Nia Williams founded relationship coaching service Miss Date Doctor (M.D.D) in 2016, aiming to provide modern support for modern love and relationships. The platform has coaches and counsellors for any relationship issue, delivering more help than most contemporary relationship agencies, as M.D.D enforces the importance of any issue, big or small, to a relationship or individual. With over 100 packages and lots of happy customers, it’s clear that M.D.D’s director knows her stuff. We’ve asked her some questions to help you with your love life for those of you spending December in Tier 3 Isolation.

We understand that being isolated with your partner might be a topic you’re worrying about, and you wouldn’t be alone: this might be one of the toughest times for relationships, but also one of the most exciting- it’s not often you’ll have this much time to spend together.

Nia is here to help you survive such challenging times and to help see this time through.

What’s your most important piece of advice for couples isolating together for the first time?

“This will feel quite stressful for couples, the emotional stress due to the unpredictability of the future and also financial impact can make individuals irritable and needing their partner’s support more. Due to this the most important thing to do is be patient with each other and understand these are unprecedented circumstances, give your partner space when needed, work in separate rooms and give emotional support if your partner is feeling anxious or stressed about the future – giving assurance you will get through this strenuous period together.”

Establishment can be an important part of communication in relationships: being open and declarative about things we need, want or have can be vital to avoid unnecessary arguments and keep couples from clashing. What do you think needs to be established in the relationship?

“Couples living together need to establish the following:

1. Working hours when quiet time and private time is needed.

2. Establish how you will sustain food supplies i.e grocery stores or food delivery service.

3. Personal boundaries for each individual i.e house rules to avoid conflict.

4. Write up a chores list that can be divided between the two of you.

5. Organise an ‘at home date night’ once a week i.e Netflix, couples games, romantic candlelit dinners etc.”

Having one space to live and work in can make anyone feel confined and claustrophobic, let alone when there’s more than one person doing it in the same place. Sometimes physical distance and boundaries are the best way to establish a sense of independence and focus, having different spaces for different daily routines and having different spaces for individuals can provide the compartmentalisation that’s needed when you’re isolating. With these house rules, personal boundaries and establishments in mind, are there any physical boundaries that you think should be set for couples in terms of working and living and isolating in one shared space?

“Yes, this is very important if physical boundaries are not respected this can lead to terrible arguments and significant upset. The following rules are imperative:

– Do not talk to me during working hours if I am working from home unless I engage with you or you just want to tell me something briefly.

– Do allow me to have private time to myself sometimes, despite us living under the same roof.

– Please respect your partner’s living rules to avoid arguments over chores and keeping the living space tidy.

– Respect that you are two different individuals but your different living styles have to integrate together successfully to avoid disagreements.”

People might be afraid to confront their partner with these ideas of distance and independence, what’s the best way to ask for some alone time without offending your partner? “Let your partner know you need some space and once you are finished you will join them.”

And how do you suggest we find some independence beyond the physical boundaries you’ve suggested? “Do not be too codependent on your partner; codependency ruins relationships. It is important that even though you are living together you do your own thing and embark on your own daily tasks and chores without constantly disturbing your partner.”

Even with these boundaries and independence, we understand when you’re stuck in the house with someone for a long time, arguments are almost inevitable. What do you think is the best way to diffuse an argument, or prevent one when tensions are high?“To avoid arguments listen to each other and show cognitive empathy towards your partner enabling you to see things from your partner’s perspective as well as your own. In the case of diffusing an argument concede if you are wrong, then apologise and do not raise your voice when speaking to your partner also always be aware of your tone.”

In isolation, every day can feel the same as we get into a routine that doesn’t change and can’t change, and with repetition comes boredom, which is sometimes the cause of these high tensions. How do you suggest couples can keep spontaneity and romance while stuck at home?

“Agree to quality time, no phones, no zoom, just the two of you. Try to create romantic fluidity by having intimacy and romance sporadically throughout the lockdown period. Understanding each other’s languages helps a lot in this situation knowing what your partner wants and needs is imperative. Play couples games i.e. a date night box, staycation setup or create an environment ideal for a romantic staycation. It is important to remember during lockdown give each other adequate space so that it doesn’t kill the romance.”

