one to turn down aa quirky accessory so are completely here for it.  Bonnets are the perfect way to add a touch of chic whimsy to otherwise, simple outfits.

Oversized Coats

Coats are never out of style, especially somewhere with weather that reaches below freezing temperatures, and this Fashion Week our favourite fashionable New Yorkers didn’t disappoint, and strutted the streets with some particularly chic outerwear. Neutrals were huge, particularly darker browns as well as colours more fitting for the coming spring months like the stunning mint green embossed coat below.

]]> Japanese style is both futuristic and nostalgic, combing current trends with vintage designs and layering pieces on pieces to create unique fashion statements. These 10 looks play with traditionally masculine and feminine materials and styles, capturing the youth culture of 21st-century Japan.

Models Aya and Ami put their own twist on the see-through dress trend, layering matching tulle Chika Kisada dresses over baggy t-shirts for the show. They dressed up the casual look with matching chunky green boots and silver chains, which contrasted with the delicate tulle.

For the Inscrire runway show, this influencer wore a vintage Maison Margiela dress from the spring/summer 1997 collection. The purple Inscrire track pants brought an athletic and preppy vibe to the outfit, contrasting with the industrial burlap tunic. She tied the look together with black leather accessories: a Hermès belt bag, Margiela tabis, and an Acne Studios biker jacket.

For the day three Yohei Ohno show, this influencer was channeling 60s fashion with the polka dots. She incorporated the pattern on her blouse and the strap of her bag. She matched this with black knee-high boots, which contrasted with the pale lemon yellow shorts and shirt. The tailored shorts add an androgynous sense to the outfit and contrast with the femininity of the silk blouse.

The fourth look combines many different styles and textures to create a preppy outfit, inspired by 90s Ralph Lauren and actress Yuki Uchida. The fashion journalist, Yu Masui, has reworked a jumper and top to create a layered athletic jersey and paired this with a long tartan kilt. The skirt is followed by loose, rolled socks and shiny brogues, resembling a school uniform. He tops off the outfit with bedazzled hair clips and love heart earrings.

The next looks come from stylist Yan and director Yuri, who combine vintage pieces to create two very aesthetically varied outfits. Yan mixes lace, fur, and ruffles for her feminine and romantic look. On the other hand, Yuri layers multiple belts around his waist and knees and finishes the outfit with Balenciaga sneakers for a modern and edgy look.

The next look comes from Naoya (right), who channels school uniform once again, incorporating the huge influence of anime, schoolgirls, and ‘seishun’ on Japanese fashion. He layers a vintage leather coat and Offshore parker over a Ralph Lauren shirt, a vintage tie, black shorts, and finishes the look with black Zara brogues and white socks.

For this outfit, Japanese TikToker Mari dressed head-to-toe in Maison J. Simone ahead of the show. She played on the boys’ boxers trend, showing the waistband underneath a foil plaid skirt, and pairing this with thigh-high patent boots. She wore a ribbed white tank top to match the boxers, layered a cropped blazer on top, and accessorised with a crochet net purse.

This model duo channeled Britney and Justin in their all-denim outfits for the Tanaka show. The outfits were very cowboy-inspired, with his wide-leg pants and button-down shirt combining the Wild West with modern trends, thanks to the pale yellow shade and ripped kneecaps. She channelled cowboy style through a western-style studded belt, a classic patchwork denim dress, and detailed cowboy boots.

This next set of outfits, worn by models Maria (left) and Lisei (right), once again mixes elegant tulle with chunky leather boots. Maria’s Chika Kisada dress is layered over black sequin flares and boxy square-toed boots and adorned with a y2k chainmail shrug. Lisei wears transparent Chika Kisada biker shorts over boxers, adding a masculine feel that balances out her tulle tank top. She finishes off the outfit with a pair of chunky Chelsea boots and a red lip.

10.

The final look, created by vintage store owner Ruka, instantly catches your attention with these fur trousers. Handmade from a fur coat, these are guaranteed to keep your legs warm in the winter.

