DSQUARED2 celebrated their 30^th anniversary last night by turning the runway into a New York club scene, even including a gathered crowd outside, for the ultimate birthday bash. 

The runway was graced by famous faces in leu of their 30^th anniversary. The stars that featured were Alex Consani, Irina Shayk, Isabeli Fontana, Tyson Beckford, and of course iconic supermodel Naomi Campbell closing the show, and not forgetting a special performance from JT at the end.

Doechii kicked off the show as she pulled up in a military-style vehicle exiting with dollar bills and in an army inspired look; wearing denim booty shorts, an oversized chunky brown belt, and a green corseted jacket, she stormed the runway along with a makeshift cigarette packet fixed to her sleeve which she pulled a cigarette out of.

Born in Canada, Made in Italy, is the founding brothers, Dean & Dan Caten’s slogan but it’s clear their inspiration was drawn from America as we saw Western cowboy tropes, biker leather and an abundance of New York City references including the classic yellow taxis and NYPD cars. 

Dean and Dan unveiled heavy duty denim, studded leather jackets, fur trims, a whole lot of army green, plus the return of DSQUARED2’s iconic Skate Boot. Cowboy references ran deep as the audience saw a heavy nod towards the trend that’s been so prominent over the past year and clearly on its way to making a return this autumn. Brought to life by the models strutting in cowboy boots with silver accents, leather chaps and jackets, flannel shirts and neckties, and not forgetting the most important accessory – the cowboy hat (and a belt here and there) to bring the looks together.

Renderings of leather and denim played a significant role in DSQUARED2’s show, seen as both gilets, bottoms, and everything in between, and most importantly Naomi Campbell’s whole ensemble including thigh high leather boots for the finale. This along with a few baker boy caps dotted throughout gave a nod to a sort of 1930s American pluck.

DSQUARED2 didn’t forget about America’s punk-rock era with nods towards the band KISS in both the makeup and the clothing which included their logo as the show started to draw to a close. We also got a bit of 70s disco thrown into the mix with neon catsuits, jewelled disco ball dresses, a multi-colour sequin tank, and a roller skater in a fishnet vest with a bedazzled denim jacket performing jaw dropping tricks on the runway.

To finish the show off, the DSQUARED2 brothers pulled up in an NYPD cop car and were walked down the runway in handcuffs by a police officer. Arrested for that bombshell of a show? We should hope so.

Marc Jacobs 

Although not on the official calendar, Marc Jacobs kicked off New York Fashion Week three days early with a whimsical six-minute presentation at the New York Public Library. Titled Courage, the show celebrated bold self-expression and resilience in the face of uncertainty.

Jacobs showcased exaggerated silhouettes that blurred the lines between fantasy and fashion. Bubble skirts, puffy shoulders, oversized bows, and circus-worthy XXL toe pumps dominated the runway, evoking a doll-like aesthetic. Models moved with a childlike playfulness, accentuated by Pat McGrath’s ingenious beauty details, stick-on glittery beauty spots, red velvet circles, and sparkling lip embellishments. These touches referenced traditional notions of beauty while adding a playful abstraction.

The designer used the show to reflect on themes of creativity and vulnerability. “Fear is not my enemy, it is a necessary companion to creativity,” Jacobs noted in his show’s programme. This sentiment translated into the collection’s theatrical proportions and daring designs.

Among the audience were notable figures, including Sofia Coppola, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Jenna Lyons, seated in a single row that heightened the intimacy of the event. The finale saw Alex Consani strutting in a dramatic red gown and black XXL pumps, closing the show with a confident flourish. Once again, Jacobs proved that courage fuels imagination and pushes boundaries in fashion.

Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano’s collection was a high-octane fusion of futurism, technology, and Hollywood glamour, hosted in Chelsea, New York, on the 6^thof February, the official first day of New York Fashion Week. The runway, featuring a red and black Toyota as a centrepiece, was transformed into a theatre of innovation. Siriano drew inspiration from the curves and lines of automobiles, translating them into striking silhouettes that redefined red carpet style. “The lines of a car to me look like the lines of a corset,” Siriano explained, encapsulating the harmony between structure and elegance in his designs.

Models strutted past rose beds in structured gowns and tailored suits, with red hues dominating the collection to symbolise power, love, and anger. “I was thinking of that iconic red car that you grew up loving,” Siriano shared, alluding to the emotional impact of the colour red. For Siriano, red is more than just a bold aesthetic choice; it’s a symbol of passion and intensity, perfectly mirroring the dynamic tension of the automotive world. The designs showcased creative references to automotive aesthetics, including latex-like fabrics resembling oil slicks, tyre track embroidery, and jersey dresses nodding to car interiors. Standout looks included a one-shouldered red tulle gown worn by Winnie Harlow and a blue cocooned mini dress that exuded modern edge.

