]]> Succeeding the recent late-2022 release of her album SOS to all streaming platforms, SZA ends her hiatus and embarks on an artfully emotive climb into the lyrical stratosphere once more, following her break after the release of her 2017 album Ctrl. 

Her new album continually sits at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, holding its position for three weeks already as the top new album release. She also sits in the second spot for Billboard’s Artist 100 and is noted as having the hottest R&B song at the moment. Truly a testament to her phenomenally poetic lyricisms and industry-norm subversions.  

SOS assumedly sits within the landscape as an R&B/alt R&B album, however, SZA’s influences prove to stem from a variety of genres making the album an eclectic blend of sounds – with songs rooted in pop punk, rap and ballad-like pop music. 

Her confessional lyrics and soulful initiative to the genre have made SOS a prolific album of 2022 despite its late release in the year. 

SZA tells the Rolling Stones in a podcast interview for Rolling Stone Music Now that she was pejoratively apprehensive to release her album to the public, with fears in the reception of her as an artist – as a non-conformist creator in a rapid-fire strictly-traditional industry. 

Her fears can ultimately be debunked in the actuality of the reception of the album. Songs like ‘Kill Bill’ currently sit at around 150 million streams on Spotify, despite only being out since December. Surely this is indication enough that public appraisal was indeed laudatory?

The reverent adoration for her new album has virally sent it to platforms like TikTok, with snippets from her newly released songs as the backing to transitional trends/ and emerging new lyric-related trends, e.g. ‘Good Days’, ‘I Hate U’ and ‘Kill Bill’ have all generated a mass hype on the platform. It is apparent that the emotion behind the lyrics “I might kill my ex, not the best idea, his new girlfriend’s next, how’d I get here” within ‘Kill Bill’ has prompted a trend in which people lip sync to the audio. The viral capabilities of platforms like TikTok have meant the continual relevance of SZA’s album in the charts. 

A viral video that surfaced recently was a TikTok vox pop with an elderly woman in the subway somewhere in the US, she is asked to name her favourite new album and she speaks fondly of SOS and specifically the heart-wrenching meaning behind SZA’s song ‘Kill Bill’ – this generated a lot of traction on TikTok sparking positive comments of the community surrounding the new release.

Likewise, raking in around 65k views on TikTok, the artist who animated SZAs album art for alternate cover renditions went viral time lapsing his creative process.

Her inspiration for the album has many roots. Partially fuelled by her involvement with public ridicule but also through motifs of lost love. It is prolific to note that she sits as a woman of colour within a light-skin masculine-dominated genre and thus this album is a metaphorical departure from the “nice girl” archetype that is assumed of her. 

Following the release of her album, SZA is set to embark on her first North American arena tour, in February of this year. 

The artist has stated that this tour is her way of giving her audience a show that they deserve, whether that means playing a setlist of unreleased songs they’ve heard snippets of on Twitter or deep cuts of released songs. This 2023 tour is SZA’s method of appreciation after the long-anticipated (five years!) wait from her loyal fanbase. Simbiatu Abisola Abiola Ajikawo, better known as Little Simz, is angry and she refuses to bottle it up anymore. Instead, she’s channelled it into her brilliant fifth studio album NO THANK YOU masterfully lifting influences from R&B, gospel, soul, funk, reggae and blues to create a thoughtful album packed with interesting sounds. The album was released last year on the 12th December after being announced only the week prior. Despite its late release some critics have dubbed it the album of 2022 – and we can see why.

The leading lady in hip hop has been at the top of her game for some time now. Her 3rd album GREY Area released in 2019 was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and won Best Album at the Ivor Novello Awards and at the NME awards. Only two years ago she released her fourth studio album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert winning her the Mercury Prize in 2022 alongside huge praise from fans and critics alike. Despite her climbing success Simz felt pain and frustration after she had to pull her North American tour last year. As an independent artist the financial cost of the tour would have left her high and dry. 