The top is also handmade, combining a white mesh shirt with a ripped black blazer. She styles it with black Puma platforms and futuristic sunglasses for the Khoki show.

Kendall Jenner first brought the spotlight to this trend, sporting tights with just a jumper and slingbacks on the streets of LA. Her sister Kylie and fellow model Bella Hadid have also been photographed wearing white boxers to attend fashion week and run errands. Kylie went head to toe in Loewe, pairing white boxers with a tank top, grey cashmere coat, tights, and heels. Bella kept it simple by layering a leather jacket over a micro-tee and white briefs and accessorising with white athletic socks, mini platform Uggs, and sunglasses to eat pizza on the streets of NYC.

Get The Underwear look:

Fans were divided when Kendall stepped out in the revealing outfit, with many people on Instagram saying this would ‘never’ be a trend. Is this the next stage in the Miu Miu micro miniskirt and Diesel belt-skirt saga? ‘No pants’ has been seen repeatedly through fashion month, both on the runway and on the front row. Miu Miu presented bedazzled underpants with everyday-wear, while Christian Siriano paired tights with silk blazers and bold-coloured details.

For New York Fashion Week’s Coach FW23 show, Camila Mendes wore nothing but black underwear, an oversized leather jacket, and loafers, despite it being February.

However, this trend has a history far beyond fashion week and paparazzi shots. Remember the 60s hype after the Elvis movie was released this summer? Ann-Margret, his co-star in Viva Las Vegas, was a big fan of the no pants look, opting to style it with a high neck top. Also in the 60s, actress Edie Sedgwick was often seen wearing just tights or fishnets with a fur coat, the wardrobe inspo behind many 2010s styles like those worn by Sienna Miller and Kate Moss.

Another 60s trend that has come back into fashion recently is knee-high boots. This staple wardrobe piece elongates your legs and goes perfectly with the no-pants look.

It doesn’t sound like an awful idea for a hot, sweaty nightclub, but if that isn’t your scene, then why not try it for your workout class? Balletcore has been trending on TikTok for a while now, with over 440 million views on the hashtag. Clearly, the no-pants trend has practical uses and would look super chic at reformer Pilates.

Amina Muaddi

Leave it to Amina to give us a deliciously styled look as she attended the Prada show earlier this week. Her look consisted of a silk two piece with contrasting colours of grey and burnt orange separating the top and bottom half of the garment. She styled this beautiful look with an oversized black blazer and platform open-toe heels alongside some golden earrings.  

This look can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the occasion, her oversized blazer gives it a streetwear aesthetic but alternately the wedged heels make it more of an evening look. The options are endless with a look like this one and that’s why it is always worth having some of the staple pieces that Amina is styling in your closet.   

Carolina Daur

Carolina Daur looked incredible at Paris fashion week with Dior in her yellow and black printed puffer dress and her lace up below the knee booties. The look is boujee and gives off, the character, Serena Vanderwoodsen energy with the short skirt and the effortlessly beautiful aesthetic. Her adorable mini yellow bag to match is the cherry on top of this fabulous look.  

She styled this look with silver jewellery which complements the colour scheme beautifully as this look includes three main colours, silver, yellow and black. As a rule of thumb, it is a good hack to use three dominant colours in any fashion look to help allow the colour scheme to shine and not be too overpowering to each other. She has carried this look beautifully and we are totally obsessed.  

Jessica Wang

Love a glitter moment? This dress is everything you could wish for, Jessica has styled an off the shoulder black glitter dress that looks divine on. She has paired it with patterned tights and high platform heels alongside a gold mini bag to tie it all together.  

This look oozes glamour as you could imagine it being worn at awards ceremonies, fancy nights out and premiers. She looks like an old Hollywood actress and we are totally in love with it.  

Leonie Hanne

Bonjour Paris, Leonie is pictured sitting elegantly on a terrace with the scenic city of love as her back drop as she styles an extravagant fully pink dress that quite literally could be pictured on a runway. She styled this exotic fluffy pink garment with a sophisticated baby pink purse and platform pink heels, tre magnifique!  