The star-studded front row featured Katie Holmes, Whoopi Goldberg, Laverne Cox, Tiffany Haddish, and Bronwyn Newport who applauded Siriano’s bold approach to gender fluidity. Male models took to the runway in cropped jackets and wide-leg trousers, highlighting Siriano’s ongoing dedication to inclusivity. As Siriano put it, “Fashion is for everyone, no matter your shape, size, or gender.”

Closing with ethereal violin melodies, models posed in corseted eveningwear by the Toyota, delivering a dramatic crescendo to the event. Siriano’s innovative designs proved that the future of fashion is fearless, glamorous, and inclusive.

Calvin Klein Collection 

Veronica Leoni’s debut for Calvin Klein at New York Fashion Week on February 7th was one of the most anticipated moments of the season, marking the brand’s return to the runway after six years. The first female creative director at Calvin Klein, Leoni brought a fresh approach to the brand’s minimalist legacy, creating a “24/7 wardrobe” that blended modern tailoring with sensuality. The collection featured sleek silhouettes, sharp tailoring, and luxurious fabrics inspired by the Calvin Klein archive. “I really tried to connect with his original energy, and we really tried to explore a 24/7 wardrobe, to give it a cinematic and a real reality” stated Leoni. Key pieces included dramatic wool coats, organza fur outerwear, and tactile textiles that added depth to the minimalist palette of blacks, greys, and off-whites.

Leoni’s designs, while modern and chic, also drew on her experiences at brands like Jil Sander and Céline, offering everyday essentials with a twist. The collection featured essentials like tailored suits, trench coats, and soft, draped jersey dresses, while retaining an air of subversive sensuality. Celebrities such as Kate Moss and Christy Turlington, Cooper Koch, as well as Calvin Klein himself, attended the intimate show. Leoni described her collection as an exploration of confidence rather than overt sex appeal, emphasising the power of simplicity and modern elegance. The show marked a bold new chapter for Calvin Klein, combining heritage with a distinctly contemporary edge. 

Campillo 

Patricio Campillo’s collection made a bold statement, drawing from his rich Mexican heritage and a personal exploration of gender fluidity and magical realism. Inspired by surrealist painter Remedios Varo, the collection blended charro tailoring with subverted gender norms, resulting in a striking mix of masculinity and femininity. 

Campillo, a self-taught designer, focused on handcrafted textile manipulation, creating unique silhouettes that ranged from sensual and sharp to romantic and ethereal. He experimented with traditional menswear forms, such as cummerbunds transformed into corsets and trousers reimagined as skirts, showcasing his ability to challenge and redefine conventions. As Campillo himself put it, “I see this collection as an exploration of my reality as a queer Mexican designer,” which speaks to his deeply personal approach to challenging and redefining traditional menswear.

The collection’s most dramatic final piece, a jacket adorned with over 2,500 rooster feathers, was a nod to the designer’s love for fantastical elements. Campillo’s craftsmanship was evident in every detail, from the hand-stitched creases in his suits to the innovative draping techniques. His approach to design was undeniably influenced by his queer Mexican identity, as well as his desire to challenge stereotypes of Mexican culture. The presence of Bad Bunny, a key cultural icon, in the front row further amplified the collection’s relevance, while Bernie Martinez Ocasio, Bad Bunny’s brother, made a powerful statement as one of the models, adding familial depth to the show’s impact. Campillo’s collection successfully merged artistic ambition with technical skill, establishing him as a visionary in redefining contemporary menswear.

 Kim Shui 

Kim Shui’s runway show, held in the Upper East Side, redefined sensuality and restraint with a collection that merged bold textures, cultural symbols, and a gender-fluid approach to fashion. Drawing inspiration from Italian artist Monica Bonvicini’s leather belt artwork, Shui reimagined the material in new forms, deconstructing pleather into fringes, laser-cut details, and shredded textures. This transformation aimed to challenge pleather’s traditional associations with dominance and toughness, creating a striking contrast with its tactile, sensual appeal.

Shui’s design narrative explored themes of power, autonomy, and agency, highlighting the fluidity between masculinity and femininity. Cultural contrasts were central, with the fusion of Western influences such as cowboy hats and bolo ties alongside traditional Chinese motifs, including Qipao collars and frog closures. These details symbolised Shui’s ability to merge her Chinese heritage with Western sensibilities, creating a distinct, boundary-pushing aesthetic.

Among the guests were rapper Joey Bada$$ and his girlfriend, actress Serayah, who graced the chic front row. Orange Is the New Black star Dascha Polanco and Love Island alum Leah being also in attendance, further elevating the star-studded atmosphere. Artist and musician SAINt JHN was seen soaking in the show, underscoring the intersection of music and fashion at this high-profile event.

Throughout the 43-look collection, Shui’s exploration of the snake symbol, a representation of renewal and rebirth, was evident, with snakeskin prints and serpentine motifs woven into structured gowns and tailored trousers. The inclusion of provocative accessories, like the butt-shaped pleather bags, further reinforced Shui’s desire to challenge societal norms and perceptions of gender, identity, and power in fashion.  “It’s less about following boundaries and more about removing them” stated Shui. This collection marks a significant evolution in Shui’s career, where sensuality, control, and cultural juxtaposition seamlessly converged.

