Whilst brands like Dermalogica have launched interactive, 3D virtual experiences, labels such as Nars have not only created a collection of NFTs, but have partnered with Roblox to incentivise users to remain engaged with their products – whether physically, or online. From Fenty Beauty’s decision to file a trademark for virtual downloadable goods, to L’Oréal’s 17 trademark applications linked to NFTs, it can’t be denied that the beauty world is set to tackle just about anything that comes its way.

Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about the five beauty brands that are taking the metaverse by storm.

Dermalogica

In July 2021, Dermalogica soft-launched its virtual reality e-commerce storefront, enabling users to purchase featured products. Whilst including an avatar of Dermalogica’s VP of Technology and Innovation, Dr. Angela Murphy, users can employ a Dermalogica aesthetician locator, utilise a free skin analysis face mapping tool, and even watch educational videos on the brand’s latest products. Whilst heightening brand awareness and driving website traffic, it’s Dermalogica that undoubtedly has innovation at its forefront.

Nars

Sold via NFT marketplace Truesy to intentionally coincide with National Orgasm Day, in July 2021, Nars Cosmetics commissioned three artists to create NFTs inspired by their signature Orgasm line, with prices ranging from $50 to $500. To make matters more exciting, Nars further entered the metaverse when they partnered with Supersocial to launch an immersive virtual experience on Roblox. The feature, known as Nars Color Quest, was inspired by the brand’s Laguna and Light Reflecting product franchises, depicted via four different islands. Each is home to a non-playable character, including founder and creative director François Nars, where users can use virtual currency to purchase a plethora of virtual looks and merchandise – building their very own makeup palettes inspired by real-life products. Targeting 13 to 24 year-olds, Nars are inevitably set to conquer the next generation of beauty fanatics.

Clinique

Recently, Clinique launched its inclusive ‘Metaverse Like Us’ NFT project, partnering with makeup artists Sheika Daley, Emira D’Spain, and Tess Daly. Within the brands collection of avatars, 60% depict people of colour and 20% represent those suffering from issues such as Vitiligo and Down Syndrome, ensuring that a wide range of communities receive the representation they deserve in the virtual realm. Whilst the avatars are more than just images and can be used to travel between different metaverse spaces, each of the beauty looks represent an achievable reality utilising Clinique’s staple products. In addition to boosting sales, Clinique is simultaneously opposing the unrealistic beauty standards that are embedded within our everyday reality, taking advantage of new technologies to advocate individuality in all its shapes and sizes.

Byredo

As an increasing number of its counterparts continue to invest in the digital realm, Byredo has caught on. Partnering with Nike’s digital fashion startup, RTFKT, the pair are set to release a series of “digital and physical fragrances.” Made up of 26 different components that reflect a variety of emotions, such as harmony and naivety, the collectable smells are available in limited numbers, solely existing within Web 3.0 and flaunting their title as ‘the scent of the metaverse.’ Both bold and experimental, we wouldn’t expect anything less from a label like Byredo.

Charlotte Tilbury

This April, Charlotte Tilbury launched its 3-Dimensional, immersive virtual shopping world, including a virtual try-on feature as well as the chance to book 1-2-1 virtual consultations. Collaborating with e-commerce platform Obsess to launch the Pillow Talk Party Virtual Wonderland, guests are met by a 3D avatar of Charlotte Tilbury herself, accessing exclusive content and engaging with the ‘shop with friends’ feature. What better way to celebrate the success of a collection as iconic as this one?

Along with a nation-wide lockdown, the current Covid-19 outbreak has also brought a new meaning to word face masks. What was once a beauty product featuring in our skincare routines and self-care weekends has become a facial protection barrier from contracting the Coronavirus.

These face masks come in different forms, from the paper and the homemade cloth mask to the surgical and N95 mask. Face masks have become a required accessory to wear when going outside, but what happens when this protection mask leads to a skin breakout? Voir fashion speaks to Dr Elizabeth K. Hale on the impact of face masks on your skin how to prevent, combat and treat possible breakouts.

