England’s most loved (or hated, depending on the time) football player and Spice Girls’ very own Posh Spice became the it-couple of the 90s and 00s, with anything as small as an innocent kiss in a BMW making the front page of newspapers everywhere. And with Netflix’s documentary ‘Beckham’ holding the #1 series spot in the UK days after its release, there’s been a collective melancholic reminisce of the couples’ cultural significance. Inevitably then, we’re immediately thinking of Victoria and David’s headline-generating coordinating outfits.

Since they started dating in 1997 until now, the Beckhams have always been bold and unafraid in their style choices– truly as British as it gets. Whether it was a black-and-white moment, denim on denim, or their iconic purple wedding attire, they were (and are) role models for couple dressing. If you´re craving more Beckham nostalgia or simply want a trip down memory lane, here are the most iconic matching outfits they pulled off.

Engagement Announcement, 1998

In all-black looks showing off the engagement ring David chose for Victoria, this was the beginning of their matching outfits journey. Many doubted the relationship would last, but they’re living proof that couples who dress together, stay together.

During the 1998 World Cup, the Beckhams stepped out in their signature black palette. Only this time, David was wearing a patterned sarong on top of his obsidian trousers. Although now we think of it as one of his most iconic moments, at the time it caused controversy and outrage everywhere. It was even on the cover page of The Sun with the headline “Beckham has got his Posh frock on”. The Jean Paul Gaultier piece was a gift from Victoria, which just proves they were both ahead of their time.

Leather Co-Ords, 1999

Although they were still in the early stages of their romance at this point, is there anything as powerful as matching Gucci leather jumpsuits to prove how serious your bond is? They wore their Matrix-inspired co-ords (the film had just been released) to the Versace Club party, which Victoria still has mixed feelings about. During a 2022 interview in “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen”, she said: “I mean it haunts me. It does haunt me, but I love it. We really thought about it and there was a naïveté to it that was just so sweet.”

The Wedding, 1999

The famous Beckham wedding at Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin had paparazzi and fans barricading the outside gates, impatient for a glimpse of the couple before OK! magazine’s coverage of the event dropped later (the celebrity news outlet paid one million for exclusive access). In one of their most iconic style moments to date, they chose Antonio Berardi purple outfits to cut the cake. Even a 4-month-old Brooklyn had a purple suit of his own. In the Netflix documentary, Victoria commented “it was fun, we weren’t worried about what people were going to say. You just want to express yourself, that’s just who we were,” she said. David laughs about it now: “I’m trying to think back to when I decided to wear a purple suit, and I don’t know when that happened… But what were we thinking?”

Reigning in the new decade in their London home, David matched Victoria’s corseted jumpsuit and animal print boots with a glossy long brown jacket of his own (very Matrix-Inspired still).

Marching White, 2003

For their MTV Movie Awards in LA, the couple went for all-white ensembles with matching crystal adornments. David wore a sparkly cross necklace and Victoria opted for shiny embellishments on her dress, a subtle detail that reveals the careful thought and attention they put into their outfits. We’re not surprised they headed to Diddy’s iconic white party afterward, but it is shocking that they managed to look so put together while raising two kids.

Blazer Boom, 2003

It was summer in Japan, halfway through the year, when the Beckhams’ style became as sophisticated and polished as the nickname Posh Spice suggests. With matching blazers dressed down with jeans, this was the start of Becks’ more tailored suits and Victoria’s current preference for corsets, formal stilettos, and cigarette pants.

A Navy Royal Wedding, 2018

Britain’s pop culture royalty chose navy glamorous attire for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. Victoria wore a structured dress from her eponymous brand and a netted pillbox hat, whilst the ex-football player chose a formal suit to match his wife. The dark pieces are not unlike the ones they wore to Kate and Will’s nuptials seven years prior, proving that if anyone can do formal wear, it’s the Beckhams.

For a casual movie night with Victoria’s sister Louise, the couple arrived separately– but in the same Canadian tuxedos. In an Instagram story, the fashion designer wrote “I thought those days were over,”, playfully adding “I got dressed first fyi!!!”. Although Britney and Justin did it first in 2001, this serendipitous accident shows how in sync the couple are– even after 24 years of marriage.

As the UK rounds off its fourth week WFH, we celebrate the birthday of the ultimate Queen of a sultry stare, sublime style and serious sass. WAG to everyone’s , fashionista and 20% of one of the world’s most successful girl groups, Victoria Beckham has been nothing short of iconic. Since the moment she graced us with her all-black ensemble in the 1996 debut video for the Spice Girls: Wannabe she has set the tone for fashion. Wow, we suddenly feel old.