 Anna Sui 

Anna Sui transported New York Fashion Week audiences into a world of eccentric glamour with her Fall/Winter 2025 collection, drawing inspiration from 1930s screwball comedies and the lavish lifestyles of American heiresses. With muses like Barbara Hutton, Doris Duke, and Peggy Guggenheim, the collection reimagined their opulent, uninhibited wardrobes for the modern era.

Set in the elegant National Arts Club, the show opened with Rita Hayworth’s “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” perfectly setting the tone for a lineup rich in vintage charm and playful decadence. Models strutted down the runway draped in faux-mink coats, pleated lamé dresses, and leopard-print shoes, a direct nod to Bringing Up Baby’s iconic pet leopard. Layering played a crucial role in Sui’s signature styling, as tweeds, lace, brocade, and Fair Isle knits clashed harmoniously, accessorised with estate-style jewellery and Peggy Guggenheim inspired sunglasses.

“I styled these looks much the way I see young people incorporating vintage finds into their personal wardrobes,” Sui explained. “Nothing head-to-toe, just a mix of trophy pieces.”

The collection felt like a love letter to fashion’s past, infused with a sense of escapism that resonated deeply with today’s desire for individuality and self-expression.

LaPointe 

On Super Bowl Sunday, Sally LaPointe’s collection was a testament to endurance, both in theme and execution. Marking 15 years in the industry, the designer leaned into her signature aesthetic bold, vibrant, and unapologetically glamorous, while weaving in a sports-inspired narrative. The runway, set against the unexpected backdrop of the National Basketball Players Association, was charged with energy, kicked off by a dynamic performance from Supa Girlz. This choice of venue and entertainment reinforced LaPointe’s emphasis on agility and perseverance, concepts mirrored in the structure and movement of her designs.

The collection showcased LaPointe’s signature monochromatic styling, with an electrifying palette that included acidy green, hot pink, and deep cognac red. Statement outerwear dominated the runway, featuring plush fur, leopard calf, vinyl, and organza. Feathers, sequins, and crystal embellishments added drama, ensuring each look was ready for the spotlight. Standout pieces included feather-adorned chaps, stretch sequin bodysuits, and georgette caped jackets. Accessories, such as crystallised basketball handbags, tied the collection seamlessly to its theme. “I got to have fun with this collection,” LaPointe said, and that playful energy was perfectly reflected in her show. 

With a star-studded front row, including Law Roach, Kris Jenner, Jordyn Woods, and singer Monica, the show reaffirmed LaPointe’s ability to blend high fashion with high-energy spectacle. More than a collection, it was a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the designer’s unwavering vision. 

Elena Velez 

Elena Velez transported her audience into a dark, immersive maritime world with her New York Fashion Week collection, Leech. Hosted at Artechouse, the presentation blurred the lines between fashion and digital art, as guests descended into a former boiler room transformed into a deep-sea dreamscape. Silhouettes of lighthouses and ghostly ships loomed on the walls, while ocean waves lapped against the soundscape. This wasn’t merely a runway show, it was a theatrical descent into the mythology of womanhood, shaped by Velez’s fascination with contentious female archetypes.

Velez’s designs embodied the essence of the siren, the sailor, and the seductress. Netting, leather, and latex-dipped fabrics mimicked the look of garments drenched at sea, while ropes and metal hardware reinforced the maritime theme. Standout pieces included a black strapless mini dress with white ruffle detailing that evoked seafoam, and pirate-style paper-bag trousers that hinted at a rebellious spirit. The show also reflected Velez’s own narrative her mother, a ship captain, has long influenced her work.

“No plan B I’ll sink with my ship,” Velez declared, reinforcing her uncompromising vision. With Leech, she embraced the antihero, crafting a collection that challenged stereotypes and cemented her place as fashion’s renegade.

New York Fashion Week 2025 proved once again that the city remains a powerhouse of creativity, reinvention, and boundary-pushing artistry. From Marc Jacobs’ whimsical theatricality to Christian Siriano’s futuristic glamour and Veronica Leoni’s refined minimalism at Calvin Klein, each designer brought a unique perspective to the runway. Patricio Campillo and Kim Shui challenged conventions through cultural and gender-fluid storytelling, while Anna Sui’s nostalgic glamour and Elena Velez’s dark maritime fantasy showcased the transformative power of fashion. As the week came to a close, one thing was clear, New York remains a stage where designers dare to dream, redefine tradition, and set the tone for the future of fashion.

Christian Cowen: A Modern Whodunnit

Christian Cowan’s Spring 2025 Ready-to-Wear collection was a showstopper at New York Fashion Week, bringing his signature flair for drama, fun, and unapologetic glamour to the runway. Known for dressing pop icons like Lady Gaga and Cardi B, Cowan once again delivered a collection that was all about bold, eye-catching pieces designed for those who love to make a statement. The collection was a murder mystery-meets-Carrie Bradshaw affair, inspired by the horrors and whodunnits Cowan had watched, with the models sporting a flapper-style, black bob haircut and 1920’s inspired makeup with thin brows and brow-bone highlight. Cowan opted for black, silver, and cobalt blue palette, showcasing some powerhouse tailoring and creativity with different materials and cutouts.