We spoke to Dr hale on the possible cause of skin breakouts or irritation after wearing face masks. We were surprised to hear the problem might not be the face mask, but the state of your skin and the weather as it relates to your skin type when wearing the mask.

Generally speaking, the skin is most sensitive and most prone to irritation when it is dry and dehydrated. So theoretically, if the weather conditions are dry or if we are indoors with the heat on with no humidifier, our skin is going to be at greatest risk. Hopefully, as the weather warms up, and the air is not as dry, we should better tolerate wearing masks. However, one thing to be aware of high pollen counts accompany springtime, so our skin may be more sensitive and reactive than in another season. Also, people who are getting acne under their masks may find the opposite; the warm, humid weather may contribute to worsening breakouts, so look for a mask that is not too tight and occlusive.

Now that we know the causes, how can we prevent skin irritation or breakouts as not wearing a mask is not an option? Dr hale speaks on the importance of maintaining your skin barrier as this is your skin protector.

It’s essential to keep our skin barrier intact, so outside irritants and allergens are less likely to bother us. The way to do this is to use a gentle cleanser (think Dove), make sure to moisturise ideally with a moisturiser containing sun protection (think EltaMD, Cerave) and avoid products and procedures that can injure the skin barrier. For example, on a regular day, products with glycolic acid and retinol or exfoliative sonic brushes may have a role in our skincare regimen; during the time of wearing masks, we should cut down or hold off for now, so our skin barrier is not impaired. Also, avoid heavy make-up; the extra occlusion provided by the mask is going to congest your skin, leading to breakouts.

Before you swear off the outside now that the doctor has recommended avoiding make-up. Dr Hale understands the role make-up plays in your life, and she has suggested alternative ways to slay your look while still protecting your skin.

I have been telling my patients and friends to play up your eyes, this might be a time to try Latisse as our eyelashes have become our greatest accessories! As far as make-up, less is more now! Look for a lightweight tinted sunscreen, which can provide a little colour and extra protection.

As we have stated before not wearing a mask is not an option because as much it may affect your skin the latter puts you in a greater risk of contracting the virus, and I don’t know about you, but I’d rather weather the skin irritation. Thanks to Dr Hale, you may not have to choose the greater risk, she gives a skincare routine after taking off your masks to repair the damage on your skin during the day.

Gently clean your face when you remove your mask and apply a lightweight moisturiser after cleansing. Now might be a good time to try a hydrating skin mask with hyaluronic acid to restore hydration to the skin. If you are breaking out, while it may be tempting to use an acne mask, these often contain acids which may further irritate your skin barrier.

What if you are already experiencing a rash or skin irritation because of the mask. Dr hale has advised on how to identify it and the steps to take and skincare ingredients to use to mend your skin.

There are two main types of skin issues resulting from wearing masks all day.

The first is irritation, rashes and skin sensitivity. For this, avoid irritating products, use gentle cleansers and moisturise! Try to protect the skin barrier!

The second common skin annoyance from all this mask-wearing is acne or breakouts. This is more common in people with oily skin and those wearing heavy make-up under their masks. These people should consider cleansing with salicylic acid wash and look for an OTC acne product like Differin or speak to a dermatologist about getting a prescription like Epiduo or RetinA micro to spot treat the acne lesions. Just remember, when treating acne, less is more – if you apply too much of an acne product, you will dry your skin out too much, leading to further irritation and peeling.

We grew up being told to wear ‘Pink to make the boys wink’; the colour that is associated with being ‘pretty’, ‘feminine’, ‘dainty’ and ‘delicate’. As a now 23-year-old woman who has spent her life trying not to be seen as ‘delicate’ and ‘dainty’, looking back, I don’t know which boys I was trying to make wink when I was a six-year-old. But even I, the mildly tomboy-ish, weirdly dinosaur obsessed child, wined relentlessly at my poor dad until he spent his one day off a week traipsing to B & Q to accompany my head-strong little five-year-old self in finding the perfectly garish shade of pink (bubble-gum punch pink to be exact) for him to smother my bedroom’s fresh, white walls in.

