Spring 2020 saw the beauty giant select 16 hand-picked businesses and offer advisory support and loans ranging from $10,000- $50,000 to boost equality, inclusion, and representation in the beauty world. Riding on the resounding success of the last year, a whole new batch of beauty entrepreneurs can have a chance to grow with one of the biggest beauty brands in the game.

This year, there will be 10 winning businesses that will each receive a grant of $50,000, 6 months worth of business guidance and 1:1 support from the Glossier team. Looking for promising beauty brands that produce and sell products for the face, body and hair – Glossier is dedicated to driving inclusivity in the beauty world.

Writing on their website, CEO and Founder Emily Weiss said: “Our mission is to inspire everyone to find joy and confidence in their personal beauty style, and to achieve that, we’re building a new kind of beauty company: one that empowers people to be their own beauty expert. We’re also energized by the opportunity to play a role in democratizing and diversifying the beauty ecosystem more broadly, which starts with supporting the next generation of beauty startups and entrepreneurs through initiatives like our Grant Program.“

Applications for the 2021 programme open on the 27th of May and details of how to apply are on the Glossier website.

If you’re not quite ready to jump back into the time-consuming full face glam, these looks will pair beautifully with a face-mask and a 10-minute ‘get ready’ window. Especially, in the sweltering heat, it’s all about the eyes. So, here’s a list of 5 takes on iconic eye looks to refresh your post-lockdown make-up routine and to keep that creativity blossoming.

The Marilyn Wing

Marilyn’s iconic image is, of course, her red lipstick – but her classic winged liner is nothing to be underestimated. Her make-up artist, Allan “Whitey” Snyder, used Vaseline on her eyelids for a dewy effect, and to make her eyeshadow appear more pigmented. This created the perfect base for a thick swoop of liner and a half strip of lashes on her outer corners. Our retake of this is a bit simpler: keeping that classic winged liner, and the rest of the lid bare – bar some Vaseline for some extra shine if you wanted!

A Wash of Colour

Our next iconic look is as simple as it sounds – take a colour and sweep it evenly over the lid. For a more intense effect, you can choose a liquid eyeshadow, or use an eye primer. From a rosy glow to an intense matte copper wash – this look will only take moments to achieve but gives you an effortless look all day.

The Neutral Flick

For a softer take on the winged liner – swap out your black liquid liner for a neutral alternative. This can be achieved with an eyeliner – liquid, gel or pencil, a liquid eyeshadow, or even a liquid lipstick – just pop a bit on a brush and sweep out your wing. Elongating your lash line without any harsh tones, this is beautiful for a natural, glowing look – night or day!

Pop of Colour

For those days when you are truly pushed for time but don’t want to compromise on style – pop some colour into your inner corners. No brush necessary – just take some eyeshadow, matte or shimmery, on your finger and dab it into your inner corners. This will really make your eyes pop while staying subtle enough for every day – it’s only a small amount so you have the freedom to play around with different colours.

The humble tank top; the versatile sleeveless staple that can so effortlessly take us from the gym to the shops, to a night out (obviously with a wash and a few styling tweaks in-between- but you get the point!). In the current climate, shopping is now a distant happy, memory and nights out are the things of dreams.

Though many of the world’s dedicated lovers of fashion might currently be feeling slightly distraught; all this time to think about and plan outfits down to the very last detail – and literally NOWHERE to go. It shouldn’t stop us at least trying, even if it is only for a 20-minute chat with the head of the department. Which, at the minute, along with (if you’re feeling particularly extra) a boozy skype night with the girls, is the only thing we have to get vaguely somewhere close to dress for.

It seems almost pointless to don an outfit head to toe when from the waist down, you are invisible to those on the other end of the video call. Plus, no matter how much you live and breathe fashion, being at home for these extended periods of time, comfort is essential.

When it comes to my appearance, I am the human personification of the phrase ‘all or nothing’. I’m either going out, (to work, for drinks, to shop) done to the nines- full outfit meticulously planned, with hair that ties the whole look together, and face contoured and highlighted to high heaven. Or, I’m staying at home, only leaving the confinements of my house to pop to Tesco in a hoodie 12 sizes too big for me, hair in that scruffy half up half down bun that comes hand in hand with being at home, and more often than not (depending on whether my skin has decided to break out), the whole ‘minimal effort’ look is topped off with a charcoal face mask.

Whilst I may have just unnecessarily outed myself, as the rest of you read this sexily lounging on your chaise lounge in your silky robes, with glamorous rollers pinned over your heads sipping champers, I can almost guarantee, (based on the evidence I have gathered from friends and colleagues) that I am the reality for at least 80% of you.

