Róisín Pierce is a rising star on the Paris Fashion Week scene, bringing her Irish heritage to the forefront with beautiful, authentic craftsmanship. Like Isabel Marant, Stella McCartney embraces office-inspired fashion, but with a bold twist. The latest collection, Laptop to Lap Dance, redefines workwear by seamlessly blending office attire with party-ready looks. Designed as the ultimate desk-to-dancefloor capsule, the show’s setting—complete with office desks, water coolers, and photocopy machines—felt like a fashion-forward take on The Office.

McCartney also channels the power of the ’80s with strong silhouettes and statement power suits, making the collection a perfect tribute to female confidence and empowerment—just in time for International Women’s Day. With a mantra of Work Hard, Play Harder, Stella McCartney proves that workwear can be just as bold, fun, and unapologetically powerful as the women who wear it.

Exciting debuts

This season also saw the exciting debuts of two renowned designers stepping into new creative roles. Haider Ackermann made his much-anticipated debut for Tom Ford, delivering a collection that emphasized fit, silhouette, and bold yet minimalistic colour statements. With a focus on precision and modern tailoring, the collection felt effortless proving that sometimes, simplicity speaks the loudest.

Sarah Burton also unveiled her first collection for Givenchy, drawing inspiration from the house’s 1952 post-war debut. The designs reflected a clean, professional aesthetic—uncluttered and refined, honouring the legacy of the brand while keeping it relevant for today.

The initial idea for a collaboration to take shape was the brainchild, of up-and-coming strategy and communications agency Neverland.  

“When you put the combined ambition of these brands into the hands of our future creative thinkers, with the right technology, amazing things will happen.” said Neverland co-founder Jon Forsyth. 

At the end of the two-month initiative, Stella McCartney aims to offer a three-month internship to one winning student who was deemed the most impressive. There the student will have the ability to rotate between multiple departments before settling on their choice. 

As part of the collaboration, Lenovo will be providing one of their new next-generation, ultra-slim Windows 11 Yoga laptops to each student taking part.

Course Director, Simon Fraser stated that sustainability and ethicality of production is an urgent challenge within each of their disciplines, and that they were delighted to have the opportunity to test the principles and practices of MA Design with former alumni Stella McCartney and the Lenovo team.

McCartney said that her vision for the students is to develop something “entirely new” in the realm of sustainable fashion. Ms McCartney would love to reinvent the wheel and find something that could both reduce the impact of the original process as well as replace the traditional way of working within the fashion industry. 

“Only in the last few years have we seen the innovation ramp up, which shows me how timely this student project is,” said the designer.  

The partnership also sees Lenovo’s vision to become net-zero by 2050, the company have expressed that 100% of their PCs will contain post-consumer recycled materials, as well as 90% of their packaging. 

The collaboration comes at a pinocle time in history where the concept of change is in everybody’s trajectory. It is exciting that we live in a time where powerhouse fashion companies can collaborate with tech giants, such as Lenovo to elicit change and make the world more sustainable.

As Paris Fashion Week draws to a close, Voir has your final rundown of unforgettable shows.

Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney is the pioneer of ethical fashion, her designs repeatedly remind us that neglecting leather and fur doesn’t mean leaving behind quality and style. Her FW22 show (set in an ultra-modern Parisian dome) created silky skirts, denim flight suits and fluffy trench coats in a colour palette of pastel tones. The designer made use of fluid shapes and negative space to create an artistic and lively, yet wearable collection.

To create the collection, McCartney worked with artist Frank Stella, using his work as inspiration. The parallels between Stella’s work and McCartney’s designs are evident in her use of abstract prints in a minimalist meets maximalist style. On working with the artist, Stella admitted to Vogue it was “scary because he has incredibly good taste”. Despite this, the two came together to create an amalgamation of artsy prints and high fashion silhouettes.

Louis Vuitton

With more prints and patterns than imaginable, Nicolas Ghesquiere captured the beauty and culture of Paris through an old money inspired FW22 collection showcased at the Musee d’Orsay. Moving away from the strict gender codes that once held a tight grip over the fashion industry, Louis Vuitton’s newest collection saw women in traditional menswear from ties to pinstripe pants.

The collection blurred the lines between streetwear and couture silhouettes as loose-fitting sweaters were placed over flaring maxi skirts in floral prints. Playing on the trending old-money style garments, collared sweaters synonymous with vintage golf wear were paired with pocketed dungaree dresses. The quaint collection complemented the romantic marble setting.

The show’s audience was filled with the fashion house’s muses. Sarah Paulson and Emma Chamberlain sat in the front row, a prime spot to watch Squid Game’s HoYeon Jung open the show in a brunette boxy jacket.

Givenchy

Since becoming creative director of Givenchy, Matthew Williams has turned the house into a pioneer of alternative modern fashion by blending key house codes like feminine elegance with fashion-forward flair.

