Adding furs and feathers to shoes is a bold way to instantly elevate a look that might be lacking in interest or dimension, instead adding intrigue and a focal point that isn’t usually explored in an outfit. By drawing the eyes down to the shoes, one must take in and explore all elements of the look in harmony as the eyes travel downwards. Rather than the eyes fixating on a bold jacket which would encompass the gaze, the designer is prompting you to dig a little deeper and take in the outfit as a whole.

From Vivetta to Alexander McQueen, runways have seen models shake their tail feathers this autumn with A/W24 collections branching out into a fluffy, feathered fabric with texture reigning loud and clear. The autumn season has always been the time to experiment with layering, textures, colours, and designs, and 2024 is sticking to that tradition with the next modern twist on a classic style.

Simon Porte Jacquemus’s late debut of his SS 23 collection created panic before it even began. Teasing Instagram followers with a statement that read ‘Le Raphia’ would be his last collection, he quickly followed up with a cheeky “of the year”. Before the show even began, we knew it was going to be as fun as Jacquemus himself.

Yesterday, Le Bourget airport, Paris, was filled with models and show attendees as Jacquemus showed off his wonderful new collection. They say all good things come in threes, and this was definitely the case with ‘Le Raphia’. Shown in sets of three, we witnessed outfits in related trilogies walk down the runway.  The setting worked wonders for the natural aesthetic of the collection as models walked under falling straw, which fell as elegantly as light snow.

Taking a lot of his inspiration from the beauty of the natural world this collection gave us yet another glimpse into the mind of the fashion designer. Stating his greatest muse for fashion design was his mother, the collection taps into new influences as well as staying true to his number one inspiration. Previously designing for the “typical French girl”, he envisioned this collection worn around the Italian coast. For girls’ passionate about fashion and like the more-is-more aesthetic.

The Collection

The hype of his Summer in Winter show has everyone eager to start spending, and luckily the collection has started to drop today with a promise of a short wait for later items. Featuring denims, feathers and of course raphia, the collection was full of fresh summery designs. Suits, were of course featured, along with dresses containing cut-outs and strappy shoulders. Let’s take a look at some of the new features of the spectacular designs of yesterday and our key takeaways.

Raphia

Starting with the huge use of raphia, which inspired the name of the collection. We see oversized cartwheel hats and fitted bucket hats, perfect for the collection’s location intention of coastal Italy.  Paired with huge sunflower earrings, they could not look better.

Ruffles

Strong, constructed ruffles were a common sight at the show. Ruffles predicted as a SS 23 trend can be understood after watching the models walk down the sunlit runway of Jacquemus’s show.

Colours and Patterns

Super on brand from Jacquemus we see his colours evolve through the seasons. Evolving from his last collection, ‘Le Papier’, we see more of the natural whites and creams pop up in his latest designs. His previous use of pink also makes an appearance within the collection as well as a large focus on beachy, pastel colours. The psychedelic, wavy prints inspired by the 1970’s are shown on sarongs and beach wear. WGSN x Coloro colour of the year 2023, Digital Lavendar, has also made a popping appearance within the clothing collection.

Feathers

Wispy feathers were seen across multiple outfit trilogies. Used as trim, worn over well-tailored suits and going full out with coats and tops, we suspect this will be extremely popular in SS 23.

Bags

Famous for his micro-mini bags, we did spot one of his signature bags being carried down the runway. However, most bags within the collection were much softer styles than his usual designs. Feathered bags and raphia bags were commonly carried down the walkway, which complimented the soft styles of the clothing worn. Going against his usual sizing, we see bigger is better for the upcoming season as large bags take precedence.

The designs of De Carvalho emerged from his exploration of museums, fine art, and his own self-discovery. 

The collection by Brian De Carvalho was heavily influenced by his fascination with 18th-century fashion. Carvalho’s interest in macabre influences and styles aids in a collection that explores the various torture methods used in this eclectic period. A classic 18th-century silhouette is always what Carvalho uses, but always with a darker twist- using moments from history such as the Ripper Murders but also drawing inspiration from his own personal life. His designs are walking artworks that play with elements of darkness and despair. 

