The nominees for this year were announced back in November 2022 but just in case you missed them here are some of our favourite artists who are up for a prize.

The nominations for Record of the Year in the general field (that recognises the producers, sound engineers, and sound mixers as well as the performing artist) includes Sweden’s pop icons ABBA’s ‘Don’t Shut Me Down’, 28 time Grammy winner “Queen Bee” Beyoncé’s ‘Break My Soul’, the nation’s favourite soul singer Adele’s ‘Easy On Me’, the oh-so bad Doja Cat’s ‘Woman’, indie hero Steve Lacy’s ‘Bad Habit’, our favourite rapper Kendrick Lamar’s ‘The Heart Part 5’, diva Lizzo’s ‘About Damn Time’, and teen girl heartthrob Harry Style’s ‘As It Was’.

Up for awards in the Song of the Year category are the tracks by Adele, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, and Kendrick Lamar nominated for Record of the Year as well as the infamous DJ Khaled’s ‘God Did’ featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend & Fridayy, the singer-songwriter Taylor Swift’s short film ‘All Too Well’, and the artist that blew up TikTok Gayle’s ‘ABCDEFU’.

The albums nominated for the Album of the Year include: 30 by Adele, Voyage by ABBA, Un Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny, RENAISSANCE by Beyoncé, Mr Morale & The Big Stepper by Kendrick Lamar, Special by Lizzo, and Harry’s House by Harry Styles.

Among the artist nominated for best new artists is our fav cheeky indie band Wet Leg whose punk single ‘Chaise Long’ released on their eponymous debut album last year has gathered millions of streams. Brazilian Latin pop artist Anitta has also been nominated having risen to international fame over the last few years. Samara Joy, the 23-year-old American Jazz singer, is up for the award as well as having released her second album as a leading musician Linger Awhile last year. The Eurovision-famous Italian Glam rock band Måneskin who are about to drop their 3rd studio album Rush! Later this month, are among the nominees in the category too.

Fans of Drake and The Weeknd may be surprised to not see them nominated in a single category. Last year the Grammys ended its secret-committee nominations in the four main categories in the general field (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artists) following protests sparked by the 2021 Grammys when it was revealed the Weeknd’s hugely successful After Hours and single ‘Blinding Light’ did not receive a single nomination. The Weeknd and Drake continue to boycott the awards this year.

With any of our music idols – Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, and Lizzo, to name a few – bound to come home with one or two prizes this year there’s no way you’ll want to miss out. Grab your popcorn, a little booze, and of course your besties ready for a watch party in style. The Grammys will broadcast on CBS Television Network at 8-11:30 ET and will be available on Paramount + for fellow UK viewers.

It is impossible to talk about the history of fashion, the Rockstar years of the 90s, and not refer to Schiffer – her beauty, countless catwalks, daring campaigns, and experience have influenced the fashion and modelling scene of today. But the supermodel hasn’t stopped influencing it, this time however she has decided to do it from behind the scenes. Claudia Schiffer has now invited us to look at the photography that marked the 1990s with Captivate! – an exhibition in Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf and its accompanying coffee-table book. 

Captivate! is a chance to experience from Schiffer’s eyes, the 90s “golden era” through her own archive; to see what her favourite fashion visuals were, or how the photographs that didn’t make it to the covers and stands look like, but also appreciate the essays and words from the fashion pioneers she had the chance to work with. 

Claudia Schiffer opened up to us about all of this and more, if you want to dive into her intentions when curating this book and exhibition check out our interview with her below. 

What inspired you to work on Captivate?

Firstly, I really like the word Captivate!. The book and exhibition are about fashion photography in the 1990s and great images do ‘captivate’ the imagination and become part of the pop consciousness. 

Since the beginning of my career, I have collected fashion images and worked and learned from true masters – Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh included – and my personal collection forms the basis of the book and exhibition. I wanted to encapsulate the vision of fashion that helped captivate and shape the perspective of a generation. 

What does this book and exhibition represent for you and your career? 