Games and staycations can be a brilliant way to spark romance and stop this period from feeling like an unrelenting Groundhog day, but on top of the boredom and impatience surrounding this pandemic, there is a lot of anxiety about the virus and families and these unprecedented times as a whole. One of M.D.D’s many counselling services regards mental health in the context of relationships, and the company is a key advocate for mental health, supporting and promoting Prince Harry’s Heads Together initiative. How should we comfort our partners if they’re feeling worried and how should we ask for comfort if we’re anxious in these times?

“Anxiety during this period is understandable. The unpredictability of this period is overwhelming, to say the least. It is important to communicate your feelings with your partner and be patient and supportive. Finances and jobs are a sensitive area at this time, create an environment that lets your partner feel comfortable at this time. Let your partner know your worries and fears and how this may be affecting your present behaviour. It is important to recognise your partner may be under strain at present which may result in some negative behaviour or possibly mood swings – do not take this personally.”

Although we are all facing a lot of uncertainty right now and all the elements of our lives have been changed by this pandemic, there is optimism and positivity to take away from it all. What message should couples keep in mind during this unprecedented period?

“The pandemic has been a strenuous period for us all but adversity is inevitable in life. There will be ups and downs and with patience, good communication, teamwork and resilience couples can get through this together. True love is shown by its unwavering strength through the tough times.”

William Diep is a powerhouse. How many sixteen-year-olds do you know who, due to the blasé attitude of their country’s current president, have taken matters into their own hands by creating an online anti-racism movement in the midst of a global pandemic? I now know one – and he’s great.

Following a series of videos that emerged online back at the beginning of the frustratingly long Black Mirror episode that is 2020, showing a number of Asian-American people in incredibly compromising situations involving physical and verbal abuse; William saw a pattern that he couldn’t stand for. In fact, he even saw it at school, when one day in February, a classmate claimed the “Kung-Fu” or “Ling-ling” virus was brought to America by people of Asian descent. “It was completely abusive, derogatory and offensive to the Asian-American community. The fact that I may get attacked because people look at me and think I may have brought the virus here is completely false.” Following this, alongside President Trump’s failure to address these issues; William ultimately felt he had no choice but to launch his student-led Instagram campaign: Virus: Racism.

This year’s Fashion Week hasn’t quite been like all others. With the pandemic putting many hurdles up for the fashion industry, the show still went on for designers and fashion houses to display their ss21 collections through digital and physical shows (COVID safe ones f.y.i). The hardship of this last year has affected many in many different ways, however, for the fashion industry, not even a global pandemic could stop them from setting the trends for the coming season. Safe to say, we were very impressed as a new era of post (and present) COVID trends emerged from the runways.

Minimalism

The move toward minimalism reflects the sense of focus and thoughtfulness that has emerged amongst designers post pandemic, and how we are focusing on necessity. This saw some truly beautiful garments. Fendi, debuted soft silhouettes, pale whites and used linen as the main fabric. Maxmara also adopted a relaxed minimalist approach while sticking to their signature colour palette. And Emilia Wickstead’s collection was also pointedly minimalist, in designs that were refined and nostalgic to prove that this seasons style was best derived through simplicity.

Going Trend Free

The idea of going trend free has been the talk of the town with houses like Gucci going seasonless. Nowhere was this more apparent, than in Victoria Beckham’s SS21 collection. Each piece was purpose led and far more covetable when it was removed from the energy of the runway. This collection suggests that we will be seeing more toned-down fashion, that is both calm and elegant, masculine and feminine.

Shimmer and Shine

Glittering fabrics were one of the biggest breakouts from the SS21 catwalk. With crystal embellishments, sequins and reflective patent leather, the traditional glamour and elegance of fashion week was very present. Honed by designers including Tom Ford and Givenchy, this glittering trend shows that while the fashion industry is changing, the energy of sparkling designs is still alive and is a great image of hope.