Struggles for emancipation are a theme prevalent within Carvalho’s collection. In each silhouette, the juxtaposition of freedom and being trapped is omnipresent. Starting with his desired silhouettes, the designer looked into corsets and how restrictive they can be, as well as the lengths women went to look beautiful. Carvalho saw the resemblance between the oppression of women in the 1800s and what queer people go through nowadays. Each garment is carefully made to appear delicate yet imposing, with each piece having to overcome some form of restriction: of course with that in mind, the collection is based entirely on a “false sense of freedom”. 

From an instrument of constriction for the body and representation of minority status for the female gender; to a celebration of the wearer’s figure: In what ways does your new collection reinterpret traditional corsetry?

My pieces have always been about extremes, whether it be extreme silhouette to extreme discomfort. The corset/stay was meant to be a shaping product/piece—an item of clothing to give off the desired silhouette for women back in the 1800s onwards.

Obviously, as society evolves past these beauty ideals and necessities, my pieces serve to create wearable dramatic art! Having elongated horns sticking out the front/top to frame the face or being made from materials that we wouldn’t dare hide or cover up. It’s about being strong, visible, and proud.

The 18th century birthed the neo-classicism movement. Do any of your pieces draw inspiration from this movement? 

I think all of my pieces, in general, have very classical inspiration behind them; I tend to mostly pull either from the 1800s or the 1950’s tiny, cinched waists as opposed to massive, large skirts. I find myself toying with the gentleness of “femininity” and the brutalism of “masculinity”.

I love that your collection relates historical themes to modern-day queer issues, can you elaborate on this

The entire collection is based on a false sense of freedom which I believe, we all in one way or another can relate to, you can obviously see that I took one of my favourite childhood movies (The Matrix Series) as a way to display that, this idea that we are able to be who we are and that we are free to make our own choices, but actually, we have many constraints working against us, whether it be a large draping skirt that allows you to run freely or a cinched corset that restricts your breathing let alone allow any movement to be made.

Of course, Here in London we may not notice it as much, or see it as much but there are thousands of people who aren’t permitted to live their true authentic selves, whether it be our Trans brothers and sisters or anyone else who falls within the spectrum.

We have all heard about the challenges women have faced over the decades but only now are we starting to hear the faint cry of the struggles the queer community face and have faced show up in mainstream media.

What is your brand philosophy?

Our Brand Philosophy is “By Any Means Necessary” and what that means is that we will make a mark no matter what and we will push this message as much as we can, we don’t create these elaborate excessive garments simply because we want to (even though it is very fun) but we do it because attention needs to be brought to these people and their messages. We want to be seen; we want to be heard … like everyone does.

Your garments honour both female and male silhouettes. How would you describe the relationship between the body and your designs? 

I find my pieces are either in constant battle with the human form or beautifully synchronised with it, my garments either repel the human form almost to shape the body into becoming otherworldly, or it caresses the human form to display it, it its most organic form. And I believe we need both. To accept what we are but also explore what we could become.

Can you explain how your reflective hi-vis corset works? Or what materials are involved in making this piece? 

Hhahah the Reflective Serena Corset was a fun idea I randomly had! I was trying to piece together this random string of ideas I had one night, and I was extremely focused on “being seen/visible” but I didn’t want to work on massive silhouettes that would take up the whole room.

Instead, I thought, if I was in a dark room full of people how would I Shine my light elegantly, discreetly calling the attention of everyone around.

Immediately I thought of the nightlife where queer bodies and the outcast are left to roam and shine-free, Then the Reflective Hi-Vis Serena Corset was born. 

However, I guess it’s quite comical that I used a fabric that most fascist/homophobic men (construction workers usually) wear to adorn queer bodies.

I always somehow end up highlighting the opposing forces.

There’s often a sculpture-like approach to your garments; what’s your creative process like?