NO THANK YOU, released on the independent label Forever Living Originals, how artists, especially artists of colour, often do not receive the salary or respect they deserve. Little Simz speaks out against this in a powerful way combing soulful instrumentals with bitingly clever lyrics to create a politically charged masterpiece that is as impactful as it is a joy to listen to. ‘Never cared about being immortalised’ is the opening line on the album and sets the tone for the whole album – Simz isn’t after fame or money she wants to make change through her music and bring joy to her listeners. 

On the opener ‘Angel’ Simz discusses stardom and how labels ‘don’t care if your mental is on the brink of somethin’ dark/As long as you’re cuttin’ somebody’s payslip’. The expert sampling of vocals to create an angelic sound is just what we’d expect from Simz’s long-time collaborator and childhood friend Inflo. Cleo Sol, who frequently sings back up and the chorus over the album, adds a soothing juxtaposition to Little Simz’s cool flow. The second track ‘Gorilla’ begins with an orchestral flare and incorporates glorious old school hip-hop beats with a sample from Jurassic 5 along with an ethereal gospel chorus. Simz oozes triumph and powerful as she delivers the line ‘rap’s last hope and the faith, I’m restorin’’. ‘Silhouette’ maintains the gospel vibes with soft choral oohs contrasting Simz anxious flows about persevering despite doubting herself – in the end she remains positive telling those who try to wrong her ‘your insecurity won’t break me down’. 

Simz’s anger is evident on the double entendre titled track ‘No Merci’ where she raps ‘You know that I’m unapologetically black’ to the gracefully mixed electronic beats that will make you want to move. The living West African drumbeats on the start of ‘X’ creates a startling contrast between the relaxed outro of the previous track. On ‘X’ Little Simz highlights the generational trauma of black people that will never leave despite a part of the community being able to achieve success. ‘Heart on Fire’ also continues the theme of artists being exploited with the punching refrain ‘My life is a blessing/ But it comes with the stresses’. ‘Broken’ is one of the most honest songs on the album with the falsetto chorus repeating ‘when you feel you’re broken and cannot fix it’ creating a trance-like drive whilst Simz raps about the struggles of trying to fix a broken system. The gentle instrumental towards the end of the song promises a future of hope and peace.

In the last three songs on the album have a lighter tone than the previous. The short but sweet ‘Sideways’ cleverly samples sped up vocals to create an enticing beat with a vintage sound. ‘Who Even Cares’ is almost psychedelic like the track has been mixed underwater. It displays Simz softer side with Cleo’s gorgeous chorus meshing with Simz’s laidback verse. The autotune on Simz’s vocals gives a relaxed feeling to the number – this will be the perfect summertime track for laying around in the park or on the beach on a hot day. The final track ‘Control’ is a stripped back piano number featuring only Simz’s rapping and a male gospel singer that tells a love story. It’s a charming ending to an album that gives its listener a lot to think on. 

Though Simz flits between moods of feeling comfortable in her artistry and anger caused by the struggles of being a black artist in a ruthless industry by the end of NO THANK YOU she emerges victorious having produced a superb hip-hop album that will push forward the music industry to change and influence other artists to speak out against injustice. We know that we’ll have these songs on repeat throughout the year.

]]> With 2022 coming to a close it’s time to reflect on all the tunes we’ve loved this year. We’ve sorted through the plethora of new releases to compile a list of the best that 2022 had to offer. From Drake to Beyoncé there’s no doubt that this year has been great for bangers – don’t forget to add them to your playlist! 

Carly Rae Jepsen – ‘Western Wind’

 2022 saw the return of the queen of synthpop. Carly released her 6th studio album, The Loneliest Time, in October much to the delight of her adoring fans. The lead single ‘Western Wind’, co-written by the ex-Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij, is a laidback banger that we can’t get out of our heads. The light congas, piano chords, and repetitive chant-like chorus are so soothing. 

The Weekend – ‘Sacrifice’

 What a year The Weeknd has had. In January the Canadian singer-songwriter released his 5th studio album, Dawn FM, which quickly rose to number 1 in over 10 countries. He’s also featured on some of our favourite tracks of the year and his tour next year is set to sell-out. Whilst the album gave us 4 superb singles the ‘80s-inspired ‘Sacrifice’ is the ultimate dance track this year. 

