Rihanna was the star of the red carpet as all eyes were on her and A$ap Rocky wearing Christian Lacroix and Bottega Veneta. Her blue fur get up was a vintage Lacroix haute couture piece from FW 2002 and fell nothing short of Badgalriri’s signature style. Elevated with stacked silver necklaces and black leather gloves, she stole the show.

Co-host for the evening, Maya Jama dazzled us as she wore a stunning olive-green gown with cross over detailing at the top and embroidered flowers at the front. The silk flowing train also included intricate embroidery along with a fishnet trim encapsulating Connor Ives as a designer as we see his unexpected fabric combinations and striking colours first hand.

Jourdan Dunn served us a head-to-toe leopard print moment with Dior. The model chanelled her inner black-cat energy with the cat-eye lashes, and showed off her legs with the micro shorts, perfectly accompanying the blazer and long black gloves. The bakerboy cap finished off the look with a British essence for the British Fashion Awards.

Ashley Graham walked the carpet in a gorgeous black dress from David Koma’s first collection for Blumarine. The black dress included a sheer train to finish it off and a structured bodice showing off her figure. Graham, who had her VS debut earlier this year, finished the look off with a slicked back bun and all silver jewellery.

The stunning Halle Bailey wore a bespoke Ellie Misner dress and channelled her inner Disney princess on the red carpet. She arrived with a light and airy presence as she graced us in a couture piece draped in pearls and holographic cut outs mirroring when she starred as The Little Mermaid.

Alex Consani became the first transgender woman to win the Model of The Year award last night and as Voir puts it – made style accessible to women everywhere. She walked the carpet looking gorgeous in a Dilara Findikoglu moment and celebrated backstage in style after thanking the transgender models who came before her, paving the way for Consani to flourish.

Julia Fox joined Consani in supporting emerging designer Dilara Findikoglu, as she broke the internet in the custom dress. The white floor-length gown included sheer cut outs showing off Fox’s figure, and styled with a wet-look up do and icy makeup to tie everything together.

Chlöe Bailey (left) is pictured looking glamorous in an Atsuko Kudo black gown with a red accent in the bust area. The latex ensemble created a raw feminine energy, the pop of red giving depth to the outfit and her hair matching the vibe as it effortlessly shaped her face. The look was finished off with a silver diamond necklace as we were left with an undeniable serve on the carpet.

Simone Ashley, Bridgerton star stepped onto the carpet in a baby pink, strapless Prada gown. The coquette dress had different levels to it; from a short front to a long train at the back and was finished off with a matching pink bow on the bodice. Styled by Rebecca Corbin-Murray, Simone Ashley for sure had her girly moment on the runway in that dress, along with a slicked back hairstyle which was giving an iconic pixie cut at the front.

Ming Lee Simmons wore an undeniably daring look to the awards last night as she was pictured in a sheer chainmail dress. The floor length number was figure hugging and sleekly complemented by jet straight hair in a half up fashion and incredibly well contoured make-up. The look gave her a luxuriously fearless presence on the runway.

Munroe Bergdorf left Voir nothing short of speechless as she dominated the runway in a Patrick McDowell gown. The structured silhouette on the bodice broke off into a bubble skirt and was accompanied by a luxurious train graciously following her. The statement dress created a memorable bridal-like vibe which was sophisticated paired with dramatic flair.

If you’re like any of us (glued to your phone 24/7), then you’ve likely seen a certain trend creep onto your feed more than once since December: Royalcore. Following the success of fashion sub-categories such as Y2K, Cottagecore, and Dark Academia in 2020, Royalcore came onto the scene under the guidance of the Netflix series Bridgerton.

Royalcore focusses on any and all things royal in aesthetic, from Kings and Queens to Knights, Princes, and Princesses. However, the strands of Royalcore that you see mostly on social media right now are Princesscore and Regencycore, the latter of which was birthed directly as a result of the Bridgerton craze. As of March 2021, #Royalcore has racked up an impressive 80.7 million views TikTok alone.

Based on the visuals of Western European royalty, Royalcore fashion is all about the characteristic styling elements that were historically limited to royalty (and later the very wealthy). Sumptuary laws had been used for centuries to regulate the way we consume certain fabrics and colours, meaning that they could be explicitly associated with the upper echelons of society. Fabrics like silk, velvet, and taffeta as well as vibrant and metallic colours were reserved for royalty, becoming synonymous with luxury and rank.

But enough with the history lesson. Where does this leave the Royalcore trend today?

Princesscore

Royalcore takes inspiration from both historical and fictional characters, and Princesscore is no different. Whether real life or Disney princess, the Princesscore trend’s sole intention is to emulate the grace, delicacy, and aesthetics of a youthful royal.

Princesscore is recognisable through its emphasis of floor-length dresses, flowing fabrics, lace, and the much-loved corset. However, the beauty of the aesthetic lies in the multiple time periods it can quote, emphasise, and even mix. The allowance for interpretation has already created small sub-genres within Princesscore, including “light” (pastels, white, gold) and “dark” (black, deep red, gothic accents) versions. The possibilities are truly endless.

In terms of accessories, no true Princesscore fanatic would be seen without a crown or diadem. Paired with pearls, gloves, and diamonds (or close enough), the crown is a central staple of the royal renaissance.