For his FW22 collection, Williams brought nostalgic noughties grunge back to the forefront. Baggy band tees, tight-fitting tanks, and leather boots transported us to the days of Nirvana- fever as fierce models stormed the runway to futuristic beats.

While the collection was fun and light-hearted, the fashion house did not fail to pay their respects to those currently suffering in Ukraine; Givenchy sent both blue and yellow looks between the emo wear to show solidarity with the war-torn country.

Schiaparelli

Schiaparelli took their legendary surrealist designs to new heights with a vintage horror-inspired FW22 collection. Claws, cone bras, and torso shaped purses each featured in a black and white filter- looking back to Elsa Schiaparelli’s phantasmagorical accessories (like the telephone shaped handbag) for inspiration.

Daniel Roseberry also drew inspiration from gothic cult movies, like Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands, as model Mila Vaneeten was accessorised with knives posing as gloves. The model’s gleaming smiles contrasted the moody garments as Rouguy posed in a monochromatic black look featuring iconic cones, studs, and swirls that the brand has become known for.

Akris

Drawing inspiration from Reinhard Voigt’s artwork, squares and geometric patterns dominated Akris’ FW22 collection. Incorporating pixellated prints onto trenchcoats and blazers, the garments were vibrant and futuristic. Creating an optical illusion through abstract prints, designer Albert Kriemler brought navy and grey looks to Paris Fashion Week.

Even the show’s setting fit the square trend as models stormed a light and open square-based building designed by Kriemler’s long time friend Sou Fujimoto.

Giambattista Valli

Capturing the fierce street style of Parisian women, Italian designer Giambattista Valli looked to vintage French street style to create an elegant day and nightwear collection. Floral gowns, leopard print blazers, and frothy frills came together to create an eclectic mix of textures encapsulating the highlights of a 1960s wardrobe.

Incorporating abstract accessories into the collection, dangerously chunky heels, oversized bows, and upside-down sunglasses played to an OTT representation of day-to-day Parisian attire. Speaking about the show to Vogue, the designer admitted the collection took a swift turnaround in response to the Ukrainian crisis. Valli wanted his designs to symbolise hope amongst the turbulence of the times- a goal he achieved through fun-loving florals and bright pastel designs.

Chanel

Since the days of Coco, tweed has served as Chanel’s staple material. As an ode to the brand’s history, Chanel’s current creative director (Virginie Viard) incorporated the material onto traditional skirt suits, dresses, and blazers. The show was a glamorous exploration of Chanel’s ‘eternal house code’.

The checked fabric featured in a wide range of shades and designs. Bright red suits and sage green wellingtons reminisced nostalgic royal attire while tweed mini dresses were a nod to England in the 1960s. The British influence on Chanel has been apparent since the label’s initiator (Gabrielle Coco Chanel) had a love affair with The Duke of Westminster. Since then the French fashion house has taken in inspiration from our practical wellingtons to cosy cardigans; this collection shows the tight relationship between English dressing and Chanel isn’t set to stop anytime soon!

Miu Miu

After the success of their SS22 pleated mini-skirt worn by icons from Hailey Bieber to Nicole Kidman, Miu Miu continued their ultra-mini legacy with tiny skirts and even tinier shorts in a minuscule length. Keeping to a clean and modern aesthetic, the creative director of Miu Miu (Fabio Zambernardi) perched white scarfs around model’s necks while knee-high socks threw us back to vintage Wimbledon matches. The most jaw-dropping look from the FW22 collection was donned by supermodel Adut Akech who charged the runway a sequined see-through two-piece paired with high-rise socks and sturdy black pumps.

The campaign captures models wearing McCartney’s creations while donning costume animal heads as they take a joyful visual journey through the streets of London. The campaign was also made into a mockumentary shot by Mert & Marcus, and narrated by David Walliams.

“Over the last year, as human activity slowed, we saw creatures of all stripes and sizes return to global cities,” the brand states on their website, with these changes allowing for “a stylish fantasy where these species live freely and reclaim their places amongst humans, boldly declaring: Our time has come!”

McCartney has been long famous for her dedication to animal- and eco-friendly fashion. And this time around, her efforts are made more impressive by the fact that this collection is her most sustainable yet — with her Autumn 2021 offerings being made of 80% environmentally friendly materials.This work also aims to encourage the audience to sign The Humane Society International’s petition to create a fur-free society.

McCartney noted that “While this campaign is light-hearted, I wanted to address a serious issue: ending the use of fur. Whether it is being sold here in the United Kingdom or farmed globally, barbarism knows no borders and this effort is key to my life’s mission of bringing a conscience to the fashion industry. I am proud to partner with Humane Society International and to help raise awareness of the incredible work they do—please join us in ending this horrendous practice by signing their petitions now.”

The industry of fashion is trying to reinvent itself in many ways; allowing more diversity in, becoming an inclusive community, and even putting efforts to become a more environmentally aware sector. We have been witnessing gradual and positive changes, ones that many of us were fighting for, but unusual ones as well. Unusual ones like the inclusion of mushrooms in everyday wear.

