Willy Chavarria: A Bold Political Statement

Willy Chavarria’s show was one of the most talked-about events of NYFW. Known for his streetwear with a social conscience, Chavarria continued to explore themes of cultural identity, inclusion, and activism.Chavarria chose a disused bank on New York’s Wall Street, a potent symbol of American power and wealth, to present his latest collection, titled ‘América’.

Standout Looks: The Spring/Summer 2025 collection featured oversized silhouettes, sharp tailoring, and powerful statements through graphic prints and slogans. With a very utilitarian, sportswear theme to the collection, looks consisted of cargo trousers, pockets, keys attached to belt loops, sports jackets, and Adidas logos. One of the standout pieces was a pair of voluminous black trousers, worn with a black sports jersey, and powerful, white shirt collar peeking over the top, delivering a strong message of empowerment and an ode to the theme of Americana and the mix of sportswear and formal wear. Another notable look was a long, sheer dress with frills as the sleeves and collar, a simple yet elegant look, made more striking when modelled on a male model down the runway.

Kim Shui: A Fusion Of East And West

Christian Cowen: A Modern Whodunnit

Christian Cowan’s Spring 2025 Ready-to-Wear collection was a showstopper at New York Fashion Week, bringing his signature flair for drama, fun, and unapologetic glamour to the runway. Cowan opted for black, silver, and cobalt blue palette, showcasing some powerhouse tailoring and creativity with different materials and cutouts.

Standout Looks: Looking at Cowan’s flare for tailoring, one of the standout looks offered a black, satin, 3-piece suit, consisting of a long-line blazer with exaggerated white cuffs, straight-leg trousers, and a lacey, micro-bralette – adding a touch of the feminine to an otherwise masculine ensemble. Another look we saw grace the runway was a satin, cobalt suit, with a cravat and metal rose fastening the suit – a detail that Cowan himself chose to wear during his appearance at the end of the show.

For Spring 2025, Coach creative director Stuart Vevers delivered a collection that beautifully blended the brand’s heritage with a fresh, modern twist. Standout Looks: One of materials we saw frequently used in the Coach show was brown leather, an ode to the 1940’s US army uniform. The utilitarian look cropped up throughout the runway, seen in jackets, skirts, trousers, and blazers. Even the classic aviator-style jacket was seen, paired with a satin, brown dress. Again, with a strong reference of Americana, we saw denim flood the Coach show, with classic denim jackets, high-cut jeans, even paired together in a y2k-inspired double denim look!

Founded in 2019 by long-time friends Stephanie Gundelach and Awa Malina Stelter, OpéraSPORT forms the perfect bridge between Paris and Copenhagen to expertly marry timeless elegance and sleek activewear.

At Copenhagen 2024, OpéraSPORT have achieved a beautiful blend of two iconic cities, encompassing Paris’ sophisticated and feminine demeanour with Copenhagen’s athletic and practical style, giving each look that perfect je ne sais quoi. OpéraSPORT’s use of silk in particular expertly utilises the material’s natural shine to blend an association between high-class fabrics and Lycra active wear.

Sinéad O’Dwyer

Winner of the 2024 Zalando Visionary Award, Sinéad O’Dwyer is a forerunner in the integration of the feminine and the tough to expertly curate an elegant yet almost industrial design.

However, its O’Dwyer’s unique take on the human body itself that sets her apart from the crowd. “Diverse bodies are at the core of their design process, from research and development to the final product. This passion and care for the human body in all its iterations and their radical approach to design, sampling and production is what makes them unique” reads the brochure for SS25 at Copenhagen Fashion Week. O’Dwyer manages to almost make the clothes secondary to the model, instead showcasing the beauty of the human form first and foremost in a celebration of natural curves and beauty Aphrodite would be proud of.

To do this, the pieces are subtle and carefully designed to not overwhelm the model, but instead accentuate form and colour by focussing on earth tones with highlights of a deep blue denim in a gorgeous homage to the Earth.