Ohhh yes! 100%, I have a fine art background- so I wasn’t really taught how to think like a fashion designer, I spent 3 years in university trying to justify that what I was doing was a form of art, and I found myself referencing sculpture a lot.

A lot of the time I think about the shape of the piece before I truly make any further decisions on it. I think about how I want it to sit on the body, how much space I’m wanting to take up, and how it’ll make the person feel, power is always at the heart of what we do.

You mentioned that the juxtaposition between freedom and being trapped is a theme within your new collection, is there a piece that best displays this contrast? 

I think the pieces that easily display this is the Trinity Dress and the Esmeralda Dress, both have my signature corseted bodices (with a new little twist) but then have these exuberant skirts that allow complete freedom of movement, The Trinity however is still extremely heavy so, in theory, you have the space to be free, but you need to find the strength to truly move and become free.

The Esmeralda is completely lightweight and airy, the true emotion of what it means to own who you are and move freely within the space you’ve created for yourself.

Last question, what’s next for Brian De Carvalho?

Well, it’s hard to say, this is the very first time we have ever been able to release or even make a collection, we have always been a one-off/ custom business so it’s very exciting that we are able to grow in this way. I hope this collection allows people to see that we are trying to elevate what we do and truly become the brand we want to be.

Harris described his brand as “Romanticism gone Non binary”, this unlikely combo gives the wearer the confidence to feel their most authentic self and put their fluidity front and centre, something that is so empowering. The fight for fluidity in fashion is not an easy one. Many years of gender construct within the fashion industry need to be broken down, but with Reed’s goals and ideas, this future doesn’t seem an unlikely one!

Supported and loved by many superior brands and VIP celebs, Harris Reed is a well-needed breath of fresh air in the industry. Dressing the likes of Harry Styles, Solange Knowles, Selena Gomez, Ezra Miller, Troye Sivan and Miley Cyrus, Reed has a unique and particular style that emanates throughout his work and into the wearer. This is evident in the dress designed for Iman for the Met Gala 2021, the golden, sunbeam dress radiates Harris’s love for fashion and the limitless possibilities of the ever-changing industry, whilst also gracefully linking to the Met Gala’s theme.

Harris says that his inspiration comes from dressing up in old halloween costumes and his mums clothes at around the ages of 8 and 9, he says this is where his love for fashion first begun. You can see the playful ‘dressing-up box’ inspiration throughout all of Reed’s work. He has mentioned before that Little Bo Peep is one of many inspirations for his signature over exaggerated hats and fascinators- an unlikely source of inspiration for many, but not for the eye of Harris! A clear creative connection to this childhood nursery rhyme character is apparent in many of Harris’ collections; from his first year at CSM, his most recent re-worked bridal collection, and his “60 Years A Queen” collection which has just walked in London Fashion Week this year show.

Harris has said that it was a dream of his to bring out a bridal collection, and now he has! Entitled “Found” the collection is an extraordinary array of lace, veils and sheer material. This collection features 10 black and white looks creating a modern and sleek interpretation of classical wedding day clothes. This gender fluid bridal collection gives the wearer the breath-taking feeling that all hope to feel on their big day. A perfect balance of feminine and masculine silhouettes, the collection is unlike any other bridal collection ever designed before.

Entitled “60 Years A Queen” this demi-couture collection made its debut on the catwalk of London Fashion Week this year. His strive for fluidity is shown throughout the collection and is stunning to look at and shows a true and honest expression of Harris’s ethos. With a regal mix or corsets, gloves, and lace Harris is reaching new fashion heights many didn’t know existed. A classy and sophisticated take on fluid fashion, “60 Years A Queen” gives us a look into how broad the fluid fashion style can go!

Alongside his demi-couture collections, Harris has a “Fluid basics” collection containing a compilation of skin-toned wardrobe basics, further showing Harris’ range and passion for inclusivity for all. Soft, flexible fabric designed to make the wearer feel comfortable in their own skin no matter what, what’s not to love about that!