With a net worth of £100 million, the winner of the People’s Choice Award Fashion Icon in 2018 and a self-titled luxury designer brand to her name, it seems fitting to celebrate Posh’s latest lap around the sun by looking back at her most iconic fashion moments. Spoiler: we’re here for ALL of them. Happy Bday VB!

Don’t lie…we all secretly loved it when these two co-ordinated. Posh marked Valentine’s Day in 1998 with a strong statement: all you need is a good bra and blazer. And quite frankly, we agree.

This Julien MacDonald dress is very much giving us ‘wearing lingerie as outerwear’ vibes, safe to say VB was ahead of her time with this one.

This bright green cropped jacket pops perfectly against the all black. A fitting outfit to show off at the Chanel Cruise Show. We are almost positive Karl Lagerfield would have approved.

We miss the days when it was cool to show your brightly coloured bra underneath your dress…those were simpler times. VB is giving off serious Girl Boss/ Barbie vibes at the 2007 MTV Music Awards. Just look at that pixie cut.

Any outfit paired with a Hermès is already doing wonders. It’s also nice to see Posh in something other than black…even if it is hot pink.

This look arguably marked the next chapter in VB’s style. Wearing her own collection, in her favourite colour with new, simple designs, this elegant gown would come to set the tone for her future creations.

This beaut hot red gown was from her A/W 2014 collection. Not many people can pull off that dress length but of course, VB manages it.

Forget low rise jeans (who even wears them anyway?!), we’re all about this low rise skirt from VB’s S/S 2017 catwalk collection; the bonus? It’s VELVET! Yes, please.

When the coronavirus crisis occurred, it has to be said, the beauty industry opened their hearts, pockets and minds to aiding the pandemic that has panicked the world. Yes, mass charitable contributions and fundraising efforts have been produced by some of the biggest brands out there during this unprecedented time, but give credit where it’s due to the beauty communities doing the most. Not only have the donations and discounts been appreciated, but the usage of resources to create necessary materials such as hand sanitiser cannot go unnoticed. And just when you thought they had provided all the help they could give, in comes the creation of Beauty United, founded and lead by Beautycon CEO, Moj Mahdara.

Mohdara has rounded up some of the headlining beauty and wellness brands on the scene including Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop, MAC cosmetics, Too Faced, KKW Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics just to name a few. That’s right, and she’s even got makeup and skincare newcomer Victoria Beckham Beauty on board too. This squad of over 40 of the biggest labels in beauty are on a mission to help those in need on the frontline. How will they do this you ask? Two ways. Firstly, they aim to support and encourage – as well as contribute to – the existing Frontline Responders Fund, hoping to help them reach their target of $10 million to be used for protective gear and medical transport. Additionally, the brands will be doing as much as they can to personally produce beauty materials in their own factories for frontline workers in need.

Their first ploy was the Jacob Javitz Center in New York, which previously used for large scale conventions and the home to Beautycon, is now a makeshift hospital housing over 225 COVID-19 patients manned by the military.

Mahdara set out Beauty United’s founding reasons stating, “I stand in solidarity with beauty and wellness founders to mobilize the resources we have to support doctors, nurses, and all the healthcare workers on the front lines of this pandemic. We are resolved to support in collective actions that can have a big global impact. Now is the time to be UNITED.”

Having been up and running less than a week, they’ve accumulated over 3,000 followers on Instagram and it has to be said this is one unity that is going above and beyond to help those who need it most. With another season of fashion weeks drawing to a close, and despite the somewhat sombre mood that swept the fashion capitals from New York to Paris, the Autumn/Winter 2020 catwalks offered plenty of food for thought on how to get dressed come next autumn, with a wealth of trends unfolding fresh off the runway.

Leather

Leather is a winter wardrobe mainstay season after season, but a plethora of AW20 collections explored new styles and silhouettes. Coach offered a lesson is layering leather, with colour-blocked leather culottes, midi-skirts and button-down shirts worn under pastel cardigans, oversized trench coats and shearling jackets. Hermès horse-jumping-inspired show featured supple leather ensembles in buttery shades, while Gabriela Hearst’s foray into leather came in the form of a caramel-coloured puff-sleeve leather dress.

Fringing

Fringing appeared in generous measures on the catwalks at all four fashion weeks but was particularly prevalent in Milan, where pleats were chopped up into fringe at Prada and Salvatore Ferragamo coated black dresses with golden trimmings, while Boss and Jil Sander sent iterations of silk-fringed evening dresses down their respective runways. At Bottega Veneta, Daniel Lee – arguably the most celebrated designer in the industry today – unveiled myriad shredded designs, with dresses finished with acidic lime green tassels and an updated take on the brand’s coveted woven pouch bag featuring exaggerated fringe.