Reinterpretations

Dolce and Gabbana used fabric from previous seasons in an effort to lower the environmental impact of their show, Marni showed coats made in up-cycled materials from previous collections and Fendi drew inspiration for their collection from embroidered household linen. This trend reflects the fashion industry’s new found interest in looking inwards, and can be expected to be replicated in up-cycling of garments and reimagining of old trends.

Brown

Brown is the new black this season. We are always looking for a break out colour trend, and this year brown was everywhere, in collections from Jacquemus to Bottega Venata. This natural tone is perfect in minimalist and natural looks, and is a neutral to easily integrate into your wardrobe. The earthy hues make for a perfect way to ground feminine pieces and create understated elegance.

Relaxation

How we will dress post-pandemic is a topic that has been hotly discussed, and fashion week truly rose to the occasion. Armani showed silk sweatpants, while Max Mara debuted hooded sweatshirts and slouchers, with Fendi pairing outfits with slippers. Perhaps more than any shown this fashion season, this trend reflects our changing approaches to fashion and proves that comfortable dressing can still be elegant.

Even though there was no one around to witness this year’s Billboard Music Awards, there were still many show-stopping moments throughout the show, from Post Malone sweeping the floor with the most awards of the night to some incredible performances, we’re here to let you know all the talking points.

It was no surprise that Post Malone had won the most awards at this years ceremony considering the year he has had, he picked up nine awards overall while taking home the top artist prize to end the night and winning nine awards overall. Following Post Malone was Khalid who picked up five awards.

The ceremony opened with host Kelly Clarkson providing us with a tear-jerking monologue. “Tonight is about the way music touches us all because music connects with us in so many ways. No matter who you are, it moves us, sometimes Literally,” said Clarkson, adding “We dance. We sing. We cry, like I do often. It brings back those good memories and it also helps us make new ones”.

As always with award shows, often the looks take the spotlight and this year’s awards are no exception. Perhaps the most jaw-dropping was Lil Nas X’s, sporting a light green Gucci suit in a snakeskin print, while giving us major Prince vibes with his new curly bangs.

Post Malone continued to be the star of the show with one of the best performances of the night at a “top secret” location. Parading around an industrial yard stage, Post performed his smash hit ‘Circles’ and then his Tyla Yaweh collab “Tommy Lee”, with Yaweh himself, which made for one of the most electrifying performances of the night.

Some of the other captivating moments of the night included Doja Cat embracing musical theatre with a burlesque-inspired performance. Doja sported a throwback dress and wig with an old-Hollywood sense of showmanship. Lizzo provided a big statement during her acceptance speech for top song sales artist while wearing a dress covered with the repeated word, “VOTE”. She then went on to say “I’ve been thinking a lot about suppression, and the voices that refuse to be suppressed,” later adding “and I wonder, would I be standing here right now, if it wasn’t for the big black women who refused to be suppressed?”.

The unofficial award for most emotional performance will most certainly be going to John Legend. He performed a solo ‘Never Break’ on piano, the singer dedicated the performance to his wife Chrissy Teigen after their recent personal tragedy.

En Vogue closed out the awards with a rendition of anti-prejudice anthem ‘Free Your Mind’ as the group celebrated their 30th anniversary. Original members Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron were joined by Rhona Bennett as they performed one of their greatest hits and at one-point, Childish Gambino’s This Is America was sampled as black-and-white footage of civil rights marches played on screens behind the band members which provided a poignant and hard-hitting closing to the ceremony.

If day 4 of Paris Fashion Week had one recurring theme, it was the focus around how the pandemic has altered the way we think about fashion. From transforming dresses in Y/Projects ss21 collection, to metallic dungarees and studded leather pants in Isabel Marant’s disco-infused collection, we were reminded of the past and future and how the pandemic has changed and evolved the face of fashion.

