AREA Collection: Exploring The Interplay Of Eyes, Cut-Outs And Embellishments

At the recent AREA fashion show, designers Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk redefined contemporary glamour with their bold silhouettes and innovative use of embellishments.

At the recent Coach fashion show, the motif of bows emerged as a charming and consistent theme, woven throughout the collection with a sense of playfulness and nostalgia. 

The bow, a symbol often associated with femininity and whimsy, was woven into the designs in a manner that balanced sweetness with sophistication. Carolina Herrera: Flower Power

One of the dresses featured was a magnificent bloom of pastel peonies on a blush pink canvas. The gown’s voluminous skirt and fitted bodice allowed the floral print to take centre stage. The delicate balance between the grand silhouette and the softness of the floral print encapsulated Carolina Herrera’s signature style, infusing grandeur with grace.

Another gown, in deep purple colour, covered with layers of ruffles adorned with lighter floral prints, created a sense of movement and lightness. Ludovic de Saint Sernin: Metal Mesh And Crystal Mesh Materiels Grace The Runway

Metal mesh and crystal mesh dominated the Ludovic de Saint Sernin fashion show, demonstrating the designer’s innovative power and exceptional ability of merging textures and shapes. These materials, both flexible and fluid, hugged the body to reveal and conceal.

Altuzarra Ready To Wear FW Collection – Mix And Match Prints

Altuzarra’s Ready-to-Wear FW Collection made a bold statement on the runway with its masterful mix-and-match print moments, embracing a vibrant narrative of patterns. The juxtaposition of fiery reds and yellows with more subdued earthy tones creates visual tension, showcasing Altuzarra’s print mixing ability. 

One of the looks is a dress consisting of stripes against a flowery explosion, playing with the concepts of order and chaos. The fluidity of the skirt’s print softens the top’s dramatic stripes, resulting in an ensemble that is both a piece of art and a fashion statement. 

Another look is a jumpsuit with a coherent blend of organic and geometric elements. The pattern change does not disrupt the flow of the garment, demonstrating how clashing prints may work together to produce a single, flowing piece that is both dynamic and elegant. 

Although Altuzarra’s collection was generally more casual ready to wear looks, these garments were the highlight of the show. the vibrant exploration of print on print demonstrates the combination of unexpected patterns to create outfits that are both unique and unforgettable.

This year’s New York Fashion Week hasn’t been like the others. With all the problems the pandemic has caused, the designers were left with a rather harsh question to answer with their new projects: what do you wear when the world is falling apart?From September the 11th until the 16th, during only the last 4 days, designers had to plan their runway shows in respect of safety measures with either a Livestream or a socially distanced audience. Yet, they have managed to portray a colourful and hopeful world through the lens of fashion. Among the many incredible and creative Spring/Summer 2021 ready-to-wear collections, we selected the highlights of the fashion week.

Jason Wu

As the opening show of the NYFW, Jason Wu’s collection didn’t fail its expectations. Set against a tropical background, the theme of the collection was an imaginative holiday in Tulum, Mexico. Surrounded by tropical plants, the designer showcased his bright and warm maxi dresses and suiting in bold accents of yellow, blue and orange. The garments feature different patterns: from vertical stripes to multidimensional flowers which highlight the silhouettes in bulky trousers and jumpsuits. Innovative is the use of a bra top above the flowy dresses.

Jason Wu | Spring/Summer 2021 | NYFW

Rodarte

Aimed at comfort, Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s new collection reflects a dreamy and fancy reality to emphasise the importance of making fashion during these trying times. Characterized by a bridal theme, the collection offers a tribute to the ‘40s dresses style with floral prints, handkerchief-like motifs and pastel shades. The comfort

resides in most of the garments with pyjama sets, soft track pants, silk sweatshirts, twill trousers and midi-skirts. Everything is then topped off with tulle or silk floral wreaths, bobby socks and lace gloves.

Christian Siriano

From the backyard of his home in Westport, Siriano presented his new glamorous collection to a socially distanced audience. Inspired by his childhood favourite films – which he binge-watched during quarantine time – the collection features a multitude of bikini tops, frocks, bulky ball skirts and patterned suits, all styled with Sarah Jessica Parker’s high heels line. The palette balanced neutral colours like black and white with more vivid ones, such as pink and red. While also spreading a relevant message with a dress covered in ‘Vote’ quotes, the designer retained his signature style with pronounced shoulder frocks, flamenco ruffles and winged sleeves. The highlight of the show was the red closing look worn by Coco Rocha who, willingly, stepped into the pool to gift the audience a wow-moment.

Tom Ford

Longing for an escape from the seriousness of this world, Tom Ford opted for an optimistic collection which, as he puts it, ‘will make you smile’. Inspired by a documentary about the fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez, the designs are what you can expect from a fun collection: patterned silky pyjamas, bikinis, knit maxi dresses and vivid logo leisure sets. Throughout the garments, there’s a predominance of animal and floral prints, styled with eccentric accessories.

Zimmermann

Last but not least, Nicky Zimmermann showcased her ‘Wild Botanica’ collection inspired by her home country, Australia. From the title itself, we can understand that the collection is strongly influenced by the Australian flora and fauna: the garments feature, for instance, the prints of a botanical illustrator, Ellis Rowan, which depicts different kinds of flowers and birds. Each piece presents a unique feature: from lace crop tops and soft suitings to colourful puff dresses, linen trousers and Bermuda shorts. The simple but detailed silhouettes enhance the effect of the prints which make each garment easy to spot, even at a socially-distant range. The mixture of bold and bright prints makes the collection very feminine and soft, without the risk of being childish.

If you thought winged eyeliner was hard, well you’re in for a treat. Yes, this beauty trend kind of looks like it came straight out of a Picasso, but its 2020. The start of a new decade. I think we deserve to be a little daring, right? At one point it was all about the neutrals. That classic ‘no makeup make-up look’ with flawless foundation, faux freckles and perfectly flushed cheeks. Well, now we are brave. We are bold and we ready to press the refresh button on a classic vintage beauty look.

Introducing the “Floating Liner”. The what, you say? If you don’t know what that is, let me fill you in. The idea is to take your usual eyeliner pen and draw a graphic curved line in between your crease and your eyebrow. It’s not quite the same as a cut crease, which is blended into your eyeshadow, and it’s not winged eyeliner, which is sitting on your lash line. This bad boy is sat right in the centre of your lid. Waiting for the whole world to see.

I know it looks scary. I know it looks just as hard, if not harder, than attempting winged liner. Trust me, I get you. I know that exact feeling when you have mastered one eye and just don’t have the courage to move onto the next. All in fear that they will look completely uneven. Well, don’t you worry. Practice makes perfect and with this eye look you can forget about the eyeshadow. All you need is a bold eyeliner, something like the Kat Von D ‘Tattoo Liner’, and just a touch of gumption. You’ve got this.

It’s that perfect balance between simplistic and daring. Bold yet timid. It allows us to experiment again with our makeup and to let our inner child shine through. Makeup artists have put down the black’s and brown’s and are bringing back the pastels and fluorescents. If you’re going all out with your liner, you might as well take it all the way and add a pop of colour with a fuchsia pink or jet blue. Yes, I know, did someone say 60’s? I am getting serious Twiggy vibes right now.

Yes, it’s wild. Yes, it’s a bit crazy. No, you may not want to wear it on a late-night run to the shops. But I think we are all slightly mad about it. It adds that perfect little something to turn your makeup into a work of art that will get heads turning your way. And with the festival season closely approaching, it gives you just enough time to perfect your craft.