Standout Looks: Looking at Cowan’s flare for tailoring, one of the standout looks offered a black, satin, 3-piece suit, consisting of a long-line blazer with exaggerated white cuffs, straight-leg trousers, and a lacey, micro-bralette – adding a touch of the feminine to an otherwise masculine ensemble. Another look we saw grace the runway was a satin, cobalt suit, with a cravat and metal rose fastening the suit – a detail that Cowan himself chose to wear during his appearance at the end of the show.

Coach: A Playful Tribute To Classic America

For Spring 2025, Coach creative director Stuart Vevers delivered a collection that beautifully blended the brand’s heritage with a fresh, modern twist. The show was a celebration of classic Americana, presented with a playful and youthful edge that has become synonymous with Vevers’ tenure at the iconic American fashion house. Staged against the backdrop of a sunny day in New York City, the collection evoked a sense of optimism, freedom, and casual cool. Vevers took inspiration from Coach’s roots, reimagining vintage Americana through a contemporary lens. The collection drew on the codes of American sportswear—denim, leather, and varsity jackets—infused with a youthful spirit and a hint of nostalgia. The designs played with proportion and layering, mixing oversized silhouettes with more tailored pieces to create a dynamic and versatile wardrobe. Vevers continued his exploration of diverse textures and materials, blending traditional fabrics with unexpected finishes. The collection featured an array of materials, from soft knits and lightweight cottons to luxe leathers and denims, all contributing to the tactile appeal of the pieces. This mix of textures created a sense of depth and richness that felt both elevated and approachable.

Standout Looks: One of materials we saw frequently used in the Coach show was brown leather, an ode to the 1940’s US army uniform. The utilitarian look cropped up throughout the runway, seen in jackets, skirts, trousers, and blazers. Even the classic aviator-style jacket was seen, paired with a satin, brown dress. Again, with a strong reference of Americana, we saw denim flood the Coach show, with classic denim jackets, high-cut jeans, even paired together in a y2k-inspired double denim look!

Brandon Maxwell: A Redefined Exploration Of Femininity And Modernity

Brandon Maxwell’s Spring 2025 Ready-to-Wear collection, showcased at New York Fashion Week, was a masterclass in understated elegance and modern sophistication. Pops Of Red

One trend we’ve been seeing everywhere for the last few months is the pops of red, or full monochromatic red looks. We’ve loved seeing this on runway but seeing it from a street style point of view is even more special. Seeing how people fit it into their own personal style and make it work in a non-commercial way is so much more genuine.

Bonnets and Balaclavas have been in the fashion world for a while now, and while the rise of the trend was totally unpredictable, the origin could be traced back to Dior’s cruise collection in 2022 in which several of the looks came with matching bonnets. Altuzarra Ready To Wear FW Collection – Mix And Match Prints

Altuzarra’s Ready-to-Wear FW Collection made a bold statement on the runway with its masterful mix-and-match print moments, embracing a vibrant narrative of patterns. The juxtaposition of fiery reds and yellows with more subdued earthy tones creates visual tension, showcasing Altuzarra’s print mixing ability. 

One of the looks is a dress consisting of stripes against a flowery explosion, playing with the concepts of order and chaos. The fluidity of the skirt’s print softens the top’s dramatic stripes, resulting in an ensemble that is both a piece of art and a fashion statement. 

Another look is a jumpsuit with a coherent blend of organic and geometric elements. The pattern change does not disrupt the flow of the garment, demonstrating how clashing prints may work together to produce a single, flowing piece that is both dynamic and elegant. 

Although Altuzarra’s collection was generally more casual ready to wear looks, these garments were the highlight of the show. the vibrant exploration of print on print demonstrates the combination of unexpected patterns to create outfits that are both unique and unforgettable.

The newest PUMA AW24 collection revolved around the resurrected iconic Mostro – the refashioned 1999 sneaker acting as an inspiration for the whole set of outfits. Mostro found itself recreated in multiple forms, from more traditional, white-yellow-blue ones, with strap closures, to the more avant-garde – spiky, metallic, made of purple mesh, or ankle-length and khaki-coloured to match a military outfit. Regardless of whether we’re talking of the neon-yellow-spiked sneakers or the silver nylon Mostro boots, the shoes were by no means a mere accessory. They were the axis around which the show revolved.

Inspired by the futuristic, alien-like form of the spiky sneakers, Desens and McKimm’s collection was based on mostly metallic colours, nylon, vegan leather, and all fabrics shiny. What dominated was the varied, oversized tracksuit sets – some glittering with diamonds, some spaceship-like-silver and metallic, some made of vegan leather, and some sewn out of irresistibly soft, black velvet.