Having supervised the majority of my dad’s wall-painting, I strutted into the room for the final reveal. I remember gazing around at the gaudy walls that were the perfect, lurid contrast with my green and brown coloured dinosaur figurines and thinking…this is it; I am now a woman.

Comparing my feelings towards the colour pink back when I was younger and more concerned with the politics between my Bratz and my Barbies and less concerned with the politics behind the colour in question, to the general consensus towards it now, I feel like the colour gets a lot of unnecessary stick. This sounds overdramatic, and I don’t care- forget starting my period or getting my first job; owning my very own pink-walled-room was, to me at the time the epitome of womanhood. I remember lounging on my bed like the lady of leisure I was, looking across the landing smugly into the desolate, cold, white-washed wasteland with the odd blue-themed accessory (otherwise known as my brother’s room), and pitying the fact that he would never be a girl. If anything, it was probably my first moment of feeling empowered as a girl.

Fast forward seventeen years and the colour pink has now become so messily intertwined with the politics of being female it is almost the ‘taboo’ of the colour wheel. Thinking about the politics behind the colour pink, that iconic scene in Legally Blonde springs to mind. Upon being capable of passing the same exams as everyone else in the university, and therefore being on the same intellectual level, our girl Miss Woods totters into class clad head to toe in pink and isn’t taken as seriously as her dull, grey suit-wearing peers. Did anyone ever stop to think that about the fact that MAYBE it was less down to the fact that she was wearing pink, and MORE down to the fact that she’s a female?! Ground-breaking, I know.

The fact of the matter is, females haven’t been taken seriously since men decided we are only good for popping out babies and making sarnies. Therefore, any colour associated with us isn’t going to be taken seriously, unfortunately for pink, she was the chosen one. I completely get that the colour could be seen to reinforce stereotypes, and as much as I understand why women don’t want to be defined by a colour that is seen to be ‘pretty’, ‘dainty’ and ‘delicate’, I think we’ve just about proved we possess enough brain cells to manage to vote, hold down a job and pop out the odd baby and make the odd sarnie.

There is undeniably still a way to go before the remaining people on this earth whose brains have failed to evolve past the 1600s manage to comprehend the (very) simple fact that men and women are equal. But in the meanwhile, whilst we wait for those people to either get a grip or die out, we shouldn’t be disowning the colour pink because it is associated with being feminine! Personally, I want to wear anything, and everything associated with being a woman, because I am proud to be a woman. That feeling that the colour pink gave me when I was six has always kind of stuck with me. Even now, 500 pink dresses, tops, trousers later, when I am shopping I am still drawn like a hawk to anything with the slightest hint of pink. To me, the colour pink is feminine; and therefore is powerful, strong, and deserves to be worn with pride (plus, let’s be real girls; she’s cute). So, join the revolution; it’s time to reclaim how the colour that is so ultimately feminine is viewed. Remember; there’s power in the pink!

I mean 9 quid?! AND it’s amazing! Not only is it vegan, has SPF 15 and leaves a pretty glow, but it actually works as a moisturiser as it has shea butter! You really cannot ask for more in life can you?

Make-Up

Let’s start this off with the iconic Bobbi Brown Extra Illuminating Balm £45. Okay, a little pricey but so worth it for this gorgeous extra bit of glow for underneath your make-up, or even alone! Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand £29 is a stunning glowing liquid high-blusher, this will add a healthy colour whilst not matting your skin down, keeping it nice and plump. The two best foundations for this trend has just got to be Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation £42 and the classic NARS Sheer Glow Foundation £33.50. To be perfectly honest, both foundations are a decent coverage and effortlessly blend out so seamlessly on your skin as well as adding to this healthy dewy look. You really cannot go wrong with either!