Social media has allowed followers of the Princesscore trend to build up a massive following in a short space of time. Users who predate the current boom are Jordan Brown (@hellomissjordan) and Porsha Hall (@porsharenaehall), who provide a masterclass in both the fashion aesthetics and the princess-y mannerisms of the trend.

Emily Brenn (@embrenn365), dubbed the TikTok Princess by locals, interweaves all the elegance of crowns and gowns with the comedic personality traits of a feminist princess. Her wardrobe of royal goods is often used to offset the rougher commentaries of her audio,

creating little skits that would make even the grumpiest of lords chuckle.

Regencycore

A strand of Princesscore which has gotten a lot of attention recently is Regencycore, which as the name suggests is loosely based around the Regency Era of the early 1810’s. Rather than stick to royalty, however, the Regencycore trend encompasses multiple aesthetics from high society.

As mentioned, the growth of Regencycore is indebted to the popularity of Bridgerton, which promoted fashion staples like elbow-length gloves, empire line dresses, and capped sleeves. According to an analysis by Lyst, the impact of period sources like Bridgerton saw online searches for corsets and pearls spike by 123% and 49% respectively, putting the Regencycore trend on the virtual map.

TikTok again appears to be a hub for development, showing how Regencycore fans have adapted the trend to their own aesthetic. Two main trends stand out for their prioritisation of either excessive embellishment or historical accuracy (although these can sometimes overlap). TikTok users Lama (@shawty.arabia) and Asta Darling (@asta.darling) are recent leaders in the Regencycore trend, using their platforms to document the process of making (often Bridgerton-inspired) gowns and accessories. Lama’s pastel creation highlights all the delicate detailing that made period costumes a hit, while Darling’s various gowns play on historical narratives and settings.

Brands Bringing Their A-Game To The Royalcore-Hungry

The demand for Royalcore is high, but not everyone has the means to make themselves a ballgown. Don’t worry though, many ready-to-wear brands and designers have taken up the role of Fairy Godmother this year. Selkie

Selkie blew up in Instagram last year for their whimsical dresses and pastel colour palette. Led by former Wildfox Co-Founder, Kimberley Gordon, the Selkie brand prides itself in playing on imagination and fantasy to create their items.

Simone Rocha

Simona Rocha is a well-known name at Fashion Week and beyond, having established a recognisable brand with a focus on marrying delicate and rough textures. Rocha has also just released a collaboration with high street brand H&M, which you can read about here.

ERDEM

The ERDEM brand revolves around creating pieces that are timeless and romantic, promoting feminine aesthetics that make it a perfect match for the Royalcore trend. ERDEM’s clothing tells stories, giving the wearer limitless opportunities to live their best historical fantasy.

From the mind of best-selling author Julia Quinn and reimagined by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal), Netflix’s latest drama series Bridgerton is taking the site by storm. Maybe it’s the glamour of Regency-era London, or maybe the numerous steamy, romantic scenes, but something about Bridgerton has already made it the 5th largest Netflix original series to launch on the platform, and projections suggest it’ll be streamed in more than 67 million households within 28 days of its release.

Based around Julia Quinn’s first Bridgerton family book, The Duke And I, the series follows a close aristocratic family during the courting season, mostly revolving around Daphne Bridgerton, the debutante of the family and the Queen’s favourite. The series is narrated by Julie Andrews, the voice of an anonymous gossip writer that continuously finds the hidden scandals of high society, changing the course of the courting season like a 19th-century Gossip Girl. The 8-part series shows us romance, loss, heartbreak and competition among other events, as we form attachments to supporting stories as well as Daphne’s, put so gracefully before the backdrop of ornamented London architecture and modern music made sympathetic of the era.

As Rhimes’ first Netflix project, Bridgerton brought to life these beloved characters with new diversity, introducing a society that reflects our modern one in terms of race. The adaptation also brought new characters to the table, ones that provided more of a criticising tone to the closed and untouchable world of aristocracy – these characters include Queen Charlotte – the reason for the accepted diversity of the community, Lord Featherington – a man stuck in his gambling debts, and Marina Thompson – the Featherington’s distant, lower classed cousin who brings the reality of the outside world to high society, in the form of illegitimate pregnancy and a strive for independence.

The mix of Quinn’s brilliant characters and plot, with Rhimes’ production and Chris Van Dusen’s direction is what makes this series such a good watch. Among excitement, mystique and sensuality, the series keeps you on the edge of your seat with anticipation and thrill.

Another thing that makes the series so great is the costumes – wild hairstyles, long frocks and decorated bustiers fulfil the beauty and fashion that the Regency era is so famous for. The fashion of the series was done so well that Netflix recently announced a partnership with the British Fashion Council in the name of the series, commissioning three young designers to create costumes that matched the beauty and form of the period and series. The BFC scholars chosen were Aurélie Fontan, Edward Mendoza and Shanti Bell, whose beautiful pieces were then modelled by the show’s leading actresses Phoebe Dynevor, Nicola Coughlan, Adjoa Andoh, Claudia Jessie and Golda Rosheuval.

It seems likely that there will be another season of the series in the future, regarding its success and the numerous Bridgerton books that follow. We can only hope that we’ll see this period drama again, with even more romance, scandal and beauty than before.