Presented outside the Palais de Tokyo, the Chloe spring/summer SS21 show, titled “A Season In Hope”, effortlessly reminded us of what everyday life used to look and feel like. Creative Director Ramsay Levi was in search of normality. Leaving models to ponder around the streets of Paris, walking along the Seine, and smoking a Cigarette, the fronting theme of optimism perfectly embodied the Parisian inspired coverage of the show; to walk and watch. As the models were broadcasted on screens outside the Palais de Tokyo, the unique collection personified a moment where our worries were free and where women can embrace their power and strength. Married by the French feeling of chic street style moments and nonchalantly strolling the lanes of Paris, the show was a blissful and carefree presentation of the SS21 collection.

Influenced by watercolor, multi-layered tones took centre stage. Pleated ‘arsenic’ dresses, camisoles, delicate lacework, prints, and knits; the incorporation of mixed media pieces added depth and dimension to the clothes. Juxtaposing pieces such as silk wools paired with ruffled shoulders added a playfulness to the pieces, not to mention the accessories. Sculptured and structured bags and jewellery contrasted the freedom seen throughout the clothes and added a sense of rigidity to the collection.

2020 has been about reinvention and adaption to new ways of life. A statement that can be perfectly compared to Glenn Martens Y/Project Spring/summer 2021 collection. Where floral dress can be un-fastened and transformed into a ruched top and pencil skirt, or an office pinstripe shirt dress re-worked into a backless, ruffled mini dress. Alteration and change really are the key motifs through this collection, giving us inspiration and food for thought in the way we think about fashion. Going from day to night looks in a matter of minutes, their SS21 collection proves to us that fashion is ours to own. And that there is no excuse for missing post-work drinks.

If you asked what the face of fashion would look like in October 2020, one look at Rick Owens SS21 collection and all your questions would be answered. Presented in the Piazza outside the Lido Casino his collection is a true reflection of how the pandemic has influenced French fashion. Asymmetrical suits, power shoulders, platform knee-high heels, all finished off with standout face masks, the collection is equally as dark as it is enlightening. A real testament to how the pandemic has shaped and strengthened our minds to adapt. As Owens said in an interview with Vogue “In the face of adversity, we have to pull ourselves up”.

Extravagant ruffles, miniskirts, off the shoulder tops and stud adorned leather jumpsuits, Isabel Marant reminded us of a world we so dearly miss since the coronavirus pandemic. Models walked the SS21 runway on Thursday night striving in metallic hot-pants, oversized jewellery, and killer heels. The list could go on. Reminding us of the good times, Isabel’s SS21 collection injected a dose of optimism and hope to the return of pre-COVID life.

In search of creativity during the lockdown, most designers and fashion labels have found inspiration closer to home than ever before – and Vinti Andrews is no exception. Drawn to the British seaside and freed from the ongoing pressure of a new season being just around the corner, the label has gone to extra lengths in maintaining their sustainable and rebellious ethos for Spring/Summer 2021.

Set in Torquay, the collection becomes a vibrant element of a very quiet and still setting. With their funky characteristics (the pattern of a pair of ‘80s curtains re-imagined or the Nike logo visible on a repurposed dress), the garments become an ode to youth, pop culture, and messy summer days at the beach. The label has focused on incorporating such elements thorough sourcing recycled fabrics, leftover materials, and garments from charity shops. It was a joint effort between Vinti Tan and Paul Andrews to build a collection from – now arguably- nothing.

“We really had no budget, so everything was on table in regards to the creative process. We were thinking about what we could do with just what’s in front of us, and our surroundings,” said Vinti Tan.

The answer to all questions came when Torquay became the source of inspiration for the collection. Vinti said: “I grew up here, so I have many positive memories, yet also I could not wait to move to London. Seaside towns are some of the most deprived areas in the UK, there’s nothing going on culturally, so you really had to make up your own entertainment here, there were lots of free parties/raves in the woods at the time in the ‘90s.”

Rebellious and reminiscent of the party scene, the video production presenting the collection captures the secret energy that can be found in this remote area. Torquay as a theme and source of inspiration became truly an authentic choice when the label decided to work with an all-local cast and crew. Instead of dreamy snippets of the sea and passive models, intrigue and interest were created through juxtaposed loud music and distorted imagery. These elements complimented the mood of the clothes, which show rebellion and creativity, and are ready to wear by an environmentally conscious Gen Z muse.