We also marvelled at leather and red velvet bodysuits, balaclavas, cargo trousers, and windbreaker-inspired, full-length dresses. The wow effect soared thanks to the accessories, including unconventionally shaped, futuristic sunglasses, matching gloves, and cosmic sports bags. The last outfit was the cherry on the Mostro delicious cake, with its white nylon catsuit and diamond-encrusted motorbike helmet.

It wasn’t just the magic outfits that created the mysterious, other-worldly atmosphere – just look at the stunning makeup done by Isamaya Ffrench! Though basic at first glance, at a closer look you spot the elf-like, pointed fake ears and the glistering black horns attached to models’ foreheads. Could we be more obsessed with those looks?

The show space added to the dynamic, hypnotising aura, and you just couldn’t help immersing yourself in it right after crossing the entrance, with “Welcome To The Amazing Mostro Show” reading above it. The space, reverberating with Eartheater’s electrifying music, was filled with life-size amusement park props – roller coaster, Ferris wheel, and flying swings (with flying Mostro-wearing fake legs!). The spacious interior and high ceilings of Park Avenue Armory, with metal constructions and props in half-light, created a unique atmosphere for an equally mesmerising and innovative collection.

The celebs who visited the show seemed to be as impressed by the show as we were, taking countless selfies with the enormous, lighted flying swings in the background. Among notable guests were Emily Ratajkowski, Ashley Graham, Davido, Kyle Kuzma, Becky G, and Hari Nef.

However, the key celebrity in PUMA’s Mostro collection is, no doubt, ASAP Rocky, who starred in the uncanny, Alien-like advertising short film, published a few days before the show. With its Ridley Scott inspirations, it already set the cosmic tone for the whole event and whetted our appetites. But we probably hadn’t imagined in our wildest dreams what a breathtaking show PUMA was to offer us.

Stakes were high for the viral brand’s second New York show, but Marcelo Gaia delivered a collection that had the internet in just as much of a frenzy as last year. The SS24 show Gaia turned up the heat by adding sexiness to their signature bows, ruffled mesh gowns, and low-waist maxi bottoms. One look in particular, a nude lace-up corset and long skirt, has Fashion TikTok on their knees. The pieces are meant to let you wear your fantasies, with soft pink and cream colors dominating alongside dreamy satin, tulle, and velvety fabrics. What caught everybody’s attention is that this collection adds diversity to their sizes, using ribbon ties and stretchy materials. From Sailor Moon-inspired bandage dresses to wide-brimmed hats as a nod to Audrey Hepburn, the dreamy inspiration is clear. Feminine icon Cindy Kimberly closed the show in a bridal dress, cementing the show as one of this season’s highlights.

For Spring 2024, Sandy Liang took the concept of “I’m just a girl” and turned it into a show. The hyperfeminine, nostalgic, and whimsical ensembles had all the ballet core and coquette fans gasping in delight. We’re sure to see all the New York cool girls wearing the pleated skirts and ballerinas featured in no time. The “The Virgin Suicides” collection was inspired by Sofia Coppola’s cult film of the same name, blending its girliness with a Y2K and mermaid aesthetic. Think bow bags, graphic tees, and lot’s of shells. The color palette matched too, with icy pink, cream, and navy blue reigning the runway. Her eponymous label used to be an if-you-know-you-know brand, but this show will earn her a spot amongst the international titans.

LaQuan Smith

A NYFW staple, LaQuan Smith’s show had the front-row celebrities and toughest critics hollering at the sexy and provocative attire. Saweetie, Mary J Blige, Laverne Cox… all the A-listers came to see what the Queens-born designer had in store— and he did not disappoint. The afterparty at the exclusive and infamous club The Stranger will no doubt double its popularity, with guests including Parris Goebel, Tinashe, FloMilli, and Coco Jones. For Spring 24, Smith delivered an intergalactic glam dream, with sci-fi references from Barbarella and Freddy Mercury. The color palette matched just that, with metallics and colors like fuchsia, aqua, and purple taking center stage. In terms of the garments, we saw NSFW mesh bodysuits, metallic cargo pants, and strapless dresses with the highest slits possible. Smith made this one for the it-girls and confident women.

Sami Miro Vintage

For her NYFW debut, the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist brought L.A. fashion to the mix. For her ‘Zero Waste’ collection, Miró showcased the upcycled garments that made celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Cardi B, and Rosalia love her brand. Her first show was highly anticipated, a warranted feeling after seeing the skin-baring creations that strolled down the runway. Everything had a DIY element as a tribute to when she reworked her thrift shop finds as a teen, from deconstructed blazers to leather cutout dresses sporting neutral colour palettes filled with cream, black, and grey. But what truly made the show was when she came out to the runway to cut a pair of long black pants into a flowing gown. That’s a big yes from us.