Beyonce – ‘Break My Soul’

 Queen Bey gifted us Renaissance in July and we haven’t stopped playing it since. The album seamlessly blends disco and house to give us the club tunes we need and the single ‘Break My Soul’ is the perfect track to dance away the blues to. Honorary mention to CUFF IT – choosing one song was so tough! 

FKA Twigs ft. The Weekend – ‘Tears In The Club’

 Our favourite pop princess FKA Twigs dropped her horoscope-inspired mixtape Caprisongs in January and along with it came ‘Tears in the Club’. Catchy, fun, and oh so dancey – what is there not to love? The Weeknd’s verse is also oh-so smooth. 

Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa & Young Thug – ‘Potion’

With this supergroup, it’s no surprise that this single was one of our anthems of the summer. ‘Potion’ is the second song Calvin and Dua have teamed up on after their hit ‘One Kiss’ back in 2018. The single is a masterclass in how to produce a bop. After all, who could resist that groovy bass? 

Danger Mouse and Black Thought (ft. MF Doom) – ‘Belize’

 Danger Mouse and Black Thought’s collaboration album, Cheat Codes, brought us the moody old-school hip-hop tracks we never knew we were craving. The album includes several fab guess spots from familiar names such as A$AP Rocky, Run the Jewels, and Joey Badass, but the late great MF Doom on ‘Belize’ is the standout.

Charli XCX ft. Rina Sawayama – ‘Beg For You’

When it comes to songs you want to belt out in the club no one does it like Charli XCX. Charli dropped the short but sweet Crash in March bringing a whole new set of songs to our party playlists. ‘Beg For You’ is exactly the energetic infectious tune we love.

]]> Yesterday welcomed the long anticipated 2022 Fashion Awards, presented by Diet Coke. Prize winners included Valentino’s creative designer Pierpaolo Piccioli for designer of the year, Bella Hadid for model of the year, and creative director and stylist Katie Grand took home the Isobella Blow award. Sinead Burke, Raf Simons and Alessandro Michele, were among the 15 figures honoured as leaders of change this year in the fashion industry.

As the glamorous attendees took stage on the red carpet to get their photographs taken this was the perfect time for us to decide our favourite looks of the night.

Kristen McMenamy

There is no guessing as to why Pierpaolo Piccioli received the designer of the year award after seeing the Valentino looks at last nights red carpet. The old myth of red and pink clashing was certainly not true last night as Valentino’s iconic colour of the year dressed Kristen McMenamy head-to-toe as she walked along the red carpet.

Florence Pugh

Yet another win for designer of the year as Florence Pugh was certainly a sight to see at the awards. Trains were very popular this year and we might go so far as to say this was our favourite. The look was all tied in with her slicked back hair and matching red lips.

Winnie Harlow

A fabulous look from Harlow in Iris Van Herpen Couture last night. Sheer has been trending and last night showed us it very much still is. Alongside Winnie, celebs such as Rita Ora and Lila Moss also graced the carpet in sheer gowns.

Jourdan Dunn

Dunn wears a ruffled train and sheer bodice gown from Stephane Rolland. The gown, part of his haut couture FW 22 collection is a symbol of the current fashion.

Simone Ashley

Simone Ashley looks radiant in a beautiful, sparkling 16 Arlington gown. Hoods were a frequent sight at the awards and we can see why. Predicted as a popular hairstyle for SS 23, Simone is ahead of the game with the wet hair look.

Yasmin Finney

Yasmin Finney wowed in a gorgeous Harris Reed design. The exaggerated shoulder is bigger than ever and we love it. The figure-hugging silhouette and sleek black velvet design of the dress makes Finney a picture of elegance.

Quannah Chasinghorse

A sparkling jumpsuit from Stella McCartney covered Quannah head-to-toe in sequins. Super seasonal and drop dead gorgeous. A five-star fit.