I’ll be the first to admit it, this whole being at home 24/7 is a struggle for an ‘all or nothing’ girl like me. Whilst I can quite easily nail the ‘nothing’ side of me (-literally roll out of bed, et voilà!), the ‘all’ side of me is really suffering. As much as I enjoy piecing outfits together, putting a face of makeup on and doing my hair, I just feel unnatural, uncomfortable and slightly strange sitting at my desk in my bedroom in my heeled boots, skirt and shirt combo, with my face and hair looking like I’m ready to hit the club. However, Issues also arise when you have the daily skype meetings with your boss- the mad rush to scrub the mask off your face, brush your hair and swap your hoodie for a slightly smarter top, as you try and maintain the image that you are not falling apart.

Whilst you can’t change a leopard’s spots, and in normal circumstances, I would look at people who get dressed to sit at home in confusion and slight disgust, it is clear that these unprecedented times call for unprecedented action. An elite group of products so perfected, so timeless and so ingrained in our beauty regimes, there is no other option – not even a hint of contemplation – when we root in our makeup bags for that guaranteed staple. Some even pioneers in their product categories, these are the items we’ve squeezed dry until not one drop is left, cut up when empty for every scrap and repurchased time and time again. Quite frankly, these are the products we pray so heavily never become discontinued because nobody does it like they do. If you’re looking for cult beauty items that have changed the game then look no further.

GLOSSIER BOY BROW

Eyebrows were most definitely the star of the show this decade and could you think of a more apt product to pinpoint a brow revolution? Whilst an honourable mention must be given to Benefit’s Gimmie Brow for pioneering the brow gel bonanza that took the beauty world by storm, Glossier came through with something else. It’s long-lasting, simplistic, holds a great formula and has what I believe to be a decent shade range too. It accentuates each individual hair and despite obviously making you look put together, the mere action of combing through your brows definitely makes you feel better too. Brow self-care at its finest.

YSL TOUCHE ECLAT

In 2015, The Telegraph stated that one of these ‘golden pens’ was sold every 10 seconds. Amazing. Coined to be much more than just a concealer pen which of course are much more common now than they perhaps were when this product made its breakthrough, it is an illuminating yet covering pen. A firm favourite of makeup-artists and people keen for a quick-fix, innovative utensil and product in one, that can transform dullness and dark circles. Long live this iconic product and its multiple shades.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY PILLOW TALK LIPSTICK

A nude to end all nudes. Forget everything else you know and stop clutching your MAC Velvet Teddy so hard, there’s a new girl in town. Don’t believe me? Try for yourself and be amazed.

CHANEL SOLEIL TAN DE CHANEL

Okay so first thing’s first, it’s not cheap. Priced at £40, this cream-gel bronzer, not to be mistaken with contour, is the epitome of luxury. I believe this item finds itself somewhere between the likes of a KKW contour stick and a Benefit Hoola bronzer. It’s like powder meets liquid and forms an easy-to-apply balm that is buildable, soft and moisturising. Best applied with a brush or sponge, I find Soleil de Tan gives the skin a warm, peachy sun-kissed glow that genuinely looks believable. It’s not going to give you contoured realness, nor is it going to give you heaps of colour on first application, but with buildable control, it can be incredibly flattering and long-lasting. My only niggle? One shade. That’s it. Brilliant if you have light to medium skin tones but I can only guess it’s not going to show on medium to deep skin. Disappointing, but this product would rock if more shades were to be produced. After all, it’s one of a kind and I am yet to find anything like it. Did I mention it literally lasts forever?

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR

Trustier than your mum’s emergency umbrella, this full-coverage foundation will seal away a multitude of sins. Whilst I have always shied away from such thick, no-going-back, high coverage foundations and concealers, this is a brand of foundation that I have heard pop up time and time again from people of all generations. I believe it is great for those with discolouration who seek a long-lasting formula. Not a fan of the flawlessly finessed look? Try Double Wear Light for a more sheer finish.

BEAUTY BLENDER

Although I don’t think the makeup sponge age can exactly be called revolutionary, seeing as makeup artists and drag artists have been using them for years, there is no doubt that the infiltration of the original beauty blender into mainstream makeup is incomparable to another beauty tool I know. Behold, the beauty blender. Perfectly round, spongey and absorbent too. Almost guaranteed to feature in all of your friend’s makeup bags, this is exactly the sort of cult product that we will see for years to come – just look at the sea of dupes out there to prove it.
