Paris Fashion Week: Elegant Eighties

Paris Fashion Week was muted and sleek – elegance and sophistication was the motif of the event, teamed with the empowering 80s silhouette – a slight move away from the ostentatious colours and bold prints of Milan. Below are Voir’s picks of the must-see looks from Paris.

Balmain A/W18

Givenchy

Did someone say Berlin? Maybe not audibly, but Clare Waight Geller’s Fall 2018 collection for Givenchy oozed a flashy glamour reminiscent of the Cold War era city. Classic 80s silhouettes of assertive shoulders and cinched in waists were seen throughout and many outfits were dressed down with slouched cowboy style boots.

Valentino

Valentino A/W18

Valentino brought a modern elegance to Paris Fashion Week with designer Pierpaolo Piccioli creating the collection on the foundations of ‘assertive not aggressive’. This notion beautifully allowed for the collection to embrace and empower all women, with flowing lines, flowers and scalloped edges – sophistication at its very best.

Balenciaga

Balenciaga AW18

Modern was taken to a whole new level by Demna Gvasalia for Balenciaga’s Fall 2018 collection. Fittings were tossed aside in favour of 3-D printers which created moulds of the models – a futuristic start for a futuristic show. The collection itself contained vivid colours and extravagant layering to reinforce the post-human vibe.

Balmain

Balmain AW18

Balmain’s show at Paris Fashion Week saw the brand take a big step in to the future – 32 years to be exact. Holographic materials and exaggerated shoulders were unquestionably sci-fi and were fundamental in realising designer Olivier Rousteing’s 2050 vision for the collection.

Haider Ackerman

Electric hues of greens, oranges and blues took centre stage in Haider Ackerman’s show. Floating dresses created a sense of fragility but there was still an air of assertiveness in the exaggerated shoulders of the tailored blazers, giving the delicateness a cool edge.

Hermes

Hermes AW18

Leather was everywhere on the Hermes catwalk and created a tough and sexy look. Layered coats with cinched in waists were on trend with the return of the 80s silhouette and created a sleek and sophisticated collection.
