Those who have yet to hear of Isis Gaston, the 23-year-old rapper from NYC, will soon see her name popping up everywhere. She was featured on Vevo’s Artists to Watch in 2023 list and has already built a huge fanbase with 3M followers on Instagram and 2.7M on TikTok. She’s been likened to our fav rappers Saweetie and GloRilla by critics and has gained fans in the Weeknd who shared the track ‘Gangsta Boo’ on his story this week and Drake who played her single ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ in his Sirius XM radio station. She first gained attention when a video of her doing the “Buss It” challenge went viral on Twitter back in 2021 and she’s been climbing the rap ranks ever since bringing her unique flare with her.

Like… encapsulates the gen Z sound to its core. The songs are short and snappy with looped high-pitched instrumentals, popping drill bass, and an unwavering nonchalance in Ice’s vocals – it’s no surprise that she has gained fans in the chronically online youth as her tracks sound deeply TikTok-inspired. The songs even begin with a short skit (“Grrah/Stop playin’ with ’em, RIOT/Grrah”) that mimics the rapid buzz of noise like that of scrolling through TikTok. At 13 minutes long Like… may be brief but those beats are memorable.

Despite her modern sound Ice Spice’s influences include time-honoured artists Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Foxy Brown, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill demonstrating she is well-versed in the world of R&B and rap.

The singles on the EP are the snappy playful ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’, the Spongebob-esque ‘Bikini Bottom’, and the hip-mover ‘In Ha Mood’, all released in the last half of 2022. ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ was unsurprisingly a winner with the internet going viral on Twitter and TikTok as well as charting on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Bubbling Under Hot 100 charts.

A standout on the EP is fellow Bronx rapper Lil Tay’s collaboration with Ice on ‘Gangsta Boo’. His high-pitched fast-paced flow contrasts Ice Spice’s relaxed flow and deep vocals well. Ice Spice’s long-time collaborator RiotUSA, who produced the EP, sampled P. Diddy’s ‘I Need a Girl Part 2’ for the track creating an absolute earworm of a melody.

Ice Spice makes it clear she doesn’t care whether you like her or not with her ultra-cool relaxed attitude, which ironically is the reason we love her. Her lyrics express an aloofness as to what the haters think with her witty responses indicating she doesn’t take herself too seriously. In ‘Ha Mood’ she claps back at the haters who are jealous of her success, “Oh, she mad ’cause I’m takin’ her spot/If I was bitches, I’d hate me a lot”. She also hits back at internet trolls in ‘Bikini Bottom’ telling them, “I got two milli’ for usin’ a mic, bitch/Think about that when you type”. Ice compares herself with the much-loved Princess of Wales in ‘Princess Diana’ after a fan dubbed her “the modern-day Princess Diana” in a now-viral tweet suggesting she realises her own charm. In ‘Gangsta Boo’ Ice gets spicy singing “You got a gangsta vibe/ And I want a gangsta boo” in a chorus that won’t leave your head for days. Ice has her own lexis pool that we just want to dive into. She introduces us to the newest (and cutest) term for being a hoe in ‘Actin A Smoochie’ and that you just can’t help smiling at. Likewise, ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ brings the ladies the NYC-originating diss “munch” aimed at men that get a bit too cocky.

So far, two of the tracks from the Like… have music videos both of which display Ice Spice’s unique tongue-in-cheek spirit. ‘Bikini Bottom’ features Ice Spice partying with hotties and rapping with a wry smile in the corner of her mouth in front of a garish green screen as money flows down on her. It’s a bombardment on the eyes as the video jaggedly cuts from shot to shot – and we can’t look away. The video for ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ has a similar vibe with cartoon butterflies and graphics of the lyrics flying across the screen whilst Ice Spice chills with her friends on a basketball court making us wish we were bad enough to dance with the newly crowned princess of drill.

With her signature orange afro, glossy lips, and on-point style that mixes y2k-inspired belts and chains with skin-tight bright dresses and co-ords Ice Spice’s look is seamless. Her Instagram is full of a variety of looks that whilst different all convey Ice’s cohesive style. We’ve pieced together some pieces that will help you replicate Ice Spice’s baddie look.

Retro fire red Jordan 4s, light blue skinny jeans, and a cropped silver puffer make up the staples of this throwback fit reminiscent of some of Missy Elliott’s looks in the noughties. Add a chunky chain, half a dozen rings, and starred white XL square nails to complete the look.

Queen Bey took to the stage, opening with a cover of Etta James’ ‘At Last’ who Beyoncé portrayed in the 2008 biopic Cadillac Records, in a vibrant yellow gown by Omani designer Rayan Al Sulaimani for Atelier Zuhra. The gown was monochromatic but was broken up by a variety of textures including feathers and Atelier Zuhra’s trademark mosaic appliqué.

