Marc Jacobs x Devon Lee Carlson Has Arrived

Internet ‘It’ girl, Devon Lee Carlson and timeless designer, Marc Jacobs have joined forces to create a Y2K-inspired capsule collection. Released on Devon’s birthday (August 3rd), the collection dropped with an accompanying campaign shot by Conor Cunningham (@Mescondi). Devon’s vibrant and charismatic personality shines through the photographs. The shots showcase the bold colours and prints of the collection in the dynamic, early 2000s style of fashion photography. The images also ensure to include Devon’s loveable dog and inspiration for logos of the collection, Marty. The collaboration effectively connects with heaven by Marc Jacobs, the 1990s subculture inspired collection of more affordable designer pieces.

The capsule contains eight items, including clothing and accessories, with prices ranging from £85 to £230. The collection’s aesthetic references trends of the early 2000s and embodies Devon’s style: a combination of minimalist, 90s silhouettes with the loud colours and bold prints of the 1970s and 2000s.

These items have been created with a transitional power to be styled from summer to winter, as baby tees can be layered with oversized, puffy jackets and slip dresses to keep you cool during warm days, or can be paired with tights and knee-high boots as temperatures begin to slip.

One of the most comfortable items, a matching cropped hoodie and straight-leg sweatpants are adorned with redesigned Marc Jacobs monograms to include Devon’s dog, Marty. The lowrise sweats and cropped hoodie can easily be recognised as the silhouette of the early 2000s, when athleisure was becoming mainstream and comfort became a priority.

Another matching set is the tangerine ‘shrunken shorts’ and Devon baby tee. A staple of Devon’s style, the baby tee is easy to style and an accessible garment. The loud orange colour and cyber Y2K print pair perfectly as a set, or can be styled separately with simple, chic denim or complementary blue and green tones.

Often worn by Devon, the babydoll silhouette has also been included in the capsule. A chic black slip dress with baby blue ruffled detail can be transformed from casually running errands with trainers or boots, to a late-night out in strappy heels.

Inspired again by the 1990s, the Devon charm purse is a formal mini bag, with fun detailing of colourful bubble letter charms spelling out ‘MARC JACOBS’.

Pieces are already selling out from the collection; this collaboration is an example of the power Devon has garnered through her various social media platforms.

The collaboration embodies the transition of trendy fashion from the 1990s to the early 2000s, both of which are eras of reference in Devon’s style. Collaborating with Marc Jacobs who was fueling fashion trends of those periods, the collection references a wide array of returning trends. From babydoll dresses and chunky chains of 1990s grunge to bubblegum pink, bold and bright early 2000s logomania, the capsule contains some of the most beloved fashion references which remain fashionable today.