Frederik Berner Kühl is a fantastic up-and-coming talent diving into a traditional Scandi aesthetic with an elevated, modern approach that reads as sophisticated and cultured. Striving to convey his vision in ultimate materiality, Kühl focuses on grey-scale tones to allow his explorational textures and fabrics to speak for themselves, driving the pieces.

Creating menswear with a signature Danish sensibility, his SS25 runway showcased practical coats and jackets for next spring and summer, among expert layering to elude style and functionality.

Han Kjøbenhavn

Founded in 2008, style veteran Han Kjøbenhavn are still making waves through their innovative designs and daring shape work.

Focusing on shape in their work, the vision of Han Kjøbenhavn is bold and captivating silhouettes that captivate the audience and demand attention. Utilising dark and subdued colours not only provides an overarching grunge-feel to the collection, but really allows the avant-garde materials and structure to sing. However, these cutting-edge looks still remain reminiscent of the iconic Copenhagen, birthplace of Han Kjøbenhavn, with uncompromising craftmanship and attention to subtle details that the Danish do so well.

Leading Danish fashion house Baum Und Pferdgarten have been perfecting their practice since 1999. Where runway meets downtown, Baum Und Pferdgarten have mastered the art of inclusivity by designing captivating pieces that can be worn by anyone in an innovating streetwear collective.

An athletic undertone runs through their SS25 collection through the incorporation of stripes, jerseys, football accessories, and baseball caps in an effortless nod to a vintage style while remaining rooted in the contemporary. Even before the show was cancelled, views had dropped by over half from 6.7m 2016 to 3.3m 2018, and the brand was receiving a lot of backlash for its choice of models, ad campaigns, and social media. Victoria’s Secret’s ad campaigns came under fire from consumers when they appeared to be promoting an ideal body type. This especially offended the younger generation, who didn’t appreciate the hyper-sexual advertisements promoting conventionally attractive and often Eurocentric features in an attempt to appeal to the male gaze; petitions to change from their future customers doesn’t exactly make a brand look good.

Other brands showed VS up by recreating their campaigns with more diverse models, such as JD
William’s ‘#PerfectlyImperfect’ campaign and Lane Bryant’s ‘#ImNoAngel’, both featuring plus size
models.

As it failed to adapt to changing consumer demands, the show was compared to Rihanna’s highly successful Savage X Fenty fashion show, which featured plus-size models, people of colour, LGBTQ+ models, amputees, and pregnant women. One Twitter user described the VS fashion show as “the Super Bowl of bulimia.” As if this wasn’t enough controversy, sizeist and transphobic comments from L Brands CEO Les Wexner, a close friend of Jeffrey Epstein, were the last nail in Victoria’s Secret’s coffin.

The brand attempted to revamp its image by having a complete overhaul in 2021, with creative director Ruel Martinez telling WWD that the “world has changed.” In 2022, VS’ website claimed they were “committed to inspiring women around the world with products and experiences that uplift and champion them on their journey while creating lifelong relationships and advocating for positive change.”

This change has involved partnerships with charities, corporate restructuring, and replacing the ‘angel’ supermodels with the ‘Victoria’s Secret Collective’. VS CFO Martin Waters told Entertainment Weekly that this would include women who are “famous for their achievements and not their proportions”, including trans model Valentina Sampaio and former refugee Adut Akech. Pop superstar and voice of the people, Lizzo, asked Twitter users the burning question, “Do the CEOs of these companies value true inclusivity? Or do they just value money?”

If the brands’ diverse collective and increased sizes are anything to go by, the fashion show ought to rival Savage X Fenty, whilst still bringing the glamour and style of the famous event.

Taking place at London’s Roundhouse until the 28th August, the production takes you through Jean Paul’s life and experience of 50 years of pop culture.

