The ability to cram all of our possessions in one place while we’re on the go is a fabulous invention, so, why do we deprive an entire half of the population of its endless benefits, just because we decided it is a ‘feminine accessory’? This is the question being pondered by male-identifying and non-binary celebs and designers throughout the fashion industry. As stars like Jacob Elordi decide to leave strict gender codes at home and step out in stylish bags, is this a sign we’re edging towards genderless fashion for good?

At the fall/winter 2022 fashion weeks, gender-neutral accessorising was at the forefront of the runways. Designers from Gucci to Dominnico dressed male-identifying models in glittering bralettes and logo-covered purses as a way to pledge their allegiance to the gender-neutral fashion movement. Speaking to Refinery-29, designer Ed Curtis explained that he and other fashion designers are waving goodbye to strict gender codes, claiming he ‘can’t think of a practical reason why an accessory would need to be for one gender’.

Off the runway, Euphoria star Jacob Elordi has been spotted donning the genderless accessory. Elordi wore the iconic padded Bottega Veneta bag to the fashion house’s AW22 show this season. The padded purse has been popular among female stars like Rihanna, but Elordi demonstrated that males can pull off the look just as well.

As an expert in gender-neutral dressing, Harry Styles has unsurprisingly been a major advocate for reducing the stigma around males wearing bags. The star has been spotted multiple times wearing his go-to ‘Jackie’ purse by Gucci, proving the timeless piece can look good on anyone regardless of gender identity.

As our attitudes towards gender shift, our approach to fashion has to move with it. Gone are the days of ridiculing people for how they choose to express themselves. Fashion is an expression and an art form, it is not exclusive to any gender and we’re excited to see the fashion industry is taking this memo on board.

Harry has also been seen extending the Jackie strap over tan cords and a tee for a comfortable look that demonstrates the diversity and inclusivity of this little accessory.

Since Alessandro Michele took over the reins of the house, every collection has been a mix of avant-garde and archival elements studied in detail. The creative director has shown a unique ability to transform iconic pieces of the brand into contemporary masterpieces: the latest example is the favorite nineties bag of Lady Diana, iconic tote bag with its bamboo handles.

The bag, presented by the brand for the first time in 1991, was made famous by the Princess of Wales who was warned several times to wear it in its beige version, combined with different garments, from blazers to jeans and shirts.

The bag of Lady Diana was renamed by Gucci “Diana” to honor their most loyal fan. It is available in three sizes – small, medium and large – and seven colors (black, white, leather, emerald green, red, blue and pink).

The new version of the iconic Gucci bag with bamboo handles by Lady Diana also includes detachable leather straps in three fluo shades, to carry comfortably even with the shoulder strap, featuring a reworking of the straps which were historically used to keep the handles erect. The Gucci bag is also customizable with letters and symbols to be imprinted inside. There are many celebs that have already been conquered by the charm of this new version of the Gucci bag, protagonist of the looks of Lady Diana after the divorce with Carlo: Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and Elle Fanning were immortalized while showing off the tote bag between commitments.

Yet another proof that the charm of Lady Diana, a quarter of a century after her death, is still impossible to resist.

Virtual shows aren’t a novelty in the industry. But our conception of the role that a show fulfills within society is shifting, along with what is achievable through it. The narratives keep getting more creative, the clothes more functional and the visuals ever so stunningly unworldly. Bags for AW21 are no exception: functionality seemed to be the key essence that attracted designers for this season, and there have been many reinventions in the making.

There has been a influx of designers that reimagined fetishism within their collections, characterising many runways shows, from the Gucci Aria collection to Lemaire’s inventive take on pockets.

Compact black leather bags are still in and popularly used by Givenchy, Jil Sander and The Row, which are the antithesis of the maxi bags that just hit the runways. This undoubtedly creates a contrasting new category of androgynous fashion that appeals to ever so many customers, whilst bringing back a 70’s punk appeal that seems to be embraced by many designers this season. The only feminine styles are the reinterpretations of maxi pochettes by Isabel Marant, Fendi and Alberta Ferretti. We still can’t figure out why we still gravitate towards such uncomfortable bags which need to be held tighter than a precious gem, but they surely look stunningly pleasing for the eye. 

Some designers are studying the ergonomic functions of the body and calculating its movements accordingly to their functional and avant-garde designs, such as Alyx Studio. Wallets become unnecessary in a world that tends to distance itself away from the traditional conceptions of style, but minimalism finds a new resurgence that arises from an environmental crisis (despite it not being any environmentally conscious due to its spike in demand).

Coach and Hermès still embrace the more classical philosophy of fashion, with such an elegance in terms of their designs that reigns above all other designers, at least in this category.

Lastly, vibrant textures were spotted here and there through the most vibrant patterns, with psychedelic influences that only Versace and Prada know how to dominate.

Burberry has just dropped a massive advertising campaign to push its signature bag, the Olympia.

Now that we are all getting out and about again, the brand’s latest push recruits FKA twigs, Kendall Jenner and Shygirl to promote the over-the-shoulder accessory. In a statement, Creative Chief of Burberry Riccardo Tisci said:

“When designing the Olympia, I was thinking about creating the perfect form of a handbag – something that could capture the essence of femininity. So, for the campaign, I wanted to celebrate three incredible women in my life who embody the power and beauty of feminine energy: FKA twigs, Kendall and Shygirl. These women are amazingly talented and confident, and have a natural fierceness and determination to carve their own paths, each freely expressing their originality through their creativity.”

The brand hails these women as ‘modern goddesses’ wearing the Olympia in an ‘ancient world reimagined’. The bag takes on a beautifully classic, sculptural form in its crescent shape – a modern take on a timeless piece.

You’ll be able to pick one up at the series of Olympia-themed pop-ups scattered around department stores of the brand’s key retail partners – including Harrods, Goodman, Galaxy Macau and Nanjing Deji Plaza. With an assortment of Olympia varying in shapes, style and colours combined with the chance to experience the brand’s new AR initiative (which spotlights the craftmanship of Burberry and inspiration behind the accessory) the pop-ups are sure to be busy.