Jodie Turner Smith

Jodie Turner Smith played host for the awards and she also looked incredible doing so. Her Gucci gown was unmissable in its lime green toned and embellished sheer fabric.

Paloma Elsesser

Paloma Elsesser wore a gorgeous black corseted gown created by Dilara Findikoglu. Once again, sheer fabrics have been plastered all over the red carpet this year, but we are not complaining. 

Adut Akech

A stunning look from Adut. Keeping it simple in the best ways possible, the two-piece from Nensi Dojaka is everything that the fashion awards is about.

FKA Twigs

This year we are definitely train spotting. A high fashion look worn by FKA Twigs from Rick Owens and Moncler. Key take aways are miniature ruffles, trains and puffer styled jackets.

Elsa Hosk

Dressed in a Miu Miu design for Flannels, this double belted two-piece is spectacular. A dazzling little number we will be sure to remember.

Maya Jama

Incredible as always, Maya Jama delights in a black Sabina Bilenko Couture gown.Featuring a forward slit in the skirt, pulled in waistline and angled hat, we love Maya’s style for the red carpet.

Raye

For Raye’s appearance last night, she turned heads in a custom Bradley Sharpe. We love it all, the gloves, the velvet, the shoulders. Very sleek and very elegant. The touch of feathered lashes and slick high bun gives this look a Black Swan essence that is high fashion to the core.

Irina Shayk

Shayk wears a full-length sequined sustainable H&M gown. The gown features as one of H&M’s innovative metaverse collection pieces and we can’t wait to see the rest.

Christine Quinn

The Selling Sunset star, Christine Quinn, wore a sensational gothic maxi gown. Paired with long black sheer gloves and a scarf which trailed behind her, we fell in love with this look.

]]> If you have recently heard the word gorpcore and have been left confused by its meaning, you are in the right place. Gorpcore is the new aesthetic taking the Gen Z world by storm. The acronym stands for the classic hiking snacks- ‘Good Ol’ Raisons and Peanuts’ – as the trend stems from the fashion worn while exploring the great outdoors.  Coined in 2017 by The Cut (https://www.thecut.com/2017/05/new-fashion-trends-normcore-gorpcore.html ), gorpcore originally prevailed in men’s fashion, however, we are glad to tell you gorpcore has finally emerged in womenswear. 

The charm of gorpcore is ironic; conventionally unstylish clothes…are stylish! This trend flips the fashion world on its head and opens up the possibility for almost endless outfits. Practicality, utility, and comfort are just as important as style for capturing the true nature of this aesthetic. Brands like Patagonia and Arc’teryx are closely linked with the aesthetic and classic sports brands like Nike and New Balance have proven their place within the trend. Dress it up or dress it down, there are so many ways to bring the adventure of extreme sports into your wardrobe. Let’s take a look to see how some of our favourite women are sporting the not-so-stylish, stylish looks of gorpcore. 

Megan Trong

Where to start talking about this fit. This is head-to-toe gorpcore glam and it doesn’t get much better in our opinion. Megan Trong wears her The Basement x New Balance 2002r, which she matches with a reflective waterproof jacket. Both trainers and jacket are a moss green colour, very fitting choice for gorp! Her ribbed skirt gives off a metallic shine which ties in with the reflecting properties of her jacket. Not to mention her sunglasses make her look as if she is fresh off the slopes, but now ready for business. All we can say is if you are looking for gorpcore inspiration, Megan knows what she is doing.

Betsy Johnson

Betsy Johnson is all over gorpcore. This all black, oversized outfit is super chic. Cargo pants remain really popular this year so you should have no problem recreating this style. Giving Johnson the ‘matrix look’, her sunglasses and headband are perfect for multi-use, whether that be climbing up a hill or strutting down Oxford Street. 

Bella Hadid

Bella has recently been showing us she is a big fan of the midi skirt and sport jacket combo. We are loving her take on gorpcore and think she is creating some iconic looks in the process. Her playful use of opposing silhouettes has high fashion written all over it. 