Named ‘Fashion’s enfant terrible’, Jean Paul has retained an expressive attitude to fashion and has never shied away from scandal – renowned for his provocative catwalk shows, creating Madonna’s iconic cone bra in 1990 and parading Naomi Campbell topless in 2002.

Much like Jean Paul’s queer approach to fashion, the show is eccentric, sexy, scandalous, funny, sassy and certainly unpredictable, featuring carnival-style, strip-tease and catwalk performances. Actors, dancers and circus artists take to the stage to play larger-than-life personalities in an explosion of colour to dive into the fashion icon’s creative mind – including crazy costumes, dancing teddy bears, nudity and Anna Wintour impersonations.

Performed like an unmissable party, Fashion Freak Show has an explosive playlist of hits that have inspired the artist throughout his life with tracks and live performances of disco and funk to pop and punk rock.

As author, director and costume designer, Jean Paul collaborated with actress, scriptwriter and director Tonie Marshall, who co-directs the show, and choreographer Marion Motin – known for her work with Madonna, Stromae and Christine and the Queens.

The production first premiered with an acclaimed run in Paris in 2019 at the legendary Folies Bergère and since has been updated and reimagined to be staged in London.

Set against the backdrop of a giant video wall, a key part of the production features clips of special guest stars including a number of Gaultier’s long-term, iconic supporters and friends such as Rossy de Palma and Catherine Deneuve.

The rumors of the show’s location were in everyone mouth’s for a while. A few hints on Instagram have raised the anticipation in addition to the countdown posts of the event.

The event hosted special guests such as Marc Jacobs, Kanye West, Megan Thee Stallion, Pharell Williams, Offset, and Frank Ocean. Balenciaga’s show happened on the actual trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange with the ringing of the opening bell. Demna Gvasalia brought to the runway alien-like models with full-face latex coverings, oversized tracksuits, and exaggerated silhouettes in the middle of a futurist Wall Street. The show was the perfect occasion to display the new collaboration with Adidas which is now available on Balenciaga.com ranging pieces from socks and accessories to Leather jackets.

This show was definitely a milestone event for the brand as it was Balenciaga’s first American show in 20 years, the last time Balenciaga showed in New York was in February 2003. An event that perfectly translates the boldness of the Georgian stylist, “New York, New York” was performed by Carey Mulligan in “Shame” movie and the show ended with New York Stock Exchange screens flickering.

Inside the temple of consumerism, Balenciaga has a clear message: money makes the world go round.

The brand also recently announced that they will begin to accept cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum online and at select stores. Hurry, it is only available until May 29^th!

Haute Couture Week ambassador Alexandra Pereira brought an innocent and easy look to the Alexander Vauthier show. Pereira’s monochromatic v- neck white suit allowed her miniature baby blue purse to steal the show. Posting on her Instagram, the entrepreneur named the look her ‘power suit for a power show’.

Yacine Harr, Snehal and Jyoti Babani

The trio of fashion specialists brought eclectic and modern energy to Chanel’s audience. Sisters Snehal and Jyoti Babani matched contemporary graffiti style tees with elegant ballroom style skirts, accessorising with classic Chanel pearls which cascaded their waist and torso.
Yacine donned a smart and simple woollen cardigan over a white shirt. He styled the look with a leather Chanel body bag.

Gabrielle Caunesil

The classic all-black fits didn’t stop at Wang’s look. Also on her way to Vauthier’s magical show was the model and activist Gabrielle Caunesil sporting loose-fit black trousers with a belted cropped blazer. The true charm in Caunesil’s look was in the details; she paired the look with polka-dot lace gloves and an immense feathery tote, finishing her look with a traditional Parisian sultry red lip.

Chiara Ferragni

Sporting a structured green jacket and skirt combo, Chiara Ferragni was a vision of grace. The classy mother of two paired her look with a daring green eye, reminiscent of the fearless make-up which features HBO’s hit show Euphoria.

