With its complexity, setting, and choreography, it was much more than a regular show – it was a performance. After Lucky Love’s emotional “Now I Don’t Need Your Love” and a stunning short film setting the tone, we had a chance to marvel at over 40 outfits, with their corsets, eye masks, patchwork, bandage-like tights, and layers of transparent, patterned tulle, organza, and chiffon. Add some oversized trenches, tweed flat caps, and black knee socks to get into the avant-garde Parisian mood. The run-down bar setting arranged for the show, with its worn wooden floor, old-school chairs, winking yellow lightbulbs, vintage mirrors, and empty wine bottles had a magnetising vibe of an antebellum bistro somewhere in the artistic district of Montmartre.

The highlights of the collection include long, oversized trousers, suits, and woollen trenches with lines of thread visible – as if the amendments process was still in progress. Other recurring motifs were body curves underlining long skirts and elegant female coats with puffed sleeves, covered with thin, loops-containing Lycra. The iconic tobi-toe shoes were also there! The most impressive outfits were undoubtedly the transparent, ankle-length tulle dresses, which brought female corporeality with all their curvy lines, artificial wasp waists, and pubic hair to the front. No taboos are to be found there! The collection ended in four white-blue striped dresses, the last of which was presented by the classy Gwendoline Christie. The outfits, together with long gloves, curly wigs, and blue eyelids created the effect of an American doll from the 1950s. 

One of our absolute favourites was a long, purple-pink-yellow tulle dress, accompanied by a tulle-wrapped white hat. The outfit left an uncanny feeling, as the model’s face looked like the one of a button-eyed doll from Tim Burton’s Coraline, and the tulle seemed to cover the whole body, looking like the skin of an alien. Indeed, the great idea behind this and many other looks was for the models to resemble dolls. From the corsets worn by both men and women to the porcelain-like necks, inhuman, unearthly-looking faces, bandaged legs and throats, the shaky-walking models seemed like actual porcelain dolls brought to life. As they passed unstably, looking deep into the spectators’ eyes, often nervously covering themselves 

to produce a shy, emotional effect, they were much more than mere models. They were actors, who played in the great show embracing human sensuality, emotionality, and corporeality. 

The doll effect was mostly reached thanks to the breathtaking makeup done by the fabulous Dame Pat McGrath. The porcelain-like, perfectly smooth faces, the glittering lips, and the intense colourful eyes were just marvellous, with the fluffy, aerodynamic, hat-like hairdos by Duffy completing the looks.

With the audience cheering and shouting “Bravo!” repeatedly right after the show, it seems that John Galliano once again proved that he and the Maison Margiela fashion house truly deserve their position at the top!

With over 50 shows from some of the leading fashion houses in the world, there was definitely a lot to take in but don’t worry, we secured the main designers here. Milan Fashion Week was a moment to remember. 

Diesel

Milan Fashion Week gave us the collaboration that none of us expected: Diesel x Durex. The catwalk took place in front of a mountain of red Durex wrappers and was soundtracked by an intimate playlist in a show that championed sex positivity. 

The collection featured Diesel’s usual edgy denim pieces, but the most impressive by far was the way that the brand put a spin on distressed denim. Rather than the usual rips and tears that form frayed edges and loose strings; Diesel incorporated delicate mesh in a sort-of sheer darning detail. This intricate detail not only elevated the look of ripped jeans, but it also played into the ever-popular push and pull of masculinity and femininity as the aggressive rips created a jarring contrast to the delicate lace mesh. 

Roberto Cavalli

Denim was also a huge part of the Roberto Cavalli show. Cavalli’s history is rooted in denim, the designer began his career by creating Frankenstein-esque creations out of scraps of denim; this history was a central source of inspiration for Fausto Puglisi’s collection.

Alongside denim, the collection featured various looks that were constructed by a collage of leather, adding an edgier element to the otherwise bohemian inspired designs. The brown-looks felt very inspired by a 1970s rocker-chic aesthetic, highlighting the retro influences that were weaved throughout the collection.

The collection also featured a heavy segment dedicated to black lace. This section featured a variety of looks that utilised black lace; everything from feathered catsuits to miniskirts took to the runway. This collection was not only an archival-inspired homage to fashion history, but it also served to prove the sheer versatility of materials and the way that they can be used to produce a vast selection of looks.

Blumarine

Set against the backdrop of a blazing ‘B’ and stony outcrop, Blumarine took us on the journey of Joan of Arc. The metallic tones put a modern spin on the iconography of Joan of Arc’s silver armour and the shearling knee-high boots featured buckles that played with designs of combat boots. Chainmail tops and dresses served to show the versatility of the collection’s muse as the looks transitioned from martyr to party girl. 

