“The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and we have more species of orchid than anywhere on earth,” Uchis says. “I always felt distinctly intrigued and magnetized by the flower. This album is inspired by the timeless, eerie, mystic, striking, graceful and sensual allure of the orchid. With this vast scope of fresh energy, I wish to re-define the way we look at Latinas in music.”

Her fans, the self-proclaimed ‘Kuchis’ ( no, the phonetic pronunciation is no accident), got a snippet of this reimagining in August with Muñekita. In the single, her signature soft vocals are braided with the fast pulsing rhythm of Dominican dembow singer El Alfa and City Girls’ JT’s sharp rap.

Living between Virginia and Colombia, Uchis first garnered attention with her mixtape Drunken Bubble in 2012, which she wrote and recorded on her laptop the night before uploading it to DatPiff. Despite her inmigrant’s family condemning her career choice, she’s since become a Billboard Latin Music Award winner, toured all over the world, and collaborated with major artists like SZA, Gorillaz, Jorja Smith, Diplo, Major Lazer, and Snoop Dogg. Her festival sets always gather devoted throngs, everywhere from Tropicalia and Governors Ball to Austin City Limits, and Lollapalooza. Uchis’ Coachella headlining show this April was even one of the event’s top-billed performances.

Uchis loves to explore the diaspora and female archetypes she was raised with through her art. In a blend of Spanish and English, the singer constantly reconceptualising what it means to be a Latinx woman through spirituality and stereotypes. Whether it’s via deities like Isis and Aphrodite or characters like the red-lipped femme fatale and the innocent woodland fairy, her transcending sound inspires us to embrace our divine femininity. Adventurous Sagittarius who love the witty and tongue-in-cheek need to listen to MM FOOD… (2004) – a concept album “about the things you find on a picnic, or at a picnic table”. Undoubtedly those who haven’t listened to MF Doom yet will still be familiar with the TikTok-adored tracks ‘Hoe Cakes’ and ‘Rap Snitch Knishes’.

Capricorn

22^nd December – 19^th January

The overachieving, persistent, and sensitive Capricorn will feel inspired by many of the themes on Little Simz’s Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (2021). On this ambitious album Little Simz tackles the injustices black people face to this day, the government’s corruption, as well as her own insecurities, hopes, and dreams, and praises women and other strong people of colour. It’s a bold album that at times is triumphant with Simz’s lyrics surrounded by uplifting fanfare and in other moments more vulnerable and reflective. Either way, it’s an empowering hip hop album full of smooth melodies that will motivate Cancer in whatever endeavours they’re pursuing.

Aquarius

20^th January – 18^th February

Miley Cyrus has always been original and one step ahead of the trends throughout her career – she wowed us as Hannah Montana, reinvented herself with ‘Wrecking Ball’, gave us all the rocker glam with ‘Midnight Sky’, and her new album Endless Summer Vacation (2023) will be the ideal summer soundtrack for Aquarius. Clever, self-reliant, and creative, Aquarius embody many of the traits Miley stands for. You’ll be obsessed with Miley’s spunky new tracks like ‘Handstand’, ‘River’, and ‘Rose Colored Lenses’.

Pisces

19^th February – 20^th March

Synthpop duo Magdalena Bay shook up the music world in 2021 with their futuristic debut album Mercurial World (2021). Its surreal cyber sound sucks the listener into a pink-tinted electronic world – the whole album sounds like if an MS Paint drawing of a unicorn could sing. Mercurial World will appeal to whimsical Pisces with their love for daydreaming. Hypnotic and melodic, lose yourself to the airy ‘Dawning of the Season’ and dance yourself stupid to ‘Hysterical Us’.

Red Moon in Venus, the Colombian American singer and songwriter’s third studio album that was released on the 3^rd March, is a psychedelic R&B fused delight that wraps the listener in a hazy cloud. It ponders elegantly on the “burning expression of desire, heartbreak, faith, and honesty, reflecting the divine femininity of the moon and Venus” and at its core “love is the message” as Kali stated. With its warm sound and heated lyrics, Kali has created the perfect transitional soundtrack to usher in spring and Red Moon will be a go to for hot summer nights later this year.