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie sat in the front row to witness Chanel’s spectacular equestrian-themed show in a classic Chanel-style oversized bright white blazer. Adding to the look, the actress paired white ankle boots and a miniature Chanel purse to create a clean cut appearance.

Leia Sfez

Creative consultant Leia Sfez added a fun twist to the classic Chanel tweed blazer. As she entered the Grand Palais Ephemere to watch Chanel’s enchanting show, her white blazer oozed in golden broaches in an array of fun shapes. Speaking of her fit’ on Instagram, Sfez deemed it the prettiest and heaviest jacket she had ever worn.

The show occurred outside of the bounds of recent fashion weeks, placing emphasis on McQueen’s connection to London as the place where his work began. Speaking to Vogue, Burton also explained skies as her source of inspiration for this collection, with previous campaigns referencing earth at the Thames riverbank. The sky acts as a source of sunshine and happiness, contrasting to the turbulence and unexpected turns the weather can take, which directly relates to the dichotomy often explored in Alexander McQueen shows.

A formal blazer dress, including leg of mutton sleeves and a deflated-style bustle attachment with draped ribbons, opened the show in the McQueen fashion of tradition and subversion. Burton’s personal influences were highlighted in inflated, cloud-like sleeves, and abstract blue and white prints resembling cloud formations. Soft colour palettes of pale blues, greys and whites blended naturally into the background tones of silver, glistening skyscrapers and the sunny skies of London. Some garments included direct prints of clouds, particularly this was most effective on a subtle, black swing dress with stark white clouds emerged from the bottom hem.

Considering nature as something we live alongside, Sarah Burton also shared her concern for peaceful interactions rather than human domination of the earth. By using chrome-free leather, upcycled fabrics and recycled polyester taffeta, McQueen took a step in the right direction to reconsider how our clothes impact the environment.

Structured, tailored suits juxtaposed tulle gowns in pastel yellow, white and bright pink. Similarly, contrasts were created through differing fabrics of leather, latex, tulle and chiffon coming together in a-line dresses. A series of black leather and blue denim looks were also impactful, incorporating multiple heavy fabrics to create strong, tailored silhouettes, accentuated with metal details like zips and belts.

A series of elaborate looks closed the shows, these included a blazer literally dripping in jewels (a reference to historic English monarchical portraits), mixtures of sheer chiffon with layers of fabrics fluttering in the wind, and finally three all-black looks with stark detailing of silver crystals. Naomi Campbell closed the show in a chic, cropped blazer with detailing above the hem of chunky crystals, paired with a full tulle skirt and tights layered with draped, dripping jewels.

Alexander McQueen’s show was attractive, chic and wearable – a practical exploration to make something as overwhelming as the sky digestible into individual looks. Unplanned storms and glimpses of sunshine could be seen throughout the collection, incorporating the whim of nature into the tailored, creative process of making garments at McQueen.

Within this live audience were many high-profile celebrities able to admire the magnificence of the surroundings as well as remaining eager to watch Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana deliver a spectacular show and as always they did not disappoint!

These stars arrived in style by boat, which included Doja Cat, JLO, Bebe Rexha, Normani, Ciara and many more. Jennifer Lopez attended the show making a fashion statement as she modelled a dazzling regal, floral print attire from the designers. Featuring metallic styled trousers paired with a jewelled top. This was framed by a floor-length cape in shades of turquoise and greens as well as a standout floral patten. The star posted a series of images on Instagram showing off her astounding ensemble in front of the backdrop of this romantic city capturing the glistening canals in the background.

These famous faces weren’t only included in the audience but also held a spot in the show as rapper P.Diddys daughters were seen walking the runway. As D’Lila stunned us with a sky-blue puffy lace dress followed by twin Jesse rocking a similar styled attire but featuring a colour palette of pinks and blacks. Diddys’ eldest daughter Chance was also co-ordinated with her sisters in an all-black mini skater style dress with a red bow cinching in her waist. These looks were showed off by Diddy on Instagram as his daughters stole the show.