Leonie looks like a real life barbie doll here and she is rocking it incredibly. We love how her shoes, purse and dress are all colour coordinated and look irresistibly fabulous.  

Yendry

Yendry is giving us sass and confidence as she rocks a look curated by Balmain. Looking feisty and sexy in this fit, that has characteristics that are similar to the beautiful cheongsam dresses, the black velvet material combined with the bold gold buckles are a match made in heaven, they compliment each other beautifully and look stunning when paired with a matching purse.  

The slit on the side of the garment is very flattering on Yendry and allows her shoes to get some of the spotlight too. This outfit is irresistible and one that like Yendry said herself, needs no caption.  

Kim Kardashian

Kim was giving us a sexy outfit that looked utterly incredible. This sassy look included a two piece that has fuchsia snake print embellished on it, alongside matching pink books that also included the snake print detailing on. The look is super glam and is very Hollywood energy. She styled this look with a double cross combo that had a pink glass stained centre alongside a matching snake print choker to tie the look together.  

Kim really turned heads with this look and it’s a great party piece to take inspiration from for your next big night out.  

Alexandra Pereira

Alexandra styles a glittering look as she attended the Paco Robanne show that paid a special homage to the visionary founder of the house, whom recently passed. She has a glittery vision and styles a full length dress that has stars spaced out all along the garment. She styled this look with feline sunglasses and a stylish mini green bag.  

The green and the black dress is a lovely combination as the green adds that little bit of colour and fun to the look. Wearing a black outfit allows you to go to town with your accessories as you can match every and any colour with a black outfit and change the vibe of the look easily at any moment.  

Gabrielle Caunesil

Who remembers tie dye? Gabriella is bringing it back to the main stage in a subtle but noticeable way with her outfit that is a cross between the tie dye and holographic era mixed with mesh vests.  Her look is pretty and includes a beautiful selection of pastel dainty colours with embroidered sequins as well as a bandeau that has swirls on that resemble the tie dye look.  

This look is very elegant and perfect for a dinner or a show where you want to be fashionable as well as not too over the top. The embroidered sequins on her skirt and vest are a lovely finishing detail that levels up this look and gives it that little sparkle. She had accessories for this look with block sunglasses and minimal silver jewellery. 

Chiara Ferragni

Chiara was looking unreal in her outfit styled by Dior that consisted of a sheer see through black vest, a long wrap around skirt that has a slit along the side, triangle tights and just below the knee boots. This look was very eye-catching and very bold, something we love here at Voir.  

She styled minimal silver accessories with this look which allowed the fashion to do all the talking. We especially loved the combination of the triangle cut out tights with the black boots and this combo can be worn everyday as well as for special occasions, it’s a must have combo to have in your wardrobes.  

Kicki Yangz

Kicki has gone for a very industrial street wear look that includes an oversized shirt, small crop top and distressed black jeans. Her shoes have studded details on the top of the toe to add that extra element of punk rock to this look. This is the sort of look we imagine Berlin fashion scene styling with a heavy emphasis on the moody punk aesthetic.  

She accessories this look with big black sunglasses that she wears on her head as an accessory to the look more than a functional element. This is a very cool and edgy look and one that you could style anywhere.  

Charlotte Lawrence

Charlotte was looking very sexy and almost feline like in this mesh bodysuit that hugged her figure beautifully. This outfit consisted of a lace bodysuit, black underwear, under the knee black boots and a long oversized black coat. Curated by YSL, this look is undeniably alluring and gives off an almost lingerie aspect to the fit.  

We love the fact that the mesh material goes all the way down to Charlotte’s hands and doubles up as a pair of gloves for her. The detailing on the body suit is beautiful and is sure to cause a stir when styled.

