Genesis was also one of Versace’s muses for their AW17 campaign and has been a Fenty ambassador since 2019. Rihanna even hand-picked and interviewed her for the Rihannazine, a special issue of i-D curated by her.

The global popstar is not the only major artist that noticed Tommy’s avant-garde rap and orgasmic adlibs; she’s since collaborated with Deb Never in ‘Same’, been featured in Charli XCX tandem track Bricks, and joined efforts with Jozzy for ‘Gone’, a track heard on the widely popular HBO’s Euphoria. After the lights dimmed at Undercover, we assumed the finale had just occurred, but as gasps and exclamations echoed from the beginning of the runway, we knew we were about to witness fashion history. Three models were languishing down the runway wearing glow-in-the-dark birdcage dresses with live gardens and butterflies inside. The glasshouse 3D pieces are one of the most talked about moments of the season, so it’s to one’s surprise that the designer responsible is the ever-inventive Jun Takahashi. Even the harsh, fan-favorite critic @hautelemaude was impressed. Unlike the one-and-done marketing gimmicks we’re used to seeing from brands, the dresses seamlessly blended with the rest of the collection and its theme: the surreal contrast between dark and light. Backstage Takahashi shared that “He feels like he’s stuck in the world, but he wants to release himself.”

This sense of existing in limbo was in the see-through veils and loose, feminine silhouettes that billowed like fading memories. The opening sheer tailored suits showed razors, playing cards, and flowers trapped in between the front and back layers. Georgette black suits, bedazzled spider embellishments, and faded t-shirts made the collection look like workwear rinsed in a cauldron. A somber color palette gave way to polka dots and bright yellow, followed by graphic co-ord sets of Neo Rauch’s paintings that perfectly conveyed that surrealist feeling. Tulle was everywhere; overlaying hoodies, as shoulder pads, and even crunched up as portraits from his first oil painting exhibition shown earlier this month, “They See More Than You Can See”.

The ambiance further enriched the theme, with broken and lit chandeliers on the cement floor, low-pitched cellos obfuscating the background, and gifted scarves with folklore illustrations upon our seats. With ‘Deep Mist’, Jun Takahashi devised an ingenious moment amongst an already innovative collection. Flooding our feeds on day two of fashion week, this show will go down in the books.

A bittersweet moment for fashion, this season Sarah Burton presented her last collection for Alexander McQueen. After three weeks of back-to-back shows, it’s hard to draw an emotional reaction from saturated guests; and yet. Kaia Gerber and Naomi Campbell’s appearances already sparked cheers, but it was nothing compared to the hollers and applauds that drowned the room when Burton herself (for the first time in what seemed like forever) did a full circuit of the runway. In a plain shirt and jeans that gave no indication of the magnificent collection that had just preceded her, the designer blew kisses and hugged longtime industry friends like journalist Sarah Mower, making for a deeply emotional grand finale. In her 26-year tenure with the brand (half working closely with McQueen and half as creative director), she has been persistent in honoring McQueen’s designs while reimagining womanhood from her perspective.

With ‘Anatomy II’, she delivered both a culmination and a retrospective of her work. On every seat, a departing note read “This collection is inspired by female anatomy, Queen Elizabeth I, the blood red rose and Magdalena Abakanowicz, a transgressive and powerfully creative artist who refused ever to compromise her vision. The show is dedicated to the memory of Lee Alexander McQueen, whose wish was always to empower women, and to the passion, talent and loyalty of my team.”

Kaia’s opening look set the tone, a corseted dress slashed with the first of many surgical cuts inspired by the ‘Hunger’ 1996 collection. Gold and silver embroidery substituted the violence and horror from the original pieces, instead celebrating the female body. Blood red, bone-white and black made up a very anatomical palette, all while referencing Britain and empowering women. Everything was a triple entendre; poppy flowers alluded to Tudor times, were printed in aquarelle graphics that degraded to blood stains, and became 3D dresses that petalled like vaginal folds. They were in shiny bustiers, sharply tailored mini dresses, and frilly embroideries on suits. The embrace of women’s bodies was also in the textiles printed with creations of Polish feminist artist Abakanowicz. Skeletons were reimagined in soft knitwear, where yarn bundled up as intestines and stitches and loops formed a feminine silhouette. Bones jutted out in the shape of sharp cutouts, tailoring flayed open with aggressive slashes as if it was skin or a reference to McQueen’s famed destruction of Saville Row tailoring.