Buci NYC

The New York label BUCI also finally made its NYFW debut, with a show that proved why its clothes are a must in every It girl’s closet. Despite her brand only being three years old, designer Mishka Ivanivic managed to weave sensuality into her ethereal aesthetic. The collection adorned flowing scarves, chic jackets, and coquette silhouettes, inspiring thoughts of an autumn daydream. The reds, browns, and ivories just contributed more to that end-of-summer feeling, but what made it stand out were the transformable pieces. Tied-up mini dresses becoming long flowing ones, adjustable skirts… BUCI didn’t shy away from highlighting what it’s famous for–and we couldn’t be more glad.

Luar

The coveted spot of the week was filled by Luar, who closed NYFW by giving fashion what it needs the most right now, Raul Lopez poured his soul into the ‘Socorro’ collection, inspired by the battle between religion and hedonism, he saw in his home country of the Dominican Republic. He showed this by contrasting modesty with sexiness: peekaboo hemlines, skirts that button up to show more or less leg, and shorts with long, billowing tails. The Brooklyn-based designer also merged office attire with party clothes through grey sleek suits, LBD’s, and tan deconstructed pieces. But that’s not all; Lopez found a way to sneak his origins into the collection, filling it with a broken leather reminiscent of the walls of his home. Crowding the runway were also different versions of the Ana bag that threw the brand into the limelight. Guests Lourdes Leon, Gunna, Doechii, and JT can attest to the show’s success.

The Wednesday Addams Effect

Ever since the hit Netflix show Wednesday graced our screens at the end of 2022, pop culture has gone wild for anything Wednesday related. At the fashion weeks, we saw a resemblance in the make-up looks that were styled on the catwalk to the aesthetics seen on the Netflix show. 

In New York, Rodarte styled bold blocked eyeliner, like the eyeliner that celebs such as Julia Fox have been pictured rocking in recent months. The gothic glam look is one that is clearly sticking around as it continues to gain popularity. Rodarte paired their eyeliner art with black lipstick to finish off this goth glam look. They used Nars products to create these killer looks; so we recommend using the Nars Lipstick in shade Heroine Red. This lipstick has a matte finish so we also recommend adding gloss on top to create that wet look that the model styled. To top it off, we think that the Nars High-Pigment Longwear Eyeliner would be perfect for creating those daring eyes. 

In London, it was Bora Aksu, Chet Lo and Simone Rocha that were honouring the gothic glam on their catwalk debuts. Bora Aksu’s looks looked like they had just stepped off the set of Wednesday, with their black lips and minimal eye makeup. Simone Roger had a unique twist to her looks that simulated the gothic glam aesthetic by having bows on the cheeks of her models as part of an accessory. Chet Lo incorporated the gothic glam by styling black bows and bow-like hairstyles, alongside black creative eyeliner and dark lips. These looks from London are all abbreviations of the gothic glam make-up trend that we’re all so obsessed with right now. 

The beauty of the gothic glam trend is that the base makeup is very minimal; it honours natural-looking skin and therefore you do not need full coverage products on your face to create this look. Using a good moisturiser and primer with minimal concealer and maybe some highlighter would be enough makeup needed to create the dewy skin look. 

When it comes down to styling some of the gothic glam looks, black lips and bold black eyeliner are our go-to. The Elf Cosmetics Expert Liquid Eyeliner or the Mac Brushstroke Liner would be the perfect products to use if you were thinking about going for the bold eyeliner aesthetic. The Lottie London Glitter Fix Bomb Face and Body Adhesive is an ideal product to use if you fancy copying Simone Rocha’s Face bows and need some glue to attach them.

In Milan, Etro and GCDS emphasised a softer take on the gothic glam look. They focused more on styling subtle smokey eyes or simply rocking basic black eyeliner. Out of all the looks, these ones are the most wearable for day-to-day looks. The Simpsons mini eyeshadow palette by Revolution has a lovely selection of shimmery black eyeshadows that would look perfect for a black smokey eye. The Dior Mono Couleur Couture eyeshadow in shade Black Bow is a matte black eyeshadow that will give your eyes intense colour and be perfect for a dramatic and well pigmented smokey eye look.

Shades of Shimmer 

The next theme that we noticed in New York and London Fashion Week was the shimmery starlike aesthetic that included sparkles across the eyes in a range of different styles.

In New York, Thom Browne created a masterpiece of the planets in his design which continued within the make-up and hairstyle that were created for his models. One of his models styled an updo that resembled a planet-like shape and was dyed white to look translucent by nature. 

He continued the theme of translucent white across the eyes by creating a white block shape that resembled a sort of eye mask on the model’s face. On top of the white base, the model-styled glittery Silver Stars dotted around the cheekbones and by the eyebrows. This portrayed the stars in the sky and is one of the most creative looks that we saw on the runway. Thom also dressed the model in long curly white nails to finish off this incredible look. For this look, we recommend using a combination of white eye shadow, white concealer or white face paint to help build up a pigmented base that the model. 