Betsy Johnson, Caity Baser and Billie Eilish

These women have a similar take on the trend and are expressing the grungier side of gorpcore. Baggy sweats, cargos, and parachute pants are paired with baggy t-shirts and/or tight long sleeve tops and chunky everyday trainers. Dark and earthy colours are definitely sitting in the driver’s seat for gorpcore this season. This style of gorpcore works great for casual, everyday wear. 

Kicki Yang Zhang

The ultimate gorpcore look. We love the simplicity and elegance of this fit. Could you look any better at the top of a mountain? Probably not. Keep an eye on Kicki for more of her showstopping looks.

Colour and Geometric Liner

Starting off more subtle we have coloured graphic liners and black graphic eye art. Spice up your Autumn Makeup with pops of coloured liner or go geometric with jagged black shapes. These techniques definitely give your look an edge, however, can be achieved in a smaller amount of time. 

Stamps and stencils are perfect for achieving these effects if you lack the confidence to start recreating these looks. We have found some useful products to help you begin.

Full Face Art

We are going full-blown face art for these next looks. Surrealism, Pop Art, and AI are huge influences for makeup this season. With Halloween having passed, we are not quite ready to put down our liners and brushes and neither are makeup artists and influencers like Sophia Sinot. The creativity is endless with graphic liner and your face is your canvas for this trend! We have picked some of our favourite creations from this season so far.

Embellishments

Why keep makeup 2D when we can make it 3D, right? These women are all over the trend of embellishing their eyes, cheeks and foreheads with rhinestones, glitter, and stickers. Let’s not forget makeup is all about self-expression and having fun. Not only are these women showing off their talent and creative expression, but they also look amazing!

We also had to mention the TikTok trend of using temporary tattoos as a quick and easy way to take your makeup to the next level. What better way to show you are feeling extra than swapping out your classic wings for butterfly wings.

]]> Calling all Jlo fans. The 25th of November 2022 marks the 20-year anniversary since the release of This Is Me… Then. And Jlo has been treating all of her Instagram followers to reminisce about some of her iconic looks within the last 20 years as a mark of celebration. After all, what is more synonymous than Jlo and fashion icon. The queen of bling just announced that she is releasing a new album called “This is me Now”. The alb will mark J.Lo’s first album in eight years, following A.K.A. in 2014. The tracks on the 2023 album, whose exact release date has not yet been revealed, are described as “plaintive, confessional songs, reflections on the trials of her past, upbeat jams celebrating love and sex.”

From tracksuits to Knee-high boots, Jlo was no stranger to all the beloved styles of the early 2000s. We love reflecting on these gorgeous y2k looks and thought we would share them with you to honour Lopez’s great achievement. 

Unreleased images shot by Tony Duran show us the hype of the 2000s style. Head-to-toe millennial pink, Lopez was always wearing peak 2000s styles which gave her status as not only a superstar but a fashion icon. 

Straight from the 2003-time capsule, will this look ever go out of fashion? A round of applause for Jenny from the block, please. This look confirms what we all thought we knew; Jenifer Lopez is the ultimate sassy and sexy icon. 

Jlo loved her headscarves, floppy hats, berets, and beanies. Special shout out to her for her use of hats and headwear which is still celebrated 20 years on. From baby pink knitted berets to chainmail headscarves, we are still waiting to see if there is anything she can’t pull off. 

The iconic image of Jlo in fur. This is a look that should be kept safe for generations to come to gaze upon lovingly. Her aviator glasses and fur combination screams confidence and empowerment. Lopez has always dressed in a female-empowering style, and we thank her for her services.

MTV’s Total Request Live in 2001 saw Jennifer Lopez grace the stage in classic y2k low-rise leather trousers. I’m sure spectators will still remember her performance as well as her outfit. We also adore the cropped American Football Jersey Lopez is wearing, and of course, her classic hoop earrings. 

At the peak of Juicy Couture and fashionable athleisure, Jennifer Lopez was the poster girl for matching low-rise tracksuits. The trend of matching tracksuits remains a nostalgic moment of the early 2000s and we can certainly give Lopez some credit for the craze. 