The designers main aim was to present  a younger side of Alta Moda as they claimed, ‘everyone thinks couture is for the old but that’s not how it has to be’, which is what prompted them to use younger models. This included several other celebrities children alongside Diddy’s such as Heidi Klums daughter as well as Christian Bales.

As a whole the Alta Moda show set out to celebrate the local artisanship and the culture of  Venice as it did not only act as the location of this remarkable event, but it was also integrated into their collection. The models arrived in true Venice style by gondola and were met by a long red runway. That is when the true magic happened as the outfits they wore were visibly inspired by the serpentine patterns on the floor of St. Mark’s Cathedral along with the kaleidoscopic patterns of Murano glass. Accompanying the models down the runway was the classical Four Seasons concertos composed by Venice composer Antonio Vivaldi in the 18^th century.

There was also an emphasis on satin in the collection as it reflected the canals which wind their way round the city with their silk like appearance.

‘A hand-painted illusion tulle and double organza corset dress’ featuring venice scenes representing the city and its creative culture.

Emmeline Bale wearing a ‘unique Alta Moda illusion tulle corset dress embroidered with brooches, crystals, brocade, velvet, taffeta and hand painted organza flowers’. These components worked together to reflect the beauty of Italian craftsmanship.

The Alta Moda collection 2021 was rich with Italian culture and fulfilled its role of paying homage to the city and reflecting the fashion that Dolce and Gabbana are known for.

Creative Director, Jonathon Anderson innovates a compelling narrative to the Loewe Fall/ Winter 2021 collection. Enticing the audience with the striking headline ‘The Loewe Fashion show has been cancelled,’ he connects the collection to literacy; directly addressing the current challenges of pandemic life via the medium of a newspaper. Creating a narrative out of monochrome piles of
newspapers affords the opportunity for the pieces to conflict the scene, surfacing to prominence through their contrasting qualities. Vibrant colours and graphic prints, the collection encompasses an abstract and artistic take on fashion, inspiring individuality through empowering garments. One of the show’s highlights has to be the bracelet bag, offering a unique attraction towards a typically practical element. The collection as a whole, introduces new visions of shaping and construction, the colourful and futuristic spectacular make this collection lively and dynamic.

Chloé

Gabriella Hearst, the Creative Director at Chloé wanted the Fall/Winter collection to wholly emulate the luxury brand of Chloé, resembling joyfulness and femininity. This is achieved through the gorgeous broderie anglaise knitwear looks: a classic Chloé staple. When describing her vision for the AW21 collection, Hearst emphasises the importance of details within the luxury brand of Chloé. For example the ceramic buttons incorporated into the looks were designed and made within Paris, ensuring a sustained connection to the heart of the brand. Patchwork is a noticeable feature throughout the collection, expanding the brands dainty image to a street-wear vibe. The cape style coat makes an appearance within the collection but with an added twist. Evident within the shawl neckline, alternative textures of a shiny, metallic puffer coat appear; this adds a young and contemporary element to the capes.

Hermès and Isabel Marant

Models emerge from a landscape of Hermés’ renowned orange boxes. Hermés Autumn/Winter collection is kept simple with the cohesive use of materials, providing a textured theme of leather and denim looks. Taking a spin on the double denim look, Hermés uses dark, tailored denim pieces, dominating the outfits, giving an understated impression. The leather pieces provide, rich and
high quality feel towards the collection, its glossy glaze reflects light, giving the pieces more depth and structure.

Presenting 48 looks, Isabel Marant’s Fall 2021 collection offers a vast range of styles and aesthetics. Alike the Hermés collection, slinky leather fabrics are a common feature throughout. These looks have a metallic feel, shiny and glossy, it gives an almost wet look. Unlike Hermés, these
pieces are produced in vivid colours, giving the classic, smart material more energy and vibrancy.