This collection took Blumarine’s usual Y2K aesthetic, which often manifested itself in hyper-feminine looks of bubble-gum pink and floral frills, down a much darker route. The grungy collection was fuelled by danger and while still feminine, the looks explored the dynamic between violence, threat, martyrdom, and womanhood.

MM6 Maison Margiela

MM6 pioneered trendy tailoring this Milan Fashion Week. The collection was made up of a variety of tailored pieces, whether they were worn in sets or as individual pieces; layered or minimally styled; deconstructed or classically built; the looks demonstrated the versatility of tailoring. In a collection that emphasised the coolness in wearability, all of the looks were elevated yet rooted in simplicity. 

We have seen many designers stray away from show-stopping, viral designs that the internet devours recently as they favour more wearable designs that can maximise sales. While this may sound like a boring development, MM6 proved that it does not need to be. This collection emphasised the possibilities that exist in our day-to-day wardrobes, an important aspect of the fashion industry that must not be ignored.

Moschino

The Moschino Autumn/Winter 2023 collection was inspired by Salvador Dali’s ‘The Persistence of Memory’. The famous melting clocks inspired the drip-like hems of the skirts that graced the catwalk. The fluid looks were paired with distorted patterns that both mimicked Dali’s painting and added to the ‘melted’ look of the clothes.

However, halfway through the show the collection took a punkier turn. The hedgehog-spiked headpieces were worn throughout the show, highlighting the influence of punk styles on the collection, but the clothes truly reflected this theme in the second portion of the catwalk. The elaborate ballgowns and extravagant silhouettes were Westwood-esque, in what many have seen as a tribute to the late designer.

GCDS

GCDS’ latest collection was inspired by the domestic, the looks took a more conservative and grown-up look to past collections by the designer, but that does not mean that the collection was plain or boring in any way. The collection featured a bag inspired by Giuliano Calza’s cat, a piece that highlighted the importance of domestic life within this collection. 

However, the domestic also came out in other forms, particularly the use of safety pins throughout the collection. This highlights not only the process of designing and creating clothes but also how clothes exist within the home. The use of such a mundane yet integral object within the collection perfectly bridged the gap between the high fashion industry and the domestic lives that inspired the looks. 

Cormio

Cormio have successfully jumped on the football bandwagon and used their show to emphasise the feminist roots behind this trend. The venue for the show was a football hall on the outskirts of Milan but, unlike the hyper-masculine world of football, women were allowed to take centre stage in this environment. 

Women in football have been marginalised and underappreciated for years and now femininity is fighting back. Instead of opting for more ‘masculine’ looks to fit in with this atmosphere, Cormio instead forced femininity into this environment, proving that there is a place for ‘girliness’ within football. The Y2K ‘punk princess’ inspired looks highlighted another traditionally masculine environment that has been successfully dominated by women for years. The pieces reclaimed sexist phrases and slurs, injecting an ironic sense of humour into the collection. 

However, our personal highlight from the collection was the hyper-feminisation of the literal football. Cormio turned the instrument of the sport, the thing that the entire game is dependent on, into a handbag in a camp reclamation of the sport. 

Sunnei

Never before have we seen a horizontal catwalk. But that is exactly what Sunnei gave us. Models gracefully traversed the traditional catwalk before partaking in an elaborate trust exercise at the end of the runway. After falling into the arms of onlookers the models crowd-surfed to the end of their runway. 

The collection itself prioritised eye-grabbing looks, from patchwork denim to fringed knits, the looks were perfect for the it-girl who wants to stand out. Much like the runway show, the collection was non-traditional but not unwearable, the looks perfected the more out-there elements of contemporary streetstyle. 

Dolce & Gabbana 

After days of online speculation, Kim Kardashian sat front row at the Dolce & Gabbana show this Milan Fashion Week in an archival red two-piece that was a modernised look from the designer’s 1990 collection. Although onlookers were yet to realise it, Kim’s look set the stage for the collection that they were about to see as the Autumn/Winter 2023 ‘Sensuale’ collection was deeply inspired by archival work.

While lingerie-inspired looks are not uncommon on the runway anymore, Dolce & Gabbana were designing these sorts of collections back in the 90s. With this context the lace-heavy underwear-as-outerwear looks that graced the catwalk this season were more historic than you might think. The collection even featured a corset from 1991 and a coat from 1997 as the designer works to bring back some of their iconic pieces.