The show was filled with symbolism in a way we’re accustomed to seeing from Burton, an exquisite end to a respected and historical chapter in the legacy label–and fashion. The show was a melancholic and beautiful moment in itself, making us grateful to have experienced her touch at McQueen in real-time.

Mugler

From the very beginning, Casey Cadwallader’s arrival at the Maison has stirred up a lot of drama: Thierry Mugler superfans desperate for a comeback of his Vegas-style spectacles, high-brow editors frowning upon the brand going commercial, and an unexpected fervor from the gen populous (his H&M collaboration sold out in 8 minutes). It makes sense then that with this collection he’s leaning into the newly-found mass media appeal and away from haughty fashion critics. “We’re kind of an emerging brand in a funny way”, he chuckled at the show’s preview.

The show still clung to the theatrics Mugler was famed for (maybe because of this), but he gave it a showbusiness spin. Cadwallader even included the one-hour delay and throngs outside that are surmised before a spectacle. His fear of being too ‘costumey’ now assuaged, the designs were inspired by his love of octopuses and jellyfish. Large fans and bright lights turned the stage into a very dramatic wind tunnel. And the cast? He gave it the star power usually reserved for a Broadway production. Celebrities and supermodels alike walked the show, earning whoops and delighted gasps as they walked. Paris Hilton, Angela Basset, Helena Christensen, and Aber Valletta walked alongside Irina Shayk, Kai Isaiah-Jamal, Paloma Elsesser, Adut Akech, and Alex Consani. Phones and smiles were just as high when jersey garments billowed as if underwater and body-con dresses had seven-meter-long chiffon trains rippling like tentacles. Signature spiral-cut jeans and corset jackets were patterned with polka-dots and ombré sprays inspired by sea slugs, while sequined sheer bodysuits glistened like fish scales. Those weren’t the only classic and archive pieces given the aquatic treatment: elegant coats inspired by the SS97 collection had fringes inspired by jellyfish, resin body plates became exoskeletons, and tulle sleeves and trousers gave the illusion of SS99’s ‘floating’ tailoring. The show delivered one of the biggest spectacles of the season and served as an identity reset, proving that the new, more commercial Mugler is successful– and not going anywhere.

Y PROJECT

After hosting a 6,000-person rave in Milan for the Diesel show, pressure and anticipation were high for Glenn Martens’ Y Project show. The standing-only room front row was crowded with the same young stylish people gathered outside the venue, making the inside look like superfans had sneaked past security and PR instead of invite-only. And with Martens’ reputation as fashion’s newest wunderkind, they might as well be crazed fanatics.

The collection was based on the fabric manipulation of denim, a material at this point synonymous with the Belgian designer. It was twisted, frayed, and saturated in fierce shades of lavender, yellow and red. They made up scrunched dresses, crumpled boots, and even hooded shawls. Denim became transformable and appropriate for every occasion, a concept some might remember him pushing since his earlier years. Although it began as a way to send the same look down the runway twice, this revolutionary concept is taking a firm hold on fashion now. From stacked trousers and scrunched-up bags to jackets zipped up to make a Y-shape, we won’t be surprised to see his innovative draping at Zara or Shein in a few months (unfortunately maybe days for the latter). This particular collection was inspired by the Gothic architecture of his hometown, Bruges. With it, he finally gave us an insight as to why he chooses denim: “In Bruges we have the tallest Medieval tower that’s made of bricks. It’s nice that the material they were using is basic bricks, unlike in England or France who were using ornate stone. The material that we use is very basic and archetypal, cotton and denim, but from them we create these constructive twists.” Even if the triad of models wearing fake serpent necklaces around their necks were the most talked about looks, it’s the cementing of the denim-is-fit-for-all revolution that made the show so significant.