Harris Reed will present highlights from his outstanding Demi-couture collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Having fluid clothing and a queer designer represented in a museum is a groundbreaking step in Harris’s fight for inclusivity. The collection aims to show off the best of his work whilst educating people on the future of fluid fashion and its importance in the industry. Work from his first year at CSM to the latest LFW collection will be available for viewing. With an immersive set designed for the V&A, three fashion performances will take place in the museum’s Raphael Court on Friday 18 March, featuring designs that explore themes of performance, opulence and self- expression.

Kim Jones’ striking new collection for Fendi celebrated femininity at its core with the help of a groovy disco soundtrack that reflected the mood of the looks superbly. Through an amalgamation of striking colours and monotone looks, and with each shimmery fabric and flattering cut, each design dominated the catwalk and empowered women every step of the way. It was a party not to be missed!

Del Core

It was florals galore at the Del Core display but that wasn’t all. From dramatic ruffles and
maximalist head pieces to draping trains and head to toe metallics, each design offered a sense
of fluidity and sensuality in line with the inspiration for the collection. Del Core couldn’t have done
much more to make for an extravagant SS22 debut.

Vivetta

With pinks, pastels, playful prints and a spot of ice skating, Vivetta’s digital presentation delivered from start to finish and we were not disappointed. With everything from fluffy sandals to jewel encrusted dresses, the show, titled ‘Moon Girls’, gave us a dreamy moonlit insight into the beautiful 60s inspired pieces the label has created for Spring/Summer.

Alberta Ferretti

It was all in the details for Alberta Ferretti’s Spring/Summer collection, which presented
contemporary, goddess-esque designs. Crochet and macramé were a prevalent theme running
throughout much of the collection, celebrating the handmade technique which has gained traction
over the past year and is set to be the style of the summer for 2022.

Jil Sander

Showcasing an array of dynamic jacket and trouser sets, the Jil Sander collection radiated power
through boxy silhouettes and statement tailoring. We were teased with colours and prints which
were expertly used to brighten up the collection in the most subtle of ways.

Roberto Cavalli

In a hard-to-miss spectacle of all things wild, Roberto Cavalli served up some major looks that donned head to toe animal print, tiger, cheetah, zebra – you name it! The ultra sexy display boasted floor length robes, cut-out minis and a cape style shirt which flung the face of a lion right into the audiences horizon. In true Cavalli style the collection was daring as ever.

Max Mara

Defined as a ‘bourgeoisie rebel’, the Max Mara SS22 show presented effortlessly cool two pieces, statement jackets, and elegant dresses. The brands signature set of neutral shades were rampant to begin with, but as the show progressed naturals and nudes were transformed into a sunny hue of oranges and yellows, alongside seaside-inspired stripes. The emphasis was on the bag this season, with a distinctive new style parading down the runway in a variation of colours, sizes and materials.

Emporio Armani

Presenting a fluid collection where both men’s and women’s designs overlapped, Emporio Armani’s Spring/Summer collection exuded that Metropolitan spirit that helped get the brand to where it is today. Successfully catering to the market of the youth, the brand gave us jackets, trousers, dresses and more, with each piece hanging so softly making for the ultimate ready to wear collection.

Blumarine

Nothing says Noughties quite like the full body explosion of sequins and glitter that we saw on the Blumarine catwalk. Serving us an array of ultra cool, Y2K inspired looks, the SS22 show had low rise denim, studded shades and sheer mesh baby tees, not to mention almost every look boasted a butterfly fluttering down the runway in one way, shape or form, think belts, body chains, earrings and bags. Paris Hilton called and she wants her wardrobe back!

MM6 Maison Margiela

The MM6 Maison Margiela SS22 debut was a rendezvous in celebration of life’s return back to normality. Revealing an extroverted checkerboard print plastered across the likes of denim jackets, trench coats and suits, the collection was not for the faint hearted. Quirky accessories topped off the looks and, keeping in line with the theme, we saw jester style collars and even a pair of yellow gloves resembling the Marigolds we used to wash up our dishes! As the bold and fulfilling show reached its climax there was truly nothing left to give. Checkmate!