We’re transported to a balmy eternally nocturnal garden as the album begins with the quiet chirping of crickets on the short intro ‘in My Garden…’. Kali seems to be speaking to her lover on the phone: “Hello/Can you hear me?/I just wanted to tell you, in case you forgot/I love you”. A bell chimes and we’re plunged into the first single from the album ‘I Wish You Roses’ setting the mood for soft glam with this chilled-out melancholic track. Kali expertly glides between heartbreak, visceral love, and nonchalance for her exs on the album. ‘I Wish You Roses’ falls into the first category with Kali seemingly having no bitterness over the breakup as she breathily whispers, “I wish you well” until the outro when she promises “You’re gonna want me back”. 

The third track features R&B singer Omar Apollo who is currently supporting SZA on her SOS tour. On the short but sweet, deeply sensual ‘Worth the Wait’ Kali notes the importance of balancing romance and sex in a healthy relationship. She says she’d rather wait because “Gotta be careful with my heart because I love deep” – she is a Cancer after all.

‘Love Between…’ uses an interpolation of The Tempress 1972 single ‘Love…Can Be So Wonderful’ but the bisexual icon alters the gender-specific chorus to “love between two human beings”. With light and echoey sparsely plucked guitars and Kali’s delicate croons giving the song a distinctly 70s lush sound.

‘All Mine’ is a standout on Red Moon. Kali’s head over heels for her partner and she delights in the fact that she solely can make them smile. In the super catchy triumphant chorus, she sings, “My baby makes me so proud, that’s all me”, and has us all grinning from ear to ear. Fittingly the next track begins with autotuned vocals from Kali’s boyfriend Don Toliver. ‘Fantasy’ is the perfect summer club track. It has a great beat but what stands out is the chorus: “On my body, don’t let go of me/I just want the fantasy/ I love it when you worship me” – Kali is giving goddess energy.

Next, the two bilingual tracks on the album come back-to-back. ‘Como Te Quiero Yo’ is a hypnotic sensual slow number in which Kali pleads with her lover to put the drama on hold and just make love to her. Whilst on the fabulous ‘Hasta Cuando’ she tells her jealous ex-lover and ex’s new girl to stay mad because she’s living the life of luxurious now. It features an amazing spoken word section with the most iconic memorable line: “At the end of the day, she’d eat my pussy if I let her”.

‘Endlessly’ is another standout. “It’s Valentine’s like, every day” sings Kali on this ultra-buoyant disco track full of funky guitars and twinkling synths. In juxtaposition, we take a half step into the dark with the nocturnal track ‘Moral Conscience’. A brooding sensation is created with the slightly dissonant synths and the singer’s promise to her ex “you’re gonna feel it/when you’re all alone”. Kali gives her best vocal performance on this song producing a gut-wrenching head turning scream at the end of the first verse.

On the interlude ‘Not Too Late’ Kali’s stuck in limbo. She tells her lover “It’s not too late to admit you love me” whilst repetitive whirling synths create the sensation of being swallowed by quicksand. Thankful ‘Blue’ is here to break the spell. With the 90s R&B-inspired drumbeat and smooth sax it’s giving the height of drama. That chorus “What’s the point in all the pretty things in the world if I don’t have you” will stick with you. The best bit however is Kali’s cheeky background whispers “(I don’t wanna see you with nobody else, I just wanna love you, baby, all to myself)” adding a touch of witty humour to the blue song.

Manipulative exs beware – Summer Walker and Kali team up on ‘Deserve Me’ to tell them to “wise up”. Delivering crushing blows to Kali’s ex, the women show that they’re the ones with the power. Though the whole album is divine, ‘Moonlight’, the second single released from Red Moon, is still undoubtedly the best track. Dripping sex appeal Kali’s vocals paired with the stunningly rich production will make you melt. Bringing the album to a close with a breath of sweetness is ‘Happy Now’. Bubbly at the start, she asks her lover to “Promise you’ll take the stars out the sky/Make them all align just for us” before the track ends with a more ambient sound as Kali utters “peace of mine/gotta free my mind” as waves wash over the track.

