We tend to look at fashion as a reflection of constant change, a stylistic evolution following trends and cultural development. But we forget that this is not always the case, the beauty of fashion sometimes simply relies on its roots, on the history behind certain brands and their designers.

KENZO’s Fall-Winter 2021 collection is the embodiment of this, the demonstration that reimagining and honouring ones’ past can be as exciting and moving away from it.

Current creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista decided to pay homage to the late founder Kenzo Takada, who passed away last October due to Covid-19 complications, through the latest FW collection. The collection was presented in the format of a live fashion film titled ‘KENZO Always’ and captured the vivid character of the late Paris-based Japanese designer, reminding us of his cross-cultural references, innovative silhouettes and “visionary spirit”.

Baptista had already demonstrated his impressive artistic direction in his first show for KENZO’s FW20, ‘Going Places, by maintaining alive the energetic approach to fashion cherished by Tekada and his designs. Yet he succeeded to surprise us once again with the ‘KENZO Always’ immersive collection and complementary virtual show.

The virtual show directed by Oliver Hadlee Pearch, choreographed by Jordan Robson, and accompanied by Planningtorock’s music was a reflection of Tekada’s freedom through eccentric and convenient fashion.

As explained by the Portuguese designer himself in a recent interview with Vogue, the collection was driven by his will to depict the “movement, comfort and freedom” that clothes can give you, while maintaining the eye-catching style of KENZO. Such as done with its folkloric garments and vibrant colour palette. The oversize choices, the textured materials and their neon colours redimension the essence of this brand, showcasing a series of dynamic looks that remind us of old KENZO shows but adapted to our ‘now’.

A now that relates to the idea of movement and comfort in our current state, to the lockdown and its limiting circumstances. The Kenzo FW21 collection feels almost like a translation of our current times into clothing, presenting a sort of duality that incorporates both Baptista’s time-relevant designs and KENZO’s timeless genes.

The second day of Paris Fashion week presented a multitude of looks created by an array of international designers; ranging from Ukraine, Lebanon and Belgium.

Kenzo

Throughout the physical show, Kenzo showcased a variation of colour; from bright pastel to striking shades of red. However, there appeared to be a clear theme running through the SS21 Kenzo collection; a celebration of nature, with a particular tribute to bees. Creative director Oliveira Baptista addressed the inspiration of the floral collection by noting that “the world is crying, so are the flowers.” Onlookers saw a heavy resemblance to beekeeper outfits, with vast wide brim hats, and loose-fitting trousers that drape with elegance.

The continuous use of large hats and face coverings also allude to a contemporary take on the coveted PPE of the ‘new world’. Other designers including Bora Aksu, have ameliorated this year’s global pandemic, to provide inspiration for their collections.

Balmain

The much-anticipated Balmain SS21 show was nothing short of spectacular, and Creative Director Olivier Rousteing certainly did not disappoint. The pre-runway show paid tribute to Pierre Balmain as it presented models in ‘70s inspired looks featuring the iconic PB monogram on the pieces. Flared bell trousers and fitted suit jackets confirmed a ‘70s theme, whilst affirming an allure of French elegance.

The show continued by delivering ostentatious, neon-coloured suits; sporting Balmain’s signature pagoda shoulder pads, and accompanied by PB monogram bags. Whilst these bold pieces stole the show, Rousteing’s collection displayed models wearing stunning gowns embellished with Swarovski crystals, captivating knitwear, and chić biker shorts.

Dries Van Noten

Belgian designer Dries Van Noten had always been a stranger to digital fashion prior to this pandemic. However, like many other fashion designers, he has successfully adapted to the new remote demonstration of collections this year. Dries van Noten’s first ever co-ed collection was presented in a series of colourful shots of models freely dancing to a drum beat.

The pinnacle of this SS21 collection is certainly within the colours and prints, that have been conceptualised from New Zealand Artist Len Lye’s celluloid film paintings. Van Noten himself said that he “started to look around for things that create a high energy: a lightness, but also different kinds of beauty… So it had not to be the beauty that makes your dream, but beauty that gives you energy: makes you want to move, go outside and do the things we can’t currently do so well.”

If Paris Fashion Week is anything to go by, 2019 is set to be an exciting year for menswear. Hosted between Tuesday 15th – Sunday 20th January, the spectacle saw runways awash with vibrant colours, patterns, ideas, and pieces that could only be described as art, but in the realm of fashion.

Patterns, prints and stripes are just a few of the elements bringing excitement to a new wave of menswear. Paul Smith showed us how to efficiently clash florals in a way that has only ever been seen in the furnishings of pensioners’ homes. Gucci’s collection looked as if they’d let a hyperactive child loose in a thrift store, with checks and florals, trousers covered in animals, then the most wonderful striped jumper paired with simple floral dungarees. Kenzo supplied us with checked looks that would brighten up even the darkest winter days, and Valentino’s collection was literally out of this world with UFO prints. The message to be taken from this is: adding a little bit of colour to your winter wardrobe will do no one any harm.

Animal Print

Hedi Slimane’s first menswear collection for Celine incorporated animal print in the most classic way, wearing your print as a coat over a well-fitted skinny suit. Raf Simons and Sacai both added a little extra to their animal prints with floral scarves, patterns and square print patches, and JW Anderson took a subtle approach with printed leg/footwear.

Depictions of Art

We all know that depictions of art completely depend on who is viewing them, so it’s really up to you to decided what is art, what is fashion, and what is both. Whether it’s the human form drawings at Loewe, to the graphic prints at Valentino, or the shirts/jumpers at Dior Homme to the doodles at Louis Vuitton, Fashion Week gave us looks worthy of a place at the Louvre.

Bold colour

Bold colour is the new black, according to Paris in 2019. It’s orange and pink that are leading the rainbow revolution, so take your inspiration from Raf Simons and Kenzo in picking one colour and matching it all over as a look. Alternatively, look to Paul Smith, Sacai, and Loewe, go with two or three bold colour choices and clash away.

Whether you choose to pattern it up, clash your way through winter in bold colour choices, or turn your wardrobe into a work of art, Paris Fashion Week Mens has shown that it’s time menswear made its way into the fashion spotlight. Gone are the days of ‘typical’ menswear and in are the days of men re-defining what their wardrobes mean to them. It’s time for a new era.

Facetasm was amongst the first group of designers to kick off Paris Fashion Week. They played around with layers and classic styles that took on a contemporary look with the use of bright colours that popped against the darker shades.

Issey Miyake Men’s clean aesthetic was lifted by the garments being exaggerated by shape and texture. The garments were bunched and tied together to create fluidity with the fabrics yet still showed shape to the models figures creating a clean and modern look.

Balenciaga’s S/S18 collection certainly turned heads and split some opinions with it’s third menswear collection designed by Demna Gvasalia. The show was set in the grounds of the Bois de Boulogne park which created a forest like environment with chairs stretching down the long catwalk. The choice of models certainly got people talking, the inspiration for the shoot was based on dads on their day off and to further portray this concept, they had actual families walking in the show. Some of the models had their kids walking along side them also dressed in Balenciaga garments with slogans that emphasised hope, which beautifully represent the younger generations.

Lemaire showed us how to work a colour palette and wear it well. Bright colours were balanced out with softer darker tones. Their garments were elegant with a causal feel. Mixing matte with lustre fabrics to add some real luxurious personality.

A bold contemporary art inspired collection was brought to the catwalk by Walter Van Bierendonck. Colourful Picasso style artwork popped against dark colours and garments were oversized and gave us a futuristic glance into a cartoon world of optical illusions where art meets fashion.