Paco Rabanne

Paris Fashion Week marked design house Paco Rabanne’s return to the runway since the passing of the founder himself. Paco Rabanne passed away just last month, making this show a particularly emotional one, as this show honoured his work and contributions to the industry. Julien Dossena decided to pay homage to the late designer by focusing on his friendship with Salvador Dali. This meant that the show featured an array of dresses with Dali’s paintings printed on them as well as some of his extravagant jewellery. 

While this may make it seem like a collection that honoured Salvador Dali more than Paco Rabanne, this was not the case. The show was unapologetically Paco, the sparkling metallic chainmail looks that have become synonymous with the brand closed the show, accentuating the late designers continuing influence on the industry. The sparkling archival looks reminded us of Paco Rabanne’s innovative designs and trademark looks, leaving the audience with this as their final thoughts from the collection.

Acne Studios

Acne Studios took the distressed look to a whole new level in their mystical show. The enchanted forest set the stage for a collection that celebrated the natural world and particularly Jonny Johansson’s childhood in Sweden. The distressed wool and crochet knits played into this natural influence along with the neutral colour palette. The ultimate manifestation of this theme came to light in the various leaf-like dresses that took to the catwalk, bringing the Swedish forest to the runway.

These natural elements and the mystical set up created a jarring juxtaposition with the distressed, almost-apocalyptic looks. The combination of these elements served to create a natural and earthy aesthetic that was far removed from the highly technological looks that we have been seeing as of late. One interesting way that this came to light was through the use of the body as a canvas, which Johansson stated was “a way to make them become a window onto nature”.

Hodakova

Hodakova’s “Conventional Collection 112303” was inspired by a humble household object, the spoon. Whether they were covering bags, dresses or creating the cups on bralettes the kitchen utensils were everywhere. Inspired by the Swedish folktale Nail Soup that tells the story of a (you guessed it) soup made from a nail, the collection celebrated ingenuity. In addition to spoons, fabric spikes covered punk-inspired skirts and dresses in a nail-like fashion.

Some of the non-spoon related looks featured elaborate tulle, sheer fabrics and intricate silhouettes. There were examples of exceptional tailoring as sleek suits took to the runway. And finally, the collection, of course, did not come without HODAKOVA’s signature buckle bags that have taken the fashion world by storm. 

Rick Owens

Rick Owens is known for the outrageous; this collection was no exception. From metallic pink puffers to sleek waist high leg slits, we saw it all in what can only be described as a maximalists’ dream. Each model took to the runway in sky-high platform boots that sagged around the leg in the way a loose-fitted trouser would; a shoe that we believe will be everywhere this Autumn/Winter. The predominantly black collection heavily played with textures and proportions creating extravagant silhouettes and shapes in the absence of colour.

While most of the looks were black, Owens injected some colour through the metallic pink and green looks in the collection that were anything but subtle. Refusing to sacrifice the playful and experimental aspects of these looks in the pursuit of colour, Rick Owens just decided to do it all. The pink sequin donut-like garments stole the show, and we cannot wait to see which celebrity is brave enough to wear one of these looks on the red carpet.

Coperni

Coperni, always the master of a viral moment. The designer that brought us the iconic spray on dress, a moment that won Bella Hadid Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards, has created yet another talkable moment. The show was inspired by Jean de la Fontaine’s fable ‘The Wolf and the Lamb’ fable, Coperni’s Instagram explained:

“Unlike the original fable written in the 17th century, which raises questions relating to the balance of power between the human groups that make up society, Coperni reinterprets the story and transposes it to the year of 2023 with a positive vision of the future.
The show presents Coperni’s vision which is that there is neither a dominant nor a dominated, but that mankind and machine can live in harmony.”

This inspiration was visible in the designs through the painted landscapes on jackets and the white fluffy pieces that likened the models to sheep. All in all, the collection placed a modern and urban twist on the pastoral tale. 

Even though the show featured models such as Adut Akech and Lila Moss, the star of the show was none other than Spot (or multiple Spots) the robotic dog. The Boston Dynamics robots took to the runway as aids in the storytelling, but they soon stole the show as one Spot interacted with model Rianne Van Rompaey. This particular Spot had an elongated robotic arm (or neck) that allowed the two to lock eyes before Spot began to undress the model, removing the thick blanket that wrapped around her shoulders and handing it back to her.