I have worked with such extraordinary, incredible people and I’m enjoying the different avenues my career has taken including roles where I am designing or curating collections, which felt like a natural next step for me.  Working with the team at the Kuntspalast and with the contributors to the book including Carine Roitfeld, Ellen Von Unwerth and Christine Arp, has been amazing. I’ve learnt a lot and I always want to be learning.

What would you like your followers and fans to get out of Captivate? Is there a specific message you’re trying to transmit through the photographs and stories that will be told?

First and foremost, the impact of the pandemic has severely affected the economic health of the arts and culture sector across the globe. Galleries, institutions, studios, and the people who work in both the public and private spheres are struggling for survival. My primary hope is that Captivate! both the exhibition and the catalogue attract a wide audience to the Kunstpalast and boost a love of fashion and photography. The experience of attending a show in real-time is unbeatable and the coffee table book brings the exhibition to anyone around the world who can’t attend. 

What was your favourite aspect of working on Captivate? And how challenging was it to go through with this project throughout the pandemic? 

It took time and a lot of patience – I mean there were literally thousands of images to choose from. And because I wanted to show the numerous formats of fashion photography in the pre-digital age – from fine art prints to Polaroids, contact sheets, fashion magazines, to campaigns and model cards – the selection was extensive. I wanted to also create strong contrasts between iconic covers shots, runway imagery and candid backstage snaps. 

What made it? What didn’t? I always asked myself is this quintessentially 90s? and does the image truly represent the individual photographer’s eye? I also wanted to celebrate the teams of photographers, models, stylists, hair and makeup artists, and art directors that collaborated to make fashion happen. Where the 1980s were defined by perfectionist high glamour, the 90s was about energy, reality and personality, the show also captures that big shift. 

How do the images that will be shown in Captive differentiate from the current fashion photography landscape? 

The 1990s was the last decade of the analogue era so everything was shot on film and tests were in the form of Polaroids to gauge light, composition, and colour. I wanted these formats as well as unseen and backstage images. Today, the edit happens on the screen and imagery can be consumed instantly via social media. In the 1990s, the magazines were like the bibles of fashion, with every cover and page eagerly dissected. Budgets were much bigger and literally, a location shoot could last for over a week – so many friendships were formed on these trips.

What do you think about the evolution from the pre-digital age to the digital one? How has it influenced the fashion and modelling world? And which one do you prefer? 

I think the industry is fundamentally the same, but it has grown beyond my wildest imagination. There are more collections, brands, the pace is faster and social media has had a huge impact. It’s been great for marketing fashion and beauty products, and for models, social media is a superb way to manage your own exposure. The flipside of the big exposure is perhaps the pressure to share everything with everybody. In the 1990s, you could still have a private life.

Since the birth of social media, fashion has witnessed a big sea change.  What’s interesting to see is the rise of the influencer. There’s so much talent today that is diverse in race, age and increasingly, size. Individuality and personal style and expression are being championed like never before. Non-professional models have become a vital source of inspiration for their peer groups as well as for designers.  It’s so healthy to see such diversity in faces and styles. 

And models now have a voice – they are true polymaths, entering fields such as activism, sustainability, fashion design, technology, wellbeing, acting and they can enjoy multi-track careers. I think the supermodels provided the template. There is no ‘ageing’ outlook at Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, or Cindy Crawford and her daughter Kaia, Georgina Grenville, Carolyn Murphy and myself – we all continue to work. For me, curating a show and editing a book represents a challenging and fulfilling new avenue.  

In regards to the modelling industry and your career, what would you say has been your biggest achievement? And will it be covered in Captivate?

The big task of editing Captivate! made me appreciate the 90s and the extraordinary creativity. I do miss the camaraderie and the adventures, but you can never ‘repeat’ such a time. Some of my best memories include my first show, which was for Karl and Chanel and was very special. It was the pivotal moment in my career that transformed me from a shy teenager into a supermodel. Then there were Gianni’s shows, which were like rock concerts. We’d walk to an amazing Prince track with hundreds of photographers lining the catwalk, only to see him sitting there at the front row. For the exhibition, Donatella re-created a brilliant azure blue dress which I wore in the A/W 94 couture show: it’s divine.  By contrast, Valentino shows were like stepping into a fairy-tale world while Dolce & Gabbana’s evoked the exuberant Italian dream.  You really have to step into character and perform:  the runway experience is like nothing else.