Capes

The outerwear option du jour, billowing capes were ubiquitous across the four cities, with generously-cut shapes bringing a sense of sartorial drama to the catwalks. Michael Kors championed blanket dressing with an abundance of cashgora cape coats served up in cosy fabrics and warming winter colour palettes, while at JW Anderson knitted capes and layers of tinsel-trimming belled out from the shoulders of dresses.

Checks

The collective infatuation among designers for checks was unfading this season, manifesting itself in abundant iterations of tartan, gingham and heritage checks. In New York, Claudia Li’s translucent vinyl pleated-midi and blazer combination came in punchy pink gingham, while Monse dipped into mismatched tartan with skirts secured by safety pins and worn with punkish lace-up boots. Across the Atlantic at London Fashion Week, Burberry returned to its roots with remixed heritage checks in innovative cuts, and Shrimps gave the print a regal touch in a potent orange, pink and green colourway.

Chocolate Brown

Brown is the new black – at least according to the AW20 runways. Chocolatey shades are solidifying their place in the sartorial stratosphere, firmly entrenching their place in the palette of neutrals that have dominated the catwalks and streets for the past few seasons. Chocolate-coloured outerwear seems to be emerging as an autumn/winter wardrobe essential, tackled with aplomb at Victoria Beckham and Emilia Wickstead, while A.W.A.K.E Mode offered a quilted velvet version with an exaggerated collar. At Jil Sander, a bell-sleeved leather shirt with matching pants was rendered head-to-toe in the shade, while Christopher Kane swathed a pleated bra-dress from the chest down in the sweet hue.

Equestrian Trappings

An affluent array of designers paid homage to equestrian style and turning out bourgeois tailoring this season, with Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski’s show for Hermès plunging into the brand’s heritage for a show centred entirely around the sport. Elsewhere, Hedi Slimane continued his three-season-running ode to the ‘70s bourgeois French girl at Celine, in the form of equestrian-style knee-high boots, horse-bit belts and gold-chain accessories, this time injected with a bohemian edge, meanwhile Shrimps’ regal-inspired show was populated with tartan Victorian jackets worn with riding pants and silk foulards.

Gothic Glam

A certain darkness hung over the collections at Valentino – where floods of black replaced last season’s explosions of colour – and Anna Sui – whose horror film-inspired collection gave way to burnout velvet and vampire-esque leather – as if to reflect the sombre shadow over fashion week of the Coronavirus crisis and the ongoing conversation around fashion’s negative impact on the environment. Showgoers at Paco Rabanne witnessed a procession of decadent embellishment, ornate tapestry dresses and a play on dress as armour in the form of chain-mail dresses in a collection that explored medieval dress codes. At Rodarte, gothic glam met romanticism in eerily beautiful silhouettes that married dark energy with delicate details from puff sleeves and tiered ruffles to floral-print silks and embroidery.

Iridescence

The runways were equally awash iridescence and sparkling ensembles to lift the winter mood and see us through the party season. Rejina Pyo gave high-sheen glamour an office-attire twist, pairing a pearly puff-shouldered blouse with a sleek wool midi-skirt and knee-high boots. Others presented an inundation of red carpet-appropriate attire and party-ready bedazzled ball gowns – Julien Dossena reinterpreted Paco Rabanne’s signature chain-mail silhouette with a thread of fantastical glamour; Erdem injected a dose of 1920s glam into a silver dress decorated with tiered embroidery; and Halpern wrapped models in shimmering metallics with statement sleeves.

The world of runway shows and designer collections can sometimes feel like a distant fantasy reserved for those who have managed to rise through the ranks of the fashion industry, while the rest of us enthusiasts watch from afar (or through our phone screens and Instagram feeds) and marvel at the otherworldly silhouettes of theatrical ball gowns, gilded power suits and myriad other sartorial novelties. When we scroll through endless Instagram stories and images during fashion weeks, sometimes we’re looking to be wowed by such an effulgent array of breathtaking creations that we could only dream of wearing, that are so impeccably crafted that they don’t need to be wearable to be appreciated – but that, when we look to our own wardrobes furnished with comparatively ordinary trappings and encounter the pieces that hang there, won’t make a significant impact on the way we view clothes or the way we get dressed each day.