The most inspirational fashion looks are not limited to those in the shows, with some of the best coming from the attendees and afterparties. With this in mind, here are some streetstyle moments from NYFW that you do not want to miss.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski attended the off-schedule Marc Jacobs show in an archival look from the designer’s 2014 Autumn/Winter collection. The monochromatic brown look played with texture from the sheer V-neck top to the jacket’s fur collar. She paired the look with a dramatic bob-haircut with a full-fringe that elevated the already chic look even further.

Julia Fox

Julia Fox is quickly becoming everyone’s favourite for streetstyle looks. Whether she’s doing her weekly shop in her underwear and knee-high denim boots or using duct tape as a top, Julia Fox always provides a daring look, no matter the occasion. And if those are the outfits that Julia wears when running errands then you can only imagine what she pulls out of the bag for Fashion Week. Fox attended the Seks NYFW party in a full leather look from the brand. The black belted micro-mini was paired with an orange crop-top and leather jacket with elaborate feather trim. The look was topped off with a grey hair look with provided a cool contrast to the orange details in the outfit.

Ice Spice

Ice Spice made her New York Fashion Week front row debut at the Dion Lee show this week and she definitely earned her place. Wearing a full lace look with Dion Lee’s signature cut-outs, this was the first of her many ‘best dressed’-worthy moments. She paired the modern outfit with a sleek old Hollywood glamour inspired hairdo, a styling decision that perfectly blended two aesthetic binaries.

Camila Mendes

This New York Fashion Week Camila Mendes took the ‘no-pants’ trend to the catwalk. Styled by Molly Dickson (@mollyddickson) Cami attended the Coach show in an oversized leather jacket with black high-waisted underwear and a bralette underneath. The look was accessorised with a pair of studded loafers and a bag. The decision to accessorise the look so simply served to emphasise the lack of outfit, creating an effortless yet intentional feel to the look. All in all, Cami Mendes really proved that less actually is more.

Aweng Chuol

Aweng Chuol attended the RTA x FWRD dinner in a blue Jacquemus dress with an abundance of cut-outs. The slinky knotted dress was paired perfectly with some chunky gold jewellery and sleek black accessories. At times throughout the night Aweng paired the look with a brown fur duster coat that exuded elegance.

Amelia Gray Hamlin

Amelia Gray Hamlin also attended the RTA X FWRD dinner, she however opted for a much more gothic look for the appearance. She paired her black maxi dress with sheer tights and barely-there heels. In fact, the only non-black element of her look was the large silver cross around her neck.

Julia Fox (again)

This would not be a NYFW Streetstyle article without at least two Julia Fox looks in the conversation, and so here she is again. This time Julia was sitting front row at the Dion Lee show, a fashion pairing made in heaven. Julia’s grey hair was the perfect accessory to her edgy look for the fashion brand. Her heavily zipped leather skirt was paired with a matching jacket that starkly contrasted her hyper-feminine feathered heels. However, what stole the show was her explicit graphic tee that read “Starf*cker”, just when we thought she couldn’t get any more iconic.

Ice Spice and Lil Nas X

The duo that we never knew we needed; Lil Nas X and Ice Spice sat front row at the Coach AW23 show and all eyes were on them. Lil Nas wore a Valentine’s inspired ensemble pairing a vibrant red shearling jacket with a pink turtleneck, distressed jeans, red boots and a bag to match. Ice Spice, however, went down the preppy route wearing a varsity inspired A-line dress that contrasted her extravagant diamond chain.

Leonie Hanne

Leonie Hanne brought all of the drama to the Prabal Gurung show this NYFW. If the show stopping strapless SS23 fuchsia and black Guipure Lace mini dress wasn’t enough, Hanne matched the look with a dramatic pink scarf that wrapped over her hair and then flowed freely behind her. The look was topped off with sheer coloured tights, tulle heels and a simple black bag.

Charli XCX

Charli XCX performed at the Saks NYFW Party in an enviable double-denim look from Ludovic de Saint Sernin. She paired the monogrammed lace-up dress with a matching denim racer jacket and knee-high combat boots. She accessorised with a black crescent bag and some futuristic sunglasses to make the perfect ‘New York party girl’ look.