How would you describe Captivate in 3 words? 

Captivating! Joyous!  A revelation! 

Are you working on any other future projects? 

I’m very lucky to love what I do, so design collaborations and curating roles felt like a natural next step for me. In addition to the book and Kuntspalast Captivate! fashion photography show that I curated, I have a glassware and ceramics collaboration with the wonderful Portuguese heritage brands Vista Alegre and Bordallo Pinheiro. The collections (launched last year) are inspired by my love for nature and there are new ranges coming out in 2022. I so enjoy learning about the craftsmanship behind these makers and drawing up shapes and motifs.

I also have just collaborated with the lovely brand Réalisation Par, which I discovered via my daughter Clementine. The range is out now and is very much inspired by the 90s and the kind of pieces I used to wear on a daily basis. I looked into my archive collection and found silk slip dresses, daisy prints and a classic black and white microdot – these finds were the starting point.

Victor Weinsanto

Victor Weinsanto has been a rising star during PFW, and he did not disappoint with his refreshingly authentic show. The folklore of Alsace (where he grew up) offered design inspiration for his SS22 collection as he pulled out all the stops by even asking his grandmother to sing in Alsacian dialect for the soundtrack to the show. Weinsanto also brought drama to the runway with vivid colours which brightened up the darkroom, including a distinct fuchsia. Dramatic collared capes also framed the models, keeping to the theatrical theme featuring a geometric purple cape paired with a matching dress and sheer leggings. 

Marine Serre

Marine Serre’s SS22 collection was an ode to environmentally focused living as it was Serre’s most sustainable collection yet due to it being composed of 45% recycled and 45% regenerated materials. She gave her digital film the title OSTAL 24, (meaning house in Occitan historical language spoken in Serre’s native region) as Serre wanted to create a sense of comfort within her collection. This 13-minute film featured lab coats fashioned from embroidered tablecloths and tea towels as well as catsuits and joggers in psychedelic prints. Serre’s signature styles also popped up including overdyed patchwork jeans. Within the film, the models went about their daily lives; including cooking and mediating to prove you don’t need a glamorous runway to appreciate fashion. 

Christian Dior

Christian Dior brought colour to PFW this year with their SS/22 collection. The venue underwent a 60s nightclub inspired makeover with multi-coloured flooring and a live band playing Italian disco music. The ’60s influence did not stop there though, it was evident within the collection as the runway was flooded with colour blocking A-line dresses and miniskirts alongside trapeze coats. Glittering evening looks also took to the stage following the nightclub ambience as well as mesh fabrics and extravagant bows.  

Ottolinger 

Ottolinger’s SS22 show, which took place on the Left Bank, was all about cutouts and showing off some skin. The line-up of models featured a range of body types which is not seen often across these fashion weeks as diversity was celebrated as feeling sexy and revealing skin should be enjoyed by all. Cut out necklines were spotted as well as the same detailing on trousers that wound their way down the models’ legs. Cycling short coordinates were also a staple of the show appearing in a vivid orange or a more basic white. The look that stole the show was the twisted denim outfit which included asymmetric waisted jeans and a one-sleeved jacket creating a unique look for SS/22.

Saint Laurent

Saint Laurent stormed the runway right where Paris shines the brightest as the Eiffel Tower lit up the surroundings and was the spotlight to the stage. The glistening landmark was not the only breathtaking part as the collection did not disappoint. Saint Laurent brought the glamour back to their home turf after a year and a half of being locked away. Fitted suits and blazer dresses with padded shoulder detailing made a sophisticated statement as well as elegant maxi dresses featuring the one-shoulder look and cut out detailing. Colourful accessories were also paired with these outfits, including an electric blue which was seen repeatedly. Flattering catsuits were also rocked by the models as they were seen in a floral print and a vibrant purple. 

Didu

Didu’s presentation at PFW featured cowboy accents and a range of silhouettes as Du designs her clothing around the idea that skin is a textile too and can be used in an outfit. This included deconstructed clothing such as a cut-out waist on trousers as well as the splicing detail seen on a range of tops. Backless garments were also a theme of the show as this detailing elevated the clothing to give it a classy but sexy look. Wrap over necklines were also a complimenting touch to the line, featured in a range of eye-catching colours including a fiery red and an unmissable purple. 