For her next look, Beyoncé changed into a rich red jumpsuit with a ballgown-esque train flowing from the waist and long sheer gloves that created a regal ensemble on the music royalty. The look came complete with an array of gold embellishments and a headpiece that resembled the sun, a crown, and a halo all at once. The majestic look was devised by Lebanese designer Nicolas Jebran who also dressed the star for the 2018 Grammy Awards.

Never one to shy away from a statement look, Beyoncé closed the show in a crystal encrusted baby pink minidress by Ukrainian designer Ivan Frolov. Frolov took to Instagram to share the proud moment, captioning the post:

“In my native country, the war that takes the lives of Ukrainians every day, destroys the fates and dreams of hundreds of thousands of people. And currently the only dream that inspires me and adds strength is the dream of Ukraine’s victory. Creating an image for Kyiv was one of my cherished dreams during the pre-war times, but it came true right now, in a time of difficult trials for my country, thanks to the hard and painstaking work of the selfless and creative, professional @frolovheart team, in different parts of the world and in our home @beyonce , under shelling, and sometimes without light.”

The look was intricately detailed and holds its own regardless of the circumstances under which it was made, but when you consider that it was designed and made in a war-torn country during blackouts, the true beauty of this look is emphasised by the hope and resilience that exists behind it.

In addition to her performance looks, Beyoncé took to the red carpet in a custom Dolce & Gabbana gown that placed her at centre stage. No other looks even compared. In a floor-length sparkling and sheer gold gown with a voluptuous train, Bey made the red carpet her own.

Starting off the list, and probably the most scandalous icon of all, is Lil Nas X, who publicly came out in 2019. Since then, he has explored fashion like no other, from exquisitely tailored colorful suits, to the most avant-garde and futuristic clothing. He broke the internet numerous times thanks to his eccentric and totally authentic style, and these are some of our favourites.

Breaking the entire online community and the Christian demographic, Lil Nas X’s Montero music video was certainly a much-needed breakthrough in the industry that we’ll remember. His outfits are simply extraordinary: from pole dancing into hell with black latex thigh highs to lap dancing for Satan, he has definitely broken the stigma around the expression of one’s sexuality within the gay community, and we cannot stop obsessing over his looks.

From many, the new rising star is truly on a league of her own. She’s definitely still underrated in the industry, as her work ethic and talent is insane. But she has built an avid list of followers that are obsessed with her every single move, and her outfits are no exception.

The singer Tinashe has definitely evolved her style massively and transformed into an icon. Her looks are mysterious, sexy, eccentric and her Instagram feed makes us all ecstatic. It had been long since we were so excited for an emerging artist, but Tinashe has definitely conquered our hearts!

MICA ARGANAZ

It come as no surprise how the model is Chanel’s and Simone Porte Jacquemus’ muse, her elegance is timeless, and the way she can pull off any outfit is truly spectacular to see.

BIMINI BON-BOULASH

The British drag queen has certainly stolen the spotlight after competing in Drag race UK. Her artistry shines through every single one of her looks, and we can’t stop watching.

RINA LIPA

Last but not least, Rina Lipa, the 19-year-old model has made an entry to the fashion scene. The good looks are in the family’s genes, along with a very fashionable style. She has already dominated Milan Fashion week, opening the new GCDS SS21 virtual runway show.

We’ve been relying on some good outfit inspo to cheer us up a little whilst we’re on our daily lockdown Insta scroll and thankfully, Dua Lipa has blessed our timeline.

Dua’s album, Future Nostalgia helped us get through the start of the 2020 (we needed something) but she hasn’t let us down since then either. Lockdown has had us in a cycle of pyjamas and sweats, but Dua Lipa has been pulling through with some real looks that have inspired us to get all dressed up for ourselves.

Dua Lipa is high-key doing everything right when it comes to both music and fashion. As her music career has grown, so has the collection of killer pieces in her wardrobe. It’s no wonder she has amassed a platform of 63,162,465 monthly listeners on Spotify and 59.3 million followers on Instagram since her tunes and threads are head turners. From cultivating trends to rocking custom pieces and independent names, we’re taking a look back at Dua’s fashion record.

The Met Gala has consistently always had celebrities turning out some amazing looks, so it’s only fitting to start with Dua Lipa’s 2019 Met Gala look. Dua Lipa’s Met get-up was a stunning Atelier Versace by Donatella Versace psychedelic look which absolutely nailed the theme. 

There’s a lot to unpack here – the peplum style skirt with matching leggings and a beautifully embroidered bodysuit – this look alone is enough to get us adding some bright, bold, colourful pieces to our wardrobes ASAP. We also can’t ignore the hair here either, Dua’s hairstylist Anna Cofone (@annacofone) knocked it out of the park with this the-bigger-the-better do. Dua’s do was a yes from us. 