But most of the time, we’re looking to be inspired, we’re looking for tangible solutions to the conundrum that is getting dressed on a daily basis, for ensembles that could be recreated with clothes we already own or could buy. In other words, sometimes the best shows and collections aren’t always the ones that present the most beautiful and extravagant clothes, but the ones that simply offer subtle styling tips to apply to pre-existing garments in your wardrobe. Beyond abounding maximalist ball gowns and exaggerated textures, the AW2020 runways from New York to Paris played host to plenty of wonderfully wearable ensembles to recreate when you’re feeling limited by your wardrobe.

Veronica Beard

Veronica Beard’s runway debut unveiled 32 of the most covetable, recreatable and wearable looks not just of New York Fashion Week, but of the whole fashion week season. There was nothing mind-blowing or revolutionary, just a collection of clothes that worked together to conjure something like a real woman’s wardrobe rather than a fantasy runway version of that reality – there were autumnal corduroy separates worn with checked coats, floral printed maxi skirts paired with chunky roll-neck jumpers and double-breasted jackets, and ‘70s-spirited skirts worn with shearling jackets. But the best look to recreate: a zip-up denim boilersuit, worn over a navy Breton stripe turtleneck and finished with a checked blazer.

Michael Kors

Michael Kors’ AW20 collection was defined by an ‘escape to the country’ mood, with comfort high on Kors’ priorities list, but not at the sacrifice of polish or glamour. The looks were warming and wholesome – supersized smoke-grey heritage jumpers layered over shimmering metallic pleats, checked scarves worn as outerwear and quilted cashmere sweatshirts. Capes appeared in copious quantities on the runways, so look to Kaia Gerber’s sleek barley-coloured cape worn with a sunset orange turtleneck sweater dress and over-the-knee suede boots for a look that channels a certain countryside comfort.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has always had a sensibility for building wardrobes and creating clothes that women actually want to wear, rendered with an elegant simplicity accessible to all women. From argyle knits to tweed overcoats worn with culottes, each ensemble was styled to offer a simple styling template for getting dressed. Imbedded at once with playfulness and practicality, a standout look featured a shetland sweater in a joyful shade of egg-yolk yellow layered over a blue-and-white stripe button-down shirt and paired with a miniature-spotted mini skirt – with pockets for extra functionality.

Alberta Ferretti

There’s something satisfyingly put-together-looking about dressing head-to-toe in various hues on the spectrum of a single colour palette. At Alberta Ferretti’s show in Milan, there was plenty of colour-blocking in the form of powerful and practical daywear looks infused with an assertive confidence. Take this candy-coloured purple ensemble, where undulating plissé ruffles adorned with a chunky gold chain choker peeked out from the collar of a chunky rib-knit in a shade of deep violet. Capacious ‘80s-silhouette harem pants were cinched at the waist and tucked into lavender-coloured suede slouchy boots – ubiquitous on the catwalks last autumn, high-knee boots are set to remain a wardrobe mainstay for 2020.

Prada

Ever dreamt of wearing your pyjamas to a party? Well, now you can since the look is Miuccia Prada-approved. Prada’s AW20 collection reimagined the suit as elegant silk pyjamas delicately printed with waterlily motifs, peppered with barely-there tasselled heels and a gold logo-embellished headband, offering a take on menswear silhouettes injected with a feminine freshness and glamour.

Chloé

In her three years at the helm of Chloé, Natacha Ramsay-Levi has consistently grounded the Parisian fashion house’s contribution to fashion in strategically and elegantly executed wearability, woven with an unmistakable ‘70s-bohemian charm. A thigh-high split denim maxi skirt was paired with a rolled-sleeve v-neck cardigan, layered over a buttery checked blouse and finished with seamlessly incorporated Rita Ackermann patches, for a look that exuded a comfortable confidence and ease. Another iteration came in a creamy button-down midi skirt and Fairisle knit combination, once again decorated with ankle socks and brogue-style shoes.

Should you find yourself somewhat dazzled by but lost within what sometimes feels like the dream-like, parallel universe that is the world of designer fashion, these looks might just bring you back to earth and inject a fresh dose of joy into winter dressing.

An overwhelming divide between two camps swept the Autumn/Winter 19 runways earlier this year, with many of the collections that graced the catwalks falling firmly into one of two sartorial categories: minimalism and maximalism.