While critics may argue that this show along with the last were dependant on gimmicks, more concerned with going viral on social media than the clothes at hand, we feel that these moments at shows are integral in Coperni’s exploration of technology within both fashion and modern life. As Coperni said that this was a more relaxed moment following on from the magic of their spray on dress last season, we are very excited to see what they do next.

Ester Manas

Inspired by her upcoming wedding to Balthazar Delepierre, Ester Manas created a collection for the cool bride. The show took place in a church and was soundtracked by some of the most universally recognised love songs, a route that the couple will not be taking at their own wedding. The looks, however, were entirely non-traditional and non-conforming.

From two pieces to completely sheer gowns, these dresses were for the ‘it’ brides only. The diverse display of models seemed like the brides that you would be begging for a hen party invite from and you bet that we would be wearing one of the less bridal looks from the collection if we managed to bag an invite.

Valentino

If you’re going to take one thing away from the Valentino show, let it be this: Go and buy a tie. Ties have been popping up in the fashion girls’ wardrobes for a hot minute now, but they are about to experience the Pierpaolo Piccioli effect. The collection, aptly named ‘Black Tie’, utilised the accessory on every look in some capacity. Some were styled classically, with the black tie set against a white shirt under a blazer while others were dresses with faux shirt collars and ‘ties’ that connected to the dress’ bodice. Whether a conventional depiction of the tie or not, this collection singlehandedly proved the versatility of the accessory that has often been associated with the constraints of a work or school uniform. So, go buy a tie.

Zimmermann

19^th-Century Australian artist Rupert Bunny left Melbourne and settled in Paris when he married Jeanne Morel, a journey not dissimilar to Zimmermann’s. The Australian fashion house held its second show in Paris this season and drew on Bunny’s art as inspiration. The collection worked with the National Gallery of Victoria to incorporate the painter’s works into the looks through delicate prints and a romantic colour palette. Nicky Zimmermann explained: 

“For Fall I was inspired by the artwork of Rupert Bunny, an Australian artist from the turn of the last century. I was drawn to his use of colour and the romanticism of his work – the gentle and dreamy lifestyle scenes. There is a glow, warmth and optimism to his work that is really appealing to me.”

However, this is not where the melding of French and Australian fashion ends. The usual romantic eveningwear was prominent throughout the collection; however, this season featured a surprising guest, the humble denim jean. The delicate lace and florals that we are used to seeing from the design house were paired with loose fitting jeans in the perfect blending of the relaxed style we see in Australia and the romanticism of France. This collection served as a map of Zimmermann’s history as it honoured both its origin and current destination in one fell swoop.

A return to the skinny brow is always met with controversy, particularly after the victims of the last hype attempted to thicken their eyebrows to acclimate to the thick brow trend. However, Vivienne Westwood is proving you don’t have to tweeze to get the look, a little bit of concealer and an eyebrow pencil can give you the defined, french flapper brow.

Bald Heads At YZY

Kanye has been very controversial this season for many reasons… which we won’t go into right now. Still, his futuristic brand YZY has roped in with the intergalactic beauty we’ve been getting on the runway this fall. Bald heads, usually worn alongside no eyebrows or makeup, were sported down the runway. The makeup artist behind the domes is of course the always cool Isamaya FFrench, and we’ll be interested to see if we get more bald heads as the seasons go on.

Decadent Beauty At SCHIAPARELLI

The models at Schiaparelli SS23 donned decadent beauty down the runway signalling the return to old Hollywood beauty we’ve seen crop up this season. Bold lips in intense reds, lined lips, light but refined eyeliner… all perfect with the gold accents that are equally as popular this season.

Lined Lips At Rui

The good people down at Rui decided to go for a rawer, less refined beauty direction this season. Bluntly lined dark lips with no lipstick, a classic 90s throwback, were extremely popular here and at a few others in Paris and matched the raw glamour trend well as an easy way to dress up a simple beauty look.