Rochas

Charles de Vilmorin’s Rochas collection set light to the runway as the first wave of the show featured a dark and fiery palette that seemed inspired by burning flames. There were a range of short and maxi plisse dresses featuring dark oranges and deep reds with ruffled layered details. As well as knee high boots and platform shoes which snaked their way up the leg like a burning flame. Next up in the collection was a more monochrome based theme inspired by De Vilmorin’s drawings, including puffed out skirts and flowy dresses. Lastly, there was a theme of deconstruction as materials draped around the models and cold shoulder dresses and tops hugged the models. 

Dries Van Noten

Dries Van Noten’s SS22 collection stuck to the digital format and took a euphoric festival-inspired approach with an uplifting colour palette. The collection got us even more excited to be able to groove again next summer, especially after this fashion inspiration from them. A range of textures was used, including jacquards, silk and fake furs as lockdown prevented us from dressing in extravagant and lavish clothing so Dries Van Noten used this opportunity to go all out. This also included lively fringing dresses in colours of turquoise and orange. Depths of glimmer danced its way into the collection as well with bejewelled denim jackets and sparkling tops. 

Di Petsa

Di Petsa made a splash during this PFW as their custom wet look flooded the SS22 collection. Sheer white dresses embellished with silver jewels rippled down the models as well as low waisted midi skirts paired with a cropped top creating a glowing goddess look. Draped midi dresses were also a key part of the collection appearing in an ocean blue and a satin white featuring a feminine low back.

Acne Studios

Acne Studios SS22 show took place in a rustic setting of a loft as exposed brick and large mirrors surrounded the runway which was covered in a plush black fabric. These surroundings complimented the rich neutral colours of the collection as cream and brown leather appeared on dresses and shorts, as well as the contrasting stitch on trousers as two tones were played around with. Juxtaposing was also a key theme as punk like leather was paired with feminine chiffon shirts and delicate corset tops. Sheer shirts took to the stage as well, paired with buckled skirts delivering a fierce look. 

Balmain 

Balmain served us with an unforgettable show as Olivier Rousteing took glitz and glam to a whole other level. Rousteing was celebrating 10 years as lead designer, and he showed off his talents through a collection full of neutral and gold tones. Heavily embellished jackets dazzled the audience as well as gold chain detailed garments and cut-out, figure-hugging maxi dresses. An audio tribute by the pop queen herself, Beyonce also praised the designer and referred to Balmain as an ‘amazing tool for beauty and change’. The show ended spectacularly as Olivier showcased his most iconic designs which included a dress modelled by Naomi Campbell, who was wearing a sparkling, figure complimenting maxi number that made it a night to remember. 

Rick Owens

The ‘Prince of Darkness’ Rick Owens made a smoking appearance at PFW as his models entered the Palais de Tokyo through clouds of fog showcasing his dark yet loud SS/22 collection. Owens brought black back as the show featured a range of dark outfits including layered looks with leather jackets and black mesh garments. It was a representation of his signature aggressive aesthetic as large black platform boots also paraded down the runway. Orange coloured mesh also found its way into the collection amongst the black, layered over a cut out one piece.

Chloe

Chloe’s SS/22 show took place in a picturesque location by the River Seine, which complemented the natural beauty of the collection. Models strutted down the riverbank with elegance as angelic white dresses flew in the wind and suit co-ords made a smart statement. A muted mustard yellow was also seen on the garments to add a splash of colour to the collection, including midi skirt coordinates and floor-length trench coats. Colour was also seen on crochet detailed dresses which were embellished with shell-shaped accessories giving a beach-like vibe. 

Lecavalier 

This fashion week’s calendar marks Marie-Eve Lecavalier’s first Paris appearance with her SS22 collection. All garments featured a range of textures and patterns creating a delicate look whilst also remaining complex. Layering with shirts was also a trend seen with mesh vests and wide crochet knit stitch dresses. A handful of colours were used as Lecavalier stuck to a specific colour palette of neutrals alongside blues and reds. 