At the other end of the spectrum, volume, drama, rich colours and embellishment – in other words, a maximalist’s dream – reigned supreme, with no shortage of seasonal sparkle. With December fast approaching and party season on the horizon, look to the runways for the key ingredients to scoring the perfect festive party look – warning, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

High on glamour, the holiday season is as good an excuse as any to load up on sparkle. With the season’s mantra that ‘more is more’, nothing is too extra when it comes to the party pieces to get you noticed. Imitate the high-shine styles found on the AW19 catwalks, with options abound for glittering looks that’ll slide effortlessly into your party season wardrobe. Seek blinding seasonal sparkle at Michael Kors, where matching feather boas offered the perfect accoutrement to plunging purple halter-necks and royal azure cut-out glitter dresses. Make a festive statement in a black and silver sequin mini dress with a giant outlandish bow, as donned by Kaia Gerber on the Saint Laurent runway. Or, if you’re looking for something a little less OTT, pair a silk shirt with high-waisted sequin trousers that’ll work hard to uplift a winter soirée, as seen at Paco Rabanne, or an all-over glitter blouse with ombre flares and chunky silver heels as demonstrated by Halpern. A little black dress is a fail-safe number for the office Christmas do – add a layer of edge and swathe yourself in sequins with a glittering black blazer dress inspired by Saint Laurent.

Catch the light in disco metallics, which held sway at Altuzurra in the form of a golden pleated tier dress. At Gucci, shimmering leopard print midi skirts were paired with lace blouses and emerald green mermaid pleats took form in a balloon-sleeve blouse worn with opulent lace red tights. Speaking of which, tights are the accessory du jour. From fishnets to polka dots and diamantée embellishment, a pair of tights adds the perfect finishing touch to a luxurious party look.

Have a penchant for roaring 20s Gatsby glam? A jewel-encrusted mini dress serves as the perfect +1 to accompany you to an upcoming Christmas party – add diamond tassel earrings for an extra dose of glamour as seen as Paco Rabanne, or black studded accessories at Balmain for a flapper-meets-90s grunge look. Take inspiration from Michael Kors and go tonal with a copper fringe dress, matching heels and a (faux) fur coat for that extra layer of warmth – the perfect pick-me-up for dark winter nights. Black-tie occasion? Plunge into luxurious plumage inspired by Marc Jacobs’ decadent ball gowns. Feather trimmings were equally plentiful, with feather-lined shoes worn with sparkling hot pants and a fur shawl at Saint Laurent, and a feather-hemmed black blazer dress unveiled at Balmain. Alternatively, opt for an evening tuxedo as the go-to alternative to a dress – but not without a dose of opulence in the form of rich, jewel-toned puff sleeves as seen at Alexander McQueen.

For the minimalists, there’s still plenty of inspiration to be had, with an abundance of classic all-black silhouettes to imitate. Whether you’re looking for a glittering ensemble, disco brights or luxe textures, there’s no shortage of options to help you solve your festive party outfit conundrum.

From transforming into your favourite character the moment you slip into their costume to feeling like Harry Potter in your graduation gown to turning into a real life princess in your wedding dress, the clothes we wear have the ability to empower and completely transform us.

How often have you felt too lazy to workout? Simple. Throw on some gym clothes and your motivation to exercise will increase. As the popular saying goes, you are what you wear.

To celebrate 100 years since women first gained the right to vote in the UK, SHOWstudio presents 100 Women; a fashion illustration exhibition held in London embracing female empowerment. SHOWstudio asked 100 of the most influential models, including Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham and Kendall Jenner to share an image of the outfit they wore that made them feel the most empowered, followed by a quote to explain why. Curator Bex Cassie then paired an artist for each look to transform into a fashion illustration. These personal moments celebrate the power of fashion in its ability to empower, unite and truly celebrate women.

From stripping down to her lingerie to sporting an oversized jacket to appear physically bigger, these women express the many different ways in which fashion can make them feel bold and fearless. The portraits include Kate Moss in David Bowie’s original playsuit from the 1970s which gave her the confidence to step on stage, Victoria Beckham in a photo taken by Nick Knight for British Vogue in 2008 and Kendall Jenner donning a sexy black gown on the Met Gala 2017 red carpet which made her feel “strong, confident and proud.”

According to a study by the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, we are more likely to take on whatever associations we have with a piece of clothing and express them. Wearing a particular item of clothing can give you confidence, thus making you a stronger individual. People often associate femininity with long locks and “feminine” clothes such as dresses and skirts. This exhibition provokes and challenges the conventions of femininity with Cara Delevingne who had to shave her head for a film saying,

“At first I felt very self-conscious and confused because my long hair had been attached to a feeling of femininity. I felt empowered by this look [Chanel S/S 17 Couture] because I finally realised that beauty has no right or wrong. Beauty has no definition. To be truly beautiful you have to love yourself and that’s all that matters.”

Twiggy chose an image of herself rocking a Tuxedo taken by Brian Aris for her last album ‘Romantically Yours’.

Today, women are still expected to keep up with trends and look fashionable, which is why it is empowering for women to be able to make their own decisions when it comes to fashion and feel confident in doing so.