Dua Lipa doesn’t just have one iconic fashion moment though – her career has pretty much been filled with looks that are to die for. Our other favourites?

The bra and track pants. Dua Lipa is basically the unofficial queen of this look. The lingerie as daywear trend was soaring in 2018, and Dua Lipa really cemented a specific styling of this; an underwire bra with track pants. Iconic. One of our favourite combos for this being from her concert in Dublin, Ireland, where she rocked a lacey blue La Perla bra with purple track pants. 

We really can’t discuss Dua Lipa’s fashion without addressing her latest looks at ‘Studio2054’ though. Her custom Mugler was one of her most jaw-dropping pieces of the night, though her stylist, Lorenzo Posocco (@lorenzoposocco) did not falter when it came to the rest of her looks that evening either. Her custom The Attico and Alexander Wang pieces did not miss the mark either. Dua’s ‘Studio2054’ event was generally just iconic in terms of fashion moments, a real milestone in Dua’s fashion history.

With a great following and great style, however, comes great responsibility. Dua does not shy away from responsible fashion either though; wearing a LOT of independent brands (yay for us, because some of these looks don’t even break the bank!). One of our favourite independent names that Dua has donned is Juliet Johnstone. Juliet is an LA-based artist and model who up-cycles trousers, tees, and more with some beautiful paintings. 

Dua has rocked a Juliet Johnstone tee and trouser combo before now, looking like a noughties dream. We know Dua’s got at least two pairs of tops and one pair of trousers tucked away in her enviable wardrobe because Dua hasn’t shied away from showing off her Juliet Johnstone gems on social media. Dua Lipa isn’t only making huge strides in the fashion world in terms of killer looks; she’s promoting beautiful clothing that doesn’t harm the planet. Speaking to Vogue, Juliet Johnstone said that her pieces are very anti-fast fashion, that her intentions were never to make a profit from waste, but just to create art. 

Demonstrating her love for indy brands even further, in her hit with Calvin Harris; ‘One Kiss’, Dua lipa’s dancers were also adorned in super cute glittery blue wear from the independently owned Elsie & Fred. Started by three siblings; Leanne, Natalie, and Ryan Haynes, the brand is named after their maternal grandparents and Dua Lipa’s dancers make her Elsie & Fred pieces look just as cute as the brand name. 

Dua Lipa has been busy, blessing us with killer music, clothes, and places to shop sustainably at. We’re sure we haven’t even seen half of the iconic fashion moments that Dua will bless us with throughout her career though. As she keeps producing records, her fashion record remains impeccable.

Ever since Billie Eilish burst onto the music scene by releasing a heartfelt ballad called ‘Ocean Eyes’ on Soundcloud back in 2016. Don’t think it’d be wrong to assume that no one would imagine the level of superstardom she’d reach in just a few years. Ever since she dropped that track it’s been nothing but a meteoric rise for the California native. In the last two years, the teenage pop sensation has released her number-one debut studio album and picked up award after award including Grammy’s, VMA’s, AMA’s, and Brit awards.

It seems that Billie’s recent domination of the music industry will only be the tip of the iceberg for her as her potential seems to have no limits. We’ve never seen an artist appeal to so many people, pop fans listen to her, hip hop fans listen to her and even rock fans listen to her. One of the reasons Billie has been so successful is that her sound takes influence from so many places ranging from Tyler, the creator to Lana Del Rey.

Her biggest influence, being hip hop, is what has perhaps made her music so huge considering that it’s currently the biggest genre in the world. Her production is laced with booming 808 drums you’re likely to find in a contemporary trap song and she carries herself with the confidence you’d expect to see from a rapper. Her versatility knows no boundaries as her album showed she can go from somber and heart wrenching to providing full-blown youthful and confident bangers in the space of a few minutes. She has songs for everyone and every situation, whether you want to cry, party or anything in-between there’s a song in her catalogue for that.

Billie is almost the perfect artist for this current generation. Her whole aesthetic is made for the social media age, it’s no fluke that she’s managed to reach almost 65 million Instagram followers in such a short amount of time. Her fashion choices are one of the main things that made her stand out at such an early point, she wasn’t dressing like other artists and now millions of kids are dressed like her. She has transcended music and made forays into the fashion world and recently collaborated with UNIQLO and the iconic Takashi Murakami for a new collection.

Billie clearly loves what she does, whether it’s fashion or music she has always pushed herself to the limit in terms of creativity. It’s great to see a pop star not sacrifice parts of themselves to gain mainstream success, Billie has done this all while remaining true to herself. She’s never made what could be considered a typical radio hit, they’ve just become that organically. Ultimately, it’s her willingness to remain unique that has got her to this stage in her career. She’ll only get bigger from here if she carries on with this momentum and there’s no doubt she’ll dominate the charts for years to come.