Isabel Marant

Thursday ended beautifully with Isabel Marant’s show as she continued with the beach vibes and transformed her staple feminine designs with a bikini silhouette perfect for SS22. The show was filled with energy as abstract patterns and bright colours worked hand in hand to create outfits that screamed summer. The upbeat music spoke for the lively attires which included emerald green floral co-ords and bikini tops layered over lemon yellow tops. Mini dresses and oversized jackets also appeared in shades of orange and yellow.

London-based Chloe Bodur is the 23-year old soulful singer-songwriter you need to have on your radar. Taking inspiration from a diverse array of musical figures, her eclectic style blends together elements of neo-soul, jazz and pop, forming the distinctive sound that listeners all over the country are falling in love with. Bodur has hit the ground running with new party hit ‘Watch Me’, featuring vocals and guitar from Bubba Janko. Created as an “ode to the attention seekers in the club” the musician describes the joyous experience that was making the track. With groovy disco undertones and a repetition of seductive vocals, ‘Watch Me’ will have you letting loose and dancing the night away right through until morning. We caught up with the artist to find out more about her unique style, the inspirations behind her latest track and what the future has in store.

The past year has been quite challenging for many of those in the creative industry, in what way has it effected you?

Making my last EP ‘Panties & Loafers’ on Zoom was really difficult and I never want to do that again lol. The time-out from doing shows, releasing music etc though really gave me time to think about who I am as an artist. I feel like a completely different person/artist than I did before the pandemic. A more evolved version of myself. I’ve gone from being a girl to a woman it feels, if that makes sense? I feel braver now!

Could you tell us a little bit about how you first got into music and what has kept you there?

I loved singing as a kid, making up poems and songs. I think a lot of people are like that as children but they’re not lucky enough to have parents that encourage their creative endeavours. It went from that to writing songs with my guitar as a teenager, to studying music technology at college and learning how to produce, to forming my band at uni and then getting to do music professionally after I graduated. I think my Mum always encouraging me to do what I love is one of the main things that’s kept me at it all these years. That childhood creative spark was never stepped on it was just nurtured. So thanks Mum!

How would you describe your musical style?

Sometimes psychedelic soul, sometimes alternative RnB, RnBossa, sometimes UK jazz. It’s a mixture really. I always like to surprise people with what I put out rather than ever doing the same thing twice.

Who are some of your musical heroes and how have they influenced your sound?

The Neptunes – general amazing and innovative production, influenced by their use of guitar and vocal adlibs. All the 90s/00s RnB legends have influenced the layered backing vocals & harmonies I always have in my tunes. Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Brandy, SWV etc. Then old soul legends like Stevie Wonder, Quincey Jones, D’angelo, Anita Baker for that classic songwriting and band instrumentation side.

Congratulations on your new single ‘Watch Me’ — what were the inspirations behind the track?

Thank you! I’d wanted to make an uptempo track for ages because I love dancing and it was annoying me that I couldn’t dance to any of my music. Because soul is what a lot of my music is rooted in it made sense that if I was going to do an uptempo track that disco is where I would head for that so we tried to make a modern disco tune. We were trying to make a love child between Donna Summers ‘I feel love’ and The Internet’s ‘Roll’.

What was it like working with your boyfriend, Bubba Janko?

It’s interesting making music with your boyfriend because there isn’t that professional boundary that’s there with other people. There’s no politeness which can lead to us being quite savage to each other sometimes. With someone else you might say ‘hmm I’m not sure about that idea’ but to each other we’ll just be like ‘nah are you mad? that sounds shit’ which can either be a great thing in the sense that we push the best out in each other or we can just end up annoyed with each other lol. It totally depends how sensitive we’re feeling that day. Luckily with ‘Watch Me’ we both loved everything the other person was doing so the vibes were immaculate the whole session.

There’s a positive energy about the song that really makes you want to get moving, what do you hope listeners will take from ‘Watch Me’ and your music in general?

The main thing I wanted from Watch Me was exactly that, to get people dancing and smiling and feeling themselves! For the rest of my music I hope people feel like they get to know me a bit better but I’m happy for people to take whatever they need to from my music and interpret it whichever way they want.