“I found poetry in my reflection,” says John Galliano, who takes from the heritage of the House materials to help assist the deconstruction of dresses – typical of the brand.  However, the brand is not just deconstructed garments anymore. There are fragments of mirror and leather laces to be found, then there is the story, which is transferred to the clothes with pieces of newspapers embroidered by hand on the fabrics by Celia Pym, a message launched not to forget the past and establish a better future.

With the collection ‘Artisanal’ 2021 Maison Margiela after Recicla, has introduced a new technique, “the essorage”, which could metaphorically be inspired by the process that carried forward the alchemists. It is based on recycling, and the subsequent upcycle of fabrics from stock or charity stores, materials that are enlarged from eight to twelve times only to be restricted again through chemical washes and treatments that reveal the authentic colours. John Galliano draws on the blue works of Anna Sokol ova. Pictorial illustrations are transformed into blue embroidery on fabric majolica, assembled at a later time and resembling a knitwear sweater.

Another core of the collection co-ed ‘Artisanal’ 2021 Maison Margiela was the denim, which is brought back to the original use of fishermen. Blue denim pants, fitted with high fishing boots and padded jackets, but also layered in couture version over imposing dresses. And again the return to nature, with animal masks made of cardboard used at the time of the ritual. Carvings that propose prints in a three-dimensional version, tricorn hats and sailors that bring us back to the culture of the Dutch fisherman and imposing clothes built for assembly.

“A FOLK HORROR TALE” THE MAISON MARGIELA FILM A folk tale with truly horror shades. The video for the co-ed collection Artisanal 2021, created  by John Galliano and the filmmaker Olivier Dahan, tells this new sense of historical community brought back to nature in a version untouched by time and space. A 3D photorealistic badge emerges made with effects, lights, LED softwear, unreal landscapes that want to imitate reality inspired by the paintings of the Flemish artists.

As Paris Fashion Week draws to a close, here are all the highlighting moments from the day. Fashion Week, you will be missed.

Chanel

There could be no better way to end Paris Fashion Week, than with Chanel’s SS21 show. The collection is authentic and generates a level of ease, merging the brand’s classic aesthetics with the rejuvenating power of new trends. The iconic Chanel tweed suit was reimagined into shorts and dresses while they also debut cropped tops and shrunken bags. The collection also went heavy on accessories, with glittering belts and phone lanyards, the kind of pieces that instantly make their way onto Christmas lists, enticing people into stores and demonstrating that sustained power and relevance of the brand.

Much of the collection was new and energetic, from glittering unitards with crossed haltered straps to a cropped leather jacket with ‘Chanel’ embossed on the sleeve, to dresses featuring neon Chanel logos, effortlessly printed onto fabric in a way that screams art nouveau. There was also a selection of very on-trend bra tops, paired with low slung skirts in a midriff-baring arrangement that CoCo Chanel herself likely would’ve hated, but we can’t help but Stan. But the vision of CoCo Chanel and the traditional Chanel customer was still there, in silk scarves, tweed suits and beautiful jackets. This is unsurprising, given that Virginie Viard’s designs were inspired by classic French movies, the video teaser for the collection featured references to One Femme set one Femme and Le Mépris. From the classic to the contemporary, this collection is proof that Chanel has always, and will always, be ahead of the game.

Chanel Spring-Summer 2021 Show

Louis Vuitton

I think there is only one word to sum up this Louis Vuitton show: electrifying. The concept and collection are completely full of energy, and the show itself was completely ingenious. Designed by Nicholas Ghesquiere, models walk around a huge semi-classic semi-industrial building, strutting past the socially distanced mask clad crowd. At the begging of the show, electronic music blared which to me sounded like a plane landing, giving the unmistakable impression that something exciting is about to happen. Avant garde imagery was projected throughout the show – footage of musicians performing shifted to that of urban spaces and barren trees, at a rapid and dynamic pace. A voice is played throughout the show saying words that seem perhaps unconnected – tickle, reach, hook, skydive – but one with significance you cannot ignore: vote.

The first look of the collection included a jumper with ‘vote’ emblazoned upon it, instantly putting the houses political conscious front and centre. The collection is modern, chic and bursting with a sense of excitement about a new age in fashion, something which is very hard to achieve at the moment but that the house executes flawlessly. Standout pieces include glittering suits, oversized sweater dresses, tiny green bags and floor-sweeping trench coats. While much of the collection uses simple colouring – whites, greys and metallics, there are also hyper colourful items, lending an element of vibrant eccentricity to the collection. The show is hopeful, inspiring and an overall considerable achievement.