Using either white concealer or white face paint as a base and adding in eye shadow on top means that you will have higher coverage and a smoother look to the make-up look and won’t have to use as much eye shadow to help build up pigment. The Cosmetics Camo Concealer in a white shade is a full coverage concealer that would be perfect as a base for this look. The Depixym Cosmetic Emulsion in shade Bright White is another alternative product that you can use to help build up a pigmented white base. This product is a multi-use cream that is suitable for your eyes, lips, and cheeks. It has a lovely matte finish and is super blendable, so it is perfect for this look. Once you have a pigmented base, you can then go in with a powdery eye shadow for that finishing touch to create that smokey, dusty finish. 

The Mac eyeshadow or the Creator Revolution SFX White Base Matte Powder are two eyeshadow options that would suit this look well. For the glittering stars, we recommend using glitter eyeliner to create the stars on your face. The OPV Beauty Metal and Glitter Liner is a super pigmented glitter eyeliner that has a water base so it won’t smudge. 

Altuzarra was also present at NYC Fashion Week and styled a goddess-like vision on the runway with gold eyeliner designs across the model’s eyes. This makeup look is a different sort of shimmer compared to the other look that we saw in NYC fashion week. The one by Altuzarra is enchanting and mystical as it resembles a sort of Aphrodite aesthetic. The Kiko gold liquid eyeliner or the Dior eyeliner in shade Gold and Pearly Bronze would be perfect for this enchanting look. 

At London fashion week Conner Rives had a shimmery blue eyeshadow look that also resembled a mystical siren gaze, that was extremely flattering on the model and one that we are obsessed with. The shimmery blue levels up this look, making it dressy and seductive. Victoria Beckham’s Lid Lustre eyeshadow matches the one that Conner Rives’ model styles closely and therefore would be perfect to use.  A liquid eyeshadow would also be a good option for this look to create the pigmented and shiny aesthetic that Conner has gone for. The Sephora Collection of Colourful Special Effect Liquid eye shadow it’s a perfect product to use if you want a wet glossy look to this glittery eyeshadow style.

Old Hollywood Glamour 

One thing about beauty and fashion is that classic looks will always be relevant. One of the most staple pieces that the beauty industry has ever come across is the iconic red lip. This look is timeless and over the years we have seen many alterations. 

In New York, Christian Siriano created one of the sexiest and most sophisticated looks that we have seen on the runways this year. His model styled a-line coat and an elegant hat that covered her upper face revealing only her pouty red lips. She looked just like old Hollywood, glamourous, sexy and alluring. She had next to nothing underneath her coat as the only pop of colour being seen were her sultry red lips. The Dior Rouge Refillable lipstick is a lovely velvety lipstick that has good pigment and is irresistibly alluring. Alternatively, the Nars Audacious lipstick is a lovely cherry red and looks fun as well as sexy.

In London, Roksanda Ilincic created an adaptation to the timeless red lipstick look. The lips on her model had a more burgundy base to them creating a modern spin on this timeless classic. Her lips were moodier and mature, perfect for a variety of settings that you may need to pop out a dramatic lip look. Natural and Dewy

One theme that we saw across all three shows was the natural, dewy makeup look that sees minimal-to-no base makeup and a simple lip tint which allows natural features to shine through effortlessly. The key to this look is having a good skincare routine pattern down so that your skin looks hydrated and flawless.

In New York, Michael Kors and Proenza Schouler rocked very natural makeup looks with very minimal makeup on the models. When recreating natural makeup looks, we recommend using a trusted moisturiser, hyaluronic acid as a serum, a vitamin c serum and either a lip tint or lip balm on the lips. You’re going to want a very hydrating skincare routine so that your skin looks healthy and plump. We recommend using the Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Cream as this two-in-one formula will give moisture to your face as well as have the same activities that a serum would encourage. Therefore, using this product will allow you to add vitamin C to your routine which will help brighten your skin’s complexion. Swapping your lipstick or lip gloss for a skin tint or lip balm will keep your lips looking natural but the dash of colour will make your face look alive. In London and Milan, similar looks were followed with designers such as Nensi Dojka, Ahluwalia and Blumarine all rocking very natural makeup looks. Their model’s skin was well moisturised and therefore appeared shiny and, in some places, highlighted thanks to the well-equipped skincare routine. Alternative Pops of Colour

The final set of beauty looks that we fell in love with at the various fashion weeks was a group of looks that had alternative takes on adding colour to their model’s faces. These are some of the more creative styles that we saw on the runways and ones that would be ideal for party events or festivals in the spring and summer. 

In London, Chet Lo had a pop of colour on her model faces in the middle of their eyebrows and on the sides of their eyes that resembled an explosion of colour. Pink, green and purple were spotted, and it helped make the looks appear fun and quirky on the runway. The Beauty Bay Bright Matte 42 colour palette is an amazing palette that has extremely pigmented colours in a variety of shades and would be perfect for an explosion of colour on your face like the one seen on the Chet Lo runway.

In Milan, Prada blew us away with the alternative-coloured lashes they styled in a variety of shades, which brought an added spice to the model’s makeup looks which were very natural apart from their lashes. 

