Let’s not lie, we’ve all had a chop at our hair at least once in our lives, probably more times than we would like to admit, but according to Frederic, there is an easy way that we can achieve a fringe at home without the stress that normally comes with a DIY hair project.  

Fringes are a staple part of fashion and beauty; they are timeless and always popular during the colder months when we want to rock a cosy chic style and use our hair more to express ourselves. So, with Frederic’s help, maybe we can achieve a chic new fringe this winter.  

Talking to Voir, Frederic explains to us that when thinking about cutting yourself some killer bangs, you should always start with wet hair and section your hair correctly. To do this, start by gathering your hair into a triangle shape so that it is separate from the area of hair that you’ll be cutting.  

The next important thing to do is to decide how short or long you want your fringe to be. The length can depend on the style you are after or a look you are mimicking, but a general rule of thumb that you should follow according to Frederic is to start at your eye level or a bit longer.  

Why a bit longer we hear you ask? Well that’s to help you out if you run into difficulty and either regret what you’ve cut or realise that you do want to go shorter. When you leave it long you can go back and cut it shorter, but if you go full streams ahead and go too short to begin with you cannot undo that as easily.  

Once you’ve got the length you want, the potentially stressful part begins, but don’t let the thought of cutting your hair intimidate you! Frederic encourages you to cut your hair vertically which will add softness and movement to the fringe, it is a good idea to start in the middle of the fringe and work your way out when cutting.  

Brace yourselves, here comes the mistake we’ve probably made in previous attempts when we’ve tried to give ourselves a new fringe, don’t cut it horizontally! When you cut your fringe horizontally it doesn’t fall the same and can potentially look clumpy and too choppy. 

When you cut your fringe vertically, however, according to Frederic it keeps its shape better. Frederic also advises that you should try and keep your fringe longer on the sides and shorter in the middle to create a feathering effect and to make it softer on the face. 

Another top tip Frederic has for us is to acquire a stylist razor over scissors when attempting an at-home cut. Frederic says that a razor is much more forgiving and creates the feathery softness that you’ll want in a fringe.

So, in your arsenal make sure you have the key components; a razor, a round brush and a blow dryer. The round brush and blow dryer will come in handy when styling the fresh new cut and help achieve that bombshell blowout look by blow drying the bangs upwards. A hair dryer brush may be a good alternative to the blow dryer if you struggle to balance both a brush and hair dryer while blow drying your hair.

Don’t panic if you get a little scissor happy, we’ve all been there! Simply allow your hair to grow out and book an appointment with a trusty hair stylist asap and they’ll sort out any issues you may have found yourself in. Also, a good hack to keep in mind if you’re not feeling the fringe or if you’re not happy with how it turned out is to pin your hair up or hook it behind your ears.