Untouched Beauty At Awake Mode

Perhaps the most notable trend this year is the fresh-face glamour we’ve been seeing everywhere from London to Paris to Milan. Perfect, glowing skin was seen across runways, and we’re sure this trend will continue into the winter.

Intense Liner At Lous Vuitton

Julia fox era eyeliner is here to stay! intense eye looks weren’t as popular in Paris compared to the other fashion weeks, but they certainly had their moment. Models at Louis Vuitton wore thick eyeliner looks that ended in a cat eye, perhaps another sign of our return to old Hollywood inspired looks.

Scene hair at Junya Watanabe

After the whispers of raccoon hair, we knew a scene resurgence was on our hands, and this season it’s nowhere as obvious as Junya Watanabe. Spiked-up dyed hair with intense side partings sweeping across the eye were all spotted on the models at the SS23 shows and we can say with almost complete certainty that the side parting is in again.

Side partings are back in a big way (sorry Gen Z) and we’re just glad we’re here to witness it. Models at Courreges strutted down the runway in the controversial style and looked effortlessly cool and glam, could this be the biggest hair shift of the year?

Sweating Glitter at Anne Isabella

Glitter has made quite a name for itself over the past two years, and that shows absolutely no sign of stopping as we enter the new season. Models at Anna Isabella walked the runway with shifting highlights generously placed around their eyes and nose – that’s certainly one way to stand out this fall!

Androgenous Cuts At The Row

We knew suits regardless of gender is officially in, but from the scenes at The Row, so are androgynous cuts! Models walked Mary Kate and Ashley’s runway in jaw-enhancing cuts, and proved that a masculine haircut can still be extremely glam and effeminate with the right styling.

Dark Glitter Eyes At Dries Van Noten

As we’ve mentioned, glitter is back, but you don’t need to douse yourself in it to accomplish the look. The models at Dries Van Noten walked the SS23 catwalk with oily, sparkly eyeshadows in blues and yellows and had a far grungier look than what we are used to.

Raw Beauty At Cecilie Bahnsen

It wouldn’t be Paris fashion week without models with perfect skin absolutely glowing down a runway with what seems like only a little bit of chapstick on. The natural glam look has been making waves recently, and the youthful look was spotted most notably at Cecile Bahsen.

Waves at Acne Studios

Beach ready waves were seen across Acne Studios SS23 show, from long beachy waves to short, bleached waves. The style was genderless, and definitely gave off a devil-may-care vibe. After all, you never want to seem like you’re trying too hard in Paris.

Oil Slick Hair

Gold Features at Balmain

Balmains hair and beauty were understated this season, in favour of gold features which set them apart from the other shows. Gold piercings were seen from start to finish, with models glowing slightly as they caught the light. This is definitely an edgier alternative to the gold trend we’ve been seeing pop up recently, and you don’t even need to have your nose pierced to accomplish it.

Big Hair At Rocha

Big hair is back (was it ever really gone). 80’s crimped hair pinned to the side or worn loosely was quite the spectacle at Rochas Paris fashion week show, and contrasted beautifully against the elegant gowns. Bold, berry lips were also on trend – as they were at Milan Fashion week – so make sure to find your old MAC lip from your Tumblr days.

The winner of the last Karl Lagerfeld Prize awarded at the eighth edition of the LVMH Prize for young fashion designersthe South African designer Lukhanyo Mdingi opened the dance of Paris Fashion Week. Lukhanyo Mdingi is part of the new wave of African Talent bringing the continent to the forefront of fashion. His new Spring Summer Collection“BURKINA” offers a reinterpretation of Burkinabe prints and a celebration of West African fashion.

Kidill

Japanese designer Hiroaki Sueyasu Collection “Hell Haus”featured Contemporary fashion and streetwear in a post-apocalyptic, psychedelic setting with models walking like zombies or lying on the floor. The show was inspired by horror movies, the punk era, and skate culture. The designer who became known as a celebrated outsider artist has a tendency to depict idyllic, flowered landscapes in fantastical, sometimes horrific imagery. In this collection, in collaboration with Tom Tosseyn and Ritual Projects Paris, Hiroaki Sueyasu displayed Japanese dyeing techniques used in knits and woven. 