GCDS

Fun and flamboyant was the name of the game for the GCDS exhibit. Fit for an island getaway, an array of wide brim hats, neon bikinis and floral embellished knits were among stars of the show. Platformed heels also had their moment, accessorised with exaggerated prints, sequins aplenty and oversized logos, making for a show stopping stomp around.

Prada

Prada never disappoints and this season was no different, a simultaneous display of their SS22
collection was shown in both Milan and Shanghai, celebrating the power of technology and
fashion’s ability to transcend borders. The show explored classics, blazers, leather jackets, mini
skirts and a whole lot of black. Though, when we were least expecting it, bursts of neon would
take over the runway. Alongside the classics, there were intricate details like boning, lace up and ribbonlike trains that danced across the catwalk floor.

Act No.1

In an artistic masterpiece by Act N°1, we got a taste of structured ball gowns, Rapunzel hair and cloud-like feathers. The collection came alive as models erupted from their outfits into complete new looks. A powdery blue took over the runway and we are certain this is going to be the colour of the summer.

Versace

From beginning to end Versace SS22 dished out look after look; from cut-outs and sparkles to latex and prints. From dresses to pantsuits, and two piece sets – Versace gave us all. With this latest collection aiming at the Tik Tok generation of now, Versace showed us a revival of vibrance and playfulness. What better way to end the mid-week MFW round up than with Dua Lipa strutting down the runway in a metallic pink number, fit for a queen, ready to close the show in nothing but style.

With the launch of the fall-winter 21/22 collection, Naza Yousefi, designer of the accessory brand YUZEFI, makes her debut in the world of ready-to-wear with her first clothing line, talking about, “The desire for a new beginning lies within all of us. A need for normality, but that offers something fresh, proactive and serious”. The simplicity of the silhouettes and their essentiality are a natural continuation of the style that the brand, based in London, had initially chosen for their bags.

Versatility and functionality are also elements that from the world of accessories have been translated into the world of clothing, in order to create a fil rouge and preserve the identity of Yuzefi. So a series of laces and drawstrings have become the tool to make the garments transformable and to create an aesthetic uniformity without solutions of continuity. Another distinguishing feature is sustainability, which results both in the use of recycled and certified vegan leather, and in the recovery of surplus fabrics, such as linen and wool, which, once again, apply the same approach to garments as the one reserved for accessories.

The suits that YUZEFI presented for the fall-winter 2021 2022 collection are characterized by cropped blazers decorated with long laces that allow you to tie panels to lengthen their silhouette, combined with soft-cut trousers, both in a black version and in sandy shades. The skirts are wallet-shaped, tied at the waist and also worn over the trousers as an overcoat; they are then worn with jackets, always cropped, but with a structure that integrates the rigid cups of a bustier. The “wrap” construction is also chosen for the shirts in pastel tones, such as wisteria, and there are proposals with large vegan leather pants. The dresses are mini with a tank top cut and with small knots that stop the straps, or even longer version, again in vegan leather, combined with trousers and then used as a long tunic, for an elegant look monochrome and “mono-material”.

Vinti Andrews Spring Summer 2021

In search of creativity during the lockdown, most designers and fashion labels have found inspiration closer to home than ever before – and Vinti Andrews is no exception. Drawn to the British seaside and freed from the ongoing pressure of a new season being just around the corner, the label has gone to extra lengths in maintaining their sustainable and rebellious ethos for Spring/Summer 2021.

Set in Torquay, the collection becomes a vibrant element of a very quiet and still setting. With their funky characteristics (the pattern of a pair of ‘80s curtains re-imagined or the Nike logo visible on a repurposed dress), the garments become an ode to youth, pop culture, and messy summer days at the beach. The label has focused on incorporating such elements thorough sourcing recycled fabrics, leftover materials, and garments from charity shops. It was a joint effort between Vinti Tan and Paul Andrews to build a collection from – now arguably- nothing.

“We really had no budget, so everything was on table in regards to the creative process. We were thinking about what we could do with just what’s in front of us, and our surroundings,” said Vinti Tan.