Last but most definitely not least…the #1 selling highlighter in the US: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter in Moonstone £30. I know this is a powder which typically won’t give you the shine like a cream or a liquid would but hear me out! With its velvety butter-like feel, this highlight is such a ‘soft focus’ highlight, meaning there are no big chunks of glitter making you feel like you can only wear it on a heavy night-time look. There are literally 14 freaking colours to this product…and it’s a highlight! Not to mention it even will slightly adjust to your skin tone anyway, there’s more of a chance to get one of these bad boys to match you better than a foundation! They do also sell minis for £16 if you want a little trial before splashing out on the full thing.

An absolute beauty this one is – it works as a moisturiser and primer and is so unbelievably nourishing on the skin, not to mention it will keep your make-up dewy and on your skin all day.

3). A winner as always is YSL Touche Eclat High Coverage Concealer £26; So, this isn’t the regular one everyone has dribbled over for years, that one was actually marketed as just a highlighter whereas this one is predominantly a high coverage concealer. You still get the beautiful luminosity of the OG Touche, but also a weightless and long wear concealer… really struggling to find a flaw here.

4). If that wasn’t illuminating enough for you so far, I’ve only just begun! Add even more glow with the YSL Touche Eclat Shimmer Stick £27. Cream/liquid products are really going to make your cheeks extra dewy as they catch the light super easily. This stick highlight comes in 5 different shades, my fav being the gorgeous champagne ‘Light Gold’, I mean just go into a store and swatch this on your hand it genuinely might be the prettiest thing I have ever seen. (Prove me wrong, I dare you!!) I mean the actual product has all the good stuff: easy to blend, super creamy and a lightweight texture. TBH, if you like a shimmery bronzer, you can easily use a darker shade to add some warmth to your skin.

5). Totally changes the game: NARS Orgasm Liquid Blush £25. I mean NARS’ ‘Orgasm’ range is iconic, we all know and adore it…this is just in a lightweight liquid form so it’s just another staple to add to the dewy trend.

6). Lastly for the base, slap on that Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray £24 to make sure your base doesn’t move all day…whatever your activity is. I’ve heard great things about this setting spray being 100% sex-proof; you can be the judge of that.

Eyes and Lips

1). Keeping with this gorgeous healthy glowy skin trend, Charlotte Tilbury Bigger Brighter Eyes Palette ‘Exagger-Eyes’ £40. OK, I know you’re thinking it’s a little pricey for 4 shadows, but honey if you just knew what these bad boys were capable of! All you have to do is watch one of those CT adverts I was talking about. Nuff said. I mean they’re just everything: buttery, pigmented, the product itself is just such amazing quality it’s insane! You’ll thank me.

2). The current brow trend is messy, undone and natural; easy as pie, brush up your brows with the tinted Benefit Cosmetics Gimmie Brow+ £22.50 for a full and put together bro duo that takes literally seconds.

3). You need to keep them hooked on your eyes…the only way is to add a sultry liner on your waterline. A black liner on the waterline is so sexy it really draws you to the eyes; even I give myself a double-take when I whack some on. My fav is Estee Lauder Double Wear Waterproof Eyeliner ‘Noir’ £19, just glides on the eyes so easily and stays all day. Even great for contact wearers like myself.

4). To finish the eyes off, add some famous Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara £22 (TBH if your flying solo this V day, this mascara is supposedly better than sex, and if you have a partner, you’re going to need that waterproof one…win win). Volumizing without being too clumpy, and it deff won’t transfer on your lids or under eye.

5). Last but certainly not least, chuck on some Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick ‘Glowing Jen’ £28. This was actually named after Jennifer Aniston and I believe a portion of the money for this collection goes to charity. Moisturising and so pretty and glowy oh my goodness it’s insane.

It can be hard to look and feel your best when you’re (literally) sweating your face off. It’s frustrating getting ready for the day, only to feel your make-up sliding around by 11am. In the heat, nobody wants much on anyway, especially if it’s not going to last.

Here are our top 5 summer beauty essentials that will keep you picture perfect all day.