BlueMarble

Paris-based designer Anthony Alvarez founded BlueMarble in 2018. Inspired by urban cultures, subcultures, and the MTV generation, the designer creates ultra-coloured pieces with psychedelic prints and vintage charm, like his show last season, where he took inspiration from New York frenzy and Filipino heat. Anthony Alvarez looked at different wardrobes, from workwear to sportswear, streetwear, and tailoring to create this SS collection, while embedding neon colours, strass, and animal prints, with artisanal details. The fashion brand seduced international artists such as Justine Bieber and rapper Kodak Black present at the show.

Airei

LVMH Prize 2022 Semi-Finalist, Drew Curry presented his second collection at Paris Fashion Week. The show was quite surprising, it took place in a dormitory setting with pieces hanging from the ceiling and did not include models. The designer revealed a collection made of neutral colors ranging from beige, ochre, and grey, featuring linen and knitweargarments with striking contrasts and fine thread-work. Curry artfully crafts yarns, such as Italian recycled cashmere, and fabrics, like Japanese denim.

Taak 

The Japanese brand TAAKK created in 2013 by Takuya Morikawa, who notably made his mark for eight years at Issey Miyake, returned for Paris Fashion Week yesterday. 

For his second Parisian outing, Takuya Morikawa, who is passionate about the surrealist movement, was inspired by his dreams, the intersection of reality and unreality, and with it, the ambiguity of this intersection. Proposing a collection that mixed fluidity, denim, and bright colours.

Egonlab 

Egonlab has been causing a stir since its launch in 2018 and is establishing itself as one of the most promising talents on the Parisian creative scene. The fashion brand is led by Kévin Nompeix and Florentin Glémarec The collection broke the codes of gender – a recurring theme in the duo’s work – with worn denim, colourful oversized suits, and leather pieces. What really caught the eye, apart from the platform waders and the cartoon characters present at this Alice in Wonderland-inspired show, was a small accessory discreetly attached to the ears of some of the models. A metal cigarette holder that is worn as ear jewellery. A piece that was unanimously approved by the guests at the fashion show and that we are likely to see everywhere very soon…

Etudes 

Founded in 2012 by 2 friends Aurélien and Jérémie, the urban fashion brand highlights art and subcultures through its clothing. The Parisian brand Études Studio continues to seduce the fashion world. Both passionate about graffiti, they offer a vision of fashion that reflects our era, where the boundaries between different artistic fields are becoming increasingly blurred..

The show took place on a disused railway track, with the models walking in the middle of the wild grass. The urban and comfortable style of this collection of men’s clothing features bold designs and loose-fitting cuts.

As Paris Fashion Week draws to a close, Voir has your final rundown of unforgettable shows.

Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney is the pioneer of ethical fashion, her designs repeatedly remind us that neglecting leather and fur doesn’t mean leaving behind quality and style. Her FW22 show (set in an ultra-modern Parisian dome) created silky skirts, denim flight suits and fluffy trench coats in a colour palette of pastel tones. The designer made use of fluid shapes and negative space to create an artistic and lively, yet wearable collection.

To create the collection, McCartney worked with artist Frank Stella, using his work as inspiration. The parallels between Stella’s work and McCartney’s designs are evident in her use of abstract prints in a minimalist meets maximalist style. On working with the artist, Stella admitted to Vogue it was “scary because he has incredibly good taste”. Despite this, the two came together to create an amalgamation of artsy prints and high fashion silhouettes.

Louis Vuitton

With more prints and patterns than imaginable, Nicolas Ghesquiere captured the beauty and culture of Paris through an old money inspired FW22 collection showcased at the Musee d’Orsay. Moving away from the strict gender codes that once held a tight grip over the fashion industry, Louis Vuitton’s newest collection saw women in traditional menswear from ties to pinstripe pants.

The collection blurred the lines between streetwear and couture silhouettes as loose-fitting sweaters were placed over flaring maxi skirts in floral prints. Playing on the trending old-money style garments, collared sweaters synonymous with vintage golf wear were paired with pocketed dungaree dresses. The quaint collection complemented the romantic marble setting.