The answer to all questions came when Torquay became the source of inspiration for the collection. Vinti said: “I grew up here, so I have many positive memories, yet also I could not wait to move to London. Seaside towns are some of the most deprived areas in the UK, there’s nothing going on culturally, so you really had to make up your own entertainment here, there were lots of free parties/raves in the woods at the time in the ‘90s.”

Rebellious and reminiscent of the party scene, the video production presenting the collection captures the secret energy that can be found in this remote area. Torquay as a theme and source of inspiration became truly an authentic choice when the label decided to work with an all-local cast and crew. Instead of dreamy snippets of the sea and passive models, intrigue and interest were created through juxtaposed loud music and distorted imagery. These elements complimented the mood of the clothes, which show rebellion and creativity, and are ready to wear by an environmentally conscious Gen Z muse.

The collection is also pioneering the way luxury is being viewed today by the younger generation. Re-purposed Christian Dior and Armani could be spotted among the clothes, which shows that labels are today less important. The designers are making a conscious decision to maintain the brand’s sustainability ethos rather than feeding into the logo and branding Instagram-filled frenzy. Reflecting on what the Vinti Andrews garments represent, Vinti said: “I think that the Armani mixed buffy T-shirt cocktail dress is my favourite, as it tries to bring totally different worlds and designs together – the idea of bringing mature ‘90s Italian lux high fashion together with US teen TV culture, and making something new.”

And while the collection and the brand’s attitude towards sustainability have always been more than clear, the pandemic could potentially amplify the brand’s commitment to waste reduction in the long run.

“I think I will be less inclined to follow the track paths of seasons in fashion,” said Vinti.

As Haute Couture week goes digital for the first time, Dutch Designer Iris Van Herpen has responded with her singular Transmotion Dress and accompanying Film. Recognized for her inventive approach to design which largely utilizes digital methods including 3D printing and laser cutting, it seems the designer is already immersed in the Digital world.

It is safe to say that Van Herpen has produced some artistically driven masterpieces and for Autumn/Winter 2020 we are not let down, despite there being only one dress to admire. Enveloped with conceptual meaning, Transmotion is a true work of art that stands alone.

Van Herpen’s work has that timeless quality with its strong inspiration from nature. Poetically capturing new beginnings, the brand’s site depicts the dress as having “seed – like crystals” and “black branches”. Delicately hand-stitched to the centre of the dress, its intricate linework of branches weaves an organic language of life. Embellished seeds of black Swarovski crystals flourish into pure layers of pleated silk organza. Encasing the upper body, we are reminded of the uncontrollable nature of growth and its relationship to movement and change.

In an interview with Vogue, Van Herpen delves deeper into the meaning of the anatomical design stating how the “core and the beadwork [represent] growth, [which itself contains the idea] of strong, feminine empowerment”. She also shares the reason she chose Game of Thrones star, Carice Van Houten to feature in the film, describing how she was inspired by the “dichotomy between strength and fragility [that is] very prominent in her acting, and it corresponded well with what [she] had in mind”.

Through the juxtaposition of strong black detailing against the fragility of sheer and freeing silk, we can see why Carice Van Houten was the perfect fit. The Transmotion Film captures these details beautifully, with the actress moving delicately amongst beams of light. She is controlled in her movement. There is a sense of strength and stillness.

The symmetrical nature of Transmotion is enchanting. Taking inspiration from the work of M. C. Escher, a Dutch artist who challenged the way we perceive, Van Herpen’s Transmotion attracts a double-take. Captivating with detail from every angle, the dress is essentially the same from front to back and top to bottom. In the accompanying Film, altered perception is drawn upon further. Glass panels obscure the natural landscape and Carice Van Houten is illusively doubled against mirrors. Van Herpen’s site shares how this idea of perception has been important “amidst an era when polarising ideologies are heightened”.

Amidst layers of silk organza, we can find a complex array of meaning. Transmotion is a piece of wearable art and a stunning encapsulation of important themes that we hope to see expand into a larger collection.
