Tired of Basic Eyeliner? Here Are The Best New Trends to Try Out

Eyeliner isn’t the easiest makeup product to master. But if you’ve managed to master it and are looking for some inspo to take it to the next level, here are a few slightly more challenging looks for you to try out.

Neon Liner

Knowing what type of eyeliner suits your eye shape the best is crucial, but a lot of people seem to overlook the fact that colour can be just as important. Sure, black eyeliner is foolproof; made for everyone, but it’s about time we started to branch out of our comfort zone a little bit. Neon liner can be a good place to start experimenting. Itdoesn’t require too much time or effort, just a couple of super-bright neon liners.

Singer-songwriter, Kehlani, was photographed wearing a daring neon turquoise wing. The bold colour complemented her skin tone perfectly and really made her eyes stand out.

Jenesis Alonso Lopez shared a tutorial of this neon liner trend to TikTok, where she used Glisten Cosmetics’ Wet Liner Palette to create a bright orange eyeliner look.

Negative-Space Liner

This style involves taking everything you’ve learnt about eyeliner and doing the exact opposite. If you’re used to putting eyeshadow all over your eyelid, we’d highly recommend flipping over your technique to create this unique look – especially for any girlies without hooded eyes.

Jade Thirwall sported this stunning pink look on Adam Burrell’s Instagram. A simple cat eye paired with a pink liner that ran parallel to the black liner. Keeping the eyelid bare makes for a much more sultry look.

MAC Cosmetics also joined this trend, posting a picture of a light blue negative-space look on Instagram, created using the Colour Excess Gel Eye Liner.

Slick Woods also hopped on the trend with a slightly darker, more grungy look.

@xthuyle shared a tutorial on her take on this trend, showing that it’s not as difficult as it looks.

Subtly-Bedazzled

Eye makeup looks don’t only have to include makeup. Face jewels can transform your whole look while still keeping it sophisticated. The best thing about this trend is you can use them however you want, for example, Steph Hui (@stxph.h on Instagram) decided to take inspo from the negative space trend while still adding her own little touch with a few face jewels by the outer corner of the eye.

Britney Savannah (@beautybypeach on TikTok) shared with her followers a video of her experimenting with face jewels, showing just how versatile this trend is.

Freestyle Patterns

This is where we dive into the deep end of experimental makeup and test just how creative you can get. You can use any product – liquid, gel, powder – to create these stunning abstract patterns across your eyes (or even your whole face!). You can take this trend in any direction you feel like, but if you’re feeling a little lost, here are a few looks to take inspo from.

@orane.ae posted a picture to Instagram of a stunning freestyled makeup look. The use of wavy patterns creates a super unique illusion on her face.

Abstract Shapes

This trend requires you to utilise shapes and different colours around your eye to create something new and fresh. Choosing colour combos and shapes is hard and it will take some time to master it, so the best way to do it would be to start simple and build your way up from there.

@aoifeartist on TikTok chose to go for a very pop-art-inspired look, dotting circles around her eye. The chosen colours complemented each other beautifully, resulting in an audacious, yet vibrant look.

@mandyretsuko on TikTok also gave it a go, playing with blues, pinks and greens to create a striking, colourful look.