The show’s audience was filled with the fashion house’s muses. Sarah Paulson and Emma Chamberlain sat in the front row, a prime spot to watch Squid Game’s HoYeon Jung open the show in a brunette boxy jacket.

Givenchy

Since becoming creative director of Givenchy, Matthew Williams has turned the house into a pioneer of alternative modern fashion by blending key house codes like feminine elegance with fashion-forward flair.

For his FW22 collection, Williams brought nostalgic noughties grunge back to the forefront. Baggy band tees, tight-fitting tanks, and leather boots transported us to the days of Nirvana- fever as fierce models stormed the runway to futuristic beats.

While the collection was fun and light-hearted, the fashion house did not fail to pay their respects to those currently suffering in Ukraine; Givenchy sent both blue and yellow looks between the emo wear to show solidarity with the war-torn country.

Schiaparelli

Schiaparelli took their legendary surrealist designs to new heights with a vintage horror-inspired FW22 collection. Claws, cone bras, and torso shaped purses each featured in a black and white filter- looking back to Elsa Schiaparelli’s phantasmagorical accessories (like the telephone shaped handbag) for inspiration.

Daniel Roseberry also drew inspiration from gothic cult movies, like Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands, as model Mila Vaneeten was accessorised with knives posing as gloves. The model’s gleaming smiles contrasted the moody garments as Rouguy posed in a monochromatic black look featuring iconic cones, studs, and swirls that the brand has become known for.

Akris

Drawing inspiration from Reinhard Voigt’s artwork, squares and geometric patterns dominated Akris’ FW22 collection. Incorporating pixellated prints onto trenchcoats and blazers, the garments were vibrant and futuristic. Creating an optical illusion through abstract prints, designer Albert Kriemler brought navy and grey looks to Paris Fashion Week.

Even the show’s setting fit the square trend as models stormed a light and open square-based building designed by Kriemler’s long time friend Sou Fujimoto.

Giambattista Valli

Capturing the fierce street style of Parisian women, Italian designer Giambattista Valli looked to vintage French street style to create an elegant day and nightwear collection. Floral gowns, leopard print blazers, and frothy frills came together to create an eclectic mix of textures encapsulating the highlights of a 1960s wardrobe.

Incorporating abstract accessories into the collection, dangerously chunky heels, oversized bows, and upside-down sunglasses played to an OTT representation of day-to-day Parisian attire. Speaking about the show to Vogue, the designer admitted the collection took a swift turnaround in response to the Ukrainian crisis. Valli wanted his designs to symbolise hope amongst the turbulence of the times- a goal he achieved through fun-loving florals and bright pastel designs.

Chanel

Since the days of Coco, tweed has served as Chanel’s staple material. As an ode to the brand’s history, Chanel’s current creative director (Virginie Viard) incorporated the material onto traditional skirt suits, dresses, and blazers. The show was a glamorous exploration of Chanel’s ‘eternal house code’.

The checked fabric featured in a wide range of shades and designs. Bright red suits and sage green wellingtons reminisced nostalgic royal attire while tweed mini dresses were a nod to England in the 1960s. The British influence on Chanel has been apparent since the label’s initiator (Gabrielle Coco Chanel) had a love affair with The Duke of Westminster. Since then the French fashion house has taken in inspiration from our practical wellingtons to cosy cardigans; this collection shows the tight relationship between English dressing and Chanel isn’t set to stop anytime soon!

Miu Miu

After the success of their SS22 pleated mini-skirt worn by icons from Hailey Bieber to Nicole Kidman, Miu Miu continued their ultra-mini legacy with tiny skirts and even tinier shorts in a minuscule length. Keeping to a clean and modern aesthetic, the creative director of Miu Miu (Fabio Zambernardi) perched white scarfs around model’s necks while knee-high socks threw us back to vintage Wimbledon matches. The most jaw-dropping look from the FW22 collection was donned by supermodel Adut Akech who charged the runway a sequined see-through two-piece paired with high-rise socks and sturdy black pumps.