Which artists are you listening to at the moment?

Right now I’m listening to Little Simz’s new album. I love ‘sun, mood & herbs’ off Venna’s new project too featuring Jvck James. Sault is always a go-to for me as well. I think Sault are making some of the best music in the world right now.

Have you got any advice for young musicians trying to break into the industry?

Prepare yourself for the long ride! Connect with the creative young people in your local community and build a team from that to get started. Your mate that’s doing photography a-level, your mate that’s really good at makeup, your friend that makes clothes etc start by working with them to build your brand and take it from there. Make music that you like for YOU, don’t try and impress anyone else – that way it’ll sound authentic and unique to you.

What’s next for you? Any potential collaborations or exciting projects coming up in the near future?

Yes me and my cousin JD. Reid have been recording together so I’m excited to share the songs that we’ve been working on. Lots of music I’ve recorded with my band is coming soon too. Pairing a tacky, tourist ‘I heart NY’ shirt with a netted long-sleeve shirt immediately darkens Lola’s spirit. I am sure we can all relate to Lola’s outfit upon returning to our hometown after living in a big city. Paired with her iconic Coca-Cola cap necklace, this outfit is a perfect start to understanding how Lola’s style is reflective of her emotions.

Raf Simons has been nothing short of a success in the Fashion Industry. Having launched his own menswear label in 1995, alongside spells at renowned brands; Jil Sander, Dior, Calvin Klein and now a new partnership with Prada, Simons’ journey has been a roller coaster, to say the least! As we prepare for the next Prada spectacular in September there seems no better time to reminisce on our favourite Simons moments.

The Raf Simons collection of Spring 2002 strongly encapsulated that streak of “rebellious youth culture” for which the label is widely known. The title of the collection “Woe onto Those Who Spit on the Fear Generation…The Wind Will Blow It Back” drew upon the social turbulence of the youth, with powerful messages such as “We Are Ready and Willing to Ignite Just Born Too Late” printed across many of the garments. The looks were dominated with headscarves and stark block colours of black, red, and white, with many models carrying a fire torch; an unexpected yet highly atmospheric addition to the show.

Although rebellion and youth culture are inspirational within his personal label, Simons has also demonstrated his flair for the traditional, and proved himself the perfect fit for Jil Sander in 2005. In line with Jil Sander’s minimalist aesthetic, Simons’ earlier collections for the Brand were beautiful in their simplicity yet flirted with experimental shapes. Across his eight years at the House, Simons demonstrated his ability to create inventive yet inherently wearable designs. His abstract prints met the simplicity of tailoring, asymmetrical sleeved coats were subtle, yet statement and fringe cut-out dresses were daring. Simons has a talent for making his own style apparent while paying respect to the ethos of the Brand. In 2012 we saw the beginning of a new chapter when Raf Simons made his memorable debut at Dior as Creative Director. Presenting a glow of elegance and sophistication that alluded to the Brand’s ‘new look’ of 1947, the collection was definitively Dior. Incorporating the classic nipped waist, accentuated hips, and flattering curvature around the bust, Simons had succeeded in reinventing a timeless look for the Dior Woman. Yet Simons’ artistic passion was cleverly woven throughout the iconic language of Dior with several of the pieces featuring the abstract works of Sterling Ruby, an artist that the designer has admired for many years. The result was a series of beautiful dresses that showcased the incredibly traditional yet new direction of the Brand under Simons’ wing.

It is no surprise that Simons’ penchant for the artistic genre developed while at Dior, with Christian Dior himself taking pleasure in the works of Salvador Dali. For the Fall of 2013, Simons drew upon the works of Andy Warhol with its repetitive prints and portrait detailing, followed by incredibly experimental colour contrasts the following year. Simons’ journey at Dior felt short but sweet, however, his contribution to the Brand in both a traditional and artistic sense will always be remembered. Who can forget a pairing as harmonious as Simons and Dior!

Simons’ career has been abundant with highlights and these are only a few of our favourites. We are excited to see what the Prada – Simons partnership brings for Spring/Summer 2021, and if it is anything like Simons’ collections so far, this show is one to keep posted on your calendar.