The astrological theme paired with the silky production and Kali’s heavenly vocals gives this album a magical aura in which divine femininity rules over all. Even in her most vulnerable moments, like on ‘Blue’ and ‘Moral Conscience’, Kali radiates strength and honesty that shows she’s in control. Though according to mythology, a red moon is a bad omen forecasting misfortune or even the apocalypse in Christianity Kali Uchis seems to have overcome her troubles by the end of Red Moon in Venus and is on track for clear skies.

The Grammy-winning American-Colombian superstar returns with another taste of her new album Red Moon In Venus dropping an opulent track overflowing with hedonist desires: ‘Moonlight’. Ultra-buttery, blissful, and smoky, on the bilingual single Kali romantically yearns to get high with her lover serenading us in Spanish and English. The single was released on the 24^th February but fans heard a sneak peek of the track when it was teased by Kali on her TikTok account back in November. 

It’s the second single from Red Moon in Venus which will drift between soul, R&B, pop, and música urbana according to the singer. On the album “Love is the message,” Uchis explains, “Red Moon In Venus is a timeless, burning expression of desire, heartbreak, faith, and honesty, reflecting the divine femininity of the moon and Venus. The moon and Venus work together to make key aspects of love and domestic life work well. This body of work represents all levels of love—releasing people with love, drawing love into your life and self-love. It’s believed by many astrologers that the blood moon can send your emotions into a spin, and that’s what I felt represented this body of work best”. Uchis reportedly went into the recording process intending to create an album that felt timeless, one that can be enjoyed any time and any place and will remain meaningful throughout the years to her and her fans. You can hear this fiery yet soft LP on 3^rd March.

In an interview with Pitchfork Kali spilled that the 15-track album includes a couple of Spanish-language tracks, but that they are “conceptually and sonically” different from the songs on her next Spanish album she’s releasing later this year. “When I think of Red Moon in Venus, I think of being on a bike ride, or laying in the sun listening on my headphones,” she said. Her next album will be more upbeat exploring her “bitchier side” according to the artist. “Being multidimensional, there’s all these different sides of me that I need to show”.

The new track follows previous Red Moon In Venus offering the delicate and ethereal sad girl tune ‘I Wish You Roses’, which arrived alongside a dreamy rose-tinted video directed by Cho Gi-Seok.

Her US tour supported by RAYE starts in April and is already sold out – we’re hoping that UK and EU dates will be dropping close behind the release of the album. She’s also set to be playing a few festival dates this Summer including Coachella and Lollapalooza.

Raised between Virginia and Colombia, though it’s hard to believe now Kali Uchis was originally more interested in making films than being in the spotlight. Her 2012 debut mixtape Drunken Babble was praised for its genre-defying nature the singer having pulled influence from R&B, 50s doo-wop, and reggae. She caught widespread attention with her debut EP Por Vida in 2015, and even more fame followed with her 2018 debut album, Isolation. Uchis has collaborated and shared stages with SZA, Tyler the Creator, Gorillaz, Jorja Smith, Diplo, Major Lazer, Snoop Dogg, Kaytranada, Leon Bridges, and boyfriend Don Toliver. Last year, Uchis achieved more success winning three Billboard Latin Awards, two Billboard Music Awards and an American Music Award.

Kali Uchis on ‘I Wish You Roses’

The release comes shortly after Kali was announced as a performer at Coachella this April, where she will take to the stage ahead of Rosalia and Bjork on the festival’s closing night.

The music video, directed by Cho Gi-Seok, is romantic and ethereal. The floral-inspired video has both a natural and fantastical feel to it as we see Kali both surrounded by and encompassing nature. It shows Kali lying in fields of roses, being rained on by petals and imitating flowers with her makeup looks. One thing to be noted about this music video, which is visually outstanding, is that the styling is impeccable. Kali Uchis is always doing something interesting with her style and we can always rely on her serve a look on every occasion, and this music video is no exception.