Maison Margiela

What is most striking to me about this collection, is the emphasis upon androgyny. Margiela has long been striving to produce genderless clothing, and in this collection, this aim is executed with class and precision in a series of striking designs. Creative director John Galliano, one of fashions best narrative tellers, has truly risen to the occasion of creating a virtual fashion experience – this is the second season the house has not had a runway show, but to Galliano, this experience still feels like a show. The video was filmed in Tuscany and the collection itself was inspired by 19th-century South American wedding photographs, but Galliano also wanted to bring in a ‘Wet look’ which he showed last season.

The collection is chic meets futuristic, with mesh head coverings in an almost blood-like red, paired with extravagant jackets that have detail which is truly to die for. Some of the imagery is truly luminous, like the image of a model wearing a floor-length white gown, while the moon shines through the fabric illuminating her. There is also a palpable element of gothic, in black headdresses, coat and tail suits and overdone eye makeup. The collection and experience of the show prove that for the house, imagination is well and truly alive.

Maison Margiela Co-Ed Collection Spring-Summer 2021 | S.W.A.L.K. II

Miu Miu

Sporty, chic and disparate, Miu Miu’s SS21 collection exudes nostalgia. The collection is varied, ranging from yellows and tweed skirts that are very Cher Horwitz, to track jackets and mini dresses with oversized bows. There are turtlenecks in monochrome prints and brown velvet, paired with midi skirts with crystal embellishments, long metallic coats and ruffled skirts paired with sports coats. Looking at the designs is like stepping into a fashion candy store, with each piecing nodding to a moment of iconicity in fashion.

2020 fashion has been full of surprises from the emerging new to the re-emerging old. The collections showcased have been completely contemporary and nowhere is this more apparent than in 2020’s net obsession. From Off-white to Burberry, netting was everywhere on the 2020 runway in a series of designs that are startlingly different showcasing both the versatility of the fabric and the innovation of the designer’s collections. The look has embodied different iterations, from net draperies undercoats, fishnet gloves, nettops, and dresses that are straight out of a 90s thrift store. The range of the looks is profound, going from elegant to sensual.

Arguably one of the best versions of the trend was by Off-white whose fall 2020 ready to wear collection saw Virgil Abloh back after taking time out the previous season. The collection was comprehensive chic with a clear familiarity in the collections grungier pieces. The collection included a stunning fishnet dress that was worn over a bare chest and white trousers. The ends of the fishnet drapery were coated in bright pink and the look was accompanied by an ankle-length trench coat that had one sleeve in bright pink. The look Off-white showed was equal parts illustrious, edgy and creative, the kind that streetwear fanatics would die for.

Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela also took on the look in designs that embody a new age of grunge. The Louis Vuitton look gives the impression of one having tumbled out of a 90s thrift store pairing fishnet with a bright red triangle bra and blue top with black vinyl trousers. Maison Margiela reflects edge, pairing a gothic net dress with a tartan scarf. Each look would go perfectly with cheap beer and a Nirvana concert.

Burberry also showcased embellished fishnet gloves, which were long length and black and embellished with crystals. Gloves have seen a resurgence on the 2020 runway, and Burberry’s take on the look screams modernity. Ports also took on the trend, pairing pantsuits with fishnet underpinnings.

While netting may be associated with grunge and edgy streetwear, Gabriela Hearst and Valentino showed that there is a range in this fabric in designs that are as ballroom as they are gothic. Gabriela Hearst also showcased fishnets but in a highly different way, the look reimagined evening wear with a jumpsuit with a bustier top accompanied by a draped black fishnet detail. The detailing hung off the shoulder and then ran down the forearm, with the netting draping around the rest of the clothing. Hearst took a classic look and intertwined it with a gothic and punk edge. Valentino took a similar approach reflecting that fishnet is not just for the nineties, reimagining it with an elegant spin. 2020’s net obsession is a re-imagination of elegance with a nod to nostalgia in a collection of looks that are as far-reaching in their style as they are incredibly cool. It would be insane not to.

Meet Shay, the Belgian born francophone artist. Shay, also known as Vanessa Lesnicki, gained major recognition from her club hit single PMW and has since continued to gain fame and more recognition within the music industry with her recent singles, Notif and Jolie, making her an artist to look out for. The singers’ provocative and individualistic style has also been another factor to her fandom. Known to create unique street style looks, Shay stated in a recent interview that she is majorly inspired by the matrix, but it is still very important for her to have her own style and for it to represent her personality. Wacky and illustrative: Matty Bovan gave us graffiti-like prints adding vibrant colours to his interesting silhouettes. His Spring/Summer 2019 collection is a perfectly chaotic amalgamation of bright colours and textures. Crocheted flowers over voluminous tulle skirts let us into a springtime fantasy of fairy tale dress silhouettes and edgy textural graffiti daydreams, and we love it.