Reflecting upon these images tells us Jlo has really managed to pull off everything she has worn. From hyper-feminine styles to hyper-sexy fits, the 2000s saw her style versatility. Although she may have always been adaptable with her style, they all have something in common; they remain iconic and memorable. 

Excitingly, along with her inviting us to reminisce on past looks, she has also released This Is Me… Then on vinyl for the first time ever which is available now! One thing we are sure of is our love for Jlo- does not cost a thing.

Better known on Instagram as Kickiyangz, we are obsessed with her fit of the week. Kicki describes her look as “giving clown core and I love it” and we certainly love it too. The tie, shirt, tights, and chunky loafer combo give off a schoolgirl aesthetic with a modern twist as she matches argyle checks on her tights and sweater vest. We love the added shades of cool blue from her utility, cargo-style skirt, and fleeced coat. 

Maya Jama

Maya is driving us mad with this super stylish racer look. The House of Sunny fit is giving serious formula 1 vibes and my gosh, does Maya Jama look amazing in it (career change?). She’s paired the leather ensemble with a cropped white top which allows the two-piece to make a huge statement. We’ll be sure to catch Jama on the track soon giving Lewis Hamilton a run for his money. 

Bebe Rexha

This week Rexha gave us futuristic fashion as she attended the MTV EMA Awards. The exaggerated shoulders, corseted bodice, and teardrop cut-outs are fresh, and we can’t get enough. The metallic aesthetic of her fit catches the light subtly and allowed her to shine even brighter during her performance.

Winnie Harlow

Harlow may have been courtside, but she was sporting full early 2000s. Shown supporting her partner at his basketball game this week, Winnie Harlow could be seen covered in diamontes and jewels. Layered with sparkling bracelets, Harlow also carried a small, glittered handbag and wore bejewelled jeans. The return of the noughties casual tank top and oversized fur coat gave this look the edge that we love to see. 

Kylie Jenner

This week we are praising Kylie for her fearless look at the opening night of the Thierry Mugler Archive Exhibition in the Brooklyn Museum. The skin-tight sheer black catsuit covered Miss Jenner and at the same time revealed her in an intimate fashion. We loved this look and think it captures the essence of high fashion in one glance. 

Ella Snyder

We love the glam and casual combo Snyder gave us this week. The light, delicate satin gown paired with the leather dark brown boots and aviator jacket to match gets the stamp of approval from us. Embracing the colour of the season and jumping on the fur collar trend Ella Snyder is right on trend. Delicacy meets functionality. 

Khleopatre

It is official. We are in love with this look. The fit is elegant and glamorous and gives the catsuit a new meaning with the cheetah print. Khleopatre’s back is revealed in the black sheer catsuit which she shows off to the camera.  This truly is a look which we will not be able to stop thinking about.

Rosalia

We are obsessed with the sleek shades and effortless style of Rosalia’s rollerblading look. The star combines the practicality of sport with head-turning fashion as she rolls around the streets. The comfort and style combination is definitely in and we are happy to see Rosalia embrace the outdoors in her fashion.

Sav Hudson

Hudson shows off her style as she poses in front of the Hollywood sign. We are big fans of her long black trench coat paired with her colourful trainers. We are happy to see another beige, argyle print sweater being showcased this week on Hudson as well as Kicki. 

Bia

Wow. Our last look is certainly by no means behind the rest. Bia incorporates a hyper feminine pink look with classic biker style leather. We love her baby pink heeled cowgirl boots and matching half moon shoulder bag. The figure-hugging look is styled with a baggy biker jacket giving us a revival of the leather trend.

We are seeing feathers everywhere. One of the trend’s biggest fans is Khleopatre who has shown no intention of stopping. And we do not blame her after all, as this is a trend that is turning heads. From being a key style in the 1920s symbolising glamour and party and re-emerging again in the 1960s as a stamp of freedom and elegance, this season combines all four. Feathers are being used in modest and subtle hues this season to trim dresses, trousers, and jumpsuits. Accessories and shoes are no exception to this trend and can be found fully encapsulated in the style.