Let’s just start with the cover art for the single. This vibrant image features one of the looks from the music video for which Kali was painted by makeup artist Oh Seong Seok. The merging of Kali’s body paint with the projection of a rose accurately depicts the delicate nature of humanity, a theme that is particularly prominent in this song and through the music video’s styling.

The music video opens with some of the most intricately detailed beauty looks you can imagine, from orchid inspired lipstick to petals used as false eyelashes, the nature-inspired makeup looks were imaginative and captivating. The floral inspired vision was perfectly executed by makeup artist Ivan Núñez who utilised vibrant colours and a variety of textures, including jewels and that resembled drops of dew, to achieve the finished looks.

We are then transported to a field of roses where we find Kali lying amongst the petals and thorns in a custom mawar dress from Veldon Salim. This look yet again ties in with the theme of delicacy that is prominent throughout the music video. The fine fabric of the dress juxtaposes the thorns surrounding it, emphasising the beauty of fragility, while the romantic silhouette recentres one of the most delicate of human emotions, love.

Potentially the best look in the music video was the flamboyant red dress that was made from a structured mesh in order to replicate the shape of a rose. The star of this look is the delicate floral headpiece by Gabe Sin which frames the face with layers of vibrant red flowers. There was not a stone in this look left unturned with absolutely everything you can think of being considered and accounted for; the look even featured a vine-inspired detail wrapping around Kali’s legs as if they were the roots of a plant, a detail that truly speaks to how much thought has gone into these looks.

The video closes with Kali falling asleep in closing flower wearing a sparkling floral busier and short set. This brings a beautiful end to the floral themed outfits with a romantic and delicate look that emphasises the beauty in vulnerability that the song speaks of.

In 2018, American-Columbian artist, Kali Uchis was nominated for her first Grammy in the category of Best Dance and R&B Performance, unfortunately, she lost to Bruno Mars. Making a cool comeback at the 2021 Grammy Awards with a win for Best Dance Recording. The song ‘10%’ by Kaytranada featuring Kali Uchis is the tune that’ll be playing on a constant loop as soon as the clubs reopen.

Kali’s new hit song; ‘Telepatia’ is a light and ethereal tune with meaningful lyrics transitioning between both Spanish and English, always embracing her heritage. The song is growing in popularity and increasingly circulating the TikTok scene. As a result, Kali posted her own TikTok revealing the reason she believes the song connects to such a huge audience. As an artist she created her music with the intention to release serotonin for people. The meaning behind the lyrics stem from deep spirituality, expressing her raw emotions through a story of her connection to someone she could not physically be with. This emotion she felt was emulated within her music, so much so, she believes her song sends telepathic healing energy to anyone who listens. This aspect of her music makes the audience form an intimate connection with Kali through her artistry.

The newly Grammy winner took to Instagram to celebrate her success, posting a Facetime video of her live reaction shared with Kaytranada, as well as a couple of studio shoot photos. It is clear that her talents as an artist go beyond musical genius and to extend to a style guru. This fire outfit she posted consisted of a cut out, black and nude piece. The the use of contrasting bold lines to outline her figure looks so sharp and chic, almost as if it is painted onto her skin. Her outfit flows beautifully along the natural curves of her body, every detail from her gloves to her shoes play a crucial role to execute this artistic form of fashion.

In previous interviews Kali has stated both her style and music do not follow trends, for Kali, a big part of being an artist is the innovation of trends, and wearing what you want. She avoids keeping up and following others for the sake of staying current. It is an admirable and inspiring mind-set that she adopts and her musical success has stemmed from this persistence to stay true to herself. Backing her own taste and aesthetics plays a huge role in Kali’s career; for example, she styles her own photo-shoots and directs her own music videos. It is refreshing to see the artist take control of all elements surrounding her image. This confidence is emulated through her fashion; in turn she is becoming a style icon with her unique and individualistic choices. Even in her school years, Kali enjoyed thrifting and up-cycling clothes to make her own stamp on them; she had her own real-life depop-esque shop, where she would sell her re-vamped charity shop finds from the boot of her car.