Courrèges and Kristina Fidelskaya

The highlight of Courrèges collection has to be the bold accessorising. Starting with footwear, Courrèges collection is consistent in their inclusion of the thigh high boot. Established in an array of colours, Courrèges’ boots complete the outfits, acting as a fashionable substitute for tights. The attention to details throughout the accessories elevates the outfits to a higher level. The statement structured earrings add delicate and dainty details. The models rock sunglasses and baseball caps, seamlessly transitioning these typically summer staples into the colder seasons, working wonders for this chic and bold image.

Kristina Fidelskaya ‘BIBI’ autumn/winter collection also champions this emphasis on hats. The show is located in a sea of neutral tones, reflecting Kristina Fidelskaya beige, creams and camel colour scheme. The clothes are bright and light, similar to Courrèges summer inspired looks. Another similarity is the prominence of the headwear worn in most looks. Whether that is a baker-boy hat colour coordinated with the outfit ensemble or a cowboy hat coinciding with an on-theme trend of tassel emphasis, Kristina Fidelskaya styles these hats into the fall season effortlessly.

Alexandra Vaulthier

Alexandra Vaulthier’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection engages a masculine silhouette throughout the looks. This wide shouldered shaping is embellished through ruffles and dramatic sleeves, balancing the pieces with delicate detailing.This experimentation with the masculine and feminine is an interesting exploration seen throughout the collection, merging boundaries and challenging
classical silhouettes.

Coperni

Coperni’s fashion show really stopped traffic, located in a car park at night; the collection emerged from darkness, illuminated by car headlights. Coperni initiates slick and chic trends appropriate for future nights out in the city; with mini dresses as a key feature of the collection, Coperni is equipping us with gorgeous pieces for a sophisticated eveningwear look. A highlight of this collection has to be the iconic fur moments. Architecturally, the structuring of the coats are striking, they have so much volume and exuberate power and confidence, as well as looking super cosy. Layered over a slinky mini dress, these coats are perfect for Autumn Winter 2021. The colours Coperni’s primarily uses
are black and white staples underlined with pop neon accents, this fun element livens up the collection.

‘So, the question is, what do we actually wear?’ Last year, the year before, the year before that and so on and so on: our minds have forever rotated around the confines of expression, what to wear and how to wear it. On Thursday, in their A/W 2021 show, Rotate proposed an answer, revealing a collection which indulges in this question: a collection, said Jeanette Madsen, ‘about striking the balance between sexy and casual’, looks which simultaneously ‘stand out in a crowd’ and ‘feel comfortable’.

Staying true to their brand – big sleeves, bold hemlines, bright, textured glamour wear – Rotate’s collection showcased looks which dance on the line between daytime and night-time, presenting a catalogue of pieces which need not sacrifice style in order to achieve universality. Beyond speaking to Copenhagen’s efforts to work closer with sustainability, the duality of Rotate reintroduces us to the ideas rooted in Couture: showcasing the joy in experimenting with texture, colour and cuts. Our wardrobe, they seem to say, does not need to choose between wearability and impression, because it can be both.

Opening with a gorgeous tangerine look, we are instantly introduced to Rotate’s merge between striking colour and rich texture which we see throughout the show. The denim stands as a durable, everyday wardrobe stable whilst its brightness of colour and accompanying boucle coat whisper of the loud and sexy energy which Madsen spoke of. This combination is woven throughout the A/W 2021 collection in colour blocked pieces of seafoam green, deep violet, holographic snakeskin and watermelon pink. Together, these pieces are unstoppably eye-catching; in isolation, these pieces are gorgeous staples within the wardrobe.   

This is further embodied by the strikingness of prints: a leopard halter neck midi-dress; a zebra fishtail midi dress; a sequined gathered dress; a jacquard power suit; a crocodile textured jacket. The eye is overwhelmed with textures and patterns and prints whilst Rotate screams of the beauty in standing out.

Following their A/W 2021 show, we cannot wait to see what Rotate has in store for us and our future wardrobe!