The collection is also pioneering the way luxury is being viewed today by the younger generation. Re-purposed Christian Dior and Armani could be spotted among the clothes, which shows that labels are today less important. The designers are making a conscious decision to maintain the brand’s sustainability ethos rather than feeding into the logo and branding Instagram-filled frenzy. Reflecting on what the Vinti Andrews garments represent, Vinti said: “I think that the Armani mixed buffy T-shirt cocktail dress is my favourite, as it tries to bring totally different worlds and designs together – the idea of bringing mature ‘90s Italian lux high fashion together with US teen TV culture, and making something new.”

And while the collection and the brand’s attitude towards sustainability have always been more than clear, the pandemic could potentially amplify the brand’s commitment to waste reduction in the long run.

“I think I will be less inclined to follow the track paths of seasons in fashion,” said Vinti.

Highly expected designers (such as Erdem, Victoria Beckham and Christopher Kane) have today shared their vision for the Spring/Summer 2021 collections and – as if this was not exciting enough- we have also witnessed a sprung of joy and creativity amongst our British designers. Today, optimism reigned in the form of patterns, colours, and diversity.

Designer Osman Yousefzada has launched at London Fashion Week his new label with the digital production ‘Here To Stay’. Completely taken in by its earthed political statement, the film becomes a celebration of marginalised communities and their heritage, proving once again that fashion is an artistic expression of individuality and current events.

“Fashion should be about the creation of human value from Weaver to Wearer,” said the designer.

The collection mainly features jersey and linen-blend dresses, as well as oversized tailored pieces reminiscent of the ‘90s. Osman Yousefzada is reintroducing tie-die for Spring/Summer 2021, with hand-made prints created by artisans from Mumbai, India. The designer has also recreated pieces such as the Nehru Jacket into modern garments by playing with neutrals and utility-style influences.

In times where optimism seemed to be long forgotten, there came Mark Fast. Featuring the brand’s neon-colour obsession and playful MF monograms, the Spring/Summer 2021 collection is inspired by the nightlife and the ‘80s and ‘90s. The label’s take on print and texture overlaying is youthful and rebellious.

‘Future Fusion’ has shown that everything is possible: from neon green feathers on a colour block striped skirt, to matching pastel shades of lavender and pink with green. Cut-outs and patchwork have also been featured in the collection, making the garments modern and full of sex-appeal.

Classic and inspiring royalty, as always, Erdem has chosen to showcase their Spring/Summer 2021 collection in the ancient Epping Forest, in Essex. Once proclaimed a royal forest, it had – supposedly – been used by Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I as a hunting ground. The scenery perfectly complemented the showcased garments and theme of the collection.

The collection was inspired by Susan Sontag’s character, Emma Hamilton, who rises from being a blacksmith’s daughter, to becoming a political player within Italian aristocracy. Erdem has swept us away with detailed and classic, yet unconventional prints and embroidery. Paired with fine jewellery and maxi dresses in classic cuts, Erdem introduced platform shoes in funky patterns as a Spring/Summer 2021 must-have.

For Spring/Summer 2021, Bora Aksu proposed a link between current times and the post-war decadence of the 1920s. Inspired by the new role women started to play during the 1920s as nurses and the rise in women’s rights within society, the brand sent down the runway looks blossoming of femininity.

As expected in COVID times, the models wore tulle face coverings as a facemask. The collection featured oversized clothing and flowy dresses and skirts, leaving no room for sharp silhouettes. Shades of white, baby blue and creams allowed detailed embroidery and prints to shine through, showcasing Bora Aksu’s design signature.

Rooted in our day-to-day lives, the garments are modern with their strong tailoring and colour palette. Shades of beige, white and black are indispensable but, far from being too somber for Spring/Summer, they are accompanied by surprising pieces, such as a pair of green wide-leg tailored trousers.