Looking for coats that look worlds ahead of their time? Jarel Zhang has everything you need. Trench coat puffer jackets complete with puffer bows, strap details and even ruffles. Metallic, oversized coats with almost geometric silhouettes, even patchwork metallic pieces. Zhang gave us a whole new perspective on what a coat could be, and honestly we’re totally ready to be consumed by a futuristic puffer.

Delivering us dark blue and denim, Dilara Findikoglu’s SS19 collection did not disappoint. White and beige with gold detailing, blue PVC, reinvented black pinstripe suits: this runway gave us an edgy take on spring. Harnesses and corsets complimented looks, scarves that defied gravity added whimsicality to these inventive but edgy garments. Boldly embellished suits gave us a quintessentially Findikoglu feel, and we’re now totally ready to take on any season.

Rock and Roll pirates and socks with flip flops? Yep, that’s what we’re getting from MM6 Maison Margiela- but would we expect any less? Wonderfully ruffled shirts, pleated t shirt dresses, and beautiful silken fabrics gave us a collection that toyed with an edgy new romantic vibe. Bohemian style dresses and edgy prints, Margiela showed us a rebellious pirate princess kinda energy and we’re here for it. Looking to feel like a modern Jack Sparrow? Maison Margiela has exactly what you need.

Black, red and leather all over: Gareth Pugh gave us an essentially Pugh collection. 80’s shoulders with rhinestones, metallic pink leather dresses, red transparent PVC coats- this collection was every fashionable Goth’s dream. Platform shoes complemented these looks of incredible dark fantasy. Trippy black and red prints, patent leather in an array of colours and classically black looks gave us a collection that would an edge to anyone’s wardrobe.

Thanks to London Fashion Week we’ve been blessed with array of strange but beautiful styles, and we couldn’t be more obsessed. Whilst mainstream designers continue to push the boundaries of what’s mainstream, it’s designers like those in this article that create unusual but contemporary, strange but stylish looks, and we love that.

Coat silhouettes the size of small cars walked the runways at the latest Margiela show- they’d surely keep you warm in the coming cold weather, especially if styled in layers reminiscent to that on the runway.

A vast array of coats left anyone looking for outerwear spoiled for choice. Do you go for the transparent mac? The over-sized iridescent puffer coat? The traditional style yellow raincoat or a futuristic trench coat? Whatever your choice, any of these pieces would surely add a head-turning get-up to anyone’s wardrobe.

This collection definitely isn’t for the faint hearted, with the fabric combinations creating strange, almost otherworldly looks that still thankfully remain at the height of fashion.

The word apocalypse comes to mind when looking at Galliano’s creations, most likely due to the mix of colours and textures of the fabrics. The smooth and sleek metallics and iridescents paired with softer printed fabrics and transparent PVC make for the softer, more fantasy-like side of the collection, not to say that these combinations don’t pack a punch.

Strappy detailing that resembles parachute harnesses adds another element of visual interest to otherwise plain coats, along with pops of the primary colours, knitted jumper detailing and classic woolen coats. Galliano went in on this runway to create garments and pairings that are absurd, but through his wondrous power, actually work.

Chunky shoes seem to be a trend this fall, and as other fashion houses opt for boots, Margiela went in the direction of retro trainers. Not just any retro trainers however, trainers that would bring a whole other aspect to your shoe closet. You want high top iridescent trainers? How about trainers with a retro platform sole available in black, red, blue and white with avant garde strap detailing? Margiela’s got you. It’s safe to say Margiela has your retro sneaker game covered this Autumn. Don’t worry, we sighed with relief too.

Galliano has creatively and innovatively crafted pieces that we didn’t know we needed until now. Why would you say no to an over-sized, sleeveless, transparent anorak? We certainly wouldn’t. So buckle up everyone, you’ll soon be seeing an array of coat shapes, sizes and silhouettes on the streets; we’ll be changing up our coat game, will you?

In true Margiela deconstructing and redefining the silhouette tradition, Galliano has designed a collection that is crushed, squashed and mutated beyond conventional recognition. Layering is the essence of this oeuvre which interprets the concept of “creating your own world within a world that’s very troubled at the moment.”

Think sleeping bags, protective packaging, corrugated cardboard and spongy packing foam, all with a master’s touch and the quintessential Galliano cutting, draping and volume.

Add to this virtual reality headsets, iPads and iPhones attached to the models’ ankles filming the FROW, and it is clear to see that Maison Margiela Haute Couture AW18 marries conceptualism with artistry and adds a touch of modern elegance.