When recreating this look, using coloured mascara is your best bet. Barry M does a lovely purple mascara, Revolution does a volumized blue mascara and Dior does a captivating red. Colourful lashes are a fun and unique way to dress up any makeup look and make it seem super creative. If you are not sold on the coloured mascara, but you’re still after a product that can give you the looks seen on the Prada runway, why not try coloured false lashes instead? You can get individual lashes or sets of lashes to wear with a variety of colours. You can also use individual-coloured lashes mixed in with the black lash set for that dash of colour that you desire.

Perhaps the most surprising thing so far has been the important role that animals have played in the collections. The animal kingdom appears to have inspired designers across the board for NYFW, from zoomorphic models to butterfly wing prints. So, without further ado, here is our rundown of everything you need to know about New York Fashion Week so far.

Collina Strada

We may have already seen hyper-realistic animal outfits take to the catwalk this year with Schiaparelli’s taxidermy-inspired looks causing quite the stir at Paris Fashion Week last month. However, Collina Strada’s zoomorphic collection could not have been more different. Collina Strada’s enthusiasm for environmentalism has been clear for a very long time, but their latest ‘Please Don’t Eat My Friends’ Campaign solidified this position even further. In AW21, creative director Hillary Taymour explored the “Animorphs” theme digitally where looks were paralleled with correlating animal images. The AW23 collection, however, took this motif to a new level where the models now physically morphed into animals using incredibly detailed facial prosthetics.

The collection was another of Collina Strada’s sustainable ranges and followed some of their trademark styling decisions including extreme layering of sheer or lace pieces, oversized silhouettes that skimmed the body, and the pairing of dresses and trousers in the same look. The show also featured Collina Strada’s recent collaboration with Vans, a vibrant and playful collection that brings childhood nostalgia to your adult wardrobe.

Anna Sui 

Anna Sui’s ‘Heaven Can Wait’ show was not only intimate in terms of size, with only about 80 guests in the Peppermint Lounge, but also in its designs. Channelling inspiration from the 90s and 2000s; the slip dress was at the core of this collection. Anna Sui shared on Instagram “I wanted little dresses to dance in. Slip dresses in satin or chiffon with lingerie lace trim plus beautiful blouses and jackets with the same treatment.” This tied the intimacy of dressing to the intimacy of the bar and, of course, to New York City nightlife. 

The collection explored the looks of the 90s and 2000s in a youthful way that was inspired by nightlife. The models took to a small stage and danced in front of the crowd of onlookers before treating the bar as their catwalk. The collection was not only reminiscent in the sense that the looks took inspiration from the 90s, 2000s and even 60s but also because Anna Sui brought back items from her earlier collections for this show. To celebrate the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Rabbit, Sui brought back her bunny ear hats from her 1998 collection as well as crochet hats from 1993. 

Dion Lee 

Skin is often a focus of Dion Lee’s work, usually playing with the binary between what is and isn’t on show. However, this collection took a slightly different look at the concept of skin, focusing instead on the skin shedding experienced by reptiles. The collection featured an array of looks inspired by reptilian scales including snake and crocodile prints but also the warping of other materials and incorporation of Dion Lee’s trademark cut-outs in order to create textures reminiscent of a reptile. 

The play on the notion of skin continued beyond the prints at hand as Lee focused heavily on silhouettes and textures in order to depict the moment of skin being shed. This included a variety of distressed materials, including wool and denim, as well as a focus on outerwear, all playing into the idea of layering and a ‘second skin’.

Heron Preston 

Heron Preston just made a monumental New York Fashion Week debut. The San Franciscan designer usually showcases his collections at Paris Fashion Week and so treated this debut as a fashion homecoming, paying homage to the city that Preston has called home for the past 15 years. The show opened with a group of individuals wearing utility-inspired vests, in Heron’s trademark vibrant orange, spray-painting the concrete floor with directions that the models would later follow. This set the scene for a collection that was sure to celebrate city-life by painting a literal street for the streetwear collection to make its debut.  

As a designer that predominantly champions streetwear influences, the show was full of utilitarian-inspired looks, however, they did not come without that New York fashion-scene flair. Utility jackets were cropped and paired with skirts over trousers or sheer bodysuits, leather jackets were paired with chainmail hoods, and tracksuits were paired with furry boots. This combined the fun of New York City fashion with streetwear basics, in a perfect love letter to the city and community that was being honoured. 

Prabal Gurung 

Prabal Gurung’s ‘Anichya’ (Impermanence) collection continued the nature-inspired theme that we have been seeing throughout New York Fashion week so far as it celebrated metamorphosis through a butterfly wing motif. The pattern was central to the collection, appearing not only on several of the opening looks from the show but also as the background for promotional images posted on Instagram.  

As the show went on the print itself undertook a metamorphosis as the pattern became less prominent and instead intricately appliqued organza took centre stage. However, even as the butterfly wing pattern faded out of the collection, its inspiration remained clear. Instead, the flowing silks and sheer dresses mimicked the nature of the butterfly wings and we are reminded of the theme of impermanence as we are thrust between the juxtaposition of light and dark, of the delicate and the durable.