Who would’ve ever thought that mushrooms could be fashionable? Well, get ready, because they might become a new staple material in the fashion world (and a more responsible one too).

The mysterious and wide category of fungi has become increasingly popular over the past years in the medical sector, with their researched use resulting beneficial to a range of problems such as mental health and unbalanced diets. Their popularity and benefits now seem to have expanded from the medical sector, even reaching the fashion one by becoming an alternative to leather.

As much as we may love it, leather is not the most sustainable of choices… It is an animal product that goes against the efforts to become more environmentally aware, it is also considered unsuitable by vegans, vegetarians and various religious groups. For this reason, many brands have often opted for artificial substitutes. But these are starting to be questioned due to their oil-derived plastics necessary for the production fo artificial leather.

Mushrooms, on the other hand, have become a viable guilt-free alternative as proven by brands like Stella Mccartney who recently just launched her first collection made out of Mylo’s Unleather. Mylo’s Unleather, created by Bolt Threads, derives from mycelium which represents the root system of fungi, and looks just like leather but with a lower environmental cost.

To our surprise, the British fashion designer is not the only one to jump in this new direction. Hermès has recently announced their partnership with MycoWorks, to produce their own fungi alternative to leather, with a material known as Sylvania, which will be incorporated into the production of their luxury goods such as for their iconic “Victoria” travel bag.

This initiative being taken by high fashion brands seems like an encouraging step towards the right direction in the fashion world. Nonetheless, we have yet to see how these products will be welcome by the public and other fashion houses, but it’s worth looking out for because if they are as promising as they seem, it may represent the so awaited goodbye to both animal and plastic derived leather.

Stella McCartney is continuing to break the taboo surrounding breast cancer with her 2020 campaign, A Letter To My Loved Ones.

She has been running the campaign since 2015. It is just one of her campaigns in the pursuit to raise Breast Cancer Awareness. In 2018 Idris Elba joined forces with Stella McCartney for “All is Love”, a short film that sheds light on the destructive disease.

A Letter To My Loved Ones sees Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario and filmmaker and activist Alice Aedy capture 12 women who bravely bare their ‘battle scars’ post-mastectomy.

Each woman in the campaign handwrites a letter to the people closest to them, those who were a source of motivation. It is an inspiring photo series and hero film which depicts the resilience of these women.

A Letter to My Loved Ones – Stella McCartney

A Letter To My Loved Ones grounds the experience of breast cancer into reality by focusing on the women’s personal relationships. The result is inspiring and uplifting, showing how light can be found during the darkest of times.

One of the subjects, Emma Campbell wrote to her daughter Ella that “cancer has shown me how incredibly strong I am. Cancer has taught me resilience. Cancer has brought my life into sharp, vivid, technicolored focus.”

Stella McCartney lost her own mother Linda to breast cancer in 1998 and has dedicated much of her work to Breast Cancer Awareness. Stella McCartney Cares Pink is a platform dedicated to the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer through education, awareness and support.

For 2020, sales of the Whitney Popping lingerie set will support the Stella McCartney Cares Foundation – donating to breast cancer initiatives around the world including the Hello Beautiful Foundation in London.

is Stella McCartney’s way of making a deeper contribution to the plight for awareness, by giving a platform to those directly effected by breast cancer. The letters offer an intimate insight into the strength, determination and courage it takes to fight breast cancer.

Stella McCartney raises up each star of the campaign’s scars and stories as beautiful depictions of human resilience, releasing the inhibitions which surround breast cancer and mastectomies.

The fabric? A sustainable textile made from plant-based yarns, free from plastics. A denim revolution! In spring 2019, brand Tommy Hilfiger already innovated in the blue fabric universe, launching a range of jeans made of 100% recycled cotton. The production process of this denim is then using less water and less energy. And the American brand continues its sustainable innovations, now selling environment-friendly sneakers partly made from recycled apple fibre!

Pineapple Leather and Grape FabricFrench fashion house Claudie Pierlot collaborated with Parisian brand Andrea Crews to create an eco-friendly capsule collection for spring and summer 2020. Among six sustainable streetwear items, a futuristic bumbag. Its aspect is metallic, its leather exotic! This innovative material is actually composed of pineapple leaves, agricultural waste that would have been burnt otherwise. An alternative to the use of animal skins.

H&M has also launched a Conscious Exclusive collection for this current spring and summer. Inspired by the Golden Age of rail journeys and its elegant Train Bleu, a sleeper train which used to run from Calais in the north of France to the French Riviera during the twenties, its formula rhymes with cocktail dresses, glamorous one-shoulder top and retro swimsuits, but also Circulose®, Econyl®, RenuTM, and VegeaTM. Understand, a material produced from recycled textiles, regenerated nylon notably made from fishing nets, recycled polyester and finally vegan leather made from grape skins and stalks. An interesting mix of 1920s inspirations and modern fabrics!