Foundation – Technically this isn’t really a foundation, but Glossier’s Perfecting Skin Tint aptly named – perfect for summer. It’ll make you feel like you have something on to even out skin tone or cover up blemishes, but not so much that it’s uncomfortable or god forbid, cakey. For anyone who wants just a bit more coverage from their foundation, you can’t go wrong with NARS Radiant Longwear Foundation.

SPF – This one is non-negotiable. We all know what sun damage can do, and how inevitable it is if you don’t wear SPF! We’re also the first to admit how absolutely horrid lotions can feel – which is why we love Tarte’s TarteGuard sunscreen powder SPF30. It’s a powder, so there’s no waiting for anything to sink in, and it’s transparent, so just swipe it on top of your makeup and that’s it. It’s that easy..

Lipstick – There will never be a time here at Voir where the bold lip is not championed. Dare to be different! The secret reason we love this look so much, is that if you wear a bright lip, you don’t have to wear that much else. Basically, it’s easy to trick people into thinking you’re wearing more than you are. We recommend a bare face, brushed up brows and a good red lip. If you want to test the waters, then go for Kate Moss’ collection with Rimmel in #1. If you’re after another one to add to the collection, then go for Charlotte Tilbury in ‘Carpet Red’.

Highlighter and Bronzer – The second-best thing to being a bronzed glowing goddess is looking like one. Choosing a highlighter or a bronzer just seemed impossible so we had to pick both and nowadays, it couldn’t be easier with the abundance of 2-in-1 palettes on the market. NYX do a fantastic one in various shades, so you can mix and blend to find your perfect shade. If you want to splurge a little, then Tom Ford’s Shade and Illuminate is the way to go. A little pricier, but make-up artists everywhere swear by this. (Hot-tip: blend some bronzer into the sockets of your eyes to bring the whole look together.)

Cleansing Oil – We’re just as passionate about making sure you remove all the built-up-over-the-day-nasties off your face as we are making sure you look fab in the first place. Sulkin’s cleansing oil is pretty much everything free – parabens, sulphates, fragrance, the list goes on. This essentially means that it makes for happy skin (even sensitive!) but doesn’t compromise on effectiveness. This stuff works.

Inspired by the photographer, painter and filmmaker who heavily contributed to the Surrealist and Dada movements in the early 20th Century, the collection features some of Man Ray’s most iconic, monochromatic work, contrasted against fresh vibrant colours from the collection’s products. François Nars worked with the Man Ray foundation in order to create this stunning 23-piece collection in order for it to truly reflect the mood and time when the artist created his revolutionary work.

The collection features eye shadow palettes of deep and and flirtatious shades and lipsticks ranging from plums to seductive vintage reds with golds in the form of lip gloss and eye shadow to further create an iconic look.

Get the look with NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment and Precision Lip Liner…

To recreate the campaign look, prep the skin with the Pore and Shine Control Primer. Using your fingers, apply Punjab Velvet Matte Foundation Stick to the center of the face and blend outwards. Dab and blend Custard Radiant Creamy Concealer under the eyes. Using the #10 Powder Brush, set complexion with Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder.

To add dimension, use the #21 Contour Brush to sweep the dark side of Olympia Contour Blush onto the hollows of the cheekbones. For a soft flush, apply Sex Appeal Blush on the apples of the cheeks using the Yachiyo Kabuki Brush. Using your fingertips, apply Nepal Single Eyeshadow across the eyelid and blend up toward the crease. Using the #42 Blending Eyeshadow Brush, lightly trace the crease of the eyes to add dimension. Trace the upper lash line with Last Frontier Velvet Eyeliner. Using the #45 Smudge Brush, apply Last Frontier to the bottom lash line and blend outward.

Apply two coats of Black Moon Audacious Mascara to the top and bottom lashes. Define the brow using the #48 Brow Defining Brush and sweep strokes of Bali Single Eyeshadow into the brow. Apply Get It On Powermatte Lip Pigment directly to the center of the lips, starting at the cupids bow and following the lip line to fill in the rest of the lips.
